Sugar Gum House Architect: Rob Kennon Builder: Brendan Murname

The Sugar Gum House sits on the Bass Straight’s rugged coastline, at the foot of the rolling hills connecting the Otway Ranges to the beach. The property operates as a sheep and cattle farm, with its acreage extending back to the fringe of the Otway Forest. The brief for the project was to replace a small weatherboard shack, which had served the client’s and their family for over three decades, with a new dwelling that would enhance the daily experience of this unique site, perched metres from thundering waves and white-sand beach to the south and verdant hillsides scattered with cattle and sheep to the north. The low maintenance steel, glass and locally-sourced sugar gum materials are driven by the demands of the site, aspiring to be neutral and at ease in their context. The house is constructed from a modular, repetitious steel structure, allowing the dwelling to have minimal impact on the coastal landscape. Each three-metre grid is either fully glazed, to capture views, or clad in local sugar gum shiplap cladding. The design sought to protect the house from the infamous Apollo Bay ‘Howlin’ Wind’ and severe winter rain, while also keeping the dwelling cool throughout summer. In warmer months, the house is protected from the north sun by a large cantilevered eve, while in winter, large, double-glazed windows extend heat to the entire living pavilion and four north-facing bedrooms. The crafted Cheminees Philippe fireplace provides a conversation point at night. The plan is segmented into two pavilions, separating out the living and sleeping quarters of the house, which caters for a stream of visitors. To the east of the living pavilion and

6

adjoining the kitchen, a deck captures the morning sun and ocean views, and provides protection from the north winds in summer. To the west of the sleeping pavilion, a second deck provides access to the house, sheltered from ocean winds but not the ocean views bathed in northern sunlight. Unlike the old shack, the house has a consciously outward focus, offering the owners a connection to the constantly shifting sea and landscape. Retaining simplicity and functionality, the new house is still a sturdy refuge after a hard day of farming, but in a more cultivated, spectacular way.

CAIRNS HARBOUR LIGHTS HOTEL

by Penny del Castillo, IN DESIGN INTERNATIONAL Cairns Harbour Lights Hotel, ideally situated on the waterfront of vibrant Cairns and offering a range of accommodation styles, has recently undergone a meaningful and masterful design upgrade, firmly cementing its reputation as the superior option for all types of holidayers to this region. Appointed designers, IN DESIGN INTERNATIONAL, considered their overall intent was to redefine integral areas and resolve several existing spatial planning challenges along with providing a new ambience for both the public and private spaces within. In an appreciation and respect for the original architect’s intent, IN DESIGN INTERNATIONAL’s pivotal point of interest in the lobby remained the atrium style lightwell. Strategically placed rope curtain walls now provide an innovative walkway to control pedestrian flow and a welcoming and comfortable guest check-in area has greatly enhanced the sense of arrival to this luxury location. Keen attention to detail has cleverly interwoven local iconic components such as a giant custom-made gumnut seating pod, floor to ceiling artwork behind the reception counter that hints of ancient sea turtles and Passo bespoke carpet emulating the depths of the sea. With the majority of furniture being custom made under the guidance and coordination of their project management team, IN DESIGN INTERNATIONAL relied on branded fabrics and finishes that met Australian standards. Now complete, and with quality furniture, accessories and window treatments also installed to rooms and apartments, Cairns Harbour Lights has been revived and invigorated.

FAMILY FOCUS

What type of holiday home does a commercial builder construct for his own family? As operations manager for Whytehall Services, Alex Labberton typically works on commercial projects for large well-known companies doing interior and structural fitouts, but he swapped his suit for his tool belt to build a holiday home for his family. “It was my chance to get back on the tools as a hobby across 18 months of weekends, public holidays and RDO’s to build the family holiday home,” says Alex, an experienced builder. “I pretty much had carte blanche but my Dad warned me: ‘You better not build me an office block.’ It’s a family joke because I also have a hotelier cousin who built a foyer-style reception area in his home.” The home is 600 square metres on one level in coastal Kilcunda, Victoria and overlooks Bass Coast. There are two wings to the house, with five bedrooms and three bathrooms at one end, and all living areas at the opposite end. It sleeps 14 people, which was tested for the first time last Christmas and has hosted many gatherings and parties since. Alex changed tack pretty early on, opting to go with an elevated Boxspan Steel flooring and Ezipier system rather than the specified timber bearers and joists on core-filled concrete blocks. “We regularly look around to see what products are available for the applications we’re building and timber is like a foreign language for us as we predominantly build with steel in commercial buildings,” says Alex. “We found the Spantec Systems website and saw the company supplies nationally.” “As soon as I talked with Spantec’s draftspeople I was comfortable that they talked the same language, even though they’re in NSW. I felt they had grasped the project and understood all the heavy loads and cantilevered design principles that needed to be transferred to the foundations.” The Boxspan Steel flooring system comes to site in kit form with bearers and joists cut to length. Perimeter bearers are marked with joist locations and pre-punched ready for brackets to be screw fixed. Brackets and screws are part of the floor kit along with detailed working drawings to make installation easy. Alex also chose the higher protection coating offered by Spantec, given the home’s proximity to the coast. “I won’t tell a lie, I was fairly daunted when I saw the semi turn up

with all the steel,” says Alex. “I expected the Boxspan floor to be quick to install, but I underestimated how quick it was.” “With concrete footings already poured we had the Boxspan floor, piers and bracing up in four days with just four to five blokes. The adjustable Ezipier heads were worth their weight in gold and the bearers and joists were like putting a Meccano set together.” The Ezipier adjustable piers and subfloor-bracing system was also incorporated into the kit, with pier posts cut onsite close to the required height and then final adjustment made with the adjustable Ezipier heads to get to the correct floor level. “The levelled floor was a huge surprise to me as it’s not often you get to drop a kitchen in without levelling the cabinets,” says Alex. “You can drop a marble anywhere on the floor and not have it roll away, unlike the shopping centre floors I typically deal with. It saved us three weeks of labour. “Set-downs for wet areas and decks were also taken care of by Spantec in the design, which saved a lot of time onsite.” Alex has built his large architecturally designed house with large window openings, giving it a spacious feeling. By raising the floor higher he was able to capture 180-degree views of Bass Bay and give the house a unique look as if it floats above the hills that surround it. Spantec loves seeing the exciting projects its customers undertake.

WHY HIDDEN FASTENERS FOR TIMBER & COMPOSITE DECKING?

Hidden fasteners provide a reliable option to overcome the pitfalls associated with traditional fastening through the boards. Does not Split / Crack and allow moisture into the sub frame. The problem is, that when you fasten your deck using nails or screws, a number of issues are created. It takes time to pre-drill boards and with having to join each board over a joist, wastage of over 10% is quite common. Added to this is the risk of split boards, or later having boards or nails popping… there has to be a better way. This is why Deck-Max created a hidden fastening system for both composite and timber decks that enables you to install and enjoy better timber decking. By using a pre-grooved, high quality hardwoods, this hidden fastening system attaches in the side of each board, securely fixing it in place. With a massive 700kg load rating, this creates a fastening that is stronger than screws or nails by up to 500%. As the Pro biscuit is available in a 3mm or 5mm gap size, spacing your boards is simple and easy, with the fastening system assisting with the positioning of your boards as you install them. End Match – Hidden fastening reduces waste A common issue with traditional decking, is the waste created by having to start and finish each length on a joist of the sub frame. You now have a better option, with pre-grooved timber decking in the form of End Match fixing, another Deck-Max innovation, which allows you to join boards at any point on the sub-frame.... Resulting in:

70% less waste & 30% less labour

AUSTRALIAN-MADE TERMITE BARRIER FROM BAYER

According to the CSIRO, termites cause $780 million of damage in Australia each year. They enter homes via underground tunnels. By the time they’re discovered, they can cause considerable damage. Termites build protective mud tubes up brickwork or around physical barriers to gain access to food – the timber homes are constructed with. Specifying a Kordon Termite Barrier, in conjunction with an annual termite inspection by a qualified professional, will protect the home from termites for up to 50+ years. Installing Kordon means termites cannot get into the home undetected. If there was no Kordon installed, termites would be able to do a significant amount of damage before they were detected. Kordon operates as an “early warning system”.

How Kordon Works Kordon contains deltamethrin, a synthetic pyrethroid that kills termites which come into contact with it. Equally importantly though, deltamethrin is a powerful termite repellant, so termites are very unlikely even to approach the barrier and attempt to breach it. Kordon is classified as a building product and it is approved for use in local government areas where soil termiticide treatments have been prohibited. Specify Kordon®, for peace of mind.

Beautiful Timber: Beautiful Results

How others have utilised timber to its full effect. Diverse species for diverse applications. The choices of timber are wide, we suggest you determine the look of the timber first and then decide how to achieve that particular look.

A fine example of the use of Spotted Gum for flooring in combination with other timbers in an open plan kitchen dining setting. Through the judicious use of a timber framed sliding door increases the functional space by connecting to a spotted gum deck. Visually consistent yet without the result of feeling as if there is too much timber.

To make the right choice of timber floor its important to ask the right questions. With the help of the staff at the TimberHub you can be sure you get the product you want in the way you need it! So visit us, but in the meantime consider the following.

Selecting your timber species Take your time, it is a big investment and you need to make the right choice, after all you do have to live with it!! Consider – selection of species for performance, colour and grade – there are 3 grades of timber flooring: • Select - usually all straight grain pattern • Standard - is similar but includes a proportion of the natural characteristics like small gum veins, knots etc • Feature - includes more gum veins. knots, gum pockets, hobnail etc For high traffic areas like hallways, family rooms etc. choose one of the harder hardwood species like Blackbutt, Spotted Gum, Sydney Blue Gum etc.

Choices The beautiful tonings of wide board Tassie Oak in an open plan setting

You have a choice of 2 basic solid timber flooring thicknesses to consider, there’s 19mm (the most widely used) and there’s 14mm overlay flooring. Talk to your flooring supplier and/or the producer for typical application & installation details. There are also several widths to think about, narrower boards like 8085mm & wider boards like 110—130mm. While you can refer to our installation guide. Remember that boards wider than 85mm are not recommended to be secret nailed and should be top/face nailed. Also always specify a flexible type glue be used by the flooring installer. Why? Because it moves with the timber and keeps a solid bond over time! There’s also engineered timber flooring available which is usually pre-finished. for more information please contact: Eric Siegers, CEO TimberHub P: (03) 9875 5010 E: erics@thetimberhub.com.au W: www.thetimberhub.com.au

The use of a standard grade black butt floor with wide boards, offsets the stark colours of this modern arrangement. The timber brings a warmth and rustic feel through its subtle colourations and tones.

APPLE Dubai Mall

with one of the world’s largest kinetic art installations opens to visitors Apple Dubai Mall with one of the world’s largest kinetic art installations opened to Visitors 27 April 2017 Apple Dubai Mall is reinventing the traditional introverted idea of mall-based retail as a more outward looking experience that engages with the spectacle of urban life. Its design is a highly innovative response to the culture and climate of the Emirates, while also demonstrating Apple’s pioneering ambition to create inspirational civic spaces for all. Located in Dubai Mall – one of the most visited urban centres in the world, attracting over 80 million visitors every year since 2014 – the new Apple Dubai Mall occupies the most pivotal position in the city, alongside the iconic Burj Khalifa and overlooking the famous Dubai Fountains. Spanning over two floors, it embraces the theatre of the fountains with a sweeping 56.6 metre wide and 5.5 metre deep terrace – a first for any Apple Store – with unparalleled views of the spectacular setting and the incredible choreographed display. Stefan Behling, Head of Studio, Foster + Partners said: “The design of Apple Dubai Mall is about creating an exceptional architectural and social experience for visitors, bringing to the fore new ideas about the evolving role of Apple Flagships in the community. I am sure Apple Dubai Mall will become a true people’s place.” The design of Apple Dubai Mall is a continuing collaboration between the Apple design team under the leadership of Jony Ive and Foster + Partners. It is a celebration of the sun, using the abundant daylight to create a special ambience within. Reinterpreting the traditional Arabic Mashrabiya, innovative, ‘Solar Wings’ gently shade the outside terrace during the day and open majestically during the evening to reveal the ‘best seat in the house’ with a breath-taking view of the waterside promenade and fountains. With their movement path inspired by a falcon spreading its wings, the ‘Solar Wings’ are in itself a theatrical experience – an integrated vision of kinetic art and engineering. The wings have been carefully crafted to inspire delight, a delicate combination of form and function. Made entirely of lightweight carbon fibre, each wing has multiple layers of tubes forming a dense net. Following an in-depth study of sun angles, the rods have been distributed in higher concentration where the solar radiation is the most intense over the year. The unique pattern allows clear views out for people standing on both levels of the store, and the sunlight streaming through the wings casts dappled shadows deep into the interior. “The opening and closing of these majestic Solar Wings is analogous to a delicate ballet recital – but on a monumental scale. 27

The Dubai Fountain is the world’s tallest performing fountain situated on the 30 acre Burj Lake. It is over 274m in length – equivalent to over two football pitches.

In some ways it is a very spiritual experience, with the sun streaming through them and creating the most delicate and beautiful patterns of light and shade – a seamless blend of technology and culture.” Behling added. Access to the store is through full height, glazed pivoting doors on both levels, directly from Dubai Mall. The Avenue, a specially designed area for accessories display, on the lower level along with Apple’s signature display tables sits in the midst of a grove of trees, creating a calm environment to experience Apple’s latest products. Apple Dubai Mall will also launch Apple’s new global instore experience, ‘Today at Apple’ – where New Creative Pros, the liberal arts counterpart of Apple’s technical Geniuses, will offer individual advice and training on photography, filmmaking, art and design and more. The new shaded terrace features nine substantial trees within large planters incorporating seating for visitors to sit, relax and enjoy the view. The planters will rotate mechanically to ensure that the trees receive even sunlight. The terrace will offer the communities of Dubai a new vantage point – furthering Apple’s commitment to the communities they are part of.

SOLAR WINGS ●● Carbon fibre was chosen for the wings because it resists oxidation and is extremely lightweight – each wing is 11m tall, 3m wide, and weighs just 1,200kg. ●● There are 18 wings in total. ●● The wings are thicker towards the middle along their length to resist wind loads, and together with the terrace overhang the screens improve thermal comfort inside the store. ●● The wings are motorised – take 1 minute to open/ close ●● Each wing is made of 340 carbon fibre rods, whose geometry was carefully designed so that none of them actually intersect. 28

THE DOUBLE GLAZING CONUNDRUM Would you like condensation or mould with your new home? Double glazing is one of the top 10 considerations for building a modern energy efficient home. A well sealed, well insulated home is essential to deliver the benefits of a double glazed home. But here’s the rub... a double glazed window that’s open is a hole in the wall. A double glazed window that’s permanently closed - which only makes sense to deliver the thermal and acoustic benefits - means the home will very quickly suffer from inadequate ventilation. That’s no problem if the occupants stop washing, cooking, breathing and sweating inside their new home - if they don’t, they will quickly find their thermally and acoustically efficient box, is home to potentially lethal mould, odour and third world standard indoor air quality.

conundrum...). Another response might be “run the aircon”. In domestic air conditioning systems there is NO fresh air, its just recirculated indoor air - and what’s the first thing you do you when you turn on the aircon?...close the windows?

Mouldbuster can also supply and install European wall mounted room ventilators; European energy recovery ventilators, quality bathroom extraction systems and subfloor and basement ventilation solutions.

Mouldbuster home ventilation is a national alliance of independent residential ventilation experts. The key to formulating a quality ventilation solution is to understand the impact of draft on humans. Enhancing the Look of Garage Floors using Rhino ArmaFloor Polyaspartic Floor Coatings A garage floor may not be the first place you might think of making improvements. However, that does not mean it is not a practical option. In fact, adding a garage floor coating to an existing garage floor or new home can enhance not only the appearance of a property but possibly increase its value as well. We know from experience most garage floors will begin to break away and crack, they will stain easily from oil, fuel, acids and anything that leaks. Rhino ArmaFloor®, a polyaspartic-polyurea, not only seals the concrete floor but permanently protects it from oil and other fluids that stain garage floors. When it comes to reducing the possibility of slip incidents or even considering the future potential of turning a garage into an entertainment or home gym area, no matter reason, installing ArmaFloor® will meet all flooring needs for added safety and looks. ArmaFloor® garage floors are not only functional, they can also be beautiful. Sure, there are many garage coating choices out there, however, don’t assume all as equal. Some floor coatings are simply painted onto the surface, not so with ArmaFloor®. With a range of attractive colours to suit any décor, ArmaFloor® can be imbedded with paint chips, coloured quartz, or other decorative flakes to create a beautiful yet durable floor that will provide satisfaction year after year. Whether it’s a renovation or building a new home, you really should think about the surface of the garage floor. Having non-slip decorative flooring within the garage can reduce the risk of injury and enhance the look of any home. When you are searching for modern and aesthetically pleasing garage floor coverings look no further than Rhino ArmaFloor®, a division of Rhino Linings Australasia, we’re much more than just ute liners. Self-Seal Casing for Ceiling Exhaust Fans The Australian Designed and Manufactured DraftStoppa®can save up to 30% on your heating & cooling costs. “The DraftStoppa® - so what is it?”

CLOSED

The DraftStoppa® is an innovative and inexpensive self-seal cover for ceiling exhaust fans containing a set of balanced shutters which open when the fan is turned on and close under their own weight when the fan is turned off. This Australian designed and manufactured product is aimed at reducing energy costs by preventing hot or cold air from entering the home via the ceiling exhaust fan. Made entirely from recyclable, fire retardant materials, the DraftStoppa is simple to install, requires little maintenance and can be fitted over most standard exhaust fans in new homes as well as being retro-fitted into established homes. OPEN

The DraftStoppa Prevents hot or cold air entering from the roof cavity. Prevents polluted air or cooking smells from entering into other parts of the home or workplace. Exceeds the Sustainable Energy Authority Victoria ‘First Rate’ energy rating performance level requirements for a totally self sealing exhaust fan. Is economically priced and adapts to most major ceiling exhaust fans. Fits most standard and 3 in 1 type ceiling exhaust fans. Is simple to install and opens and closes effortlessly without loading-up your ceiling exhaust fan motor. Is fully recyclable.

Testing by Complex Air Conditioning Pty Ltd, and reviewed by the Victorian Sustainable Energy Authority, indicates that in areas where ceiling exhaust fans are in use this can give an energy saving of up to 30% Test results concluded that in Winter conditions with an outside temperature of 1ºC and an average internal room (10m x 4m x 2.7m - volume 108m³ and an ambient internal temperature of 15.5ºC), the cold air inflow from the roof cavity through an unsealed fan into the room was measured at 13 litres/second. This means that in every hour 46.8m³ of cold air would have entered the room and the total volume of warm air would be replaced every 2 hours and 20 minutes at a huge reheating cost.

WHELAN’S

...a history

A Whelan history timeline Whelan the Wrecker was a family owned and operated Australian demolition company which began in Brunswick, Victoria in 1892 and later based in Port Melbourne. The Company is well known for its role in the destruction of a number of grand old buildings of ‘Marvellous Melbourne’, many of them along Collins Street’s ‘golden mile’. Led by the Council of the City of Melbourne, this push to demolish much of Melbourne’s Victorian era buildings in favour of new ‘modern’ buildings was strongly motivated by the city’s experience of war. Families welcoming home their loved ones from WWI were invigorated with a renewed sense of national pride and a desire to forget the dark days of war. From the 1920s onwards-clean lines and modern appearances brought about positive feelings of hope for the future and Melbournians were eager for change.

The Company’s work reshaping the city continued post WWII. The ‘Whelan the Wrecker is Here’ sign which could be seen around the city, particularly in their halcyon days of the 1950s and 60s, represented to many a time of great progress and urban renewal.

34

The Whelan family, while being instrumental in changing the landscape of the Melbourne, has always held an appreciation for heritage, which distinguished them from many other demolition companies. Their work resulted in the demolition but subsequent rescue of the much-loved Skipping Girl sign in Richmond and parts of the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Many other pieces have been saved by the Company from sites around Melbourne and made available through a now legendary salvage yard. The Delta Group and Whelan the Warehouse continues this work with their keen eye for reclaiming and rehoming heritage pieces today. In 1991, as the Company got ready to close it doors, Myles Whelan donated over 170 pieces to the Melbourne Museum. The Bull’s head plaque from the Bull and Mouth Hotel, the custom made cast iron from the Federal Coffee Palace and the Coat of Arms from Melbourne’s Eastern Market are key

pieces of the valuable Whelan Collection held at the museum. Brickwork, safety signs, demolition equipment and other relics showcase the work of Melbourne’s most famous demolition company and offer a unique insight into the shaping of the city’s modern backdrop. The Delta Group offers a number of services along with demolition and deconstruction including recycling, asset recovery and landscaping, and have been involved in major projects around the country since 1974 including work on Darling Harbour and the Sydney Convention Centre. Their ‘never let you down’ definition of integrity has made them Australia’s largest demolition company. Whelan the Warehouse now benefits from the wealth of experience offered through these two Companies and has unparalleled access to unique salvage pieces, recycled timber and an extensive range of timbers to suit every need.

THE HYDROWOOD STORY Lake Pineman

In the glassy waters of Lake Pieman on Tasmania’s west coast lies a treasure hidden for over 25 years. An ancient forest - flooded and forgotten when the Pieman River was dammed to create hydro-electricity. Lost in the deep dark waters, trees still stand tall on the lake’s bottom. Thanks to incredible feats of modern engineering, we are delving deep below the waters of Lake Pieman to resurrect the precious timber below. This project will unlock supplies of specialty timbers so scarce they were thought almost gone forever. Species such as Tasmanian Myrtle, Sassafras and even the legendary Huon Pine will once again be available in quantity. This isn’t reclaimed wood, salvaged from some previous structure - already worked and full of bolts and nails. Nor is it a lonely log found years dead and scavenged from the leaf litter of a musty forest floor. This is real timber. Timber (re) discovered. Timber that master builders dream of working with, harvested in a way you wouldn’t believe and in quantities the world thought it would never see again. Whelan’s are the Victorian distributor for Hydrowood.

BALL BEARING DOOR TRACKS Engineered & Manufactured in Australia since 1880

Charles Marshall P/L is a family run business based in Richmond, Victoria, Australia. Our flagship product is an extensive range of FITZROY Ball Bearing Sliding Track systems.

UNIVERSITY TESTED

COMPANY HISTORY

The track was subjected to 258 hours of non-stop opening and closing operation.

Charles Marshall established his engineering business in Fitzroy, Victoria in 1880. Over one hundred and thirty years on, the company has grown, prospered and is still owned and run by the Marshall family. This unique patented system covers a vast range of applications from light-weight kitchen drawers up to giant one tonne door installations and beyond. Developed in 1932, the unique FITZROY system provides a reliable and simple solution to the challenge of finding a durable sliding door track. A FITZROY system was fitted to the bronze doors in 1932 at the Shrine of Rememberance in Melbourne. Today, that same system shows negligible wear and is still operating with effortless ease. Since 1932 FITZROY has been opening doors on some of the most prestigious architectural projects around Australia.

The University of Melbourne Engineering Department tested a typical section of FITZROY track.

This means that the test door opened and closed fully 130,000 times, travelling approximately 160 kilometres.

PRECISION MEASUREMENT RESULTS WERE IMPRESSIVE. Cage Wear - No evidence of wear on either surface Ball Wear - Precision measuring found no evidence of ball wear. Track Wear - 0.0005", So minute as to be regarded as negligible.

CONCLUSION From these exhaustive tests, the wear rate calculated was so low it was not possible to estimate the life of the track.

Although FITZROY boasts installation in such projects as the Melbourne Casino, Parliament House in Canberra and the Sydney Opera House - there are thousands of smaller, but equally spectacular buildings around Australia that have chosen FITZROY. Used universally in the construction industry you will find FITZROY in such places as: • • • • • • • • • •

NEW Silent Motorised Curtain Track TOSO Australia

TOSO is well known in the Australian market for its premium Mytec Roller blind system, which is ideal for commercial, residential and aged care applications and is considered the best roller blind in the market. But what is less known is that TOSO in Japan was first established in 1949 as a manufacturer of curtain tracks and since that time has maintained its position as “number one” in the Japanese market and never fails to provide constantly evolving designs, new functions, and a wide selection. There has been a noticeable trend back towards curtains, where before roller blinds and shutters lead the way. There are now more textile options for curtains and this is giving both the consumer and Interior Designers the opportunity to use their creative flair to use this as their preferred window furnishing solution. There also has been a noticeable trend towards the motorisation of curtain tracks, not just for high end homes and hotels but also in every day family homes, and rather than just one motorised track being requested they are now being installed in multiples as they become more affordable, and the public become more aware that it can also extend the lifespan of the curtain as you can avoid damage caused by cords and manual

It has a Touch Motion function which enables the opening/closing of the curtains without using any switch operations. If the curtain is drawn, it will begin to move in the direction pulled, and will stop at the place on the limit setup

operation. As a result of this, and knowing that the new TOSO system can fill a gap in the market, due to its ultra-quiet operation along with smooth operation even when drawn by hand, it has been decided to launch the new TOSO Ti-8040 motorised curtain track into the Australian market and has recently been issued its Regulatory Compliance Mark (RCM) for both motor and remote. This was previously known as the C-Tick, which all motorised systems require if they are to be sold in the Australian/NZ market, though many Chinese systems seem to ignore this regulation. The super silent TOSO Ti-8040 with its highly durable belt drive transmission system has a built-in FM remote control receiver along with a Touch Motion function which enables the opening/ closing of the curtains without using any switch operations. If the curtain is drawn, it will begin to move in the direction pulled, and will stop at the place on the limit setup.

Along with its motor operation, it also has hand-draw operation because of its built-in electromagnetic clutch, so it can still be operated by hand when no power is available or when a user is unaware that it is a motorised track with no damage to the motor limits or curtain heading, which is a big benefit in a Hotel situation. Operating the curtain by hand is that light that you would think that it was just a normal manual curtain track when opening or closing the curtain. This motorised track will also be the quietest available in the market, with the noise level being under 35 dB, as against most motorised curtain tracks which are between 44 and 50dB, and be able to do widths of 10 metres with 40kg carrying capacity. The Decibels (dB) are worked on a logarithmic scale and a 3 dB difference is a doubling of the amount of sound energy. In layman’s terms it is about ‘one notch’ on a volume control, and 6-10 dB is generally said to be a subjective doubling of volume, so this is a considerable improvement on other systems currently in the market.
