DISGUISING SECURITY BOLLARDS BEAUTY & SECURITY

PAS68 BOLLARDS

PAS68 bollards disguised as various seating elements & planters

As state and local governments across Australia wrestle with the best methods of protecting civilians and pedestrians in our public places LEDA has been instrumental in finding alternatives and options other than installing rows and rows of steel bollards.

LEDA has a comprehensive range of Street Furniture products that can be installed to prevent vehicular access and protect pedestrians. When there is no option than to install Certified HVM Bollards we have also designed methods and products to disguise them while making the site more aesthetically attractive. A simple method is to build planter boxes around bollards, to conceal them, using conventional Brick or Timber and Aluminium. These can additionally have seating added to make them more multi-functional.

World Trade Centre Proposed for Western Sydney

An $8 billion mixed use city proposed for Western Sydney has the potential to shift the needle on jobs by creating 140,000 total jobs.

An economic impact assessment by PwC indicates that by 2040 the mixed use employment district at WTC Sydney would create 43,500 direct jobs and directly inject $13 billion to the economy, with significant additional indirect and induced

“WTC Sydney is a project that will resolve the structural problem faced by Sydney by bringing balance to our city which is historically tilted to the east,” Mr Varghese said. We are excited about this project, it will create an ecosystem to promote international trade, economic activity and employment generation by connecting Sydney to the 322 cities in 90 countries through the WTC network. Apple Cotai Central gives Macau a new oasis of calm Apple Cotai Central offers a calm complement to the buzz and excitement of Macau, responding to the desire for an inviting, contemplative space, where technology, entertainment and arts come together to make a positive contribution to the city. Its timeless design reinvigorates a corner of Cotai with a distinctive addition – a luminescent cube, whose pure geometry and warm ‘beacon-like’ glow draws passers-by closer, set within a quiet bamboo grove and an external plaza. 12

The design is the result of a close collaboration between the design team at Apple led by chief design officer, Sir Jonathan Ive and Angela Ahrendts, senior vice president of Retail and Online Stores and Foster + Partners. Apple Cotai Central seeks to create more meaningful spaces for the community and providing an alternative urban model for Cotai. Strategically located at the heart of this gaming and entertainment capital, the design makes a humble civic gesture with a large new event plaza in the foreground of the cube. Carved out of a densely planted bamboo forest, the plaza forms an oasis of tranquillity, an urban room that draws people into the site, creating pedestrian

connections between the surrounding buildings for the first time. Stefan Behling, Head of Studio, Foster + Partners, said: “We wanted to create something very simple and pure – a beautiful and elegant building that complements the sounds, sights and colours of Macau, while embodying a sense of clarity and quietude. The design creates two distinct spaces, one inside and one outside, imbued with a sense of authentic beauty arising from the innovative use of natural materials.” Apple Cotai Central is conceptualized as a ‘paper lantern’ that glows mysteriously. Visitors entering the store are treated to a magical experience, surrounded by

glowing stone panels that shimmer throughout the day as the sun brings them to life, while at night the cube radiates a warm glow, contrasting against the bright lights of Macau. The firstof-its kind glass-stone composite façade comprises five layers of glass integrated with incredibly thin layers of stone, which gives the building its distinctive materiality – appearing as translucent stone walls, akin to stained-glass. The structural frame is supported by just three corner columns wrapped in mirrored stainless-steel that reflect the patterns and colours of the façade, dematerializing the structure and blending seamlessly with the surrounding environment. The interior is designed as the exact spatial inverse of the plaza, with a quiet bamboo grove carved from the forest outside and placed under the soaring central atrium. It is capped by a large central skylight with punched pyramidical apertures that brings natural light deep into the interior spaces. The ground level is wrapped in a glazed façade that looks onto a layered bamboo screen, providing a heightened sense of enclosure, while blurring the boundaries between the inside and outside. At the far end of the store is a 10.6-metre by 4.5-metre video wall. Adjacent to the video wall is an axial entrance from the adjacent retail areas and casino, drawing people to the interior. Two grand stone staircases lead to the upper level, lit by skylight strips that bring in filtered natural light. Display tables are arranged around the central atrium looking onto the bamboo grove below. The composite glass-stone façade wraps around the entire upper level, creating a soft internalized environment that exudes a sense of calm and serenity. A second internal axial entrance on the upper level provides a spacious stepped connection from the mall. Arranged around a generous entrance atrium, it creates visual connections between both levels of the store.

Australia’s Tallest Timber Tower Architect: Bates Smart

Developer & Builder: Lendlease

Owner: Impact Investment Group 25 King is on track for completion later this year. “The topping out of 25 King represents another significant milestone in the completion of what will be the world’s tallest and largest engineered timber office building by gross floor area.” said Tony Orazio, General Manager QLD & NT, Lendlease Building “With each new milestone, we get more and more excited about this brilliant building. 25 King is the definition of a connected, collaborative workspace for high-performance teams.” said Darren Brusnahan, Head of Funds Management – Real Estate, Impact Investment Group

In the Australian property market, 25 King includes extensive use of innovative and sustainable building materials - glue laminated timber structural beams and columns and cross laminated timber (CLT) floors - as well as state-of-the-art technology to deliver a true workplace of the future. Lendlease has today (20 July) reached structural completion of Australia’s tallest and largest engineered timber office building, 25 King, at Brisbane Showgrounds.

The building is testament to the benefits of construction using engineered timber. 25 King is Lendlease’s fifth engineered timber building in Australia and one of several timber projects the company currently has underway across the country.

“25 King is setting a new benchmark within Australia and internationally for the delivery of office buildings that are more sustainable from an environmental perspective while also delivering cost, time and waste efficiencies. This is a very compelling combination. 25 King really is the next generation of sustainability. Compared to a traditional concrete and steel construction, the pre-formed engineered timber construction means no waste and an energy saving of at least 40 per cent.” said Dale Connor, CEO, Lendlease Building The building forms part of the reinvigoration through redesign of the RNA Showgrounds precinct, 1.5 km north of the Brisbane CBD.

Kordon Termite Barrier is a uniquely flexible building protection tool that provides a combined physical and repellant termite barrier – and can easily be moulded or cut and joined to fit complex design features. Complete underslab installation of Kordon provides an impermeable moisture barrier for the entire building as well. Developed in Australia (a licensed Australian-Made product), Kordon is backed by global resources of Bayer. In on-going assessment since 1989 by Bayer, Kordon has achieved 100% success as a physical termite barrier. Kordon has also been tested and evaluated by the CSIRO, Australian Building Codes Board, State Forestry Departments, State Building Authorities and experts in buiding design.

50 Year Performance When correctly installed, Kordon will last 50+ years. Kordon is covered by a 6 year product warranty, and Bayer also now offers homeowners an exclusive $1 million Bayer Protection Warranty.

AUSTRALIAN-MADE TERMITE BARRIER FROM BAYER

According to the CSIRO, termites cause $780 million of damage in Australia each year. They enter homes via underground tunnels. By the time they’re discovered, they can cause considerable damage. Termites build protective mud tubes up brickwork or around physical barriers to gain access to food – the timber homes are constructed with. Specifying a Kordon Termite Barrier, in conjunction with an annual termite inspection by a qualified professional, will protect the home from termites for up to 50+ years. Installing Kordon means termites cannot get into the home undetected. If there was no Kordon installed, termites would be able to do a significant amount of damage before they were detected. Kordon operates as an “early warning system”.

How Kordon Works Kordon contains deltamethrin, a synthetic pyrethroid that kills termites which come into contact with it. Equally importantly though, deltamethrin is a powerful termite repellant, so termites are very unlikely even to approach the barrier and attempt to breach it. Kordon is classified as a building product and it is approved for use in local government areas where soil termiticide treatments have been prohibited. Specify Kordon®, for peace of mind.

Broadway Malyan secures first major masterplan in Australia Springfield City Group has appointed Broadway Malyan to design a 52-hectare “health city” as part of Greater Springfield, located near Brisbane. The global architecture and urbanism practice is working on concepts for the integrated healthcare development in Springfield, which will be delivered between now and 2030. The masterplan comprises medical office buildings, and facilities dedicated to aged care, hospitality and wellness, education, research and business, start-ups and incubators. Residential space is incorporated throughout the development as well as complementary retail and leisure. The site is already home to the highly 24

acclaimed Mater Hospital, which will be expanded, and the Aveo retirement community, which will ultimately comprise nearly 2,500 seniors living apartments. A recently completed hotel, specialty medical suites and other existing health and wellness accommodation will also be fully integrated with the plans. The concept is underpinned by four pillars; connectivity, with easy access to healthy options for movement; using smart technology to help people monitor, improve and make decisions about their health; weaving nature throughout a sustainable community; and incorporating complementary land uses and encouraging collaboration between public and private sector to drive economic prosperity. Ed Baker, director at Broadway Malyan, said: “We have used the concept of healthy living as our guiding design principle, focusing on a development that will

support and encourage the wellbeing of the people who will live, work and visit Health City. The mix of uses we have suggested within the masterplan will see the creation of a proper community that functions beyond the working day. Our approach promotes ease of movement, with a car-lite campus designed to create an open, walkable development, to subtly reinforce a health conscious environment. Because it is part of a long term vision, we have designed it with flexibility in mind to help with the phasing and any future expansion as technologies and community needs change.” One of the key features of the project is to develop a “Living Lab” within a showcase building in the early phases. This will anchor the Knowledge Precinct and act as a testbed for new technology related to smart living and healthcare.

Archi-Tech Services Pty Ltd

Springfield City Group Chairman Maha Sinnathamby said a city must be judged on the health and happiness of its community and the positive impact on its region. “We want Springfield Central Health City to be the leading health masterplan in Australia if not the world. It will be a complete health city, mixing medical and biosciences, with the latest in sport and leisure technologies. We believe that this is a once in a generation opportunity to improve the health of the region and provide an attractive place to live that showcases the best in health, technology and innovation. Our ambition is to create a Smart City in the broadest sense that sets new standards for digital healthcare at the individual level not just the wider site.” Mr Sinnathamby added that it is important that all of the separate elements of the plan are fully integrated so that the different functions benefit from their close proximity together. “To deliver the future models of healthcare that we aspire to, we have placed significant importance on connectivity and a masterplan that will encourage collaboration at all levels, from the medical staff, researchers and students, through to entrepreneurs, tourists and residents of all ages.”

INSITE - Spring 2018

It is Broadway Malyan’s first appointment in Australia, following ten years working in the Asia Pacific region. It was secured through an international competition and the practice worked with a local partner, Conrad Gargett, as part of the process. Ed added: “This is a fantastic opportunity for us to continue to expand our offer in the region, working in another new territory. We have been steadily building our profile and winning projects in new countries over the last few years and it is testament to our expertise and ability, built on a growing portfolio of international masterplans and shared best practice.”

About Greater Springfield Located on Brisbane’s doorstep in Queensland, Greater Springfield is Australia’s fastest emerging new city. Master-planned around interactive pillars of health, education and information technology, the world-awarding winning project is home to a rapidly expanding community of 40,000 and has attracted public and private investment totalling more than $14bn so far.

Beneath these tannin-rich waters an ancient forest stands, submerged when the Pieman River was dammed to generate hydro-electricity. Submerged that is, until two Tasmanians took the Hydrowood dive. They embarked on arguably Australia’s most ambitious forestry project. Unrivalled feats of modern engineering were driven by a bold yet unchartered vision. The reward? Buried treasure. Timbers so scarce, the world thought they were forever gone.

Today, these once forgotten timbers are being shaped into furniture, flooring and bespoke architectural features in residential and commercial applications. Meals are prepared on Hydrowood benchtops whilst feet walk over Eucalypt floorboards – timber once submerged. Indeed these timbers can be used for any project requiring thoughtful, striking material. When you make something with Hydrowood, it comes with a story, a provenance not found in any other timber product.

Harvesting trees underwater is the same as on land, but upside down. Rather than reaching for the canopy, the waterproof harvester plunges deep below. From the custom built barge, they able to harvest just as swiftly as a landbased operation. Just upside down.

Whelan’s are the Australian distributor for Hydrowood producing bespoke architectural solutions for internal and external applications.

Milan 2018 Design Week by Penny del Castillo, Director, IN DESIGN INTERNATIONAL

For the last 50+ years the design world has turned its focus to Milan for one week in April. 2018 proved to be yet another astonishing year of new ideas, prototypes, releases, updates and outstanding visionary displays to wow the record breaking 400,000 attendees. Long established with architects, interior & industrial designers from across the globe, the event has become

one of the most important industry exhibits to attend. The information and inspiration overload has certainly fuelled my creative mind consecutively for the past 15 years! The attempt to reduce 2500+ exhibitors to a handful of highlights is an almost impossible task to request! Nonetheless, here’s what left the most lasting impression in my mind during what was another magical design week and so much more than the release of new furniture!

HENGE – Oxymoron (distributed in Australia by Home Italia formerly Ashton Grove) Italian craftsmanship at its finest. The conception and production of the OXYMORAN table will literally leave you speechless, clasping your hands at your heart! Don’t believe me? Check out this video! https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=4Ib-GlEktMs the 2018 release Oxymoron table designed by Massimo Castagna is inspired by nature and its elements - air, water, earth, and fire. From their balance, contrast and harmony, HENGE gathers ideas for making products that are truly out of the ordinary. The dining table has been created using a technique called Forest Fusion. A handmade “micromosaic” wooden top standing on bronze sand casted legs. The unique and exclusive process to create the Oxymoron Table top has been labelled Forest Fusion: Which involves slithers of walnut wood which are cut and layered by hand in the fusion process to create a “micro-mosaic“ likened to a “marbled affect”.

DORNBRACHT - Aquamoon

Four newly-developed flow modes and fascinating lighting scenarios are combined to form an emotional water experience capable of boosting a new level of joie de vivre:

The underlying message is - Hygge!! The Danish Art of Cosiness. Hygge illuminates the Danish soul. In essence, hygge means creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people. Our own home bathrooms are set to become a place of wellness and rejuvenation. The LifeSpa concept in the future. Your inner space. A new shower experience. Dornbracht presented Aquamoon – a multi-sensory water experience Water, light, energy – Aquamoon represents a new dimension of a highly-individual shower experience. The spa application embodies the next level in the Dornbracht LifeSpa and permits a unique encounter with the element of water: four newly-developed flow modes and fascinating lighting scenarios are combined to form an emotional water experience capable of boosting a new level of joie de vivre. Aquamoon is distinguished by its particularly minimalist design, attributing focus to the unique water experience. A dome in the ceiling offers a particularly deep-view effect: by means of a concealed light strip inside the semi-sphere, Aquamoon creates the perfect mood lighting while generating a feeling of infiniteness when gazing upwards.

Kengo Kuma – BREATH/ng

The functional architectural sculpture — titled ‘BREATH/ng’ — comprises 120 hand-folded panels and is a towering 6 metres tall.

Released as part of the “Design for the Age of Experience” installation and under the theme of “Design for Life” Kengo Kuma wanted to show architecture of the future and it’s relationship to LIFE. His driver is the shift from 20th Century hard, rigid materials to a call from the people to move towards softness where architecture moves easily and harmoniously. The 6m high air-purifying sculpture was unveiled in Tortona, Fuorisalone. It is revealed that to absorb the emissions produced by 90,000 cars in a year, Kuma’s “Breath/ng” is created from 120 hand-folded origami “Breath” panels made from a cutting-edge nano-molecule activated core fabric which separates and absorbs toxic molecules! Kuma’s “BREATH/ng” is made from a cutting-edge fabric with a nano-molecule activated core that separates and absorbs toxic molecules. Developed by Anemotech, this pollutionneutralizing material uses the natural flow of air to purify the surrounding environment.

Kengo Kuma and Associates’ BREATH/ng installation purifies the air using huge suspended coils of a special pollution-neutralising fabric, and its creators hope to inspire other designers to tackle sustainability in their own work.
