Photography: Nils Koenning / City of Melbourne. Sustainability was the key focus in the redevelopment of the Fitzroy Gardens Visitor Centre, with the challenge to reduce its impact on the environment through design and function. The visitor centre was reimagined with a green facade and passive temperature control measures. The cooling system consists of a rock store beneath the floor that retains cool temperatures, natural ventilation through open windows and fans, and the green facade, which cools the exterior. The windows were located so as to maximise natural light and reduce the need for electrical lighting. Foster + Partners’ new sustainable vision for MOL Campus in Budapest
View from the lake towards the tower,
View from the atrium towards the tower
Designs for MOL Campus, the new headquarters for the MOL Group, a global oil and gas company based in Hungary were revealed today. The new building is a vision for the workplace of the future that places sustainability at the heart of the campus. Located in Southern Budapest, it is set to be the tallest building in the city, consolidating the company’s Budapest operations in a single location. Nigel Dancey, Head of Studio, Foster + Partners said: “This is a landmark project for several reasons, not only for MOL but also for Budapest. It presents a unique challenge – to ensure that the building meets the functional needs of the organisation, follows the highest standards of sustainability, and is respectful of its historic surroundings.” An evolutionary response to the traditional two-part towerpodium typology, the building’s unique form integrates a 28-storey tower with a podium a single form to create a unified campus. Its glazed façade sweeps up in a smooth curve from the entrance to the top of the tower, infusing the entire building with a sense of interconnectivity. Greenery follows the same trajectory, travelling through the heart of the building, from the central atrium on the ground floor, linked with skygardens throughout the tower, and culminating in a public garden at the top of the building. These green spaces also act as a social catalyst throughout the building, encouraging collaboration, relaxation and inspiration by bringing nature closer to the workplace. “As we see the nature of the workplace changing to a more collaborative vision, we have combined two buildings – a tower and a podium – into a singular form, bound by nature. As the tower and the podium start to become one element, there is a sense of connectivity throughout the office spaces, with garden spaces linking each of the floors together” added Dancey. Offset service cores create large flexible areas that further encourage collaborative patterns of working. Using cutting edge technology to control light levels, temperature and views these workspaces are finely calibrated to create the perfect working environment, a light filled inspirational space for people to work in.
Mol Campus daytime view looking towards the old city
Setting a new benchmark both for Budapest and Hungary, the design of the building makes the most of its urban context to drive a sustainable response. The MOL Campus seeks to preserve live-work relationships as part of the urban experience, where people are able to walk or cycle to work. All occupants have a direct connection to the external environment providing fresh air, daylight and views, and the building utilises low and zero carbon energy sources, such as photovoltaics, also featuring rainwater harvesting and storage facilities. Zsolt Hernádi, Chairman-CEO, MOL Group commented: “As part of our 2030 strategy announced last year we have set the goal for MOL to be the first choice for employees. Building our new headquarters, the MOL Campus, will help to achieve this objective. The structure will be Central-Europe’s most innovative workspace and will help attract talent of the future. MOL intends to build a headquarters without compromising on

Enlightened, Fresh Air for a Healthy House Introducing Environmental Sciences Australia’s: SkyVent / SkyVent + VentaLite / SkyVent Hybrid +
SkyVent is the only product of its type on the market (Natural Daylight and Ventilation) that can achieve 60 L/sec exhaust at 12Km/hr (Sydney’s average wind speed). The BCA - AS 1668.2 wet area performance requirement is 25 L/ sec extraction. The unit also has superior stack effect and buoyancy extraction due to its CFD analysed unobstructed flow path. SkyVent (for the attic) The SkyVent allows daylight and ventilation into the attic space reducing heat, condensation, and keeping insulation dry and effective. SkyVent is an aerodynamic foil that works by using natural wind energy to create negative pressure at the rear of the unit. This is a more efficient form of wind extraction than rotating cowl vents. SkyVent’s innovative design also has improved stack and buoyancy characteristics and can operate like a solar chimney even when there is no wind, unlike a cowl type vent that suffers from throat blockages and restrictions. The SkyVent worked more efficiently than its competitors as tested by University of Technology, Sydney. Unlike solar powered vents, SkyVent works 24/7 and provides the vital night time cooling so important in summer. SkyVent + VentaLite (for inside the house) The SkyVent + VentaLite is a revolutionary dual function tubular skylight and ventilator. It brings the functions of a tubular skylight and a ventilator into one low cost product, with a single installation cost. The skylight is ventilated by the advanced designed Wind Directional transparent dome that points into the wind and extracts hot, moist air out the house. The SkyVent is a low cost method of reducing artificial lighting and associated heat.
Ventilation is provided via the flexible light tube venting moisture directly outside of the building envelope. By removing hot, moist air at its source, condensation inside the house is dramatically reduced. The indoor air quality of the house is greatly improved by reduced mould, mildew, fungal spores and associated dust mites. The smart design also allows continuous air flow, trickle ventilation or no ventilation by simply opening or closing the diffuser - Truly an advanced system with the home owner’s comfort in mind! No wonder the SkyVent has received so much recognition. SkyVent Hybrid + (Ultimate wet room solution)
The ultimate solution for bathroom ventilation and daylighting. The SkyVent Hybrid + has all the benefits of the SkyVent + VentaLite 24/7 natural ventilation with the added boost of a ducted extraction fan to remove steam during showering or whenever additional ventilation is required. The extraction fan only draws 35W when running and is a cost efficient solution to solve moisture build up in any bathroom. Any moist air extracted via the fan goes straight up the VentaLite tube and out the SkyVent on the roof. Use for maximum moisture extraction outside of the building envelope. Performance SkyVent’s extraction rate has been measured using AS4740 to be 3,600 L/min @ 12 km/ hr (Sydney’s average wind speed). For a bathroom of 3.5 m x 2.5 m x 2.4 m = 20 m3, which is 20,000 Litres of air, the SkyVent can achieve over 10 Air Changes/ Hour (ACH) using no power.

Australian Limestone Australia processes some of the largest deposits of limestone in the world and is a great resource for building and construction. Limestone block work on this coastal home forms the base of this construction grounding the building to the earth. Being dimensionally cut to match 4 courses of brick, limestone integrates seamlessly into normal construction techniques. The natural organic textures of limestone compliment the surfaces of timber and render that the stone abuts and fits perfectly in the natural Australian garden it dwells.

Kordon Termite Barrier is a uniquely flexible building protection tool that provides a combined physical and repellant termite barrier – and can easily be moulded or cut and joined to fit complex design features. Complete underslab installation of Kordon provides an impermeable moisture barrier for the entire building as well. Developed in Australia (a licensed Australian-Made product), Kordon is backed by global resources of Bayer. In on-going assessment since 1989 by Bayer, Kordon has achieved 100% success as a physical termite barrier. Kordon has also been tested and evaluated by the CSIRO, Australian Building Codes Board, State Forestry Departments, State Building Authorities and experts in buiding design.
50 Year Performance When correctly installed, Kordon will last 50+ years. Kordon is covered by a 6 year product warranty, and Bayer also now offers homeowners an exclusive $1 million Bayer Protection Warranty.

AUSTRALIAN-MADE TERMITE BARRIER FROM BAYER
According to the CSIRO, termites cause $780 million of damage in Australia each year. They enter homes via underground tunnels. By the time they’re discovered, they can cause considerable damage. Termites build protective mud tubes up brickwork or around physical barriers to gain access to food – the timber homes are constructed with. Specifying a Kordon Termite Barrier, in conjunction with an annual termite inspection by a qualified professional, will protect the home from termites for up to 50+ years. Installing Kordon means termites cannot get into the home undetected. If there was no Kordon installed, termites would be able to do a significant amount of damage before they were detected. Kordon operates as an “early warning system”.
How Kordon Works Kordon contains deltamethrin, a synthetic pyrethroid that kills termites which come into contact with it. Equally importantly though, deltamethrin is a powerful termite repellant, so termites are very unlikely even to approach the barrier and attempt to breach it. Kordon is classified as a building product and it is approved for use in local government areas where soil termiticide treatments have been prohibited. Specify Kordon®, for peace of mind.

Plans for Melbourne’s New Innovation Precinct Approved Architect: Woods Bagot, Melbourne
The Victorian Government has approved the University of Melbourne’s plan to develop the site of Melbourne’s former Royal Women’s Hospital into Australia’s leading innovation precinct. 22
The precinct’s masterplan and lead design architect is Woods Bagot, as part of the Lendlease led consortium working in partnership with the university on the transformational project. A flagship initiative, the precinct will develop facilities where university staff and students, researchers, local and
international businesses and start-up companies can connect and collaborate on generating breakthrough new ideas and take them to market. Located on the fringe of Melbourne’s CBD and adjacent to the university’s main Parkville campus, the former hospital
Archi-Tech Services Pty Ltd
will now be redeveloped as a series of five new connecting buildings focused around a central ‘Oculus’ and publiclyaccessible open space. The precinct will provide shops, cafes, public spaces, accommodation for more than 500 students and visiting academics, a childcare centre and Science Gallery Melbourne, which will deliver cuttingedge exhibitions, events and experiences. As well as co-working and commercial office space, it will feature a Fab Lab and a ‘Superfloor’ dedicated to collaboration and fostering the exchange of ideas. Woods Bagot principal and project design leader, Hazel Porter, described the new precinct as unprecedented in Australia. “For this extraordinary site to support people working together in the creative and entrepreneurial ways envisioned by the University of Melbourne’s ambitious plan for innovation, we needed to completely re-think what the project could offer back to both the university and to Melbourne’s urban innovation,” said Ms Porter. “What we’ve generated are new forms and, importantly, opportunities for exceptional circulation through the site and a great diversity of spaces at ground level, as well as maximising sunlight for wellbeing and sustainability,” she said.
INSITE - Winter 2018
Woods Bagot’s scheme for the purposebuilt precinct and its facilities meets the highest standards of design and sustainability design. Its bold architecture delivers an iconic presence as both a legacy of the site’s history and
a symbol of the university’s unyielding pursuit of excellence in education and industry collaboration. From winning the university’s design competition for the project in December 2016 and throughout the scheme’s
23
development, Woods Bagot’s approach places people at the centre of the design. “Innovation comes from people, the way they interact, the way they collaborate on a common purpose. Therefore, it’s essential that every part of this scheme lives and breathes human-centred design,” Ms Porter said. Woods Bagot principal and global education sector leader, Sarah Ball, said the University of Melbourne is at the forefront of education providers who are intelligently transforming their campuses to attract the best and brightest across the spectrum – staff, students, researchers, industry partners. “Providing an exceptional educational and professional experience to attract the best and brightest demands the setting of a new global benchmark to stay competitive on the world stage of higher education. “This education and innovation precinct will complement the Melbourne Biomedical Precinct in Parkville and the Arts Precinct in Southbank. It’s also part of the emerging Melbourne Innovation Districts – a City of Melbourne initiative to drive investment in the knowledge economy and help shape Melbourne’s future,” Ms Ball said. Construction on the project will begin this year and is expected to be complete by 2020. Located on one of the most iconic streets in Melbourne for food, fashion, proximity to city and all the major sporting entertainment venues this heritage listed boutique hotel on Flinders Lane boasts an extraordinary address! Having already worked on The Sebel Flinders Lane major refurbishment of 68 hotel suites in 2011 for Accor Vacation Club, Penny del Castillo and her IN DESIGN INTERNATIONAL design team were delighted to be back on board for the next round of renovations. This time the hotel was ready for upgrades to the reception, AVC sales deck, kids club, courtyard and “a newly created honeymoon suite”. Our client’s brief was to create a “home away from home” ambience for the members and guests. Classic, sophisticated elegance is portrayed throughout the project fit-out. There is an immediate sense of nostalgia upon arrival derived from the decorative custom-made wrought iron wall panel behind the bank teller style reception stations. “We had a very small footprint to work The typical suites are equally well appointed

Unlike the reception area, the typical guest accommodation rooms are extremely generous in proportion: The new honeymoon suite offers a separate formal entry, living room, dining room, kitchenette/bar, 2 x bedrooms, 2 x bathrooms, a private courtyard accessible from a decadent master ensuite and direct access to the newly rejuvenated central courtyard!
We further enhanced our original

Fly over Lake Pieman and one might assume the bleached white branches punctuating the mystic water are the stark rotting canopy of a swallowed landscape. But that would be wrong. Beneath these tannin-rich waters an ancient forest stands, submerged when the Pieman River was dammed to generate hydro-electricity. Submerged that is, until two Tasmanians took the Hydrowood dive. They embarked on arguably Australia’s most ambitious forestry project. Unrivalled feats of modern engineering were driven by a bold yet unchartered vision. The reward? Buried treasure. Timbers so scarce, the world thought they were forever gone. Legendary Huon pine, eons in the making, stood gallantly beside Eucalypts and Tasmanian myrtle. With an ethical plunge, they created history by resurrecting these precious timbers. The environmentally affable mission didn’t deliver your average reclaimed wood though. Hydrowood has a purity. No rusty nails or bolts from a previous life. Instead, untouched grain. Not salvaged timber, long dead on a musty floor but rare timber master builders dream of, harvested in a way you wouldn’t believe. Harvesting trees underwater is the same as on land, but upside down. Rather than reaching for the canopy, the waterproof harvester plunges deep below. From the custom built barge, they able to harvest just as swiftly as a landbased operation. Just upside down. Recovering timbers from delicate surrounds requires an ethical and environmentally sound approach. As such, every part of the operation is informed by strict environmental guidelines. For instance, stumps are cut cleanly to minimise sedimentation and they use best practice biodegradable oils. In a way, Hydrowood are custodians of this re-emerging forest; an honour and a responsibility. In salvaging this otherwise wasted resource, they’re delivering some of the world’s most environmentally friendly timber. Today, these once forgotten timbers are being shaped into furniture, flooring and bespoke architectural features in residential and commercial applications. Meals are prepared on Hydrowood benchtops whilst feet walk over Eucalypt floorboards – timber once submerged. Indeed these timbers can be used for any project requiring thoughtful, striking material. When you make something with Hydrowood, it comes with a story, a provenance not found in any other timber product. Whelan’s are the Australian distributor for Hydrowood producing bespoke architectural solutions for internal and external applications.

BASEMENT VENTILATION -
I love mould with my Grange Hermitage! Ventilation makes cents (dollars actually!) Thanks for the continuing feedback and enquiry from my recent articles around the double glazing conundrum and the ignorance of the simple physics of bathroom extraction. Today, I’ll continue to share some experiences that will hopefully inspire you to take a fresh look at the air quality you are delivering to your projects and possibly in your own homes.
Double your living space – the answer is under your feet. We recently completed a project in Paddington (a sought after and very expensive suburb on Sydney’s eastern fringe). We were asked to ventilate a basement that had been excavated into sandstone and was to be used for general household storage. The builder and architect had constructed some clever natural light wells into the space. I suggested that whilst 40 square metres of storage was real estate gold in inner city Sydney, 40 square metres of living space was real estate platinum. We installed an automated, filtered positive pressure ventilation system in this property that doubled the living space and conservatively added five hundred grand to the value of the property. Not bad for a $4000 investment.
I love mould with my Grange Hermitage. Let’s talk about the mouldy basement and wine cellar. The good news is that your wine is unlikely to be spoiled by damp and mould as it is in a sealed container. The bad news is that you risk your health every time you enter your damp, musty cellar. As for handling that
precious bottle of your favourite drop, the mould will be on your hands and up your nose and will certainly interfere with your enjoyment of your favourite liquid ambrosia.
Your pushbikes, golf clubs and old sporting trophies don’t breathe.
all joined the union. In the event of moisture/movement its “one out all out!” Historically, timber floor have been top nailed – so the boards can move independently. Modern floors rarely have this flexibility. Insure your new floor with subfloor ventilation. And you will get a much better job if its done before the new floor is installed.
When you convert that old storage area to a home office or teenagers retreat, you will typically want to breathe in your new space. Often such spaces are resurrected from under a house or are a repurposed shed, basement or garage. Often such rooms are excavated and have little or no cross flow ventilation. Often such rooms attract little direct sun. So it’s no surprise that often such rooms have significant indoor air quality issues.

To install a new timber floor without addressing subfloor ventilation is like driving an uninsured car. Surely, it’s common sense that if you have had to replace a timber floor and/or its substrate the ONLY thing that could have caused it to rot could be excess moisture? The other major issue with modern floors is that they are so finely machined and installed with hidden nails. They are so tightly packed that they have

Increase Your Entertaining Area ! Install a Ceiling Under Your Timber Deck Underdeck is manufactured in Australia, and solves the age old problem for those who have wanted to utilise under the deck space and keep it dry in the wet, and also expand their outdoor living space.
Back Before Back After
Underdeck is a specially designed pre-engineered ceiling system that transforms the unsightliness of the underside of the deck into a desirable and usable outdoor living area all year round. Up to now there has not been any standard way to cover under your deck, just many individual ideas, and most are very hard to dismantle for cleaning, or retrieving something that has been dropped through from above, till now. Underdeck panels catch the water dripping through the deck gap and channels the water away to the gutter running along one edge. Underdeck is designed to catch the water even during heavy rain storms. It’s a simple system. The water carrying panels are hung from specially designed brackets that are fixed to the bottom of the joists, with a fall towards the gutter. All the panels are interlocked to prevent leaks.
Architects Underdeck is the perfect solution for both home and commercial solutions when waterproofing under a deck or balcony is required. It can be used as a ceiling on all types of applications inside and outside. A product which will save money when requiring waterproofing under decks and balconies, with no maintenance or painting. It looks smart and can be used for many applications inside or outside. Made from recycled and recyclable metal that provides strength and resistance to the harshest of elements.

This Australian designed and manufactured product is aimed at reducing energy costs by preventing hot or cold air from entering the home via the ceiling exhaust fan. Made entirely from recyclable, fire retardant materials, the DraftStoppa is simple to install, requires little maintenance and can be fitted over most standard exhaust fans in new homes as well as being retro-fitted into established homes.
OPEN
The DraftStoppa Prevents hot or cold air entering from the roof cavity. Prevents polluted air or cooking smells from entering into other parts of the home or workplace. Exceeds the Sustainable Energy Authority Victoria ‘First Rate’ energy rating performance level requirements for a totally self sealing exhaust fan. Is economically priced and adapts to most major ceiling exhaust fans.
Be aware of imported replicas
Fits most standard and 3 in 1 type ceiling exhaust fans. Is simple to install and opens and closes effortlessly without loading-up your ceiling exhaust fan motor. Is fully recyclable.
Testing by Complex Air Conditioning Pty Ltd, and reviewed by the Victorian Sustainable Energy Authority, indicates that in areas where ceiling exhaust fans are in use this can give an energy saving of up to 30% Test results concluded that in Winter conditions with an outside temperature of 1ºC and an average internal room (10m x 4m x 2.7m - volume 108m³ and an ambient internal temperature of 15.5ºC), the cold air inflow from the roof cavity through an unsealed fan into the room was measured at 13 litres/second. This means that in every hour 46.8m³ of cold air would have entered the room and the total volume of warm air would be replaced every 2 hours and 20 minutes at a huge reheating cost.
