Certified Room Darkening Fabric Greenstar - GBCA
Vertilux is proud to introduce Eurobloc™ Eco; the FIRST manufactured room darkening fabric to receive Global GreenTag certification with a GreenRate Level A after rigorous evaluation from the internationally recognised ecolabelling organisation. Developed with the primary purpose of reducing ecotoxicity and designed to meet stringent standards in light glare reduction and insulation from harmful UV rays, EuroBloc™ Eco also has very low VOC emissions. Being a Trevira CS fabric, it has the added benefit of being inherently flame retardant. Not only does EuroBloc™ Eco effectively reduce heat, ultraviolet rays and glare transmitted into internal spaces but provides thermal insulation as well. These benefits include an increased occupant comfort level and a potential reduction in energy use for cooling and heating loads placed on air conditioning systems.

PROTECTING ENTRANCE LOBBIES
THE STAR CASINO SYDNEY
LEDA’s engineers have assisted in designing, manufacturing and installing High Security Crash Rated Bollards for the entrance areas at The Star Casinos in Sydney and Gold Coast.
At The Sydney Casino we were faced with the added task of disguising the security bollards. This was done by fitting stainless steel sleeves with the Star logo engraved on the lid. They were finished with a bronze metallic finish. In addition LED lighting was incorporated in to the base of the bollard sleeves resulting in an aesthetically attractive outcome. In the case of The Gold Coast Casino it was simply a security upgrade at the front entrance for the recent Commonwealth Games. The front facade and main entrance of the building was secured by installation of 22 LEDA certified and tested shallow mount bollards fitted with stainless steel sleeves.

PLANS FOR FORMER CONVENTION CENTRE SITE UNVEILED
A triple-tower development is set to reactivate one of Melbourne’s most important gateway sites and contribute to the creation of a new precinct within the CBD. The 4,500 square metre site at 7-23 Spencer Street has laid dormant for several years after the former Congress Centre/Convention Centre behind Crowne Plaza was demolished. It is a key gateway to the CBD and boasts iconic, east-facing views down the Yarra River. New plans by developer Century Group Aus will see three terraced towers of up to 33 levels designed by Fender Katsalidis revitalise the area with an activated precinct for residents and visitors. Across the three towers, the precinct will feature 500 luxury apartments, 167 five star hotel rooms, 2,100 square metres of retail and a vibrant pedestrian precinct and plaza on Siddley Street that will contribute to Melbourne’s public art reputation. “Flinders Bank will contribute enormously to the betterment of this part of the city, where a new DNA is emerging and lots of new life is being created,” said Karl Fender, founding partner of Fender Katsalidis (FK). “This is the front door to the city and what is being created here is a whole new precinct that has people at its heart.
6
Holistically, this strengthens the connectivity of Docklands to the CBD and increases the stature of our city.” FK is leading the regeneration of the southwest corner of the city with the adjacent Melbourne Quarter project and Riverlee’s Northbank precinct. When looked at collectively, the three projects will contribute to an expansion of the CBD core and link the city to the Docklands, Fishermans Bend and the evergrowing western suburbs. “Flinders Bank in particular will give something back to Melbourne for the people who live and play here,” Mr Fender added. The development includes a new laneway linking Flinders and Siddley Streets as part of the activation the site and provide connections from the river to the CBD. A public plaza will also feature, leading into a retail podium of 3 levels that links the eastern and western towers. This retail precinct is envisaged to contain a combination of stores as well as landmark dining, with tenancies on Spencer Street featuring expansive views of the Yarra River and CBD including the Eureka Tower and Arts Centre. Already a rooftop bar has been earmarked for the podium

of precinct’s southern tower, where the hotel will be located - taking advantage of the amazing views. The vision for the precinct will be delivered by Century Group Aus, headed up by Executive Director Connie Wu in Melbourne. Century Group Aus intends to tap into its relationships with many of the world’s most luxurious hotel brands to bring landmark accommodation down under. It recently secured the luxury St. Regis Hotels and Resorts brand to operate the hotel component; the first

St. Regis in Australia. It recently launched the first stage of the project - the residential eastern tower boasting remarkable river views. “We are known internationally for delivering at the highest levels of quality and creating developments that contribute to the fabric of a city and give back to its people,” Ms Wu said. “This is a strategically important site for Melbourne, and we feel a great responsibility to create a precinct that locals and visitors will engage with.
7
“That Fender Katsalidis is overseeing the broader area holistically, means Melbourne will benefit from a fully integrated approach that redefines this key part of the city and reimagines it as a vibrant area in which to work, live, play and stay.” Approved by Planning Minister Richard Wynne in 2016, Flinders Bank’s design was revised by Century Group Aus when it purchased the site, with the yield reduced to cater for current market conditions that are seeing a demand for larger apartments located among strong amenity. The design is inspired by the flow of the nearby Yarra River, and the architecture responds to the site, protecting the riverside from overshadowing through its stepped-back approach. The Spencer Street façade features an active skin which will add to the sense of vibrancy and activity whilst taking advantage of the existing river views.

Sverdlovsk Philharmonic Concert Hall
Yekaterinburg, Russia by Zaha Hadid Architects October 2018 Zaha Hadid Architects has been selected by the jury of the international design competition to build the new Sverdlovsk Philharmonic Concert Hall in Yekaterinburg, Russia. Considered the capital of the Urals, the city of Yekaterinburg is Russia’s third largest economy. Its population has increased by over 10% in the past decade to 1.5 million and continues to grow as the primary hub and meeting point connecting east and west, Europe and Asia; attracting the many cultures, talents and industries from across Eurasia. Yekaterinburg has built a rich musical tradition and established its reputation as a cultural and artistic centre. The city’s acclaimed Ural Philharmonic Orchestra has performed in more than 20 countries and collaborates with renowned artists worldwide. The orchestra cultivates aspiring young talent and

the surface deformations of the suspended canopy; liberating the lobbies from obstructions to open this space as a vibrant new gathering place for the local community.
Performing to full houses all year round in the existing Sverdlovsk Philharmonic building that dates from 1936, the orchestra’s new home will provide an inspirational venue to meet the increasing popularity of the orchestra’s programme of concerts – and also create a new public plaza for the people of the city.
This new 21st century addition will inhabit the void between the existing buildings and Weiner Gardens; not
Echoing the physical aspects of sound waves, the design of the new Philharmonic Concert Hall is based on the properties of musical sound resonance creating wave vibrations in a continuous smooth surface. The design reinterprets these physical acoustic properties to define spaces for the auditoria that are suspended within the canopy, appearing to float above the new civic plaza that is both the lobby of the Philharmonic Concert Hall and an enclosed urban square. Providing a 1,600-seat Concert Hall and a 400seat Chamber Music Hall of the highest acoustic standards, these new auditoria are nestled within

competing with these heritage buildings, but complementing the ensemble that will include the preservation and renovation of the current concert hall as an integral element of the new worldclass facility that will be one of the focal points of the city’s cultural life. Similarly, the new building does not impose upon the adjacent Weiner Gardens but seamlessly merges with the natural landscape; opening its transparent glass facade to offer views of the renovated gardens that includes an amphitheatre for outdoor performances throughout the summer. The lobby serves not only as an introduction to the world of symphony music, but also as a welcoming public plaza for all members of its local community. The existing Sverdlovsk Philharmonic Hall is housed within the city’s old Civic Assembly Building that was originally built as a club for all citizens to gather. The new design revives and enhances this commendable civic legacy; its spaces designed to function as a centre of Yekaterinburg’s civic, social and cultural life. Enhancing its connections with the surrounding urban fabric of the city, large glazed facades blur the boundary between interior and exterior; inviting visitors to experience the spaces within that celebrate public gathering, civic forum and creative endeavour. The Philharmonic Concert Hall’s procession of interconnected public spaces continues through the building to its rooftop terrace overlooking the city’s Church of All Saints.

Christos Passas, Project Director at Zaha Hadid Architects, said: “Russia has been a formative influence on Zaha Hadid Architects’ creative work. From very early in her career, Zaha was attracted to the Russian avant-garde who conceived civic spaces as urban condensers that catalyse a public realm of activity to enrich creativity and community; allowing space itself to enhance our understanding and well-being. These principles are embedded within the design of the new Sverdlovsk Philharmonic Concert Hall.” Pavel Krekov, Deputy-Governor of the Sverdlovsk Oblast region, Head of the Project Office for the new Philharmonic Concert Hall and Chairman of the competition jury, said: “This project will enrich the city and provide the highest international acoustic and technical standards.” Dmitry Liss, Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Ural Philharmonic Orchestra and member of the design competition jury, said: “For musicians, this new hall is crucial. It will be a musical instrument that brings the sound to life.” 47 international teams submitted proposals to the design competition that was organised by the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure Development of the Sverdlovsk Region with the assistance of the charitable foundation for support of the Ural Philharmonic Orchestra.

A HOMECOMING DESIGN: FRANKLIN SQUARE
Good Design Award Gold Winner 2018 prize
Nestled within the heart of Hobart between the city and historic Sullivan’s Cove, sits one of Hobart’s classic parks, Franklin Square. A quiet refuge for office dwellers on their lunch breaks and a sanctuary for tourists and families alike, this iconic park has maintained its existence since the 1860’s and has just undergone an award-winning revamp featuring Hydrowood Celery Top. Old favourites and new features Thirty years since its last refurbishment, the city called upon the parks previous designer and Tasmanian native, David Shaw from Street & Garden to take on its most recent update. Tapping in to the state’s abundant resources, materials and talent for the project, Hydrowood Celery Top Pine was selectively chosen as a featured material. A range of updates including new pavements and pathways, garden beds, lighting features and commissioned furniture from Street & Garden, were included in Franklin Square’s complete revamp. Subtle details making a nod to the park’s former glory, such as the water fountain and beloved life-size chess, were kept in the redevelopment. David and his team designed a series of twelve-meter long curved benches as well as separate benches with a special storage element to hold the chess 18
pieces, from Hydrowood Celery Top Pine. Like other elements in the Square, Hydrowood Celery Top Pine also makes a nod to the past. It is reclaimed timber that once rested at the bottom of Lake Pieman, a hydro dam, before being innovatively harvested and dried and put to use in Franklin Square for all Tasmanian’s and visitors to enjoy. “The design found across the backs of the benches in Franklin Square casts a beautiful splash-like pattern across the celery-top pine when the sun shines through. The timber is really brought to life when the pattern dances across it and it brings a playful element to the project,” said David. Celery Top Pine is valued for its durability, making it a great choice for external use. It has been a favourite with boat builders for generations. The wood is creamy white when freshly cut and darkens to a mellow rosy gold hue over time and with exposure to sunlight. The wood is light and easy to work with but is also hard, dense and strong, making it an ideal choice for furniture.
Award winning design The Franklin Square project, along with the Hobart Waterfront redevelopment that Street & Garden were also a part of, has been well received by the public and the design industry, landing the design firm a Good Design Award Gold
Winner 2018 prize. “As a young Tasmanian designer, some of my first exhibitions were here and I received so much support from the community. “Thirty years later, I was thrilled to be a part of the design process again and felt very connected to the project. It was a great way to give back to the city after all of the support I was shown when I was starting my career.”

Kordon Termite Barrier is a uniquely flexible building protection tool that provides a combined physical and repellant termite barrier – and can easily be moulded or cut and joined to fit complex design features. Complete underslab installation of Kordon provides an impermeable moisture barrier for the entire building as well. Developed in Australia (a licensed Australian-Made product), Kordon is backed by global resources of Bayer. In on-going assessment since 1989 by Bayer, Kordon has achieved 100% success as a physical termite barrier. Kordon has also been tested and evaluated by the CSIRO, Australian Building Codes Board, State Forestry Departments, State Building Authorities and experts in buiding design.
50 Year Performance When correctly installed, Kordon will last 50+ years. Kordon is covered by a 6 year product warranty, and Bayer also now offers homeowners an exclusive $1 million Bayer Protection Warranty.

AUSTRALIAN-MADE TERMITE BARRIER FROM BAYER
According to the CSIRO, termites cause $780 million of damage in Australia each year. They enter homes via underground tunnels. By the time they’re discovered, they can cause considerable damage. Termites build protective mud tubes up brickwork or around physical barriers to gain access to food – the timber homes are constructed with. Specifying a Kordon Termite Barrier, in conjunction with an annual termite inspection by a qualified professional, will protect the home from termites for up to 50+ years. Installing Kordon means termites cannot get into the home undetected. If there was no Kordon installed, termites would be able to do a significant amount of damage before they were detected. Kordon operates as an “early warning system”.
How Kordon Works Kordon contains deltamethrin, a synthetic pyrethroid that kills termites which come into contact with it. Equally importantly though, deltamethrin is a powerful termite repellant, so termites are very unlikely even to approach the barrier and attempt to breach it. Kordon is classified as a building product and it is approved for use in local government areas where soil termiticide treatments have been prohibited. Specify Kordon®, for peace of mind.

Bloomberg wins RIBA Stirling Prize 2018
Architect: Foster + Partners
Two buildings connected by link bridges and divided by a pedestrianised dining arcade
Archi-Tech Services Pty Ltd Bloomberg Arcade, a pedestrianised dining thoroughfare that features ten independent restaurants
Bloomberg’s new European headquarters, located in the heart of the City of London, has been awarded the Stirling Prize 2018. The judges called the building a “once-in-a-generation project”, that has “not just raised the bar for office design and city planning but smashed the ceiling.” The spirit of innovation and collaboration that underpins the building was led by the vision of Mike Bloomberg, Founder of Bloomberg L.P. and Bloomberg Philanthropies, who said: “When we embarked on this project, we wanted to create a cutting-edge design that would push the boundaries of what an office building could be, which meant setting new standards for openness and sustainability. At the same time, we wanted to honour London’s history and contribute to its vitality. We knew that if we could achieve both objectives, we’d have a building that would inspire everyone who set foot inside it. This prize indicates that -- thanks to the brilliant Norman Foster -- we succeeded. And we’re grateful to everyone who worked so hard to bring it to life.” Foster + Partners also gains the distinction of being the first practice to have been awarded the Stirling Prize three times, having won it previously in 1998 for the American Air Museum in Duxford, and in 2004 for 30 St Mary Axe.
The Vortex is a literal and metaphorical ‘twist’ on the classic timber-panelled lobbies that define many London buildings
“From our first discussions to the final details of the project, Mike Bloomberg and I had a ‘meeting of minds’ on every aspect of the project – its sustainable focus, commitment to innovation and drive to create the best workplace for Bloomberg employees. It is due to his enlightened patronage and the hands on role that he played throughout the design process, that has made Bloomberg a resounding success. He is one of those rare individuals who truly ‘practice what they preach’, marrying the sustainable vision for Bloomberg with his own personal convictions, laid out so succinctly in his book – ‘The Climate of Hope’. The Stirling Prize is a testament to the incredible collaborative spirit that has underpinned the entire project from start to finish, and to Mike’s pioneering vision.” Norman Foster, Founder and Executive Chairman Foster + Partners “Behind every good building is a great client and Bloomberg is a testament to what is possible when the visions of client and architect align. We were continually supported and inspired by Mike Bloomberg and his team, who shared our values on innovation, sustainability and wellbeing to develop a pioneering new workplace for the future. We are delighted that Bloomberg has been awarded the Stirling Prize, as recognition of not only this special partnership, but also the immense collaboration by the entire team that underpinned and delivered the project.” Michael Jones, Senior Partner and Lead Architect, Foster + Partners Bloomberg’s new European headquarters is respectful of its location in the heart of the City of London, close to the Bank of England, St. Paul’s Cathedral and the church of St. Stephen’s Walbrook. In its form, massing and materials, the new building is uniquely of their place and time – a natural extension of the City that will endure and improve the

surrounding public realm. It is a true exemplar of sustainable development, with a BREEAM Outstanding rating, and the highest design-stage score ever achieved by any major office development. Occupying a full city block, the 3.2-acre site comprises two buildings united by bridges that span over a pedestrian arcade that reinstates Watling Street, an ancient Roman road that ran through the site. Bloomberg Arcade is now a key route for people moving around the City, with restaurants and cafes at ground level, set back behind an undulating façade under a covered colonnade. Three public plazas, located at each end of the arcade and in front of the building’s entrance, provide new civic spaces in the heart of the Square Mile. Its striking façade is defined by a structural sandstone frame, with a series of large-scale bronze fins that shade the floor-toceiling glazing. The fins give the building a visual hierarchy and rhythm as they vary in scale, pitch and density across each façade according to orientation and solar exposure, while being an integral part of the building’s natural ventilation system. Art plays a central role in the project, with major site-specific commissions in and around the building. Cristina Iglesias’ water sculpture in three parts, ‘Forgotten Streams’ – a homage to the ancient Walbrook River that once flowed through the site – defines the public spaces at each end of Bloomberg Arcade. The new Bloomberg building also returns the archaeological remains of the Roman Temple of Mithras to the site of their original discovery, with a new interpretation centre and cultural hub designed to give visitors an immersive experience of the temple and bring the history of the site to life.

Mould, Asthma & the Healthy House Ventilation: What does NZ Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) recommend? www.energywise.govt.nz/at-home/ventilation “Good ventilation is essential to maintaining air quality and removing excess moisture from your home. Having a draughty house isn’t the same as good ventilation. As houses get more airtight, they are easier to heat, but good ventilation is still important to stop inside air becoming stale and damp. “ Removing stale air and moisture improves indoor air quality and limits the growth of mould on indoor surfaces decreasing the impact on asthma and other health conditions. SkyVent Hybrid + provides a low cost, environmental systems approach. Daylight and 24/7 natural ventilation with a mechanical boost removing moisture outside the building envelope.
SkyVent Hybrid +
Environmental Performance: ●● Fully tested to AS/NZ 4740 at the University of Technology, Sydney, Aerodynamics Laboratory. ●● Extracts 3,600L/min of air with a 12km/hr wind speed. ●● Extracts hot, moist air even when there is no wind (stack effect). ●● Daylighting reduces artificial lighting, saving power, and helping fight mould. ●● SkyVent Hybrid + = natural ventilation, daylight and mechanical ventilation (when required).
An average size bathroom with a shower of 3m (length) x 2m (width) x 2.4m (height) needs 216m3 of air per hour to be extracted to achieve 15 air changes per hour (ACH). At Sydney’s average wind speed of 12km/hr the SkyVent alone provides the 216m3/hr required. Many bathrooms with showers may not have adequate air intake and in these cases a mechanical exhaust fan is recommended. The answer is the SkyVent Hybrid + with attached bathroom exhaust fan (IPX2 rated, 420m3/hr) connected to the SkyVent tube to vent hot, moist air directly outside the building envelope (not into the roof cavity where it either condenses or is recirculated internally). The exhaust fan only operates when you choose, or can be combined to the light switch and only draws 35W, super economical!

CUTTING-EDGE DESIGN FOR NEW SYDNEY FISH MARKET UNVEILED Architects: 3XN in collaboration with BVN, GXN & Landscape Architect - Aspect Studios
The largest fish market in the southern hemisphere is also envisioned as a major public and cultural amenity and an icon for Sydney. Gladys Berejiklian, Premier of New South Wales, unveiled the designs for the new Sydney fish market to the public. The building, which was designed by renowned Danish architecture firm 3XN in collaboration with local architect BVN, GXN Innovation, and landscape architect Aspect Studios, is the first step in an ambitious plan to revitalise Sydney’s Blackwattle Bay. The landmark building will operate as a working market while simultaneously establishing a public connection to the water’s edge at Blackwattle Bay. The Sydney Fish Market is currently one of the most significant community and visitor destinations in the city. 3XN’s winning team was selected through an international process for the relocation of the existing fish market, with a mandate to integrate significant sustainable and public amenity elements. 3XN approached this project with the specific goal of creating more than just a fish market; it is first and foremost a major cultural facility that enhances the existing market operations while creating generous public amenity to unlock the waterfront for Sydney-siders and visitors alike. “This building will be many things when it is done: a working fish market, an amenity for the city, a cultural destination, an urban connector, and an inspiring icon along the worldrenowned Sydney Harbour,” explains Kim Herforth Nielsen, Founding Partner of 3XN. “The natural value of the water’s edge should not be underestimated and should be accessible to everyone.”

The new Sydney Fish Market is on a 3.6-hectare site at the head of Blackwattle Bay. The design capitalises on the opportunity to link the bay with the significant green space of Wentworth Park to the south, and the entire Sydney community. UrbanGrowth NSW Development Corporation, the NSW Government agency responsible for bringing together economic, social and environmental benefits to create extraordinary places, has been working with 3XN since 2017 on meeting the brief to produce an iconic fish market design for Sydney. “This will provide a new architectural focus for Blackwattle Bay and kick start the long-awaited revitalisation of The Bays Growth Centre on Sydney Harbour,” UrbanGrowth NSW CEO Barry Mann said.
INSITE - Summer/Autumn 2019
In designing this project, 3XN was inspired by the traditional market archetype, which appears throughout history and across cultures. The market is the social hub of cities around the world; it is generally comprised of a series of stalls that are open to the air but covered by a canopy and located in a large plaza. Preserving the authentic market feel is a key objective of this new building. The design focuses on maintaining a human scale with a true market atmosphere. According to Nielsen, the traditional market “is the social hub of cities around the world and we want this one to be as important an icon for Sydney.” The new fish market preserves the intimacy and flexibility of open-air stalls united under a single sweeping canopy that characterises its iconic form. As both a working market and a significant community and visitor destination, 3XN’s design resolves the problem posed 33
by integrating public accessibility with an operating harbour and wholesale market. In other cities around the world, wholesale fish markets are closed to the public because of the risks posed by industrial machinery and processes. Maintaining the visual connection between the public areas and wholesale or wharf operations was a key strategy posed by 3XN. In the new building, the ground floor hosts all the functions traditionally associated with fish markets – the landing and loading of fish, the wholesale market, and the auction hall. All while amphitheatre staircases and the foreshore promenade wrap over the operational wharf, offering interwoven visual connections so visitors can understand what is going on inside, while still keeping them safe and separate. The amphitheatre staircases that lead from the plazas to the public market are a continuation of the surrounding landscape, establishing a foreshore promenade around Blackwattle Bay and opening a new public route along the water’s edge that connects the local neighbourhood to the CBD and Woolloomooloo beyond. The stairs also double as places to sit and enjoy the surroundings. So rather than serving only a functional purpose, the stairs are converted into public spaces where people can enjoy their food and the view over the bay to the Anzac Bridge. The plazas at each ends of the fish market allow for informal gatherings and contemplative recreation – to create more connections between the public and the water - and house wetland flora to filter both storm water and grey water from the building. These bio-filtration systems filter water and can provide a protective habitat for local birds while filtering the immediate site water run-off. According to Nielsen, “Environmental and social sustainability are essential and inseparable parts of the design. The roof, landscaped forms, open atmosphere, plantings and materials that characterise the experience of the design are examples of this union. Throughout the course of the new Market’s concept and design development; public amenity and environmental sustainability have formed the core of our decision-making processes.” The goals for the design include a significant reduction in energy and water consumption and waste when compared to the existing fish market. The building’s roof is an integral aspect of the fish market’s iconic design but also its overall sustainability strategy. Shaped to respond to the spatial demands of the program below, it also harvests rainwater for reuse, protects the retail spaces from the sun, and filters daylight for operations below. The unique form uses prevailing winds to extract hot air and protects the sellers from southerly winds. The canopy, made from timber and aluminium is designed to be as permeable as possible, minimising the need for conditioned air, while also deflecting the direct sun. The new fish market maximises its water recycling potential by a combination of rainwater harvesting and grey water

recycling, bio-filtration, and mechanical filtration and sterilisation for the use in daily operations like wash-down. Biological and mechanical water quality systems are an integral part of the design of the new fish market, focused on conserving the valuable resource. The waste systems employed in the new fish market aim to recycle industrial food waste. A comprehensive strategy for recyclables will be instituted and managed to optimise consumables and the fish market will reprocess materials used in packaging and operations. The new building will break ground in mid-2019 and is expected to open in 2023, subject to all necessary approvals.

The Sydney Fish Market will establish a world-class “foodie” destination. The project seeks to set in place an exemplary example of integrating the public realm and contemporary market space that will become a landmark in Sydney’s unique harbour-based urban landscape. The new market will place people at the centre of the architectural response, with an emphasis on place-making to foster a strong sense of community at Blackwattle Bay.
