SURVEY REVEALS BUSINESS PROCESS INVESTMENT VITAL

archi-tech services newsletter

NEW THIS ISSUE

HYDRONIC HEATING Findings from A2K Technologies’ recent CAD/BIM Market Survey reveal that investment in mature business processes is vital to maintain efficiency and remain competitive.

A2K offers intelligent 3D tools and workflows for architecture, with expertise in software suites created specifically for building and infrastructure design.

A2K Technologies employs 35 technical consultants with an average of over 15 years’ realworld industry experience, and expertise across 63 design technology products.

Respondents said the top three technologies organisations were lacking were 3D printing and visualisation capacity, hardware and BIM.

The company conducted the CAD/BIM Market Survey to provide peer-driven statistics and data to leaders within the architecture, engineering, construction, infrastructure, manufacturing and government sectors. Based on an online survey of 300 professionals throughout Australia and New Zealand, the Key Findings Report provided insights into the current state of technology, innovation, business challenges and pain points in the CAD/BIM (Building Information Modelling) space. Among the findings, 85 per cent of respondents said adopting new technology is either extremely or moderately important, while 92 per cent said they already experiment with new technologies or they would like to.

However, when considering concerns with current technology, training topped the list, with 27 per cent of those surveyed citing it as their biggest pain point. This was unsurprising, considering that 48 per cent are self-taught or rely on peers for training. The adoption of new technology stood out as an important factor for businesses to remain competitive, particularly as the market increasingly expects high quality renders, performance analysis and BIM processes to enforce standards at each stage of design, so that the final stage requires less effort.

WINNER B.E.ARCHITECTURE ENTRY FIREPLACE WINTER STREET CONCEPT SKETCHES

WORKING DRAWINGS

RENDERED DRAWINGS

archi-tech services newsletter

THE BRIEF Winter St is a balance of new and old, combining a historic Victorian house with a modern extension to create a home for a young family. The house has two fireplaces, a formal one in at the front of the original house and a modern one at the rear. Both are functional to provide heat for the family as well as to add visual interest, each with a clear form appropriate to the architectural language of its surroundings. The one in the contemporary addition is cleanly integrated into the wall with thin, modern detailing. The one in the front existing Victorian section is more formal to create a bespoke environment with fine detailing. With a reductive approach, the formal fireplace has consolidated the proportions of a traditional fireplace into a single curving gesture that maintains the essence of the buildings history. Both minimal and decorative, the fireplace gives a unique and highly crafted custom element to the home. Hand fabricated from plate steel, the fireplace is built from the same material as the modern fireplace in the extension for continuity throughout the house and is referential of the older style cast iron fireplaces and scrollwork. The thin dark fireplace stands out from the white walls with grand coved cornices for a high impact living space that is strong yet quiet. Achieving the delicate look of the fireplace required the team to push the limits of the material and the fireplace requirements. We worked closely with the fabricator to determine the best way to get a smooth continuous fireplace from one piece of material. The entire piece of steel is mounted to the wall to express the gesture and required a very accurate construction methodology. To keep the structure minimal, the fresh air ventilation is integrated into the hydronic heating trenches in the floor. The uncomplicated outcome is the result of a highly collaborative process to condense the complex technical requirements into a refine appearance. page 5

SECOND PLACE +PLUS ARCHITECTURE ENTRY FIREPLACE WRAP APARTMENTS THE BRIEF This project involved the design of a pair of custom fireplaces to fit within a new mixed use residential tower. The inclusion of a fireplace within both the lobby and cafĂŠ was to create a more welcoming and homely environment for residents, guests and cafĂŠ patrons. The proposal is for a decorative fireplace that has the impression of a natural open fire.

CONCEPT SKETCHES

Both fireplaces are clad in a matte black steel shroud appearing to hover above a recycled red brick hearth below. The suspended substantial steel structure seems weightless and the concealed services give the impression of a natural open fireplace. One fireplace leans back with a subtle kink to fit neatly within the constrained cavity between the brick arch above. While the other fireplace has facet to the side creating an asymmetric yet proportionally balanced form.

WORKING DRAWINGS

The Real Flame Power Flue technology allows the fireplace to overcome the challenge of having apartments above and the ability to vent exhaust through boundary walls. The finish on the steel shroud is matte black and the steel angles were manufactured and designed by Steelworks.

The project team consisted of:

THIRD PLACE BOWER ARCHITECTURE ENTRY FIREPLACE STEPPING HOUSE CONCEPT SKETCHES

THE BRIEF This is a fireplace for a large single residential project in Melbourne, Victoria. The clients required a seamless feature fireplace which would act as both a focus and central dividing element between dining and living spaces. The concept utilised the natural fall of the site to create a level difference between these living spaces. A textured and restrained palette of floating brickwork, textured tiles, timber, bluestone and marble was in turn explored to compose the living space around the central fireplace.

WORKING DRAWINGS

This central fireplace element divides the living areas, preventing an excessively vast feel. Openness and transparency through this element is balanced by the weight of the cantilevered masonry and varied texture of the materials palette. Research for the fireplace during the design process involved liaison and advice from Real Flame and the structural engineer as well as with various other trades, consultants and authorities both before and during construction.

TOSO SPREADS WORD ON ROLLER SYSTEM’S MERITS TOSO Australia is a Joint Venture Company with

Japan’s leading manufacturer of window furnishings TOSO Company, Limited who have over 60 years’ experience and are ISO 9001 and 14001 Certified The Mytec roller blind has been tested for 10,000 up and down movements to meet its minimum acceptable quality level, with a 5 year warranty on all componentry for its single, dual or linked systems and is considered the best roller blind system in the market. When choosing a roller blind, the mechanism should be as carefully considered as the fabric choice. This is often forgotten, as the focus quickly moves to colour and type of fabric, with the assumption that all roller blinds are the same, and they go up and down in the same way.

Where the TOSO system is different from standard blinds in the market is:

SMOOTHNESS in operation

With its fast gearing and lightness in operation, it is very smooth to operate without the jerking affect that can occur with other blinds. The profile is also extruded in Australia so as to ensure consistent quality, as product from overseas varies in quality from shipment to shipment, with the 42mm pipe (6060 T6) having a wall thickness of 1.5mm, and the 46mm pipe (6661 T6) with 3mm thickness which minimises the risk of deflection in larger sized blinds.

GEARING

Most blinds, you pull the chain a metre, and it rises or lowers by a metre or less. With the TOSO system, you pull the chain a metre, and it rises or lowers by 1.7 metres, so 70% or more faster than the operation of a standard blind, so the advantage with that is you can raise or lower the blind with less pulls of the chain. The other benefit, is that in some circumstances it is impractical (no mullions) or ascetically not pleasing to the eye to have a safety restraint installed, but if you have the chain ending 1.6 metres above the floor, you do not need to have a safety restraint installed, and because of its gearing it is not as hard to raise or lower the blind, but with a 1 to 1 operation, this would be more difficult.

The TOSO Mytec roller blind is ideal for both Commercial, Residential and Aged Care applications, especially when high quality finishes are being applied to the project, and a superior system is desired.

LIGHTNESS in operation

Every Mytec blind comes with a spring, with 8 different sizes depending on the size of the blind. With a standard blind, they normally only have a spring assist for larger sizes, and without that spring assist you have to apply more force to raise or lower the blind, and even when the blind comes with a spring assist it is still heavier to operate than the Mytec system.

for more information contact: Malcolm Young Phone: (02) 9986 1400 Email: info@tosoaustralia.com.au Website: www.tosoaustralia.com.au

Also, it is that light, as was designed for a Japanese woman to operate, you literally could use your finger tips to pull the blind up and down, rather than having to grip the chain in your hand. The same even applies with a linked blind which can go to 5 metres in width, and because of the larger spring, it is still light to operate. The springs can also be tensioned, so that either pulling up or lowering can even be lighter, though it will be heavier on the reverse way. This makes it ideal for older people who are frail or have arthritis. archi-tech services newsletter

BICYCLE PARKING.... Leda Consulting Services

Leda is assisting architects across Australia with free design support with “End of Journey Facilities” for cyclists. With over 20 years industry experience our design engineers have a wealth of experience to assist architects by providing various options to best utilise the areas allocated for bicycle storage. In utilising the space reserved for bicycle parking Leda can assist with providing suitable options relating to: • • • •

Bicycle rack options Compound or cage perimeter Access control and pedestrian gates Ancillary equipment such as “bike repair stations” • Clothes lockers and storage Experience has shown that a combination of horizontal and vertical parking for bikes will achieve the best result. Leda staff can also provide budgetary costings and of course our experienced installation staff can project manage and install the facility if required

Fast Food Outlets Catering for Cyclists Provision for cyclists at fast food outlets across Australia has been growing momentum for some time. While the majority of patrons still arrive at these types of premises (by motor vehicle) it is encouraging to see many chains catering for cyclists with the installation of bike racks. In this instance at a Perth McDonalds a Leda CBR6 (catering for six bicycles) has thoughtfully been installed adjacent the entrance where the bikes are highly visible and less likely to be tampered with or stolen. page 10

summer 2015, issue #5

Space Saving Double Story Bike Racks As Australia follows trends to design and install larger bicycle parking facilities to cater for the growing number of cyclists riding, the space requirements for parking the bicycles can become a major factor. Leda have pioneered the development of double story bike racks in Australia and offer a number of various models and options. These include “manually operated”, through to gas strut power assist models. As with all our “Securabike” products Leda provides full installation services by experienced Leda staff and ongoing “Securacare” PMC programs to maintain and service these products.

The Block

Anyone who recently watched the latest TV series of “The Block” on channel 9 would be familiar with the conversion of this Melbourne warehouse in Prahran. “The Block Glasshouse” by reports was a very successful series. When it came to installing bicycle parking for the building the obvious choice was Leda “Securabike” bike rails. In this instance our SBR00B stainless rails were selected and installed to compliment the project.

BALL BEARING DOOR TRACKS Engineered & Manufactured in Australia since 1880

Charles Marshall P/L is a family run business based in Richmond, Victoria, Australia. Our flagship product is an extensive range of FITZROY Ball Bearing Sliding Track systems.

COMPANY HISTORY

Charles Marshall established his engineering business in Fitzroy, Victoria in 1880. Over one hundred and thirty years on, the company has grown, prospered and is still owned and run by the Marshall family. This unique patented system covers a vast range of applications from light-weight kitchen drawers up to giant one tonne door installations and beyond. Developed in 1932, the unique FITZROY system provides a reliable and simple solution to the challenge of finding a durable sliding door track. A FITZROY system was fitted to the bronze doors in 1932 at the Shrine of Rememberance in Melbourne. Today, that same system shows negligible wear and is still operating with effortless ease. Since 1932 FITZROY has been opening doors on some of the most prestigious architectural projects around Australia.

UNIVERSITY TESTED

The University of Melbourne Engineering Department tested a typical section of FITZROY track. The track was subjected to 258 hours of non-stop opening and closing operation. This means that the test door opened and closed fully 130,000 times, travelling approximately 160 kilometres. PRECISION MEASUREMENT RESULTS WERE IMPRESSIVE. Cage Wear - No evidence of wear on either surface Ball Wear - Precision measuring found no evidence of ball wear. Track Wear - 0.0005", So minute as to be regarded as negligible. CONCLUSION From these exhaustive tests, the wear rate calculated was so low it was not possible to estimate the life of the track.

Although FITZROY boasts installation in such projects as the Melbourne Casino, Parliament House in Canberra and the Sydney Opera House- there are thousands of smaller, but equally spectacular buildings around Australia that have chosen FITZROY. Used universally in the construction industry you will find FITZROY in such places as: • • • • • • • • • •
