2015 WINNER ANDREW DONALDSON ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN BONDI RESIDENCE
The family of 4 client brief for the Bondi Residence was to fuse the clean design aesthetics of Palm Springs modernism with an architecture responsive to climate and context that allows for the messiness of family life - “Hollywood on Holiday. A key aspect of architecture of this period was the hearth, literally the heart of the home, and a strong vertical grounding spatial element to offset the floating roof-planes that maximise the ideal northern aspect. Our design solution nods to the Palm Springs architecture aspired by the clients whilst critiquing such diagrams and flexing to be more inclusive of local environment. This led to a challenging fireplace positioning, as the slipping floor-planes and connection desired meant that the ideal solution was a central, 3-sided fireplace to link to the diagonal spatial layout, viewable from all living spaces, and eaten out of the primary structural element in the house. The Real Flame Pure Vision 850 was the stand-out starting point,. The most aesthetic and minimal, many components allowed us to build it in, recess out of view, and achieve openness. We have customised the product in collaboration with the team, our structural engineer and contractor to achieve this innovative, customised application - our projects heart, and central feature.

| THE CORE
The concept for our fireplace began with the desire to create something that was greater than just a heating or decorative element. We designed a fireplace that becomes truly the hearth of a home. Sitting in the middle of the open plan apartment, the fireplace structures the room. It begins to define rooms with its solid intensity. The couples day to day programs are placed around this core. Whether its the freshly bought flowers on the mantle, working at the study desk or helping to prepare dinner, the fireplace becomes an integral part of their lives. The grate surrounding the fireplace, taking its inspiration from the heat sink, allows the installation to still serve its purpose even with the fire off. The fire, glimpsed at from all angles of the room centres this couple and allows a fireplace to play prominent part in their day to day life. CONCEPT SKETCHES

New Lamborghini Building
Sant’Agata Bolognese - Italy THE PROJECT
The building made for Lamborghini, in which prototypes and pre -series cars are designed, had to be able to represent the company as such, and the goal that the automaker of Sant ’Agata Bolognese had set: Style and Protection of environment and territor y. To do this Prospazio created a Class A building with straight lines, highlighted by the use of corporate colours in opposition to one another, “absolute white and black ”, and reiterated on several innovative buffering materials. Coatings and claddings have played a vital role in achieving the maximum energy class. The use of the system arcoPlus® Double Connector has made it possible to considerably decrease the heat loss of the transparent facades. Consider that, while a strong high-per formance infix is able to reach a thermal transmittance equal to 1.2 W/m2K, the polycarbonate double -room used in there reaches a value equivalent to 0.62 W/m2K.
ENERGY CONTAINMENT
In the conversation with the engineer Luca Bernardoni of Prospazio, it emerges how Lazzaro Srl has been able to offer the innovative solution of Dott.Gallina for the realization of large transparent facades of the building, to ensure adequate natural lighting, the confidentiality typical of a prototype depar tment and a high solar control. How impor tant was the facade of the building in the complex energy calculation and what were the values of thermal resistance required? For a building so large the facade plays an impor tant role. The more a building is small and compact, the less heat loss and the easier it is to achieve the maximum energy class. The PSC-Protoshop presents itself as a simple volume, regular and compact, the shape of which seeks to limit energy losses, but being constituted by wide transparent facades, for the fixtures it required a rather low thermal transmittance value: ≤0.83W/ m2K. This has been made possible thanks to the use of the product arcoPlus® Double Connector in triple -layer polycarbonate assembled with a unique connector. On the sides most exposed to sunlight the product arcoPlus® Double Connector was manufactured with a unique IR filter which can restrict the passage of infrared radiation that causes internal heating of the workplace. This system has allowed us to ensure a high energy per formance and reduce the thermal conduction between the outside and the All products in polycarbonate by dott.gallina are UV protected and block out the harmful ultraviolet inside of the building eliminating radiation. The Policarb®IR sheets and modular arcoPlus®IR panels transmit a higher quality of light, thermal bridges. and transmit less infra-red energy to the inside. 10
Archi-Tech Services Pty Ltd
What has determined the choice of the product arcoPlus® Double Connector from the different materials evaluated? The choice of arcoPlus® Double Connector is definitely due to the excellent energy per formance unmatched by any other arrangement of the cur tain wall. In addition to this, making polycarbonate the winning material, was the need for good lighting of the interior and at the same time maintenance of the confidentiality needed for a prototype depar tment as that housed in the building. The aesthetic and chromatic solution underlines the elegance and simplicity of forms at the same time: Lamborghini refuses any colour accepting only white, black and grey scale. The temperature inside is extremely lower... and the panel with IR filter allows you to watch the light source... as looking at the light with sunglasses... Have you had problems finding materials that fulfil these chromatic requirements? ArcoPlus® 626, with its neutral or white opal colour, was in accordance with company ’s policies and there fore per fect for the building in question. Most impor tant was the advice of Dott.Gallina by proposing for the most sun-exposed façades (east and south) a special product with filters capable of controlling solar radiation and preventing a greenhouse effect inside the premises. The function of the IR treatment is to absorb the infrared component of solar radiation (780 to 1400nm), blocking solar radiation responsible for the greenhouse effect, while permitting the passage of the visible component. Now that the PSC-Protoshop is completed what are your sensations perceived inside the building? The temperature inside is extremely lower than the outside temperature, and it is easily perceptible, by anyone, through the simple touch of the sheet.
INSITE - Spring 2015
Another impor tant demonstration of the per formance of arcoPlus® Double Connector I could find by looking at the sun through the two different sheets: while the transparent one produces glare, the one with the filter allows you to watch the light source for a long time without any kind of discomfor t, a little like watching light first without sunglasses, and then with. Let There Be Light When architect Wayne Kr ygsman was renovating his home in Willoughby on Sydney ’s lower nor th shore, he knew he was going to need some light in the new, open-plan ground floor kitchen/living area.
generates. The light quality is bright and realistic. It dims with dusk or in overcast conditions and there are no running costs or maintenance required once installed.
“ There was insufficient natural light in the space, par ticularly in the morning,” he said. “It ’s all one big room and I didn’t want to turn lights on in the morning to illuminate the kitchen bench spaces.
“In addition, it totally complements our décor. We have white ceilings with white trims and white stone benches so it fits in per fectly with our interior design.”
“ Traditional skylight systems were not out of the question but would have been expensive because of our second floor and would have restricted our options on light source location. When Wayne attended an industr y product showcase and saw the world’s first shaftless solar skylight system, illume. He knew straight away that it perfectly suited his needs. “ What I really liked about the illume system is that it gave us so much more flexibility than other solutions,” Wayne said. “It allowed us to position the light source exactly where we wanted.” Wayne installed a single, 1200 x 300mm rectangular illume PREMIUM™ diffuser panel which is connected via hidden cable to a standard 600 x 600 roof-fitted solar collector.
“I would absolutely recommend this product over traditional skylights or other light sources. People are all looking for more sustainable, naturally-lit, energy efficient housing and this product fits that bill ver y well. I am really happy with the product.” Contact name: Phone: Email: Web:

Preventing Effloresence I am quite sure that you have all seen efflorescence (salt) exuding from building structures in the past. The containment is crucial.
Evo is not a silane, silane derivative or acrylic base composition like those of the past.
This is attributed to an uneducated building practice in relation to waterproofing. Efflorescence is generally a white crystalline substance which has not been activated for various reasons during the initial hydration process (free lime content) that can also turn into a solid carbonation deposit.
Use with most porous masonry elements. • Concrete • Tile screeds • Tiles and grouting • Pavers • Brickwork • Concrete Block • Application under paint coatings
This free lime is carried to the surface either by continuous water flowing through the structure or through the process of evaporation. Not only is this an aesthetic issue, but can nearly always be related to the decomposition and erosion of structural elements.
Consider specifying Evo to your next project as prevention rather than an expensive remedial.
By minimizing the entry points of water ingress at construction time, in turn will inhibit the movement of efflorescence to the structures surface and will consolidate where it should be initially.

Château Margaux Bordeaux, France, 2009–2015
Château Margaux is a Premier Cru and one of the world’s leading wine producers. Since it was built in the early 19th centur y, the Bordeaux estate has evolved to meet changing operational requirements, but no longer has the capacity to adapt to meet future needs. Following a 2009 study, Foster + Par tners were appointed to design the first new construction on the site for 200 years, providing the estate with the flexibility and new facilities that will suppor t its continued quest for excellence. To address the dual challenge of meeting exacting technical requirements, and integrating with the existing collection of buildings, the approach has been holistic. The original estate was planned as an entire farming village, with the chateau surrounded by all of the industrial facilities needed for wine -making. The design re tains this connection between process and architecture. A new building for the production of primarily white wine extends INSITE - Spring 2015
from the eastern wing of the existing winer y complex, balancing the overall composition. Its highly flexible, open enclosure is shaped by the different wine -making processes and includes a new research and development centre. In its simplicity, the new building reinterprets the form of the existing industrial facilities and comprises a pitched roof at the same level, suppor ted by tree -shaped load bearing columns and punctuated by light wells. In addition to new construction, the ensemble of buildings will be restored to their original design intent and the existing winer y will be connected to a new underground vinothèque. Located away from the flooding area, this will provide safe, environmentally stable underground storage at the hear t of the estate. This new facility is linked with the current refector y, which will be refurbished to form a new visitors’ centre, welcoming guests as the star t and end point for tours of the estate. The historic Orangerie, the oldest structure on the estate, will also be refurbished. 19

Waterproof Solution for Under Your Deck Underdeck solves the age old problem for those who have wanted to utilize under the deck space and keep it dry in the wet, and expand the outdoor living space. The owners of this newly built Glenbrook, NSW home were told that it was impossible to waterproof the underside of their deck, or cover the concrete slab of the floor above, or the galvanised steel frame of the deck. That is, not until they were made aware of Underdeck. The team at Underdeck quickly put together a proposal to solve their problem. Underdeck is: ●● Made in Australia ●● Easy to install ●● Limited Lifetime warranty (salt spray excluded) ●● All components are maintenance free – will not Rust, Rot or Corrode. ●● Made from recycled metal ●● Available in all Colorbond colors, & now woodgrain finishes ●● Versatile product which works with either existing or new decks. ●● Increases useable area for entertainment or storage, without weather worries. ●● Adds value, beauty and is functional.
Before
After
“The work by Adrian Hunter and his team at underdeck.com.au aimed to finish a difficult part of our new house build. Our original plans had no lower deck so no provision was made for waterproofing this large area in the original upper deck design. We had been told it was “impossible to retrofit a waterproofing solution”. We were thrilled when Adrian and his team’s assessment visit culminated in a definitive solution. It exceeded our expectations in terms of cost and the speed with which they could complete the work. What we appreciated most about working with the Underdeck Team was their punctuality, attention to detail and tidiness. The job was completed on budget, on time and performs as promised. The appearance has improved dramatically & now we finally have a larger, waterproofed lower deck area to enjoy. I can recommend the Underdeck system unreservedly.” -- With sincerest thanks, Kent & Liz, Glenbrook NSW for more information contact: Adrian Hunter Phone: 0417 591 113 Email: huntersales@netspace.net.au Website: www.underdeck.com.au 22

Por tsea, Victoria Por tsea Victoria - The owners of this Por tsea home were looking for a way to enclose there outdoor entertainment area. Needing to replace their current weather damaged outdoor furniture, the owners wanted to find a solution to enclose this area to protect it from the weather, with one massive consideration – the view! The owners were adamant that they did not want to compromise their view of the golf course or hinder the natural light into their home. Their search for the per fect solution lead them to CLEAR EDGE GLASS SYSTEMS. A new Australian made clear edged glass sliding and stacking system. Designed by Archie Shaw, with 15 years of experience in the European fenestration industr y, re alising that Australia needs a clear edged system which meets the standards and the demands of the Australian market. The Trip-Free™ floor track gives seamless flow from the outside to the inside and the ability to completely reopen the space – give the home owners options in changing weather conditions. BALL BEARING DOOR TRACKS Engineered & Manufactured in Australia since 1880
Charles Marshall P/L is a family run business based in Richmond, Victoria, Australia. Our flagship product is an extensive range of FITZROY Ball Bearing Sliding Track systems.
COMPANY HISTORY
Charles Marshall established his engineering business in Fitzroy, Victoria in 1880. Over one hundred and thirty years on, the company has grown, prospered and is still owned and run by the Marshall family. This unique patented system covers a vast range of applications from light-weight kitchen drawers up to giant one tonne door installations and beyond. Developed in 1932, the unique FITZROY system provides a reliable and simple solution to the challenge of finding a durable sliding door track. A FITZROY system was fitted to the bronze doors in 1932 at the Shrine of Rememberance in Melbourne. Today, that same system shows negligible wear and is still operating with effortless ease. Since 1932 FITZROY has been opening doors on some of the most prestigious architectural projects around Australia.
UNIVERSITY TESTED
The University of Melbourne Engineering Department tested a typical section of FITZROY track. The track was subjected to 258 hours of non-stop opening and closing operation. This means that the test door opened and closed fully 130,000 times, travelling approximately 160 kilometres.
PRECISION MEASUREMENT RESULTS WERE IMPRESSIVE. Cage Wear - No evidence of wear on either surface Ball Wear - Precision measuring found no evidence of ball wear. Track Wear - 0.0005", So minute as to be regarded as negligible.
CONCLUSION
From these exhaustive tests, the wear rate calculated was so low it was not possible to estimate the life of the track.
Although FITZROY boasts installation in such projects as the Melbourne Casino, Parliament House in Canberra and the Sydney Opera House - there are thousands of smaller, but equally spectacular buildings around Australia that have chosen FITZROY. Used universally in the construction industry you will find FITZROY in such places as: • • • • • • • • • •
