Building the Dream on Hamilton Island with interiors by In Design International

Archi-Tech Services Pty Ltd

IN DESIGN INTERNATIONAL was approached by Sprout Architects requesting interior assistance on a new build home they were designing for Hamilton Island. The location itself was enough to entice IN DESIGN INTERNATIONAL to be involved as the interior consultant… However, upon sighting the preliminary plans that Sprout had created with its’ spectacular entry foyer overlooking a canter levered pool; there was the added bonus of knowing that this property was going to be something absolutely extraordinary once handed over! “We collaborated with the architect on almost every aspect of the building inside and out! “We have found the best design results come from working alongside like-minded visionaries! It was an pleasure to work with Sprout’s dream!” says IDI director Penny del Castillo The brief was produce a comfortable holiday home for the clients’ extended family when they came to visit the sailing mecca paradise! From the front fence and arrival reflection ponds to the steep back garden boardwalk, pools, lighting, electrical, joinery and all things in between In Design International were involved! “Our services extend well beyond spatial planning, schedules of finishes and documentation” boasts Penny. Once all architectural works and interior documentation were underway, In Design International independently set about making the selections for furnishings, window treatments and decoration. Then followed through with the precision project management of supplying and installing the entire homes contents in just a few days! Penny admits “Working on an island has its logistical challenges! But the rewards are well worth the effort!” IN Design International has also accomplished projects in New Zealand… (a slightly larger island)... Bali mainland and Lembongan Island. “So we have had some practice!” laughs Penny!

SILENT SPEED Smith & Co luxurious

residential apartments Premier Door Systems installed EFAFLEX HIGH SPEED DOORS for the Smith & Co luxurious residential apartments and fine retail development in Collingwood, Melbourne. EFAFLEX high-speed doors are safe, open and close quickly, ultra secure with low noise and vibration levels, creating an ideal environment for apartments directly above the doors. “On the Smith & Co developments we installed a range of EFAFLEX Type S Series high speed security doors with various installation configurations in the basement car park, loading bay and supermarket loading bay,” said Premier’s Andrew Bykersma. “Key to the project was the installation of the specialised LowLintel clearance high speed doors that can be installed with minimal head clearance — as low as 250mm — making them ideal for maximising space and also for retrofit to existing applications were space in limited.” “Even despite an already low Db operating level rating, Premier worked extensively with SLR Consulting acoustic engineers to ensure those levels were reduced further. Then we fitted Australian designed and manufactured acoustic mounting systems to the door frames and fixtures, effectively isolating the doors from the actual building itself with great success,” enthused Andrew. “The doors come in a variety of configurations and on this project we’ve provided both clear vision sections for 10

safe two-way vision, while others have ventilation to provide airflow.” Premier Door Systems EFAFLEX doors provide sole access and security to key areas of the Smith & Co development. The high levels of traffic to the major supermarket, apartments and designer shops with no on-street parking means that the five car park doors will exceed 100, 000 cycles per annum.

COMPLIANCE isn’t rocket SCIENCE.

It’s ENGINEERING!

Quality ISO 9001

It doesn’t take a genius to use compliant, Engineered Building Products (EBPs) – at the end of the day it’s really common sense. Non-compliant building products can compromise the structural integrity of a building. However builders and certifiers alike can trust each and every one of MiTek’s EBPs. MiTek have a huge range of ‘compliant’ EBPs designed to meet specific loadbearing and engineering requirements. They all comply with the National Construction Code Series and Australian Standards. All are tested and certified to ensure peace-of-mind and performance. Plus, MiTek provides data sheets for each and every EBP and support media via the MiTek GUIDE and the EasyCat App.

APPLE UNION SQUARE REVEALED

San Francisco, California 2016

The opening of Apple Union Square in San Francisco marks an important step in Apple’s continuous evolution, its purpose and its role in the local community to bring a richer experience beyond opportunistic retail. Its innovative design enables new levels of transparency, openness and civic generosity, incorporating Apple’s new features and services. Apple Union Square will be a model for future projects worldwide. The design is the result of a close collaboration between Apple’s teams led by Jonathan Ive, hief design officer and Angela Ahrendts, senior vice president of Retail and Online Stores and Foster + Partners.

As a foil to the lively activities of Union Square, the new art-filled plaza, featuring public Wi-Fi, is imagined as a tranquil garden of contemplation with tables and seating, creating a beautiful gathering place for the community. The Ruth Asawa fountain, an important heritage feature in San Francisco, has been given a new setting on the steps leading down to Stockton Street. A canopy of shading trees and a 65 foot (19.8 meters) by 50 foot (15.2 meters) ‘green wall’ planted with Ficus Repens (Creeping Fig) plants, bisected by a sheer waterfall at the western end of the plaza, creates a contrasting backdrop to the fountain.

“This is an incredible site on Union Square and a chance to create a new public plaza. We havecreated the most inspiring and stimulating space imaginable, blurring the inside and outside”, said Stefan Behling, Architect, Foster + Partners. “It is possible to experience Apple’s extraordinary products and services while taking in the Taking advantage of San Francisco’s moderate climate, buzzing Union Square on one side and relaxing in the 22

ABSORBING NOISE FROM HARD SURFACES With Architects and Designers opting for hard floor and wall surfaces, such as tiles, timber, plasterboard, & brick, it ‘s up to the ceiling to do all the work of absorbing noise. This is where Ren-Acoustic Supreme ceiling tiles are in a league of their own. With a Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) rating of 0.90, meaning that on average 90% of noise at the octave band centre frequencies of 250, 500, 1000 and 2000 are absorbed when it hits the Ren-Acoustic Supreme surface (when Tested to ASTM C423-90A). Other features of Ren-Acoustic Supreme include: ●● Light weight - approx. 2.1 kg/m2 when 20 mm thick ●● BCA (Building Code of Australia) Fire Test Group 1 classification according to Specification A2.4 ●● Available in Black or White with matching T-bar grid ●● Available in custom made colours from RAL colour chart ●● Available in a range of sizes, thicknesses and edge type ●● Good thermal properties - R 0.63 with 20 mm thickness ●● Excellent moisture/sag resistance rating of RH (Relative Humidity) 95% All of the above features make Ren-Acoustic Supreme ideal for a wide range of projects such as offices, call centres, schools, libraries, theatres, cafés and restaurants etc. Wherever there’s a need for noise reduction Ren-Acoustic Supreme is the ideal solution. BALL BEARING DOOR TRACKS Engineered & Manufactured in Australia since 1880

Charles Marshall P/L is a family run business based in Richmond, Victoria, Australia. Our flagship product is an extensive range of FITZROY Ball Bearing Sliding Track systems.

COMPANY HISTORY

Charles Marshall established his engineering business in Fitzroy, Victoria in 1880. Over one hundred and thirty years on, the company has grown, prospered and is still owned and run by the Marshall family. This unique patented system covers a vast range of applications from light-weight kitchen drawers up to giant one tonne door installations and beyond. Developed in 1932, the unique FITZROY system provides a reliable and simple solution to the challenge of finding a durable sliding door track. A FITZROY system was fitted to the bronze doors in 1932 at the Shrine of Rememberance in Melbourne. Today, that same system shows negligible wear and is still operating with effortless ease. Since 1932 FITZROY has been opening doors on some of the most prestigious architectural projects around Australia.

UNIVERSITY TESTED

The University of Melbourne Engineering Department tested a typical section of FITZROY track. The track was subjected to 258 hours of non-stop opening and closing operation. This means that the test door opened and closed fully 130,000 times, travelling approximately 160 kilometres.

PRECISION MEASUREMENT RESULTS WERE IMPRESSIVE. Cage Wear - No evidence of wear on either surface Ball Wear - Precision measuring found no evidence of ball wear. Track Wear - 0.0005", So minute as to be regarded as negligible.

CONCLUSION

From these exhaustive tests, the wear rate calculated was so low it was not possible to estimate the life of the track.

Although FITZROY boasts installation in such projects as the Melbourne Casino, Parliament House in Canberra and the Sydney Opera House - there are thousands of smaller, but equally spectacular buildings around Australia that have chosen FITZROY. Used universally in the construction industry you will find FITZROY in such places as: • • • • • • • • • •

Hospitals, schools, prisons Police stations, sports stadiums Off-shore drilling rigs Power stations, fire stations Swimming pool enclosures Residential housing Commercial premises, hotels Factories, banks Locomotives and rail carriages Horse stables
