Raising the game in paving & timber decks Elmich Australia introduces a product range that will appeal to Specifiers designing raised floors on balconies, terraces, green roofs, podiums and pool surrounds. The next time you are specifying paving or decking over a waterproof membrane, consider the Elmich range of free standing pedestals. VersiPave and VersiJack support both paving and timber decking, but unlike traditional methods, omit the requirement for glue or mechanical fixings, so the waterproof membrane remains accessible and intact. “impossible to retrofit a waterproofing solution”

Underdeck solves the age old problem for those who have wanted to utilize under the deck space and keep it dry in the wet, and expand the outdoor living space. The owners of this newly built Glenbrook, NSW home were told that it was impossible to waterproof the underside of their deck, or cover the concrete slab of the floor above, or the galvanised steel frame of the deck. That is, not until they were made aware of Underdeck. The team at Underdeck quickly put together a proposal to solve their problem.

Before

“The work by Adrian Hunter and his team at underdeck.com.au aimed to finish a difficult part of our new house build. Our original plans had no lower deck so no provision was made for waterproofing this large area in the original upper deck design. We had been told it was “impossible to retrofit a waterproofing solution”. We were thrilled when Adrian and his team’s assessment visit culminated in a definitive solution. It exceeded our expectations in terms of cost and the speed with which they could complete the work. What we appreciated most about working with the Underdeck Team was their punctuality, attention to detail and tidiness. The job was completed on budget, on time and performs as promised. The appearance has improved dramatically & now we finally have a larger, waterproofed lower deck area to enjoy. I can recommend the Underdeck system unreservedly.”

After

With sincerest thanks, Kent & Liz Glenbrook NSW

Launch of Crossrail Place Retail & Roof Garden, Canary Wharf, London This major new shopping development and roof garden above Canary Wharf Crossrail Station was opened to the public on, 1st May 2015, ahead of the station opening in 2018. Foster + Partners were commissioned to design a mixed-use scheme above and around the new Canary Wharf Crossrail Station. Crossrail is the largest infrastructure project in Europe and will connect London from east to west, with nine new stations and 42 kilometres of new tunnels under the city. Located in the waters of the north dock next to the HSBC tower and close to the residential neighbourhood of Poplar, the development’s new public spaces are conceived as an accessible, welcoming bridge between the two areas. The four levels of retail, roof garden, pavilions and station entrances are unified by a complex timber roof, which wraps around the building like a shell. The 310-metre-long roof arches 30 metres over the park and stretches around the shops and entrances below. The roof’s lattice opens in the centre to draw in light and rain for natural irrigation, and opens

along the sides and at either end to allow views of the water and surrounding streets. Providing a warm, natural counterpoint to the steel and glass towers of CanaryWharf, the wooden structure evokes the ships that once sailed into West India Dock. The spruce glulam beams are sustainably sourced and support ETFE cushions, which are filled with air and lighter than glass. Where cushions are removed, the timber is protected by aluminium flashing. Further developing an approach pioneered in the flowing glass roof the Great Court at the British Museum

and Smithsonian Institution Courtyard, the design of the lattice is a fusion of architecture, engineering and sophisticated three-dimensional modelling.

Remarkably, despite the smooth curve of the enclosure, there are only four curved timber beams in the whole structure. To seamlessly connect the straight beams, which rotate successively along the diagonals, the design team developed a system of steel nodes, which resolve the twist. winter 2015, issue #6

species that first entered Britain through the docks. When open at night, the building will glow, drawing visitors to use the public facilities and garden and creating a welcoming civic gateway to London’s growing commercial district.

Crossrail Section Cut Elevation

The visual simplicity of the smooth curving timber lattice belies the geometric complexity of the structure, which is made up of 1,418 beams and 564 nodes, 364 of which are unique. Foster + Partners’ specialist modelling group helped to develop an innovative system to enable the roof components to be rapidly fabricated and accurately assembled on site. At night the structure is illuminated, creating a welcoming civic gateway to London’s growing commercial district. The roof garden is accessible from ground level via two connecting bridges, and bounded at each end by pavilions. The ETFE cushions, which are a highly insulating material, help to create a unique microclimate for the garden below, allowing the garden to be planted with some of the

Crossrail Longitudinal Elevation

Lord Foster said: “Crossrail is an important investment in infrastructure that will have benefits not only in the short term, but also for future generations. The social magnets of shopping, bars, restaurant and a public garden are also part of an enlightened partnership between the public and private domains. The building is conceived to mediate between the adjoining worlds of Canary Wharf and the local community – with its different materials and the emphasis on a softer expression and warmer materials.” Ben Scott, Partner, Foster + Partners said: “The geometric timber lattice is designed to unify the three different functions of the building in a single architectural expression. The advantage of using timber was that it could be economically and efficiently machined to follow the complex geometry that evolved to meet the development parameters, creating a technically advanced enclosure.”

BALL BEARING DOOR TRACKS Engineered & Manufactured in Australia since 1880

Charles Marshall P/L is a family run business based in Richmond, Victoria, Australia. Our flagship product is an extensive range of FITZROY Ball Bearing Sliding Track systems.

COMPANY HISTORY

Charles Marshall established his engineering business in Fitzroy, Victoria in 1880. Over one hundred and thirty years on, the company has grown, prospered and is still owned and run by the Marshall family. This unique patented system covers a vast range of applications from light-weight kitchen drawers up to giant one tonne door installations and beyond. Developed in 1932, the unique FITZROY system provides a reliable and simple solution to the challenge of finding a durable sliding door track. A FITZROY system was fitted to the bronze doors in 1932 at the Shrine of Rememberance in Melbourne. Today, that same system shows negligible wear and is still operating with effortless ease. Since 1932 FITZROY has been opening doors on some of the most prestigious architectural projects around Australia.

UNIVERSITY TESTED

The University of Melbourne Engineering Department tested a typical section of FITZROY track. The track was subjected to 258 hours of non-stop opening and closing operation. This means that the test door opened and closed fully 130,000 times, travelling approximately 160 kilometres. PRECISION MEASUREMENT RESULTS WERE IMPRESSIVE. Cage Wear - No evidence of wear on either surface Ball Wear - Precision measuring found no evidence of ball wear. Track Wear - 0.0005", So minute as to be regarded as negligible. CONCLUSION From these exhaustive tests, the wear rate calculated was so low it was not possible to estimate the life of the track.

Although FITZROY boasts installation in such projects as the Melbourne Casino, Parliament House in Canberra and the Sydney Opera House- there are thousands of smaller, but equally spectacular buildings around Australia that have chosen FITZROY. Used universally in the construction industry you will find FITZROY in such places as: • • • • • • • • • •
