Aerial Apartments
Camberwell Junction, Melbourne
First of its kind...! In April 2008, Peter Badger from Wood Mash Architects and FKP Property Group approached Timber Engineered Structure (TES) for design advice on a Podium Screen for the first concept design of the Aerial Apartments – a landmark development located at Camberwell Junction in Melbourne. From these early discussions, a recommendation was made to use GL10 Australian White Cypress Durabeam fins fixed both sides to steel RSJ columns 10 metres long and tilted off the building creating a serpentine façade of the structure. The number of beams supplied was 336 find totaling 1700 metres of finished material. Section size supplied was 533x60 double coated with “Cutek CD%)” protective oil and a “Gold tone” UV stabalised colourtone pigment. Hasen Yuncken, the builders, coordinated the prefabrication and assembly of the fin structures with Timber Engineered Structures and GFC Industries. The application which involves the use of glulam Cypress for a multi storey commercial complex, is the first of its kind in Australia. The fins have created a spectacular use of sustainable Australian Durability 1, NFS accredited product and protected by the 30 year technology of “Cutek” being adopted to stabilize and protect exposed timber panels in full exposure to the Melbourne weather. Cypress has long been recognized for its resistance to white ants and serve weathering conditions and forms a uniquely Australian Eco system softwood that is sustainably harvested under the control and guidelines used by NSW State Forest. The timber exhibits outstanding colour and knot characteristics combined with low shrinkage and in ground capacity of the heartwood. This species has been developed over the last 20 years into the Patented Durabeam glulam product which is developed by Laminated Timber Supplies and manufactured under licence through WTI Warrnambool. The vertical fins not only give a resounding visual appeal to the huge areas of glass and concrete but break up and give shade protection to the lower floor and glazed balcony areas of the building. The Aerial Apartment project has become a local landmark displaying simplicity yet creating a “Colonnade vertical fin element” unlike anything built to date in Melbourne.

Keep The Area Under Your Deck Dry & Usable InsideOut® Under Deck Protection is a product developed in the USA. It solves the age old problem for those who have wanted to utilize under the deck space and keep it dry in the wet, expanding the outdoor living space.
InsideOut® is a specially designed pre-engineered ceiling system that transforms the unsightliness of the underside of the deck into a desirable and usable outdoor living area all year round. Is it just for homes? No, InsideOut® is the perfect solution for both home and commercial solutions when waterproofing under a deck is required. It can be used as a ceiling on all types of applications inside and outside.
Architects... Now you have a product which will save money when requiring waterproofing under decks and balconies, with no maintenance or painting. It looks smart and can be used for many applications inside or outside. It’s a Green Product. Tiled Showers Made Easy... A new solution from Atlantis removes the challenge of fitting a channel drain into a timber floor, or into any flooring structure where there are unacceptable risks of water leakage.
Not having to separately form and screed the shower floor saves time and money, not to mention a major headache. And it also takes care of waterproofing in the most critical risk area of the shower.
The one-piece Linea Quattro tile-over shower base and integrated channel drain is designed to achieve a level-access shower floor – in most cases without the need for cutting into the joists. Moulded from rigid GRP composite, the Linea Quattro shower base is already 100% waterproof, comes in multiple sizes for common showering spaces, and fits easily into an existing floor cavity once the surface flooring is removed.
Once fitted the shower base is immediately ready to tile. Because the drain is located discreetly at the side or back, tiling is a breeze and opens up the option for using larger format tiles which can be fixed in a single plane. No more unsightly cuts to the centre and fewer grout lines make a much cleaner finish for the shower floor. Atlantis is so confident of the durability of its one-piece shower base that it offers a
25-year warranty against leaks – a performance guarantee unheard of elsewhere. The benefits of the Atlantis shower system do not stop with the shower base. In keeping with its reputation for bulletproof integrity, add-on components will guarantee the structure and waterproofing of the entire shower area. Atlantis offers 2120mm high frameless glass screen options in a choice of sliding door, hinging door or fixed panel (walk-in) configurations. By purchasing the system as a base and screens package, it is possible to create a stunning new frameless shower in a matter of hours.

BALL BEARING DOOR TRACKS Engineered & Manufactured in Australia since 1880
Charles Marshall P/L is a family run business based in Richmond, Victoria, Australia. Our flagship product is an extensive range of FITZROY Ball Bearing Sliding Track systems.
COMPANY HISTORY
Charles Marshall established his engineering business in Fitzroy, Victoria in 1880. Over one hundred and thirty years on, the company has grown, prospered and is still owned and run by the Marshall family. This unique patented system covers a vast range of applications from light-weight kitchen drawers up to giant one tonne door installations and beyond. Developed in 1932, the unique FITZROY system provides a reliable and simple solution to the challenge of finding a durable sliding door track. A FITZROY system was fitted to the bronze doors in 1932 at the Shrine of Rememberance in Melbourne. Today, that same system shows negligible wear and is still operating with effortless ease. Since 1932 FITZROY has been opening doors on some of the most prestigious architectural projects around Australia.
UNIVERSITY TESTED
The University of Melbourne Engineering Department tested a typical section of FITZROY track. The track was subjected to 258 hours of non-stop opening and closing operation. This means that the test door opened and closed fully 130,000 times, travelling approximately 160 kilometres. PRECISION MEASUREMENT RESULTS WERE IMPRESSIVE. Cage Wear - No evidence of wear on either surface Ball Wear - Precision measuring found no evidence of ball wear. Track Wear - 0.0005", So minute as to be regarded as negligible. CONCLUSION From these exhaustive tests, the wear rate calculated was so low it was not possible to estimate the life of the track.
Although FITZROY boasts installation in such projects as the Melbourne Casino, Parliament House in Canberra and the Sydney Opera House- there are thousands of smaller, but equally spectacular buildings around Australia that have chosen FITZROY. Used universally in the construction industry you will find FITZROY in such places as: • • • • • • • • • •
