About me I am an architect, designer and problem solver with a BA (Hons) Class I, Architecture degree, a FdA Interior Design degree, and soon to be Masters Degree. After two years at Newcastle College I decided that architecture was the right path to take, swapping the East coast for the West coast which gave me a new perspective, not just on Architecture but on my personal opinions and goals. Gaining skills in different design fields, I have quickly become adaptable leading to an open mind and an unprejudiced thought process when approaching new challenges. My love for architecture stems for my love of drawing, capturing my intentions in a single image exploring shape and form without limit. The world has changed, architecture has changed and now is the time for bright minds to take on the challenges in this new world to the extent of redefining a house and what peoples needs are or readdressing public space and what the word public means in the modern world. These are only a handful of exiting topics we as architects must face now and I cannot wait to show you my interpretation of this throughout my portfolio. 2

MArch Year 2 Semester 2 Thesis Project A building which builds buildings - This current project is a legacy project aimed at flood risked areas which can be replicated around the country as an experimental approach to housing with the intention of streamlining the housing process by growing materials on site to then be used for the construction of modular parts of a housing unit to then be built on the allocated housing lots. The hub building dubbed the valley, as it brings a small part of the countryside in to the city centre, contains a biomass CHP and the same modules as the housing to create that connection between the two such that the valley building may be used by the public as a community hub and power source for the new and existing residents creating a cyclical economy ending in the valley producing modules for a new valley building to be built elsewhere around the country.

MArch Year 2 Semester 1 Urban Design

Project Title Emerging Sea 2050

A group project base in Birkenhead on the south side of the Mersey focused on celebrating the idea of extreme flooding by allowing water to fill the streets forming canals which then creates a series of experiences between water and land. The water front was completely overhauled creating new residential, commercial and leisure followed by works spaces and then finally a public hotel/ resort at the lake far west of the design. Through this new forms of connections were established, the ferry and small boat access and greater connections to the rest of Merseyside.

The Bank Building Design Within the Toxteth Dingle area sits a cliff, carved into the landscape causing a disconnect between the commercial river side and the residential side. The masterplan aimed to reconnect these two through the use of an artificial landscape with many twisting paths and defined routes. The aim of the residential intervention within this site, is to produce an internal park within the residential buildings and artificial landscape to produce habitats for other species while also creating sheltered spaces with quite living conditions. The Brunswick train station was relocated to the south of the masterplan, within a new build under the tower and stair cases to the far south. This means that the modular design can be repeated again and again along the cliff edge towards the north until it meets the road, allowing it to occupy the space left behind, reconnecting the top of the cliff to the bottom of the cliff. 16

BA Year 3 Semester 2: Comprehensive Design Project

Project Title Onaga Performing Arts School (OPA)

PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK STUDENT VERSION

2022 Portfolio Daniel-Lee Evans 21

This Project focused on re-purposing the left over space of Liverpool’s old flyover with a new LJMU performing arts building. To anchor the building into the busy site, the design focused on magpies and the courtship dance in which the male bird dances for the female birds attention and affection. The focus point being the female bird is replicated in plan as the school, the male bird, is giving the performance for the theatre, the female bird. The site had many landmarks surrounding it and was calling out for clear views of each one, this formed the glazed facades which sit between two concrete walls. The shape of interior spaces are fan like and framed views out of the build as well as framing view into the building.

PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK STUDENT VERSION

Following the cdp research stage, which had the topic of kinetic architecture and transparency, the design held on to the idea of using a sliding door to allow the interior theatre space to open up in to an outdoor performance space. This blends the line between indoor and out producing the buildings own performance.

Pavilions allow for breaks in a journey where people can experience their surroundings, acknowledging their place in time and space. This project brought together the journey of land, water, and people, blending the lines and allowed people to understand the importance of protecting these journeys. With its light touch, this building celebrates the landscape by letting the surrounding forms to take charge. If only for a second the mind can be taken somewhere protected and untouched by the ever present fears of climate change.

The journey starts when visitors leave their cars 100 meters away in a car park, and then walk to the beginning of the climb. The first pavilion is a sheltered space which has information about the site including a site map. Following the water uphill, to the second pavilion, here is the biodiversity pavilion, unheated and un-powered. Visitors are invited to walk through this diversity awareness space and continue the journey. From here is the viewing platform, which looks back over the town and across to Stoodly pike. Continuing through the site, the next pavilion is the Experimental Technologies pavilion, looking at sustainable methods of renewable energy, supplying the other pavilions. Finally, once at the top of the old quarry, is the Research centre, sitting off the hillside, over the lake. This space brings all the pavilions together completing the journey of water, land and movement.

Project Title Divergence

How is land formed? Can a building take on such a form? These were the questions asked as this project developed. The large free from shapes were created as the result of many experiments to understand how tectonic plates overlap, creating this breath taking structure. This building is almost hidden at first glance, only as you approach it are you faced with the huge plate like structure forming over your head. Allowing you a brief moment of scale and magnitude, in awe of the Earth’s capabilities. The project’s concept came from the divergent tectonic plates, of which it sits on the joining point of two sandstone plates. This informed the two building design as it pushes up in the middle like two forms of land crashing against each other.

BA Year 1 Semester 2: A Place for Crafting Tasked with the challenge of bringing a place for craft into the heart of Liverpool, this project focused on the cities rich boating history and aimed to create a building for boat making. The site on the docks posed many issues such as the proximity to the water, but the finished result anchored to the site shining a new light on the age of boat building. This timber boat shed was inspired by the shape and form of boats and took every design choice to create a ship like atmosphere. From the ribbed walls to the ship like roof structure carving the way to a new generation of bout building
