Hello, my name is Abbie Green and I have currently just completed my BA Architecture (HONS) degree at Liverpool John Moores University. I have always been inspired by the world around me and love seeing how different parts of the world approach architecture, through both my own opinions formed by the small amount of travelling I have done and other people’s perspectives within photographs of the way they see the world. Many friends and colleagues have described me as a people person, due to my love for wanting to understand other people’s viewpoints and gain insight into different aspects of life. I believe I am a very dedicated and hard working person in all areas of my life but specifically within my passion for architecture. Throughout my education I have always known I wanted to pursue a career in architecture. The experiences I have had so far during this period of my life as well as within the industry have been crucial for my development as a budding Architect, but also as a person in general. They have helped me to form an opinion on not only the type of architecture that interests me the most, but also the ways in which I want to use my skills to positively impact the world around me.

‘A Place of Shared Stories’
Comprehensive Design Project
For many people a core desire is to feel as though they are a part of something bigger than themselves, connected to a larger community where they belong and are accepted. Communities are places of immense importance and have developed from an individual being part of one because of where they live, to being able to be part of a much wider community spread across the world because of their beliefs, sexual orientation, ethnicity and even because of a football team they support. The concept ‘A Place of Shared Stories’ aims to form an area within the Ten Streets which stitches together its history, with new stories being created by its users, through changes to the ways in which our high street’s function. The concept also aims to create a sense of place and gathering space for the area, where people from different demographics can come together to share their own stories within creative work and social environments, while creating new stories together as a wider community.

Formation of the built form came from the use of triangles, laid out to create three zones of use with a central outdoor action area. A key part of the massing was to allow for multiple links through the spaces at ground floor level to aid connections to the high street. The spaces functions evolved to incorporate a cafe, supermarket, community workspace, commercial workspace and residential accommodation. The main design consideration was to analyse how spaces of differing functions interacted and how the flow of people through differing levels of public and private was controlled. As well as this the spaces also needed to interact with the high street being created on Dublin Street and fit into the interesting roof scape of the wider area. 2

The ground floor of the design has been given completely over for public use, with a pedestrianised high street encompassing street furniture and market stalls, a centralised action area for performance, cafe, supermarket, bar, reception, gallery exhibition space and rentable community workshops which can be used for many purposes. Such as the addition of partitioned walls to separate into smaller spaces, miniture pods could be added to create individual rented space or left completley open for sports activities. The first floor of the design caters for the commercial workspace, where four large rentable spaces of different sizes can be occupied by singular creative companies or multiple individuals after being separated within. Located on the second floor of the design are residential units which can also be rented out by the commercial companies for live work accommodation. They include two one bed studios, a two bed studio and a communal area where residents can gather. The third floor of the design aims to activate the roof of the design by creating an internal winter garden and an external roof garden which can be used all users. Security will be needed as the spaces are accessed via the main residential stair.

The Ten Streets district in Liverpool is currently at a turning point in its history due to the proposed regeneration in the area. Ten Streets was aways seen as one of the hearts of Liverpool’s industrial generation, due to the docks in which it is situated and the historic warehouses it houses. However, in future plans this area of the North Docks district is proposed to yet again become the unique heart of the surrounding developments, to form a centre of creativity. Dublin Street is the widest in the area and is suggested within the framework to become a pedestrian route only. However, wider changes may need to occur to allow for accessible routes to the newly proposed high street, through existing pathways, as well as restored connections from the Eldonian Village to the Ten Streets district, which are currently blocked by the trainline. The analysis also showed the need for a possible new station between Sandhills and Moorfields. As a train user it is noted that the distance between these two stations is much longer than any other, where if the public where to walk from the existing stations to Dublin Street it would approximately take them 20 minutes compared to a possible 5 minutes with a new station and pedestrian crossing. Currently Dublin Street is occupied by mainly empty warehouses and service shops such as engineers. To create a thriving high street the uses will have to change to ones of greater public communication.

Part of the concept was the aim to create a sense of place and a definition to the streets. Where the design can act as a marker to the new high street and community it encapsulates complimenting the history of the area, as well as standing out as a new creative hub for socialisation. As the concept formed around creating an environment of communication it was important to keep any facades that faced areas of activity as open as possible, such as those which lead to balconies, routes through the built forms at ground level and facades which face the high street.

The main aim for the project was to create and activate a high street on Dublin Street to bring back a sense of community to the area and solidify the resident’s connection to their history before new residents and projects join through the regeneration, such as Everton’s new Bramley Moore Dock stadium. As the site would be located on a functioning high street, levels of activity will vary not only through the day but also during the week. During daytime Monday to Friday the main users would be those who are living or working in the building, taking over the cafe and rentable community workshops on the ground floor, commercial workshops on the first floor and accommodation on the second floor. Of a night during Monday to Sunday the ground floor will be the busiest with the bar, supermarket and high street taken over by performances and markets. The visualisation of ‘A Place of Shared Stories’ above taken at dusk on a weekend is when Dublin Street would be at its maximum activity level, due to pop up market stalls, outdoor performances, indoor gallery exhibitions, by the community or commercial users, as well as the use of the cafe, bar and supermarket. 6

‘Windows to the Soul’ Weather or Not
As an industry architects are failing to solve the issues climate change is creating. We are using temporary fixes given to us by technologies due to being too scared to face the drastic changes our industry needs to undertake. The project ‘Windows to the Soul’ aims to solve these issues using the ‘reusable architecture’ movement. The title can be taken both metaphorically, by how we are looking inwards to change the soul of architectural design and literally by using windows and exhibitions to view the consequenses climate change is causing to our environments soul.

‘The Architecture of the Brain’ Experimental Project
Born from the idea that Architects and Neuroscientists could work together ‘The Architecture of the Brain’ is a research centre designed to investigate the affects addiction and trauma can have on the brain’s development. The hope of this project was that by examining the function of the brain within architecturally stimulating spaces, which also inspire the brains of its young patients, some of the long-lasting damage caused to the brain’s connections could be prevented, protecting our younger generations minds.

‘Patchwalks ‘
Individual Detailed Spatial Design
Within this project we were tasked to think about architecture in the broader context of the city while creatively thinking beyond individual buildings and instead to that of the urban fabric. Aiming to analyse the current urban context and produce an urban strategy to provide a coherent, structured composition of design ideas that collectively act as a catalyst for the regeneration of the Fabric District, by proposing a series of interventions and proposals for new spaces of urban activity. Patchwalks was create a stronger link between the linear park and food market by cutting through the TJ Hughes building creating an arcade within.

‘Passing Time’
A Place for Crafting
Born from the want to create a space where the restoration of antique clocks could be celebrated ‘Passing Time’ is a collation of public, private and semi-private spaces within one structure. The idea of this project was to create a space in which members of the public could enjoy watching and learning about the horological institute of the restoration of antique clocks while watching the process happening within the workshop. As well as a public space the building also houses living quarters for the owner of the spaces below.

‘The 27 Club’ Archifilm
Formed from the idea to create a memorial space where people can reflect on the lives of the ‘27 club’ my Archifilm project saw me create a film to show how a user would move through the spaces I had created while the song ‘Always remember us this way’ from ‘A star is born’ played in the background. You can watch this video which has been uploaded to my architecture student page @abbie_architecture where the full extent of my project has been investigated. I did thoroughly enjoy this first project I submitted and feel like it was beneficial.

Work Experience:
During December 2016 I completed work experience at Mersey Design Group (MDG) Architectural firm, I looked to complete my work experience here to gain more knowledge of the inner workings of an architectural firm and the key skills needed by an Architect. While at the firm I composed a portfolio of the work completed that week and worked on different types of software. I worked with many different people and attended meetings where I put forward my ideas, I found this to be extremely worthwhile and enjoyable. While at Carmel College during April 2018 I was chosen as one of twenty young people interested in architecture to complete a week-long course in Manchester, run by Regeneration Brainery in partnership with Capital and Centric. During which we visited the architectural firms ARUP and OMI as well as site visits to some of Capital and Centric’s up coming projects such as the recently completed KAMPUS. During this week we also attended talks with some of Manchester’s politicians where we discussed ways to regenerate areas and give our own opinions on some of their ideas. This week was such an important part of my drive to complete my architectural degree and begin my journey into the profession as I thororghly enjoyed every moment. During the second year of my BA Architecture degree I was commissioned to complete artwork by Orvis UK for them to use within their marketing. This experience helped me to gain knowledge of how to take a brief from clients and when beneficial adapt it to incorporate my own style, whilst also enhancing the brief outlined by the client. I am very thankful to Orvis for giving me the opportunity to enter the creative professional world and in helping me to diversify my skillset.
