ELLOISE SIMPSON 2022 PORTFOLIO

Liverpool John Moores University BA (Hons) Architecture

I originally did a year studying Fine Art but realised over my first year that it was the design and construction of exhibition spaces, productions and pop-up instillations and events I enjoyed the most. I realised that I wasn’t on the path that I wanted and re evaluated my degree, two of my favourite artists Ed Cater, and Aldo Rossi made me realise that the study Architecture was far more poetic than my first impression. My work experience at DK-Architects only furthered my drive to study architecture. I have a hands-on approach and have not let my love of physical art and form deter my development of CAD software in my work, rather they supplement each other. I am a determined, reliable and hardworking individual who is keen to apply myself in a challenging new setting; having a proactive nature coupled with excellent interpersonal skills and British Sign Language Level One, I can clearly and concisely communicate in most settings. I work well as part of a team, but can also focus on more bespoke work independently, with a keen eye for detail. In 2021, I gained a place on the RIBA Student Mentoring Scheme and gained insight from my mentor at Brock Carmichael Architects Liverpool. The mentorship has advanced my existing understanding of an architectural practice from my self found work experience at DK Architects in the summer of 2018. I hope to put my skills into practice and continue to develop my work.

The Incubator start-up project aims to be a visual demonstration of some of the possible postpandemic physical implications to the built realm within the dense topology of a city. The project focus on the preservation of existing networks, but also attempts to harness the impetus force of the COVID-19 pandemic to creating new and more resilient connectivity networks, to attempt future-proofing our built environment from societal and environmental changes. Whilst the end of the COVID-19 pandemic seems within reach the impact and lasting effects will not be fully visible to long after the final sways of the pandemic done, therefore a detailed study of historical pandemics lead this project. The COVID-19 pandemic has heightened fear and insecurity regarding people’s livelihoods and job security many have lost their jobs or found themselves unable to work their job due to the crippling effect of long covid or the pandemic itself. The project shines light to independent crafts people and start-ups wishing to become their own bosses and create security where they found none. While the full impact of COVID-19 will only be clearly long after the pandemic, the current impact shows a desire for improvement of mental health and physical health. The project aims to tackle this by making the building work for its occupants, a key focus in the building is the internal comfort as well as facilities. A green roof and extra facilities such as gym, relaxed seating, reference library and large widows with framed views to try encouraging a focus on mental and physical health.

Historical Pandemic Synopsis The essay that informed the initial study lead a detailed analysis of three past pandemics, the bubonic plague, cholera, and tuberculosis, as they all occurred at contextually critical developmental periods in history. The bubonic plague blighted nearly the entirety of the renaissances' 200-year reign, cholera was a permanent shadow to the Victorian industrial revolution, and tuberculosis was a savage blow to a population already influx from World War II. The selection of past pandemics was due to the already visible impact of the COVID-19 pandemic a forced embrace of the information and technology age. The overriding conclusion from analysing past pandemics was that form has followed fear-ofinfection just as much as function, the repeating features from post-pandemic design showed emphasis on flexible architecture that can adapt and change. There is a strong trend towards a more decentralised city core structure, as the decentralised core creates more emphasis on walkability and strengthens the interconnectivity networks. A use of mixed units to increase resilience to the interconnectivity of the city and its street culture. The essay showed a clear heightened importance of public amenities as well spaces such as parks, usable green space as well as walkways. Historic pandemics illustrate the health of a city is only as strong as its weakest members.

1906 Bramley Moore Dock Showing Hydraulic Bridge. 1850 Historic Map On Saturday 3 to Sunday 4 May 1941 the largest explosion in the entirety of WW2 for the whole of Liverpool went off in Huskisson Branch Dock, the section of the docklands is connected and part of the Bramley Moore dock system (National Museums Liverpool) The explosion was so severe as the incendiary bomb landed close to the SS Malakand that was stationed there. The ship was full of over 1,000 tons of bombs and shells. The overhead railway was damaged and many of the buildings where badly damaged and where later fully destroyed.

Design Concept The proposed development in Festival Gardens contains a weather station for the recording and collection of data that will allow the localised impact climate change has to the region to become apparent. The materiality of the building and the overall form are responsive to an environmental study of Festival Gardens. The building will also aid in the education and study of climate change. The development is focused on education and engagement, this is achieved through the proposed building programme, a library, reference library along with education spaces for lectures and classroom teaching that will allow an indepth engagement with both higher and further education facilities in the North West of England.

Historic maps of the site can date back to 1850, the site is completely undeveloped with little buildings around the its circumference. The most dramatic change to the site is clearly visible in comparing the 1920s and 1950s historic maps. Within a site visit it became apparent that the site was having issues with subsidence, cracks as well as sunken roads with raised mains grids where visible. The raised mains grids and drains caused issues for low chassis cars using the carpark situated in the North East of the site. The site was filled in with landfill waste, mainly old dangerous cars, part of a Liverpool city initiative to make roads safer. The initial analysis lead to a lightweight main structure design with reinforce foundations most likely of a raft formation. Within development of the building deep pile and friction piles where ruled out due to the development only being 2 stories tall. The landfill releases gasses due the tightly compressed nature of the waste that means most decomposition is done anaerobically. In order to control the gasses a small gas substation is in the south east of Festival Gardens and the chosen site for the weather station. 2022 Portfolio Elloise Simpson

Seel Street even without the majority of the street inside the UNESCO World Heritage Character zone is still inside the Buffer Zone for the UNESCO World Heritage Site and deservedly so with 20 grade II listed buildings on Seel Street as well as a locally listed building the Blue Angel a tourist attraction featured on many guided tours of the city due to the rich history of the club and its connection to the Beatles. For the development of the Seel Street plot it is key to draw from the surrounding area and to make sure new developments complement.

FABRIC DISTRICT Development Plan and Park Liverpool John Moores University BA (Hons) Architecture

Thematic Concept The redevelopment of the Fabric District could be achieved via historical sympathetic design respecting key buildings and supporting key contextual activities such as graffiti and mural creation. It is probable that involving the community will create a far more likely sustainable model to develop with a far greater projected longevity compared to not involving the community. The Fabric Districts current organic growth and development add character and it could be lost if a utilitarian tabula rasa approach where to come into fruition.
