Salam! I come from the food lovers paradise of Malaysia and I have got a real appetite for food and travel. One day, while on a quest to search for the best warm onion soup on a cold winters day in Paris, I thought to myself; “Who would have thought to build a glass pyramid in front of the Louvre?”. So I went back home, with that question still lingering in my mind and I told myself, “I’m going to study Architecture!”. From then, I began my journey of researching architectural innovations. Just like a cantilever, this journey has left me wanting for more. This portfolio is a story of my journey through Architecture School and the lessons I have learned from it. Do enjoy!

Lutyens Crypt

The very first time I landed in Liverpool, my jaws were dropped. The people were the warmest of all, accepting me as one of their own, a newly made Scouser. This city has played a huge role in the industrial revolution times. It is rich in history and there is plenty of sights to explore.

While walking through the streets of Liverpool, I took the chance of taking pictures. This gave me a chance to explore compositions and angles. This also reinforces the awareness of the need for good street and building design. A good start to the degree!

Draw, Draw, Draw

The first project was a fun one. We were asked to study designated buildings and I was lucky enough to study Frank Lloyd Wright’s Jacobs Second Home.

“I believe in God, only I spell it nature.” - Frank Lloyd Wright’s -. The building was designed as a semi circular building with a double storey glass curtain facing the South sun, turning its back from the cold Northern Winds. The way the overhanging roof works can be illustrated in the darwaing on page 4. The back portion is protected underneath a thick layer of earth which regulates the temperature of the building (shown in page 5). The excellent thermal mass of earth works effectively to reduce the energy consumption of the building.

The importance of drawings cannot be understated. Drawing is just thinking but on a piece of paper.

Just like the movement of the sun changing as time goes by, Working efficiently gets the point across ro people but with minimum work. Model making is a highly benefitial way of working. One model can used to show shadow studies, structure and also the feel of the space.

This sun study shows the angles and depth of penetration during autumn months. As it gets later in the year, sunlight penetrates deeper into the building and heating the concrete slab where heat can be stored.

Liverpool Timeline of Events

Understand it, Live it Learning about a site is the a roller coaster of adventure. You begin to discover the past. Sometimes good and sometimes bad. Learning history connects us to the area of research. It creates a deep bond that can motivate and influence a design.

5121AR Urban Analysis Project

This particular project was a research on the Fabric district area.It was once a bustling part of town where people would spend their time. Today, it is disused and left empty wih only a few shops left to themselves. The approach taken was to design a link from the surrounding areas.

Choosing What Matters Most

Wan Wan Fauzi 2021 Portfolio

5123AR Timber Housing Origination Sections The scheme for this timber housing initial idea was to wrap the building around a central garden. Inspired by Wright’s approach to design buildings to nature.

5124AR Timber Housing Resolution Plan The idea of the garden was central to the design. Even when the design evolved, the garden was never compromised. Nature is what matters most to me.

How Its Built Understanding how a building is built is crucial. Design specifications from the materials to the finishes and connections are specificly chosen to potray intention. Just like buildings, knowing what we are made of is also crucial. It is important to know our strength and weaknesses so that we can always improve to strive for betterneess.

6121AR Weather or Not Research

Awareness and Sensitivity Buildings are built to suit its local conditions. This way the building does not waste energy and resources keeping the spaces habitable. Being aware of the conditions enables is to fit the building no matter the location. This research was focusing on how vernacular and modern buildings adapt to rain.

Design Journal The most important tool for an architecture student is a pen and paper. Having a sketchbook helps keep record of ideas, research and development. A good design journal is able to show the thought process and decisions made witihin a project.

End Words If you reach this far, thank you for reading my work. These three years have been a truly eventful journey to self discovery indeed. After all these years of work and dedication studying architecture, I still have not found the answer to why the Louvre pyramid is as is. However, that only means there is much more to explore. Lastly, I would like to thank my numerous university staff and tutors for looking over on my progress over the years and guiding me to where I am today. Stay Safe!
