Chile Chile – researchers say – means “at the end of the world” in the language of the Aymara. Many Chileans also see their homeland as a kind of “island” – separated from the rest of South America by the vast Andes. Eighteen years of brutal military dictatorship under the despot Augusto Pinochet did the rest to push the country to the global margins, both morally and socially. In terms of architecture, too, only a few had the country on their radar screens.

That changed in the 1990s, when a “golden generation” of ­architects that include, for example, Cecilia Puga, Mathias Klotz and Sebastián Irarrázaval attracted attention around the world – with architecturally sophisticated villas on steep rocky coasts, hotels nestled poetically in lush landscapes, futuristic university buildings and dignified wineries.

Chile’s architects have also increasingly delighted on the international stage: the Expo Pavilion in Milan ( Undurraga Devés, 2015 ), Smiljan Radić’s ­Serpentine Pavilion in London ( 2014 ), the 2016 Architecture Biennale in Venice curated by Pritzker Prize laureate Alejandro Aravena and – also at the Biennale – the Chilean contributions by Pezo von Ellrichshausen ( Vara Pavilion, 2016 ), Pedro Alonso and Hugo Palmarola ( Monolith Controversies, 2014 ) and Alejandra Celedón (­ Stadium, 2016 ) attracted much attention.

To better understand Chilean architecture’s success story, the editors of archithese traveled for one month through the Andean country, with its stunning natural landscapes – a land of fire and ice: we saw volcanoes, geysers and dustdry deserts, salt flats and glaciers. And we met openhearted and friendly people.

We got to see magnificent and spatially ingenious buildings: villas by Pezo von Ellrichshausen; hotels by Germán del Sol and Cazú Segers; a winery, a theater and museums by Smiljan Radić; university buildings by Elemental and much more. In addition, we paid visits to landscape designs that succeed in intensifying the existing potentials of the natural spaces, most notably the poetic interventions of Teresa Møller.

However – and this was the flip side – our journey was also disillusioning. Chile’s beautiful new architectural world turned out to be the domain of a small upper class. Only a privileged group shares the benefits of the neoliberal country’s sustained economic boom. Even though the country is economically well off according to statistics, the situation is tense. Driven by the hope of someday rising to the middle class, many young Chileans borrow money for their education but often fail to then find qualified jobs.

Those like us, who have the privilege of being able to move about almost exclusively within the spheres of outstanding new buildings, remain unaware of the sobering world of working-class and indigenous Chile. You have to leave the paths trodden by architectural tourists, drive out to the humble settlements and take a close look at what is missing: social building projects are almost non-existent in Chile, and the public realm is waiting in many places for ( re ) vitalization. We did not get to see any interesting new housing projects, but we did visit many bleak single-family housing developments, built on cheap land somewhere out in the middle of nowhere, with spiritless rows of hundreds of identical homes.

The environment, too, is sometimes heavily polluted: Lithium mining consumes large quantities of water and the capital, Santiago, suffocates every winter in smog. Global tourism is booming, meaning that crowds of people are flooding the national parks from Patagonia to Atacama. Hotel ships now sail as far as Antarctica, where tourists tread on the penguins’ feet in their colonies.

But the younger architects are starting to grapple with these issues.

They are increasingly questioning the impact of the economy on the environment, infrastructures and cities, and are aspiring to exert more influence on the housing situation and public spaces. The leeway to do so, however, is limited.

All the more reason why we have tried to put the spotlight on the tender young seedlings that have taken root and are flourishing on the broken edges of South America’s neoliberal “model state”.

Ceci devait changer dans les années 90. Une « génération dorée » de personnes travaillant dans ce domaine, tels Cecilia Puga, Mathias Klotz, Sebastián Irarrázaval, et quelques autres, allait attirer l’attention sur ce pays à un niveau mondial, avec des villas à l’architecture raffinée nichées sur des falaises abruptes en bord de mer, des hôtels poétiques implantés dans des paysages luxuriants, des universités futuristes ainsi que des domaines viticoles cossus.

Les architectes chiliens se révélèrent aussi de plus en plus comme des pointures de taille au niveau international, avec le pavillon d’exposition de Milan ( Undurraga Devés, 2015 ), le pavillon de la Galerie Serpentine à Londres ( Smiljan Radićs, 2014 ), la Biennale d’architecture de Venise 2016 sous la direction d’Alejandro Aravena, Prix ­Pritzker, et également à Venise, avec les contributions qui firent parler d’elles de Mauricio Pezo, de Sofia von Ellrichhausen ( Pavillon Varo, 2016 ), de Pedro Alonso et Hugo Palmarola ( Monolith Controversies, 2014 ) et d’Alejandra Celedón ( Stadium, 2016 ).

En vue de l’élaboration du présent numéro, la rédaction d­ ’archithese a voyagé durant un mois au Chili afin de mieux comprendre le succès phénoménal de son architecture. L’Etat andin s’est présenté comme une terre de feu et de glace. Nous avons vu des volcans, des geysers, des déserts arides, des salants et des glaciers. Et nous avons rencontré des personnes accueillantes et amicales.

Nous avons vu des bâtiments grandioses aux espaces raffinés : des villas de Pezo von Ellrichhausen, des hôtels de Germán del Sol et Cazú Segers, un domaine viticole, un théâtre et des musées de Smiljan Radić, des bâtiments universitaires de Elemental et bien d’autres immeubles. De plus, nous avons visité des travaux d’architectes paysagistes qui subliment le potentiel des espaces naturels, en premier lieu les interventions sur le paysage de Teresa Møller.

Pourtant, et ceci fut le revers de la médaille, notre voyage a aussi été désillusion. Ce beau monde nouveau de l’architecture chilienne s’est avéré être la sphère d’une classe supérieure minoritaire, car seul un petit groupe de personnes tire profit du boom économique persistant du pays organisé sur une base néolibérale. Même si, statistiquement, le pays se porte bien, il n’en demeure pas moins que la situation est tendue. Animés par l’espoir d’accéder une fois ou l’autre à la classe moyenne, bon nombre de jeunes Chiliens prennent des crédits pour financer leurs études, mais souvent, ils ne trouvent pas de places qualifiées à l’achèvement de celles-ci.

Ceux qui, comme nous, ont le privilège de se mouvoir presque exclusivement dans les sphères de bâtiments d’exception n’entreront pas en contact avec la classe désillusionnée des travailleurs et du Chili indigène. Il convient de quitter les sentiers battus du tourisme architectural pour se rendre dans de modestes lotissements et regarder de plus près ce qui fait défaut : des projets de constructions à composante sociale et l’espace public qui, en bien des endroits, est en attente de sa réactivation ou de son activation. Nous n’avons pas vu de projets intéressants de bâtiments d’habitation récents, mais au contraire bon nombre de quartiers sans âme de maisons familiales, construits sur des terrains bon marché en périphérie, au milieu de nulle part, composés de centaines de maisons identiques alignées de manière sinistre, comme dans un camp.

L’environnement est aussi parfois fortement pollué. L’extraction du lithium nécessite de grandes quantités d’eau, et la capitale Santiago étouffe chaque hiver dans le smog. Le tourisme mondial, en expansion exponentielle, déverse des masses humaines de plus en plus grandes dans les parcs nationaux, de la Patagonie jusqu’à Atacama. Les hôtels flottants se rendent à présent jusqu’en Antarctique, où les touristes marchent sur les pattes des pingouins rassemblés en colonies.

Une jeune génération d’architectes commence cependant à s’occuper de ces thèmes. Ils se posent de plus en plus la question de la répercussion des activités économiques sur les espaces naturels, sur les infrastructures et sur les villes. Ils désirent plus souvent prendre davantage de responsabilités face aux questions d’habitat et d’espaces publics. La marge de manœuvre à cet égard reste cependant réduite. A plus forte raison, nous avons tenté de mettre en évidence les plantes fragiles qui poussent en bordure des failles de cet Etat ­néolibéral exemplaire d’Amérique du Sud.

Architecture as a Common Field of Knowledge Felipe De Ferrari and Jørg Himmelreich in conversation with Alejandra Celedón, Francisco Díaz, Arturo Scheidegger, Ignacio García Partarrieu and Tomás Villalón On March 21, 2019, the diverse group of young architects and academics met at the Pontificia Universidad Católica in Santiago for a panel discussion to reflect on the practice of architecture in Chile, the cultural climate and the effects of neoliberalism on architecture and urbanism with a specific focus on the generation of young designers. What are their positions on culture? Which themes, trajectories and perspectives within their theoretical explorations and built projects are the most relevant? How do methodological, structural, conceptual and aesthetic considerations answer to – or challenge – social, political, geographical and economic conditions? And to what extent do Chilean strategies reflect global discourses? They demand a change of self-conception within the discipline – one that entails a shift from building to developing projects.

From the Golden to the Lithium Generation Jørg Himmelreich Architects like Alejandro Aravena, Sebastián Irarrázaval, Mathias Klotz, Cecilia Puga, Smiljan Radić and several other charismatic figures put Chile at the center of the ar­chitectural map in the 1990s. This “golden generation” established a discourse around minimalism and phenomenology, creating a Chilean version of critical regionalism with an emphasis on place and material – and bringing forth fascinating abstract objects in stunning landscapes. Architecture historian Alberto Pérez-Gómez spoke of “experience, presence, immediacy and circumstances” as the main objectives within this group.1 And Horacio Torrent described this phase as a revalorization of modern architecture, with a focus on basic composition and modern cubical forms. Chilean architecture has since been – and still is – recognized and extensively published worldwide. It is praised as being “clean, pure, silent, sublime, essential, simple and elemental”.2 Almost two decades later : Are these still the central ambitions around which the architecture discourse in Chile revolves ?

Felipe De Ferrari This group of five to ten figures started working back when democracy was being restored, enjoying

a climate of growing openness to the world and a favorable economic situation caused by the intensification of neoliberal agendas after the dictatorship in Chile. They have contributed in several ways to the development of Chilean architecture.

A second generation followed, establishing a strong, bigger and more diverse architectural scene – growing from a handful of exceptional architects into “99 ways to deal with form” : a wide set of authors operating throughout the country, establishing consistent groups of work, building for private clients and the public, and teaching at various schools of architecture while reshaping their profiles. They have established international networks and have gained international recognition, too. Many of them have been so busy building sophisticated artifacts that they don’t find time to participate in a political debate or to formulate an agenda addressing demands of society and social trans­ formations at large. Their attitude is ambiguous and there is a strong sense of fragmentation.

Then, a critical third generation emerged, which is still developing. They are not interested in reducing the complexity of architectural conditions. They read things within a bigger context, looking for commonalities and under-

standing architecture as a collective and broader field of knowledge. They do not necessarily come from a privileged background or genealogy. Most of them understand history and culture as a possible means for envisioning and ­ building an alternative future. And they see potential in architecture aligning with social transformations of different kinds – expanding the limits of archi­ tecture itself. They all have a critical reading of Chile as a complex society, with all its contradictions.

JH Can you trace back the be­­ ginning of this development and name figures who triggered it ?

FDF The Monolith Controversies by Pedro Alonso and Hugo Palmarola3, shown at the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale, can be read as a first public symptom of this new attitude towards the architectural project, which can not only be a building, but also a critical device, research or publication.

Das Gewicht der Welt Über die Bauten von Smiljan Radić Das Werk Smiljan Radićs entzieht sich einer klaren Festschreibung. Mittels räumlicher Brüche und dem Einbezug von Felsblöcken als Zeugen geologischer Verwerfungen reflektiert der Architekt kritisch und poetisch zugleich die politischen, sozialen und wirtschaftlichen Erschütterungen in Chile und anderswo, die seit den 1970er-Jahren die Welt verändert haben.1 Autor : Philip Ursprung

Smiljan Radić war acht Jahre alt, als die chilenische Luftwaffe am 11. September 1973 La Moneda, den Präsidentenpalast in Santiago de Chile, bombardierte. Er erinnert sich, wie die Kampfflugzeuge am Tag des Staatsstreichs über das Stadtviertel flogen, in dem er mit seinen Eltern wohnte. Da Salvador Allende – seit 1970 Präsident – versuchte, Chile auf demokratischem Weg nach und nach in eine sozialistische Republik zu verwandeln, hatte das Militär mit Unterstützung der USA geputscht. Allende war weder zum Rücktritt bereit noch dazu, gegen den Staatsstreich vorzugehen – er starb in La Moneda.

Mit seinem Tod endete die Demokratie in Chile. Das Parlament wurde aufgelöst und an seiner statt eine Militärjunta eingesetzt. Tausende Regimegegner wurden gefoltert und getötet; viele gingen ins Exil.

Chile blieb 17 Jahre lang eine Diktatur – bis zu den demokratischen Wahlen 1990. In den 1970er-Jahren war es das erste Land, dessen Wirtschaft radikal nach neoliberalen Prinzipien umgestaltet wurde. Die sogenannten Chicago Boys um den Ökonomen Milton Friedman berieten die Junta bei der Deregulierung der Wirtschaft und damit auch bei der Ausbeutung der öffentlichen Reichtümer.3 Das Trauma der zerstörten Demokratie und die Jahre der Unterdrückung spalten noch heute die Gesellschaft, die stark von ökonomischer Ungleichheit geprägt ist.4 Noch immer wird nach Verschleppten und

Gab es zu Beginn der Diktatur noch grosse internationale Solidarität mit der chilenischen Bevölkerung seitens vieler Intellektueller und linker Parteien, schwand diese in den 1980er-Jahren allmählich. Die sozialistischen Staaten hielten das Andenken an Allende hoch und kritisierten die Rolle, welche die USA bei der Katastrophe gespielt hatte. Im Westen geriet Chile jedoch aus dem Fokus.

Im Boom, der auf die Rezession der 1970er-Jahre folgte, war kein Platz mehr für dieses Land.

Reclaiming the Public Realm Young Chilean Architects Revive Performative Concepts of the 1960s.

For three decades, Chilean architecture has circled around minimalism and discrete objects in a romanticized landscape. But an engaged group of young architects is shifting the focus of the discourse towards the public realm and recalling the sociopolitical and ecological dimensions of their profession. Their initiatives, projects and buildings seem to echo ideas from experimental architectural practices of the 1960s, translating them into a contemporary context.

Since the 1990s, the discussion of Chilean architecture has focused on “abstraction, basic composition and modern cubical form”.1 The discourse has centered mainly on private housing projects in a romanticized landscape. It emerged hand in hand with the country’s turn from a neoliberal dictatorship to a neoliberal democracy. As Chilean architect and theorist Francisco Díaz wrote, this discourse was “so powerful that it soon turned into an ideology of sorts”.2 The architecture which led to that discourse, and which was reproduced by it, is inaccessible for most Chileans ( see Rachel Théodore, “Chile : A Land of Contrasts,” pp. 8–14. ). The ongoing privatization effects a lack of investments in the public space. In the process, the understanding that public space is also a political space has fallen into oblivion. But a new generation of architects with a strong social agenda is emerging. This text envisions an alternative reading of contemporary Chilean architecture that goes beyond the broadly discussed “golden generation”. Interestingly, the strategies of these architects are not solely innovative reactions to the country’s dismantling of the public sphere under dictatorship and neoliberalism,3 but at a closer look seem to be rooted in both Chilean and international architectural practices of the 1960s.

The Slumbering Collective Unconscious To this day, many Chilean architects refer to the school of Valparaíso and the Open City ( Ciudad Abierta ) as major influences on their understanding of architecture ( see, e.g. Philip Ursprung, “Das Gewicht der Welt,” pp. 48–61. ). The school’s narrative started in 1952, when Alberto Cruz Covarrubias was asked to teach at the Institute of Architecture at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso ( PUCV ). His understanding of modern architecture had been rejected at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, where he had previously taught. In his composition

classes, he confronted his students with the plastic aspects of architecture as opposed to an understanding of modernity that consisted of functionalism, technical modernization and social utopianism.4 Cruz brought a group of six other architects, an artist, and the poet Godofredo Iommi Marini to the PUCV. There, they initiated a variation of modern architecture that dealt with a specific entanglement of life, work, nature, poetry and architecture.

Since the early 1950s, poetry has played an important role for the new pedagogical agenda in Valparaíso’s architecture school. Students and staff gathered to perform phalènes, which are something between public recitations and collective performances, often resulting in the production of an artwork. These poetic acts occupied and filled sites with spontaneous actions and words.

Another of the group’s new pedagogical principles was to require students to work outside the university, so they would approach architecture by observing the city. The urban realm was discovered and analyzed through sketches made in situ, accompanied by short texts. This opened up new perspectives and revealed new potentials for architecture : Design did not begin by conceiving a building, but by imagining the life accommodated by architecture. Even though there had been similar attempts to transfer the architects’ work from the classroom into the city’s reality, the group refused any sociopolitical engagement.

The paradox of being truly apolitical in a political world becomes obvious in the group’s Amereida – a pan-American journey they began in 1965. This travesía was an attempt to explore the territory in order to find a South American identity that could be freed of its colonial past, meaning that at least the aftermath of colonial politics was a concern for the group. As a result of the journey, the PUCV established the Open City in 1970. The Open City is a remote laboratory for architecture, located within sand dunes near the Pacific Ocean about 30 km north of Valparaíso, that was – and still is – inhabited by faculty members. Even today, students, teachers and artists collaborate on construction projects for creations such as sculptures, pavilions and houses, where they hold games, performances, lectures and other events.

With the creation of the Open City in 1971, the group isolated itself from the everyday realities of Chile. One could argue that instead of observing and interacting with the city, the school went into voluntary exile. Only two years later, in 1973, Augusto Pinochet overturned the government, establishing a military dictatorship that lasted for almost two decades. The remoteness of the Open City can be read as a symbol of the inner emigration within Chile during the dictatorship. Architects and artists vanished in the 275 hectares of dune land and quietly worked on their self-sufficiency and artistic formation.

This text proposes a reading of contemporary architectures that traces their roots back to the school of Valparaíso, as well as to other protagonists and tendencies from the 1960s that will be introduced later on.

Even though the young generation does not often refer directly to Valparaíso, their approach, methods and techniques indicate parallels.

Same can be said about the school of Valparaíso : The professors asked students to sketch in the streets, read poetry and build sculptures in urban settings. But in the 1970s they chose to exile themselves into the Ciudad Abierta, a remote settlement in the dunes of Quintero, near the Atlantic Ocean.

Fairly stated, this text should be regarded as no other than a pastime, without any scholastic etiquette, written under the ambition of saying nothing new for the mere pleasure of doing so. We definitely celebrate dullness, redundancy and procrastination. We enjoy wasting time jumping from one duty to another. We use our daytime drawing over and over again to find the correct position for a door on a wall with the exact same commitment and futile intensity with which we decide the correct tone for a new layer of oil on a painted canvas. The overlap seems to follow the voluntary erosion of a rather traditional distinction between work and life. As romantic as it might appear ( perhaps oversweet as any existential plea ), we believe we not only work “for a living” but also “live for work”.

Obsessive Concentration Mysteriously enough, even if the notion of “work” implies both effort and action, the perception tends to describe the necessary power ( or lack of it ) to accomplish something. Thus, it is not about the “accomplishment”, but the means (either physical or mental difficulties) deployed to accomplish a desired outcome. Such a painful action, the so called “hard work”, ideally rendered as an obsessive consecration to an end, is normally associated with a poor life, with an inhuman exploitation of individual intimacy, even with the compulsive addiction of a workaholic drinking coffee late at night.

All in all, our everyday practice proves to be the opposite.

From our circular ( and somehow tautological ) perspective, either our duties are rather mild and easy, or our interest towards them tends to alleviate even the roughest task. “But, you do what you like”, has been the reproach of a somewhat

envious friend. Totally true. Yet, the line between doing art for art`s sake and practicing architecture within the legal and economical conventions of the professional system is tough by definition. If we read it twice, we also do architecture for architecture’s sake and art for an extremely sensitive and regulated market. The fact that we feel both ashamed and proud when being asked about “what we do for a living”, should be understood as the basic motivation for this essay.

A Dialectic Condition In one way or another, our apologetic embarrassment comes from the public acceptance of a self-given pleasure, from the fact that we draw those walls or paint those canvases without really noticing we were actually working or performing an effort. Hedonism comes in unison, from any direction and without any disciplinary hierarchy. We often realize we are not working for anyone other than ourselves, even if those drawings are meant to inform the construction of someone else’s house. We cannot avoid being seduced by this dialectic condition, by the confusing overlap between functions and perceptions, between personal ambitions and social expectations ( and their subsequent prejudices deeply embedded into our contemporary culture ). Genuine indulgencies rarely remain hidden.

Perhaps out of loyalty to our operative indifference, we would like to maintain the tension between one side and the other all the way through. Labels will not change our lifestyle ( neither our “work style” ). We do not intend to settle an argument for a definite demarcation. We do not see the point of knowing when work ends and life begins. We believe it is all the same thing ( we are pretty certain we are still alive while working ). We are fascinated, however, with the popular

acceptance that life in general can be separated into two ­opposite states: the active and the passive one. Thus, our naïve concern is to find the proper term that would sit right in between one state and the other, both physically and mentally, between being active and doing nothing at all, between effective production and lethargic contemplation ( which is, of course, another form of activity ). In other words, we are interested in the possibility of finding a precise term that could condense the exact symmetry between labor and leisure.

Compensation Time To start reviewing the aforementioned cultural prejudices about life and work, one could safely maintain an equivalent opposition between weekday and weekend. It seems to be common knowledge that weekends were invented to compensate with free time, enough to rest without constraints or responsibilities, those other busy days in which we are obliged to spend our physical, mental and emotional energies doing something we would rather not do. Weekends are indeed an extension of our nights. We work during the day and rest overnight, normally sleeping with our bodies in a comfortable horizontal extension, between a soft mattress and a warm blanket. That dormant, passive mode could be read as a biological justification, as the resulting rationalization of a natural phenomenon.

Following the Christian tradition, weekends are meant to be the “reward” given by God to those who work hard during the week, under the condition that the seventh day would be devoted to praise Him. Through their prayers, under transcendental contemplation ( generally in uncanny houses consecrated to a superior order ), disciples dream of another world in which misery and suffering, as much as slavery and poverty, would

be replaced by eternal happiness, freedom and leisure. An endless Sunday without material needs as a prize for a decent mortal life, which sounds like a promising denial for many, perhaps for too many.

A rather pragmatic argument, instead, maintains that weekends were invented to consume the goods and benefits produced by the same factories ( namely public offices, corporations, shops, universities, and so forth ) in which we work.

The capitalist model can actually be reduced to the following brutal simplicity : we are supposed to work, to work really hard, in order to earn enough money not only to cover our basic living costs ( to pay for roof and food ) but mostly to be spent on the products that the same system dangles in front of our eyes, seductively framed by pledges of instant happiness ( which by definition exceeds our basic needs ). That is to say, during the week we make money by getting tired in a labor chain for the production of things, and during the weekend we spend that money buying those same things under the illusion that we are freely enjoying our leisure time.

Self Service Halfway between the biological and the economical argument lies the perverse idea that the necessary rest away from working time and space has been carefully orchestrated ( by those same obscure forces of the market ) to improve the productivity when back at work. In those terms, leisure is not an end in itself but merely a means for labor to be more efficient.

Die Natur entdecken, um sich selbst zu finden Die chilenische Landschaftsarchitektin Teresa Møller möchte mit ihren Arbeiten dem Leben neue Bedeutung geben.

Die in Santiago ansässige Gestalterin versteht ihre Arbeit nicht als ästhetisches Handwerk. Sie möchte Alternativen zur von ihr als problematisch empfundenen urbanen Leistungsgesellschaft anbieten. Der Essay stellt mehrere ihrer herausragenden Arbeiten vor, erklärt die zugrunde liegenden Konzepte und beleuchtet an ihnen die Haltung der Landschaftsarchitektin. Møller möchte, dass die Menschen in ihren Landschaftsgestaltungen unmittelbare Naturerfahrungen und damit auch Erkenntnisse sammeln können – über ihre Umwelt, aber auch über sich selbst.

Herausragend Kraft des Unsichtbaren Casa Poli, kauernd auf den Klippen über dem tosenden Meer, Radić’ Casa Prisma + Habitación Terraza im mystisch nebligen Wald von Coinguillio oder Germán del Sols Tierra Patagonia Hotel thronend am türkisen See vor der Silhouette der Torres del Paine – diese und viele weitere chilenische Bauwerke wären auch unabhängig von ihrer malerischen Lage architektonische Meisterwerke. Doch erst ihre pittoreske Einbettung in die Natur hat dafür gesorgt, dass sich ihre Abbilder in den Medien viral verbreitet haben und international zu kollektiven Sehnsuchtsorten geworden sind. Ein Heft über herausragende Architektur in Chile wäre also unvollständig, würden nicht auch zeitgenössische Landschaftsgestaltungen thematisiert. Wer nun spontan einwendet, dass doch bei den meisten berühmten Bauwerken aus dem Andenstaat gerade die Absenz von Freiraumgestaltungen den eigentlichen Reiz ausmache, ist eingeladen, noch einmal genauer hinzusehen und mit auf eine Entdeckungsreise zu gehen. Tatsächlich wurde die Umgebung oftmals nur minimal angepasst, um Zufahrten und Wege anzulegen. Oder es wurden dezente Übergangsflächen zwischen den Innen- und Aussenräumen etabliert oder zurückhaltend Aufenthaltsorte in den umliegenden Freiräumen gestaltet. Ab und an wurden aber auch Orte so subtil « neu erfunden », dass die Landschaftsgestaltung schon fast natürlicher wirkt als die überformte Wildnis.

Als die Redaktion zur Vorbereitung des Heftes im März 2019 durch Chile reiste, fragten wir unsere Gastgeberinnen und Begleiter: « Wo finden wir die besten zeitgenössischen Freiraumgestaltungen? » Beinahe einstimmig wurde uns geraten, Punta Pite aufzusuchen – eine Abfolge von Plattformen, Wegen und Treppen an der felsigen Pazifikküste nahe Papudo.

An diesem Projekt – gestaltet von der Landschaftsarchitektin Teresa Møller – liesse sich besonders gut die sensible Balance ablesen, die chilenische Architektinnen und Landschaftsgestalter zwischen Gebäuden und Natur, zwischen Überformen und Unberührt-Lassen, zwischen Präsenz und Sich-Zurücknehmen etabliert hätten. Wir verabredeten uns also mit Teresa Møller, um das Projekt kennenzulernen. Von Punta Pite verzaubert suchten wir einige Tage später auch das Tierra Atacama in San Pedro auf. Für dieses Hotel hat Møller die grossen Aussenanlagen gestaltet – als Hybrid aus Garten und Park. Die Hotelgäste können dort en passant viel Wissenswertes über die landwirtschaftliche Nutzung ( sgeschichte ) der Oase von San Pedro lernen.

Das Essenzielle bergen An diesen beiden immersiven Orten verstanden wir unmittelbar, warum Teresa Møller als eine der bedeutendsten zeitgenössischen Landschaftsarchitektinnen der Welt gilt.2 Sie

Into the Great Wide Open reagiert mit ihren Arbeiten auf die unterschiedlichen Orte und Aufgaben mit spezifischen Lösungen und hat dennoch – oder gerade deshalb – eine unverkennbar starke Handschrift ent­ wickelt. Teresa Møller nimmt sich Zeit, das jeweils Charismatische der Orte zu entdecken, es durch ihre Interventionen und Gestaltungen hervorzuheben oder mitunter überhaupt erst sichtbar zu machen. Vorgefundenes und Modifiziertes fügen sich dabei zu einem neuen selbstverständlichen Ganzen. Und doch ist beim aufmerksamen Hinsehen meist ablesbar, was von den Kräften der Natur geformt und was gestaltet wurde.

Teresa Møller ist von der Kraft und Magie des Einfachen überzeugt. Diesen Fokus beim Gestalten begründet sie ökonomisch und ökologisch: Ihre Projekte sollen möglichst geringe Mengen an Ressourcen verbrauchen, wenig graue Energie verschleissen und günstig sein, indem – wenn immer möglich – am Ort vorhandene Materialien und Pflanzen eingebunden werden.

Diese Wertschätzung hat Teresa Møller in ihren Studien- und Lernjahren entwickelt. Bis 1985 hat sie an der INCACEA in Chile Landschaftsarchitektur studiert, wo unter anderem der renommierte Landschaftsarchitekt Juan Grimm ihr Lehrer war. 1989 ging sie nach New York, um im dortigen botanischen Garten weitere Kenntnisse zu sammeln. Noch im selben Jahr zog es Theresa Møller wieder nach Santiago, wo sie seitdem ihr eigenes Büro führt. Aktuell arbeiten zehn Partner und Mitarbeiter im Studio. Sie hat zahlreiche Projekte realisieren können – vom Seenland im Süden Chiles bis zur Atacama-Wüste im Norden.

Inspirierende Vielfalt Teresa Møller betont immer wieder, wie wichtig die verschiedenen Landschaftsräume des 4 200 Kilometer langen südamerikanischen Landes mit seinen unterschiedlichen Klimata, Geologien und Vegetationen für sie als Inspirationsquelle sind: Die mediterran anmutende Mitte mit ihren rollenden Hügeln und Weinfeldern; die scheinbar endlose, meist schroffe Küste zum Pazifik mit seinem kühlen, nährstoffreichen Wasser – Richtung Patagonien sich auflösend in tausende von Inseln und Fjorde, mit ewigem Eis, belebt von zahllosen Fischen, Vögeln und Robben; im Osten die gewaltige Kette der Anden mit Vulkanen und hohen Bergen, in denen Vacuñas herumstreifen und am Himmel Kondore kreisen; die Regenwälder, Seen und heissen Quellen im Süden; und die Atacama-­ Wüste – die trockenste Region der Welt mit ausserirdisch an­ mutenden Gesteinsformationen, Salzpfannen und Geysiren.

Auch Modifizierungen des Terrains und der Vegetation durch landwirtschaftliche Nutzungen sind wichtige Bezugspunkte für ihre Arbeit – seien dies archäologische Funde oder aktiv genutzte Strukturen.

Spätestens seit den 1990er-Jahren sind die zahlreichen aufsehenerregenden chilenischen Neubauten – Villen, Hotels, Restaurants und Weingüter – aus den Architekturmedien nicht mehr wegzudenken. Die meisten von ihnen wirken subtil und überzeugend in die Landschaftsräume integriert.3 Unweigerlich fragt sich der Betrachter: Wurden die Konzepte dem jeweiligen Ort angepasst oder hat die Analyse des Ortes die Architektur hervorgebracht ? Bei zahlreichen Villen geht es vor allem darum, den Bewohnern ein erhabenes Panorama zu bieten; sie sind Plattformen, Belvedere oder Schutzbauten.

Zugleich vernetzen sie und laden ein, in die Landschaft hinaus zu gehen, Wiesen, Felsen und Waldböden zu betreten und sich der Witterung auszusetzen. Die Vegetation läuft unmittelbar an den Häusern vorbei, durch sie oder unter ihnen hindurch.

Bei den Aussenraumgestaltungen geht es meist ebenfalls um ein Vermitteln, ein Hineinführen – sei dies in Nutzgärten oder in die « Wildnis ».4 Teresa Møller hat dieses Bild einer innigen Synthese von Bauen und urwüchsiger Landschaft in Chile mitgeprägt – sei es durch eigene Projekte oder im Rahmen von Kollaborationen mit führenden Architektinnen wie Mathias Klotz, Cecilia Puga und Alejandro Aravena.5

3 Aus westeuropäischer Sicht würde man den Boom von Wochenendhäusern in Chile als Zersiedelung verurteilen. Doch hat der Versuch, die dünn besiedelten Regionen zu bevölkern oder zumindest die Abwanderung zu stoppen, dort eine mehr als 150 Jahre lange Tradition. Da die dünn besiedelten Regionen ­häufig Gegenstand von Kriegen mit den Nachbarstaaten waren, hofft man, dass eine Besiedelung die territorialen Ansprüche zu untermauern hilft. Da zudem wie fast überall immer mehr ­Menschen in die Städte – allen voran Santiago – abwandern, kann der Tourismus und das Zweithaus-Business zumindest ein gewisses Mass an Arbeitsplätzen in den dünn besiedelten ­Gebieten erhalten oder schaffen.

4 Die angesprochenen Villen und viele als robuste Lodges inszenierte Hotels in den Nationalparks tragen eine Faszination und Demut vor der Wildnis und den Kräften der Natur zur Schau, die den ­Betrachter fasziniert. Sie wirken harmlos, liebe- und respektvoll.

Doch muss man sich auch der politischen Subkontexte und deren Tragweite bewusst sein. Weil sie sich als Pionierobjekte in einer menschenleeren, unkultivierten Wildnis darstellen, wird indirekt behauptet, dass es dort keine menschliche Kultur gäbe oder ­gegeben habe, bis die meist europäisch-stämmigen Wochenendler sie zu kultivieren begonnen haben. Dies ist problematisch, da der gesamte Raum westlich der Anden besiedelt war, als die ­Spanier die Region ab dem 16. Jahrhundert peu à peu aufzurollen be­gannen und in einen Teil der Kolonie Peru verwandelten. Von der ­Atacama im Norden bis Feuerland im Süden, wenn an manchen Orten auch nur dünn, lebten dort verschiedene indigene Ethnien.

Vielerorts wurden sie von den Eroberern bekämpft, verfolgt, ­systematisch vertrieben und ermordet. Die Mapuche beispielsweise, die derzeit vor allem südlich des Bio-Bio-Flusses leben, kämpfen bis heute vergeblich für einen unabhängigen Staat.

Seeing with New Eyes Germán del Sol’s Buildings in Remote Areas and Extreme Climatic Zones Chile has a territory stretching over 4 270 kilometers from north to south – from the Atacama Desert, known as one of the driest deserts in the world, to Patagonia in the extreme arctic south of South America, with its huge glaciers and characteristic jagged mountains. For Germán del Sol, architecture is a medium offering people the possibility to see sublime aspects of extreme nature with new eyes. In his poetic essay, he writes about the inspirations underlying two of his projects : the explora Atacama hotel in the Atacama Desert and the Remota Lodge in Patagonia.

Remoteness A hotel in a distant and quiet place can be a good location for travelers to rest while wandering around. It can offer inspiration and relaxation for experiencing the uniqueness of its environment. This can certainly be said about the explora Atacama hotel ( 1998 ), which my architecture office had the honor and pleasure to plan and build.

Architecture can make the natural and cultural life of the Atacama Desert hospitable, because it is able to reveal a meaningful inside. It changes visitors’ points of view and helps them to see the “same familiar things” that they already know and care for – but with new eyes, as Marcel Proust said in a well-known aphorism. Traveling should open new perspectives on our shared human condition, as is the case when beholding the pre-Columbian Nazca Lines in southern Peru.

San Pedro de Atacama is a cultivated oasis of 1 700 hectares in the very arid north of Chile that has been inhabited for more than 3 000 years. The village is formed of several dispersed settlements, or neighborhoods, called ayllus, which are in fact small oases used for agriculture. They are the most ­common and traditional form of community in the Andes region – and are still popular forms of settlement among the Quechua and Aymara peoples.

In the 16th century, San Pedro became a colonial town.

The Spanish transformed an existing neighborhood into the Ayllu Conde Duque, which is shaped like a square, subdivided by streets in a grid pattern and has a plaza with a church and the town hall at its center.

The explora hotel is located some distance from the colonial town ( about one kilometer away ), thereby creating a new Atacameño ayllu. In so doing, it revives the old tradition of pre-Columbian American villages south of the Rio Grande. The buildings of such villages stand loosely grouped on a big empty public space, establishing multiple relations among them and with nature. Having said this, the differences to European concepts of towns are evident. In the latter, all the buildings are related to urban streets instead of creating a place of their own in the midst of the countryside or nature.

Catching the Spirit Our architectural approach at the explora hotel was less about relating to a local and traditional urban typology, and more about reviving unique qualities of life in Atacama and introducing them to visitors by using the medium of architecture. To represent this artistically, one has to follow the spirit of these towns more than their form, and repeat their open attitude to create a place where life can be lived at ease. This spirit determines life in Atacama today.

In this case, form follows life. Life in Atacama is lived mostly outdoors. Farmers and shepherds spend their days working in bright sunlight in a very dry environment. They long for water and shade in the same way as do the region’s 50 000 annual visitors.

Water runs through irrigation ditches in the fields around the hotel and crosses a plaza and terraces. Shady spaces between roofs and concrete buildings create a temperate feeling using soft shades under big eaves that induce the wind to cross.

After a day spent in the sun, the soft light of the interior that comes in washing the walls, or through deep skylights, inspires visitors to stay and inhabit the place. An inclined concrete beam extends over the pillars, forming the undulating or waved lines of the façades, reflects the sunlight coming through long slats in the upper roof, and washes across the scented wooden planking made of Guaitecas cypress. The slightly curved ceiling disperses the light equally throughout the interior to avoid dark, dead spaces. The discontinuous pattern of walls and flights of stairs make a vibrant sequence of light and shade. The curved lines of the buildings add to this progression by inviting the eyes or the body to follow them.

Despite being massive, the walls are not experienced as direct obstacles, becoming instead an elusive limit.

Atacama is elusive in many ways. Its vastness is impossible to embrace. Its people, who make the most out of scarce resources, have survived more than 3 000 years, all the while continuously adapting to foreigners and climate changes.

Guestrooms are raised 1.5 meters above ground level to gain a bit of independence and privacy from life in the immediate vicinity – to take a nap, for instance, with open curtains while enjoying a view out over the whole oasis, the mountains and the plains that stretch out to invisible high plains beyond the horizon.

Interior and Exterior Passages The long, uninterrupted window is a cut in the exterior wall that maintains the unity of the building – a continuous one – and spares one the specifics of ever knowing the number of rooms or the location of the bathrooms, to name just a few unimportant details that would otherwise diminish the sense of wholeness. The corridor with its curved lines, with its generous eaves that project out more than three meters on average, gives enough space to the guest rooms’ low and narrow doors that you may never see many of them simultaneously.
