TONIGHT’S MATCH PRESENTED BY

vs. Tonight’s home opener marks the beginning of the second North American Soccer League season at the Jacksonville Armada’s home port, Community First Park at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville and another exciting year of professional soccer on the First Coast. Following an electric and lengthy preseason that saw exhilarating wins over Major League Soccer opposition Philadelphia Union and Orlando City, a preseason road victory over tonight’s opponent Miami FC and areas of improvement against NASL newcomers Rayo OKC and red-hot New York Red Bulls, the focus has now turned to the long road ahead. All the exciting matchday traditions remain intact as the team takes the pitch tonight. As always, it will be easy to know when the Armada players find the back of the net. Prior to every home match and after every Armada goal scored, the cannons will be fired. Just before the teams enter the pitch for team introductions, the Armada’s biggest nautical supporter, Squid Vicious, is released in stunning fashion casting a shadow over the opposition and showing its eight-legged support for the ‘‘Boys in Blue.’’ A representative from Armada FC partner Winn-Dixie will have the privilege of raising the Armada FC flag high above the pitch immediately preceding the singing of the National Anthem to signal the start of the 2016 Armada FC season opener. COASTAL CUP SHOWDOWN The Armada will begin its home campaign against a freshly minted Coastal Cup rival in Miami FC. While the two share a limited history, there is sure to be no shortage of tension out on the pitch. In the clubs’ only previous meeting, the Armada pulled out of Dade County with a 2-1 preseason victory against their Sunshine State competition at St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens. Helmed by former Italian International and Serie A star Alessandro Nesta, Miami also took part in preseason action at Jacksonville’s Patton Park in early March, playing to a 1-1 draw with Charleston on March 3 and downing Tulsa, 2-0, on March 5. The club has several notable names on its roster, including Honduran midfielder and former English Premier Leaguer Wilson Palacios, NASL modern era all-time leading goal scoring forward Pablo Campos, former Ottawa Fury defender Mason Trafford and former Armada goalkeeper David Sierra. The stakes are high and the energy will be pulsing throughout Community First Park as the Armada looks for yet another positive result in its home opener.

TECHNICAL STAFF HEAD COACH/TECHNICAL DIRECTOR TONY MEOLA

Legendary former U.S. Men’s National Team and MLS goalkeeper Tony Meola was named the Jacksonville Armada FC Head Coach and Technical Director on Nov. 24, 2015. Meola has been a prominent figure in U.S. Soccer since he stormed onto the scene in 1987 when he helped lead the U-20 National Team at the 1987 FIFA World Youth Championship in goal. Following a two-year college career at the University of Virginia, where he was a two-time All-American under the guidance of U.S. Soccer icon Bruce Arena, Meola embarked on an illustrious international career in 1988 with the U.S. Men’s National Team, which included three FIFA World Cups (1999, 1994, and 2002).

ASSISTANT COACH JIM ROONEY

Tony Meola named former MLS All-Star and U.S. National Team U-17 assistant coach Jim Rooney as his top management on Nov. 25, 2015. A native of the Bronx, New York, Rooney was a midfielder who played with Meola at the Long Island Rough Riders in 1995 and at the New York/New Jersey MetroStars in 1998 and 1999. Rooney made 116 career appearances in MLS with the MetroStars, Miami Fusion and New England Revolution.

ASSISTANT COACH MARK LOWRY

Tony Meola added Mark Lowry to his staff as an Assistant Coach on Dec. 30, 2015. Lowry, who served as an Interim Assistant Coach under Eric Dade in the Armada’s final seven weeks of the 2015 North American Soccer League Fall Season, came to Jacksonville following three years as a coach at the Orlando City Soccer Club’s U.S. Soccer Development Academy program. He also served as a coach for Armada FC youth development partner Jacksonville FC’s U.S. Soccer development program.

ASSISTANT TECHNICAL DIRECTOR NATHAN WALTER

Nathan Walter has been with the Jacksonville Armada FC since the club’s beginning stages, joining in 2013 as employee No. 2. He originally served as the Director of Soccer for Sunshine Soccer Agency, the holding corporation of the Armada FC and then took on the role of Director of Soccer Operations in 2014 once the club began its official NASL operations. Walter also served as an interim assistant coach in the last eight weeks of the 2015 NASL Fall Season. In December 2015, Walter was promoted to the club’s Assistant Technical Director.

TONY’S NOTES Openers are always fun. There is always a different sense of energy and excitement. You can’t replicate opening day. It doesn’t matter what sport it is. And it doesn’t hurt that we are taking on an in-state rival with a respectable coaching staff in Miami FC. I love games like this, and games like this are very important to me, but I am just a side story to the whole thing. I said this when I played and I will continue to say it: I don’t think any of this is about the coach ever. There is no reason to think otherwise now. I just put them in a shape and send them off. I want everyone to come to this stadium to see these players and support this team. Everyone involved is part of it, but ultimately it is the players who are going to make or break this thing. We need the support. That is what gets you through games and gets you over the top sometimes. The city of Jacksonville has done a great job of supporting the Armada so far. I can tell you this: we will do our part and control all the things that we can control. Hopefully, we can get some breaks, but I have known that with the support of our fans, things will go well this season. Thank you for coming out to this evening’s match!

- Head Coach & Technical Director, Tony Meola

GAME ON! TONY MEOLA’S FIRST HOME NASL FIXTURE KICKS OFF TONIGHT It has been nearly six months since former U.S. Men’s National Team and Major League Soccer goalkeeper Tony Meola took the helm at the Armada FC as first team head coach and technical director. A preseason ripe with goals, excitement and growing opportunities has come and passed and Meola stands ready to take up arms and battle the best in the North American Soccer League. As he steps foot out onto the pitch tonight, a new page in an illustrious career will begin to take shape. However, even in the face of opportunity, Meola remains focused on the task at hand. Q: We just wrapped up a fairly long and eventful preseason. How do feel coming out of it? “Overall, it has been a very positive preseason. Part of the mission was learning about each other. Whether it was the coaching staff learning about the players, the players learning how the coaching staff operates and where we are as a whole, I think we have learned about each other quite a bit. It has been a long preseason. There have been periods of time where it was really good and there have been times we have had to turn and make corrections on things, but that is something that I am going to find for the rest of my coaching career. I’m sure everyone has gone through that. All and all it has been a very positive preseason.” 4.15.2016 ARMADA MATCHDAY

Q: Expectations for the regular season? “My expectations are that we compete all the time. We will be in games and there might be periods where we play really well and can figure out how we lost points that night and there will be times when we play very poorly and we can’t figure out how we gained points. That is one thing that we learned through the preseason. Ultimately, it is about getting results. The tough part was taking a team that finished last, although we have changed out about half the team, we are working on a better mentality. We have preached it all preseason. We preached growing as a group and growing as a family. There is going to be growing pains, and we are fully aware of that. I think the players are aware of that. We have to eliminate the big swings of emotion. When we have peaks, we can’t get too high and when we hit valleys, we can’t get too low. We want consistency in our reactions. Consistency in the fact that if it doesn’t go well one week the season isn’t over. We just have to be level-headed in the way that we go about things. We have to look at this as a marathon rather than a sprint. That is what we have preached. We talk everyday about playing in November. We won’t get to November on the 10th of April. There may be unlucky plays, bad results and there may be a call that goes against you that would change the face of a game. We have to deal with all of it. The ones that don’t deal with it feel like it is happening to them constantly. The ones that deal with it well brush off a bad game and get on to the next one. That is where we have to be.”

Tony Meola has been a prominent figure in U.S.

Men’s National Team. The Kearny, N.J., native earned 100 caps for the USMNT, which is tied for 14th all-time overall and third among goalkeepers, and was on the squad for the 1990, 1994 and 2002 FIFA World Cups. His 37 wins and 32 clean sheets rank third all-time in U.S. Soccer history.

Q: You have added a lot of new talent to the roster. What were you looking for in the players? “Bring in guys with strong character. We have talked about playing for the long haul here. We talk about playing in November. We have to get through the first part of the season. Either way, if we win games early on, there is no reason to get to excited and same goes the other way if we lose games we don’t want to get to down. There is talent here and we will put it together. Some nights you will play a great game where it doesn’t quite work for you and other nights you play terrible and find a way to win. We have find ways to balance those things.”

Q: How is Jacksonville treating you? “I have finally been able to see a little bit of the city. I love it so far. The people are great. Going into the grocery store, I think no one is even going to notice me and then the cashier says, ‘Good luck coach.’ That kind of stuff shows me that the fans are really in-tune here with the team. However, we have to earn their support. Year two is difficult in any organization. It’s not exclusive to here in Jacksonville. We have to do that by getting results. We have a great office staff. (It’s) a great group of people that are doing a great job, and I know it will continue to grow. We are going to be part of that growth.”

‘PEPP TALK’ WITH

COLE PEPPER

THE START OF A RIVALRY? One season and one game into their existence, the Armada has yet to develop a clearly defined rival. Both Tampa Bay and Fort Lauderdale have potential, as do the Cosmos (who doesn’t look at New York as a rival?), but that one clear team that Armada players, coaches and supporters revel in beating still remains to emerge. Perhaps that rivalry emerges as the Armada kicks off its home schedule in the NASL tonight against league newcomer Miami FC. Clearly, Miami shares a geographic rival in South Florida with Fort Lauderdale and it came into the league this season along with its expansion brethren, Rayo OKC. But it won’t take long to see if Jacksonville and Miami develop a rivalry. Here’s why: • Geography – With four NASL teams now playing in Florida, there are bound to be some rivalries that become more heated than others, but I suspect by the end of this season, there will be plenty for all of the Florida teams to talk about. Add to that the expectation that opposing supporters will travel to the other teams within the state, and the rivalry figures to be ramped up. • Games of importance – So far, Miami and Jacksonville haven’t played in any games that would impact a championship. Perhaps a “state championship” would bring an increase in meaning. Once these clubs begin to compete for titles, then the rivalry will become more heated. • Memorable Moments – What were the most memorable moments last year for the Armada? The opening day win (because it was the first and featured a record-setting goal by Jemal Johnson just 12 seconds in), the draw in New York on the final week of the Spring Season and, you could argue, the victory over the Cosmos at Community First Park. Memorable moments alone don’t make a rivalry (there isn’t a lot of heat between the Armada and FC Edmonton, the opening day victim), but it sure can add fuel to the fire. Tonight will be just the start of things between the Armada and Miami, but I have a feeling things could get interesting in a hurry.

THE VISITORS MIAMI FC

NEW TO THE LEAGUE, BUT NOT NEW TO THE GAME Founded in 2015 and admitted to the NASL as the league’s 12th team, the Miami FC isn’t that much younger than the Jacksonville Armada FC. The match will be Miami’s third in the regular season. The Miami FC is co-owned by Italian businessman Riccardo Silva and former AC Milan defender Paolo Maldini. Maldini’s own expansive soccer experience was used in helping select the roster. Another strong addition to the club is head coach Alessandro Nesta. The Italian-raised former defender played soccer over the course of 20 years, making more than 400 Serie A appearances and earning 78 caps for the Italian National Team. Nesta appeared in three FIFA World Cups and the 1996 Olympics. The brand, colors and logo of the Miami FC were created to represent and pay homage to the lively and multi-cultural aspects of the city. Of course, no soccer team would be complete without a group of die-hard fans. The club already has a strong fan base with the formation of the Dade Brigade, Miami FC’s local supporter group.

FLORIDA’S NEWEST IN-STATE RIVALRY Hailing from the same state as the Armada, as well as from the same league, a rivalry between the two teams playing tonight is

sure to become more established as the seasons go on. That rivalry may have already started during both team’s preseason match against one another this past March. The Armada came out on top at that game, so the chances of the Miami FC looking for revenge tonight is surely high. Plus Miami FC is a new entrant into the Florida Derby, which is an annual competition amongst Florida NASL teams Fort Lauderdale Strikers, Jacksonville Armada and Tampa Bay Rowdies. The team with the most points in Florida Derby competitions at the end of the NASL regular season wins the Coastal Cup.

MIAMI’S HAND-PICKED ROSTER The Miami FC has created quite the roster upon the beginning of their opening season. One of those key players is forward Pablo Campos. No stranger to scoring goals, Campos is the all-time leading goal scorer in the NASL. He netted four in the preseason, but prior to joining Miami, he played in various teams within the NASL. While playing with the Carolina RailHawks, Campos scored 12 goals. Midfielder Ariel Pedro Martinez is another dangerous playmaker on the Miami FC roster. While playing with the Cuban National Team, he scored 34 goals, including a hat-trick against Belize in 2013. Other additions to the roster include goalkeeper and Argentinian Mario Daniel Vega, former English Premier League midfielder Wilson Palacios, defender Adailton Jose Dos Santos Filho, and twin midfielders Calvin and Conner Rezende among several others. This game also brings forth a familiar face in goalkeeper David Sierra, who played for the Armada in 2015.
