5.28.2016 ARMADA MATCHDAY
WEDNESDAY’S MATCH vs.
Presented by:
Wednesday night’s matchup marks the final of three 2016 meetings between the Fort Lauderdale Strikers and the Jacksonville Armada FC. The fleet has yet to top the South Florida foe this season, drawing 1-1 in April and a late 1-0 defeat in July, both taking place in Fort Lauderdale. Wednesday’s match marks the first time the Strikers have visited Community First Park since Nov. 1, 2015, the final match of the 2015 regular season. Interim head coach Mark Lowry will be looking for his team to capitalize on the home field advantage and grab three points and move up in both the NASL and Coastal Cup standings. The theme of the evening is also Business Night. The Armada FC will highlight local area businesses and host an exclusive networking event in Sky Deck 4 featuring a panel discussion about business in Jacksonville with Armada FC owner Mark Frisch, JAX Chamber President and CEO Daniel Davis and Community First Credit Union President and CEO John Hirabayashi. The Nonprofit of the Match is Mission One Million. Join the 904 in losing One Million Pounds! Visit www.904missiononemillion.com today to make your pledge!
SATURDAY’S MATCH vs.
Presented by:
Saturday evening’s opponent, Minnesota United FC, has only visited Jacksonville once before and may be the second to last time the two teams meet before Minnesota leaves the North American Soccer League for Major League Soccer next season. The Loons clawed their way back into a 3-3 draw that was easily one of the most entertaining matches in Community First Park’s short history. The Armada FC has teamed up with the Jacksonville Jaguars for Football Night in Jacksonville. The Armada will have a special tailgate in Lot X following the match and prior to the Jaguars kickoff against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers game at 7:30 p.m. The Nonprofit of the Match is Police Athletic League of Jacksonville. For more than 40 years, JaxPAL has been providing a safe place for children who live in some of the city’s toughest neighborhoods to go after school. All the exciting match day traditions remain intact as the team takes the pitch tonight. As always, it will be easy to know when the Armada FC players find the back of the net. Prior to every home match and after every Armada FC goal scored, the cannons will be fired. Just before the teams enter the pitch for team introductions, the Armada FC’s biggest nautical supporter, Squid Vicious, is released in stunning fashion casting a shadow over the opposition and showing its eight-legged support for the ‘‘Boys in Blue.’’

5.28.2016 ARMADA MATCHDAY
TECHNICAL STAFF INTERIM HEAD COACH MARK LOWRY Mark Lowry was added as an Assistant Coach on Dec. 30, 2015. Lowry, who served as an Interim Assistant Coach under Eric Dade in the Armada’s final seven weeks of the 2015 North American Soccer League Fall Season, came to Jacksonville following three years as a coach at the Orlando City Soccer Club’s U.S. Soccer Development Academy program. He also served as a coach for Armada FC youth development partner Jacksonville FC’s U.S. Soccer development program.
TECHNICAL DIRECTOR NATHAN WALTER Nathan Walter has been with the Jacksonville Armada FC since the club’s beginning stages, joining in 2013 as employee No. 2. He originally served as the Director of Soccer for Sunshine Soccer Agency, the holding corporation of the Armada FC and then took on the role of Director of Soccer Operations in 2014 once the club began its official NASL operations. Walter also served as an interim assistant coach in the last eight weeks of the 2015 NASL Fall Season. In December 2015, Walter was promoted to the club’s Assistant Technical Director.
ASSISTANT COACH PAT CANNON A native of Jacksonville Beach, Cannon stepped up from his role as the Head Coach of Armada FC U-23. Cannon also served as an assistant coach in the final seven weeks of the 2015 season. His reputation in the soccer community in Jacksonville exceeds itself. Serving as the Head Coach of the Jacksonville United (predecessor to the Armada FC U-23) he had a very successful run in the NPSL, highlighted by a 2011 league championship. The team also had multiple players go on to the professional ranks. Cannon has also served as the Boys Director of Coaching at the Armada FC Youth Academy, as well as an assistant coach at both Jacksonville University and the University of North Florida. He Studied Environmental Biology at University of West Florida.
GOALKEEPER COACH DARYL SATTLER In a career spanning over 10 years, Sattler has played professionally with the NASL’s Atlanta Silverbacks, FC Tampa Bay (later Tampa Bay Rowdies), Minnesota United FC and the USL’s Wilmington Hammerheads. Prior to playing professionally he was named team MVP with USL PDL side the Nashville Metros, and was a member of the All Southern Conference team in 2003. In addition to his playing a career, Sattler has coached both collegiately and at the youth level, as Assistant Men’s Soccer Coach & Head Goalkeeper Coach at Lipscomb University in 2004 and at Jacksonville University for the Dolphins men’s soccer tea in 2006. He also served as Director of Goalkeeping at Armada FC youth partners Jacksonville FC in 2014 all awhile playing with NPSL side Jacksonville United FC to keep conditioned.

COACH’S NOTES Adversity is something that we all face throughout our life. This team that I have been privileged enough to work with for nearly a year now has been through a lot a lot of adversity in its short existence. However, I knew from the moment that I was brought onboard that I was a lucky individual because I was coming into a stellar organization. That feeling has not changed. I was privileged to be able to work with the previous coaching staff, and I intend on continuing to build on what we have already created here at the Armada. One benefit that I did not have last year when coming in was the familiarity factor. Both the team and I are already comfortable. I believe a comfortable player performs better. We are not going to reinvent the wheel. We are going to keep things simple for these players in terms of the tactics and strategy on the field. There has been a good foundation built already. We just need to find a way to build on that already and move forward as a club and a community. There are two things that have really affected us this season. The physical fatigue factor typically kicks in. The final 10 minutes of games are usually a bit harder. We have to be aware of that. The mental fatigue is another one. We need to find the belief that we can accomplish this. I know that we have the quality on our team to right the ship. My goal is to harvest that belief, the same belief that you fantastic supporters of the Armada bring to every single match. Thank you for supporting the club and attending today’s match.
- Interim Head Coach, Mark Lowry 13

THE ICE MAN COMETH #8 PEKKA LAGERBLOM It was clear from the beginning of the season that the addition of Finnish midfielder Pekka Lagerblom to the Armada FC roster was going to bring a leader to the first team. Despite an early injury in the preseason, Lagerblom has managed to lead, even from the sideline. With the remainder of season ahead, Lagerblom is looking to stir the Armada to victory and build toward a successful future. Q: Every time we ask your teammates, “Who is the most fit on the team?” they say Pekka. How do stay so conditioned? “It is all about the passion that I have for my profession. It is not as much as an obligation to me as much as a fun thing. It is the reason that I want to play closer to 40 years old. It is my personal set of goals that push me to take care of my body, eat right, sleep right and do the extra work.” Q: Only several weeks after arriving in Jacksonville, you injured your Achilles tendon. How did you recover so fast? “Only a couple days after the injury, I found myself sitting at home knowing that I am not going to be able to play for two or three months. I knew that injuries take time. I decided to take my inspiration from several motivational books. Also, (I learned) from my studies to be a personal trainer. It helped me think less about missing soccer and more 8.17 & 8.20.2016 ARMADA MATCHDAY
about rehabilitating the best that I could. It was good motivation to set the plan for the days. Being around the team was very helpful. I recommend it to any player that is recovering. Don’t distance yourself from the team. Continue to be a part of the team even though you cannot train. I would do my rehab on the field while they trained to remind myself and everyone that I was working to get back into it. It is motivating to your teammates as well to help them train.” Q: A lot of players that come over say that the speed is different here in the States versus playing in Europe. How have you adapted to the NASL play? “Well, personally, I really like what I have seen in the NASL; MLS as well. There are great players out here. There is a lot of fire within. I think that there is a great opportunity for the NASL to expand at the rate that it is going. “I CAN SEE THE FIRE WITHIN, STARTING WITH (THE OWNER) MARK (FRISCH), TO EVERYONE IN THE FRONT OFFICE AND DOWN TO THE FIELD ON GAME DAY WITH THE FANS. THE PASSION TO BUILD THIS CLUB IN THIS CITY IS ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC.”
Soccer is a running sport. When you watch the top teams in the (UEFA) Champions League, you will see that they run hard the entire game. However, the individual quality differs. The technical ability and finesse is better in Europe, which makes the game smoother. That makes the difference. It is not just about running, it is about the quality of the players. The speed comes with the ball movement in Europe. Here the speed come from the players.” Q: Were you surprised by the play here? “Actually not. I have talked with other players from Finland who have
#8 Pekka Lagerblom
A versatile and experienced midfielder, Lagerblom brings more than 10 years of European league experience to the Armada, which includes Bundesliga and German Cup titles in 2004 with Werder Bremen. A native of Lahti, Finland, he was also a member of the Finnish national team from 2003-06, recording 12 caps. Lagerblom comes to Jacksonville after playing with his hometown club, FC Lahti of the top Finnish division, Viekkausliiga, in 2015.
played here in the States. The speed of the game is good, the quality is good most of the time. I am looking forward to playing here for as long as I can.” Q: A lot of transitions since you arrived here to play with the Armada FC between injuries and coaching changes. What keeps you motivated about making an impact with this club? “Although the Armada is a very new club, I can see the fire within, starting with (the owner) Mark (Frisch), to everyone in the front office and down to the field on game day with the fans. The passion to build this club in this city is absolutely fantastic. I think many of the guys on the team including me are getting those sparks. We wanted to be a part of the team and help build a successful team. It is infectious.
Lagerblom Book Club When Pekka is not exercising his brawn out on the pitch, he is working out his brain in his books. Always looking for motivation, Pekka has compiled a list of his favorite inspirational writings. Here are the top five on Pekka’s ‘‘must-read’’ list. 1. Mind Gym - Gary Mack/David Casstevens
In talking with everyone before I came, I saw a real opportunity to come make a difference and use my experience to help the younger players become better.
2. The School Of Greatness - Lewis Howes
I really have to thank our fans as well. From all of us on the team, it is truly tremendous to come out and see the support. Especially at the stadium.”
4. The Alchemist - Paulo Coelho
Q: What are your thoughts on working with the new coaching staff? “I am looking forward to working more with (interim head coach) Mark Lowry. He has lots of knowledge and lots of experience around soccer. He is very passionate about the game. So everything that I have seen so far would convince me that we are going to have a great run with Lowry, Pat (Cannon) and Daryl (Sattler) taking us forward.” 8.17 & 8.20.2016 ARMADA MATCHDAY

HOW WILL LOWRY ADAPT? Mark Lowry has begun his run as interim head coach of the Armada. What can we expect? Here are a few of my thoughts, arranged by height. 1. M ark is a serious student of the game-Lowry has earned his UEFA A License. That’s significant for a guy who is taking over as a head coach for the first time. That license is the one that coaches in the English Championship routinely have (there is one higher license, the Pro License, but that covers more about topics like signing players and administrating a Premier League club). He understand tactics and he also understands the Armada roster. 2. B ecause he has been in Jacksonville since last year, when the Armada made a coaching change at the end of the year, he knows the players and understands the league. As a former scout for in the Premier League, he has scouted the NASL and knows well the teams that the Armada will face over the last 3 months of the season. he players really like him. Now, I will admit that the assistant coach is 3. T often as popular as the backup quarterback until pressed into service, but I don’t think the promotion will change who Mark Lowry is. He’s a good guy who I think the players will respond to. Now for a few questions, because there are several to be answered: First, how will Lowry handle being a head coach for the first time ever? He’ll have some good help with Armada U-23 head coach Pat Cannon, who will serve as his assistant (along with former NASL goalkeeper Daryl Sattler). Second, what kind of approach will he take? I asked Lowry about his tactical philosophy and he said that for now, he will “keep things simple and build on what’s worked.” Sensible. Third, and this is a question for any coach with a large roster: how will he keep everybody happy? With 26 players who have played at least one game this year, there are going to be players who are left out of the matchday 18 that think they deserve inclusion. There are going to be players who don’t start who believe they deserve consideration for the starting XI. How Lowry handles that aspect of the team may be the biggest key to his success, and the largest factor in whether he has the “interim” title taken off his door at the end of the season.

THE VISITORS FORT LAUDERDALE STRIKERS
A BATTLE FOR THE ATLANTIC Another Coastal Cup battle will ensue this week as the Jacksonville Armada FC and the Fort Lauderdale Strikers meet for the final time this season. So far, the results have been a 1-1 draw on April 23 and a 1-0 Strikers win on July 30. This will also be the first time the Strikers visit the Bold City this year. Previous matches from the Armada’s inaugural season include three meetings in 2015, including two away contests (April 11 and Sept. 16) and one at home (Nov. 1). All three ended in Strikers victories. The Strikers currently sit at 12th place in the 2016 NASL Fall Season standings.
HISTORIC TRADITION The club goes back even further to 1977 when the original Strikers formed and played in the original North American Soccer League. Over the next 20 years, the Strikers went through various location and league changes until 1997 when the United States Interregional Soccer League side version of the Strikers folded. Almost 10 years later, the Strikers club known today was founded then as Miami FC. It wasn’t until 2011 that the owners paid homage to the original Fort Lauderdale team and renamed the team to what it is today. The Strikers are currently coached by Caio Zanardi.
The northern adversaries hail from the Land of 10,000 Lakes, calling Blaine, Minn. home and were founded in 2010, playing in the D2 Pro League. United FC made the move to the NASL in 2011 and began its first season with nine wins, nine draws and 10 losses and ended the season in sixth place. Throughout its time in the NASL, Minnesota has not gotten below the sixth spot in the standings, and since 2013 haven’t been below the fourth spot. Previous matchups for the Armada FC against the Loons have resulted in a 3-2 loss on May 23, 2015, a 4-0 loss on July 15, 2015 and a 3-3 draw on July 31, 2015. The Boys In Blue are looking to get their first win against the Loons this Saturday. The Loons are led by head coach Carl Craig.
