5.28.2016 ARMADA MATCHDAY
TONIGHT’S MATCH Presented by:
vs.
The Jacksonville Armada FC rolls back into town to face the always tough Carolina RailHawks. With both teams desperately on the hunt for points, the Armada is looking for the fire to ignite the cannon blast and energize Community First Park as the team takes the pitch this evening. Tonight is the Armada’s first Nonprofit Night, where a variety of local area nonprofits will be at the game and around the concourse at Community First Park allowing supporters to learn about and become involved in their cause. All the exciting match day traditions will commence as the team takes the pitch tonight. As always, it will be easy to know when the Armada finds the back of the net. Prior to every home match and after every Armada goal scored, the cannons will be fired. Just before the teams enter the pitch for team introductions, the Armada’s biggest nautical supporter, Squid Vicious, is released in stunning fashion casting a shadow over the opposition and showing its eight-legged support for the ‘‘Boys in Blue.’’
Carolina on the Mind Despite a fast start to the Spring Season, winning the first four fixtures out of the gate, the RailHawks have wrestled a bit to find their place heading into the Fall Season. With an all-time 2-1-1 series advantage over the Armada, Carolina has yet to score against Jacksonville this season, playing to a scoreless draw with the Armada on June 4 in Cary, N.C. The RailHawks have bolstered their roster over the past month, adding USL products James Moberg and Mickey Daly, Omar Bravo from Liga MX side Guadalajara, and striker Matt Fondy, who transferred from the Armada FC.

5.28.2016 ARMADA MATCHDAY
TECHNICAL STAFF HEAD COACH/TECHNICAL DIRECTOR TONY MEOLA
Legendary former U.S. Men’s National Team and MLS goalkeeper Tony Meola was named the Jacksonville Armada FC Head Coach and Technical Director on Nov. 24, 2015. Meola has been a prominent figure in U.S. Soccer since he stormed onto the scene in 1987 when he helped lead the U-20 National Team at the 1987 FIFA World Youth Championship in goal. Following a two-year college career at the University of Virginia, where he was a two-time All-American under the guidance of U.S. Soccer icon Bruce Arena, Meola embarked on an illustrious international career in 1988 with the U.S. Men’s National Team, which included three FIFA World Cups (1999, 1994, and 2002).
ASSISTANT COACH JIM ROONEY
Tony Meola named former MLS All-Star and U.S. National Team U-17 assistant coach Jim Rooney as his top management on Nov. 25, 2015. A native of the Bronx, New York, Rooney was a midfielder who played with Meola at the Long Island Rough Riders in 1995 and at the New York/New Jersey MetroStars in 1998 and 1999. Rooney made 116 career appearances in MLS with the MetroStars, Miami Fusion and New England Revolution.
ASSISTANT COACH MARK LOWRY
Tony Meola added Mark Lowry to his staff as an Assistant Coach on Dec. 30, 2015. Lowry, who served as an Interim Assistant Coach under Eric Dade in the Armada’s final seven weeks of the 2015 North American Soccer League Fall Season, came to Jacksonville following three years as a coach at the Orlando City Soccer Club’s U.S. Soccer Development Academy program. He also served as a coach for Armada FC youth development partner Jacksonville FC’s U.S. Soccer development program.
ASSISTANT TECHNICAL DIRECTOR NATHAN WALTER
Nathan Walter has been with the Jacksonville Armada FC since the club’s beginning stages, joining in 2013 as employee No. 2. He originally served as the Director of Soccer for Sunshine Soccer Agency, the holding corporation of the Armada FC and then took on the role of Director of Soccer Operations in 2014 once the club began its official NASL operations. Walter also served as an interim assistant coach in the last eight weeks of the 2015 NASL Fall Season. In December 2015, Walter was promoted to the club’s Assistant Technical Director.

TONY’S NOTES We are getting down to the grind, and I want to make it clear how important tonight’s game is. Since the beginning, I have said that I want us to go into every game with the same goal – to win games and gather points. While this goal is no different tonight than it has been any other night, we are in a position now that forces us to treat every single game as a must win. Tonight we face a team with that same mentality. That means we are going to have to claw, scrape and fight our way out of this match. Every ball we go for, we will have to win. Every shot needs to be on point. Most importantly, we will have to finish our chances to come out with a result. I know we have the ability to do this. I have seen it throughout the season. Not often enough, but I have seen it which gives me the knowledge that this is possible. The effort has definitely been there and will continue to pour in and hopefully the confidence will build as we get results. Clearly we are up against a very good team in Carolina. Coach Clarke is a stellar leader and has put together a quality squad. They attack very well and are organized. However, I also know that we can hold them. We have already done it once this season back in the beginning of June. We know that we are going to have to open up the field of play and exploit that. This brings me back to finishing our chances. When we create these, which I know we can, we must finish them. Thank you for supporting the Armada FC and attending tonight’s game. Hard work will always pay off in the long run.

KICKIN’ IT WITH KEVAN #19 KEVAN GEORGE Since joining the Jacksonville Armada FC at the beginning of the Spring Season, Kevan George has become an anchor in the midfield and humbly led his new fleet into battle. With 20 caps to his credit, the seasoned International also mans the midfield of the Trinidad and Tobago national team and brings subtle maturity to both of his teams. With much work ahead, George is determined to become a driving force in the Armada starting lineup. Q: What made you want to become a professional footballer? “Football (soccer) is by far the biggest sport in Trinidad and Tobago. My uncle was a player back home and I really wanted to replicate what he did. My love for the game started at a very young age, about when I was four or five years old.” Q: How much of an honor is it to play for your national team? “It is a huge honor. Playing for your country is like nothing else. You love wearing the badge for your club. It is very important and they pay your bills, but playing for the national team gives you a true sense of honor and pride to represent your own people. It is really a dream.” Q: After spending several years with 2015 MLS cup runner-up 8.6.2016 ARMADA MATCHDAY
Columbus Crew SC, what do think about the level of competition in the NASL? “It is fairly similar. The main difference is the tactical part of the game, week in and week out. The technical aspect of the game is a bit better in MLS. I can’t say that it is overall better, but there are a handful of teams in the MLS that play technically better than the teams in the NASL. Credit to the NASL; I was quite surprised by the level of competition we have experienced this season. There are a handful of NASL teams that would compete with and do really well in MLS.” “THIS RIGHT NOW IS A VERY GOOD EXERCISE FOR US. IT IS A TEST OF OUR MENTALITY OF THE CLUB” Q: Results are tough to come by in such a competitive league. What is the feeling when the Armada get those wins? “A release. It is such hard work. You can’t take a day off because you will get punished. Those wins that we do get, we cherish. It requires discipline and work to compete and we have to earn those results. It is a good feeling to win when do get one.” Q: What drives you? “Family – without a doubt. At the end of the day, who are you going to run to? You can’t go to the media. You can’t go to the coach because they aren’t your friends, they are your manager.
#19 KEVAN GEORGE.
Trinidad & Tobago International Kevan George came aboard the Armada FC to anchor the midfield only days before the kickoff of the 2015 season after spending four years with Major League Soccer side Columbus Crew, logging 1,344 minutes in 28 appearances and 11 starts during that time. He has earned 20 caps for the Trinidad and Tobago national team since 2013. Prior to being drafted 29th overall by the Crew in the second round of the 2012 MLS SuperDraft, George was a three-time All-Conference USA selection for NCAA Division I side University of Central Florida in Orlando. There he started 73 matches and finished with six goals and 16 assists.
That is business; at least that is my perspective. Family drives me. They brought me here. They always support me through thick and thin. I want to repay them for their unwavering support. My family lives in New Jersey, so they don’t get to come to many games. No matter what I know they are behind me and that is my motivation.” Q: Any message to the Armada FC supporters?
“Don’t lose faith. This is a very young club.” We have to realize that
soccer is not an ‘in the moment sport’ where you just pick up and win with a team. It is a process. If we want to build something for the long run, we have to go through these phases. However, if you are true supporters, like I know that Jacksonville Armada fans are, then you stick behind your team. And when those wins start coming, all the support will pay off. Trust me, I have seen this before.
This right now is a very good exercise for us. It is a test of our mentality of the club. Who will brake first? Who will throw out their hands and say I am out? You have to get battered sometimes. We will come out stronger on the other side.”

CHEF’S RECOMMENDATIONS When he is not holding down the midfield, Kevan loves to cook and his specialty is the Caribbean cuisine of his island homeland. Here are his top five favorite Trinidadian dishes: 1. Dumpling and stewed chicken 2. Rice with stewed fish - mainly salmon; we used barracuda back home. 3. Roti - West Indian dish popular in Trinidad and Tobago 4. Doubles - a little dough with chick peas and curry - one of the best dishes you will ever try 5. My father’s soup recipe - Family patented recipe. Top secret, can’t beat it

ARMADA DEFENSE IMPRESSIVE Although the spot on the table isn’t where Tony Meola intended, you have to hand it to the Armada for one aspect of the game: defense. Last season, the Armada surrendered three or more goal’s nine times. Nine times! This season, they have conceded 3 goals only once, a Wednesday night at the New York Cosmos. Only FC Edmonton has yet to concede three goals in NASL play this year. Some of that credit must go to the goalkeepers, first Miguel Gallardo, and since then, Sean Lewis. But defending is not just about the keeper. Just about everyone on the Armada backline has played well this year with only minimal lapses in performance. Chief among them is Tyler Ruthven. The centerback has not missed a single minute of action this year. He’s played next to Mechack Jerome, Beto Navarro and Karl Ouimette this year, but no matter who the combination, the Armada have proved to be a stingy, if not downright nasty group. The fullbacks and defensive midfielders are part of this conversation as well. Patrick Otte, Matt Bahner, Anthony Wallace and Bryan Burke have all logged time defending for the Armada and all had their moments. Perhaps it’s no surprise that in Meola’s first season as a head coach, the defending has been ahead of the attack. But now it’s time to change all of that. For all of the positive defensive numbers, the Armada must find the net to start winning games in bunches. It seems a simple thing: just score and you’ll win. Easier said then done, to be sure, but Jacksonville has the advantage of knowing exactly what’s missing from successful results. Once the goals start to come, the defense can rest.

THE VISITORS CAROLINA RAILHAWKS
THE TEN YEAR PLAN Out of the 12 teams in the North American Soccer League, only four have been with the league since it was revitalized in 2010. The Carolina RailHawks are one of those teams. Prior to the start of the second version of the NASL, the RailHawks played in the United Soccer League from 2006-2010. The RailHawks are owned Steve Malik, a medical industry entrepreneur who resides in Cary, N.C. and purchased the club in 2015. The Railhawks are embarking upon their 10th year of existence and in that time, they have made a name for themselves. The RailHawks finished with the best NASL regular season record in 2010 and 2011, in addition to an NASL postseason runner-up finish in 2010. Perhaps Carolina’s greatest achievement has been its 2007 run to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup semifinals. The Railhawks bear the colors orange, white and blue which was announced, along with their name and logo, on July 19, 2006, during halftime of the 2006 USL All-Star match.
2016 SPRING SEASON STATS

Northern Irishman and former international striker Colin Clarke, was chosen as the RailHawks’ head coach in 2012. Clarke received much of his playing experience in clubs across the pond, beginning his senior career in 1980 with Ipswich Town from England. From there he played with six other English clubs, including Bournemouth from 1985-1986 and Southampton from 1986-1989. During his time with both clubs, he scored more than 60 goals. A knee injury in 1992 caused him to retire from playing on the pitch.
After taking five years off, Clarke came back onto the
soccer scene, this time joining the coaching ranks. He began his head coaching career with USL side Richmond Kickers from 1998-1999. Since then he has gotten coaching experience in a variety of levels including Major League Soccer and national teams.
