5.28.2016 ARMADA MATCHDAY

TODAY’S MATCH Presented by

vs.

Today’s match is the 2016 Spring Season finale as the Armada FC will celebrate Teacher Appreciation Night presented by PDQ at Community First Park at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. The club is proud to support the educators in our community as we pay tribute to teachers and principals throughout Northeast Florida. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive the special edition Teachers Appreciation scarf revealing the winner of the PDQ scarf design contest in which dozens of entries were accepted for. All the exciting match day traditions will commence as the team takes the pitch tonight. As always, it will be easy to know when the Armada players find the back of the net. Prior to every home match and after every Armada goal scored, the cannons will be fired. Just before the teams enter the pitch for team introductions, the Armada’s biggest nautical supporter, Squid Vicious, is released in stunning fashion casting a shadow over the opposition and showing its eight-legged support for the ‘‘Boys in Blue.’’

A Coastal Cup Clash Today the Armada host Sunshine State rivals, the Tampa Bay Rowdies (4W-3D-2L), in the Spring Season finale, another Coastal Cup advisory and the first meeting of the year between the two clubs. The Armada sit atop of the Coastal Cup standings, beating out Tampa Bay on goal differential and are undefeated in Coastal Cup competition so far this season. With the win last weekend over Ottawa Fury FC, the Rowdies moved to 15 points in the Spring Season with only tonight’s match remaining. Tampa Bay, Indy and Fort Lauderdale are all tied in second place on 15 points going into the final weekend and are looking to snag the Spring Season title.

TECHNICAL STAFF HEAD COACH/TECHNICAL DIRECTOR TONY MEOLA

Legendary former U.S. Men’s National Team and MLS goalkeeper Tony Meola was named the Jacksonville Armada FC Head Coach and Technical Director on Nov. 24, 2015. Meola has been a prominent figure in U.S. Soccer since he stormed onto the scene in 1987 when he helped lead the U-20 National Team at the 1987 FIFA World Youth Championship in goal. Following a two-year college career at the University of Virginia, where he was a two-time All-American under the guidance of U.S. Soccer icon Bruce Arena, Meola embarked on an illustrious international career in 1988 with the U.S. Men’s National Team, which included three FIFA World Cups (1999, 1994, and 2002).

ASSISTANT COACH JIM ROONEY

Tony Meola named former MLS All-Star and U.S. National Team U-17 assistant coach Jim Rooney as his top management on Nov. 25, 2015. A native of the Bronx, New York, Rooney was a midfielder who played with Meola at the Long Island Rough Riders in 1995 and at the New York/New Jersey MetroStars in 1998 and 1999. Rooney made 116 career appearances in MLS with the MetroStars, Miami Fusion and New England Revolution.

ASSISTANT COACH MARK LOWRY

Tony Meola added Mark Lowry to his staff as an Assistant Coach on Dec. 30, 2015. Lowry, who served as an Interim Assistant Coach under Eric Dade in the Armada’s final seven weeks of the 2015 North American Soccer League Fall Season, came to Jacksonville following three years as a coach at the Orlando City Soccer Club’s U.S. Soccer Development Academy program. He also served as a coach for Armada FC youth development partner Jacksonville FC’s U.S. Soccer development program.

ASSISTANT TECHNICAL DIRECTOR NATHAN WALTER

Nathan Walter has been with the Jacksonville Armada FC since the club’s beginning stages, joining in 2013 as employee No. 2. He originally served as the Director of Soccer for Sunshine Soccer Agency, the holding corporation of the Armada FC and then took on the role of Director of Soccer Operations in 2014 once the club began its official NASL operations. Walter also served as an interim assistant coach in the last eight weeks of the 2015 NASL Fall Season. In December 2015, Walter was promoted to the club’s Assistant Technical Director.

TONY’S NOTES We return home tonight for the final leg of the spring season, but to be honest I feel like this is still just the beginning. We have accomplish near what we are planning on and we are going to keep work toward that goal. After everything that we have gone through over the past couple of weeks, it is good to see us create some chances capture that win in the U.S. Open Cup over the Charleston Battery. It gave us a jolt of positivity that we really needed, and I have been saying this from the start. It means a lot to me to do well in that tournament. However, we have to keep our sights set on our own league play. We have some tired legs from a long preseason and rough Spring Season, but there is no doubt in my mind that we will keep on trucking and work toward our ultimate goal. Thank you for your fantastic support and we look forward to seeing you at today’s match. Please stick around to help us cheer on the USMNT following our spring season finale this afternoon.

- Head Coach & Technical Director, Tony Meola

FAMILY MATTERS

#5 BETO NAVARRO One of the Armada FC’s offseason additions, defender Beto Navarro believes that family is important. Now on his new team, he is looking to kindle the fire and lead his band of brothers into battle. As the NASL Spring Season comes to a close this afternoon, Navarro still has his sights set high, building the team’s confidence and continuing it’s run into history. Q: How special was it to be a part of the Armada FC’s first U.S. Open Cup victory? “It felt rewarding. All the hard work that we have been putting in made it special for the team. Obviously we play for results and that is the result that we wanted. Especially in a tournament like the U.S. Open Cup. It means a lot to the organization and it means a lot to the fans. It is where we want to prove what we are worth. And now we get a chance to prove ourselves against Orlando City in something that means a little more than preseason. It means a lot to the organization.“ Q: How has the support from the fans encouraged you? “It is probably the best support that I have seen since I started playing. 6.11.2016 ARMADA MATCHDAY

I have been in the NASL for a few years, and I think it is the example that most teams should follow. From the fans support to the staff support and even the ownership. Jacksonville is the best that it gets in my opinion. Section 904 brings that energy every single game. Whether we win, lose or tie, they are always out there. Believe me, that means a lot to us as players and it meant a lot to be able to give them something to be proud of.“ Q: What drives you? “A lot of things drive me. Obviously winning, but also getting the best “GOING INTO EXTRA TIME AGAINST THE CHARLESTON BATTERY WAS A VERY REWARDING MOMENT AND I THINK WE ARE TURNING A PAGE HERE” out of myself as a player out there on the field. Giving 100 percent to the community. I want to give it all, you know. There are other factors that drive me. My family, God and my teammates. They are who I want to be by when I am standing out there on the field. They are who need my support. I would say the fans are an important part as well. They drive us to win and they are the reason that we play. “

# 5 Beto Navarro.

A dynamic defender with Southern California roots, Navarro arrived in Jacksonville after helping lead USL side Orange County Blues to the 2015 Western Conference regular-season title. He started 22 matches and logged 1,926 minutes of action. In 2012, Navarro played with amateur club Cal FC, coached by U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame player Eric Wynalda, and helped lead the team through an improbable run in the U.S. Open Cup.

Q: What is the best moment in your career? “I would have to say it would be in the U.S. Open Cup. We have had a lot of really exciting moments in this tournament. I had a really good run in Atlanta a few years back. Junior Sandoval was a part of that as well. We were close to making the semifinal. We just barely lost to the Chicago Fire in the round of eight. That was after beating a couple MLS teams to begin with. I would say my professional career started with the US Open Cup. I had an exciting run with an amateur team, Cal FC years ago. Going to into extra time against the Charleston Battery was a very rewarding moment, and I think we are turning a page here. We want to keep moving forward, and I believe we can win against Orlando City. Beyond that we have a lot to prove against teams in our own league. Being successful in the NASL is very important to us. Winning every time we step out on the pitch is our goal. The Open Cup is a good opportunity to show different leagues and different teams what they are made of. It think everyone is going to be hungry. We all want to be successful in whatever competition that we compete in.” 6.11.2016 ARMADA MATCHDAY

CASTING CALL We asked Beto who he would cast his teammates and coaches as in ‘‘Armada FC the Movie.’’ Here is what is who he pick to play the team. Tony Meola - Sylvester Stallone Jim Rooney - Bruce Willis Miguel Gallardo - Benjamin Pratt Alhassane Keita - Don Cheadle Tyler Ruthven - Chris Evans Matt Bahner - Matt Damon Jemal Johnson - Wesley Snipes Beto Navarro - Brad Pitt or Antonio Banderas

HISTORY IN THE MAKING When Tony Meola was hired as the head coach of the Armada, one of the first things he said was that he was going to approach the U.S. Open Cup like it was as important as any league fixture. We saw that play out earlier this month when the Armada beat the Charleston Battery of the USL, 2-1, in extra time to advance in the nation’s oldest soccer tournament. Next, the Armada will face Orlando City from the MLS on June 15 in a match that can truly be called the most important match in Armada history. If Jacksonville repeats their performance of the preseason, when the Armada beat Orlando City, 2-1, on goals from Mechack Jerome and Keita, they’ll move on to the fifth round and likely face another MLS side. These opportunities to play against the top division are not only a chance for the Armada organization to measure itself but also for individual players to raise their profile nationally. Armada defender Tyler Ruthven still credits his play in the U.S. Open Cup for his opportunity to play with the New York Red Bulls. How many other Armada players could catch the attention of a big club with some standout moments in Cup play? That could lead to opportunities for the players, which, as we learned with Richie Ryan, can also lead to opportunities for the club.

THE VISITORS TAMPA BAY ROWDIES

THE LONG ROWDY HISTORY Although the current edition of the Tampa Bay Rowdies dates back to being founded in 2008, this club actually goes back all the way to 1975, when it was originally established. In June 1974, the residents of Tampa, Fla., and nearby areas found out they would have their own soccer team to cheer for. The team was a part of the North American Soccer League Golden Era. During this time, they won the NASL Soccer Bowl Championship, beating the Portland Timbers, 2-0, in San Jose, Calif. in August 1975. The Rowdies remained with the NASL for 10 years until the league dissolved in 1984. After the end of the first NASL, the Rowdies played independently for two seasons before joining the American Indoor Soccer Association. They were only with the AISA for one season, but in that time, they reached the league’s postseason quarterfinals. Following their stint with indoor soccer, the Rowdies joined the American Soccer League in 1988. They remained there for the next five years before the club dissolved in 1993. Fast forward nearly 20 years later, the Tampa Bay Rowdies were reincarnated into the club we now know today. Initially, the club was named FC Tampa Bay during it’s entrance into the new incarnation of the NASL. They began play during the league’s inaugural season and are considered one of the NASL’s original clubs. In December 2011, the club announced that after coming to a licensing agreement, the name was changed back to the original Tampa Bay Rowdies.

2016 STATS

Bound for Head Coach Greatness

BIGGEST

Head coach Stuart Campbell has a pretty substantial WIN: 0-2 MINNESOTA history with the team. He joined the squad in 2012 as a UNITED FC 5/28 (A) midfielder and in his two seasons there, made a total of 28 appearances. DEFEAT: 1-3 CAROLINA RAILHAWKS 4/23 (H) In 2014, Campbell took the job as assistant coach, but during the 2015 season, a slow start led to the dismissal of NASL RESULTS then coach Thomas Rongen and the appointment of Campbell in his place. Campbell led the team to a 3W-4D-4L record for the remainder of their games that season. This year will be GP – 8 his second season leading the team as head coach. W–3

Prior to his time spent with the Rowdies, Campbell gained midfield experience overseas. His first professional contract was with recent 2016 English Premier League champions Leicester City from 1996 to 2001. Following that, he moved to League Two side Grimsby Town FC in 2001 after having been on loan with them the previous year. There he made 117 appearances with 10 goals. From 2004-2011, he played with the Bristol Rover FC with 288 appearances and three goals.

Sunshine State Rivalry So far this year, the Jacksonville Armada FC has not lost to any team that resides in Sunshine State and leads the Coastal Cup standing by total goals scored over Tampa Bay. The Armada has beaten the NASL’s newest club, Miami FC, twice this year, once in preseason and once in the home opener. Jacksonville has also beat the Orlando City SC in the preseason, and has drew the Fort Lauderdale Strikers earlier this season. Tampa Bay leads the Armada all-time in regular season meetings with a 2-1-0 record. However, the Rowdies have never won at Community First Park, dropping the final meeting last season 2-0 to the Armada.
