5.28.2016 ARMADA MATCHDAY
TONIGHT’S MATCH Presented by
vs. Tonight’s match against NASL newcomer Puerto Rico FC is the 2016 Fall Season home opener at Community First Park at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. The Armada is looking to get the fall campaign off to an electric start with a victory. Tonight’s match will be a night of firsts with new faces on the squad, a brand new opponent and a new set of fixtures. All the exciting matchday traditions remain intact as the team takes the pitch tonight. As always, it will be easy to know when the Armada hit’s the back of the net. Prior to every home match and after every Armada goal scored, the cannons will be fired. Just before the teams enter the pitch for team introductions, the Armada’s biggest nautical supporter, Squid Vicious, is released in stunning fashion, casting a shadow over the opposition and showing its eight-legged support for the ‘‘Boys in Blue.’’ A representative from Armada FC partner McDonald’s will have the privilege of raising the Armada FC flag high above the pitch immediately preceding the singing of the National Anthem. With the Armada’s first ever island opponent, Puerto Rico FC rolling into town, the clubs have decided to kick off in paradise with its first ever Armadaritaville presented by McDonalds. Fans are encouraged to wear their favorite island gear and will be able to enjoy tropical music all night at the stadium.

5.28.2016 ARMADA MATCHDAY
TECHNICAL STAFF HEAD COACH/TECHNICAL DIRECTOR TONY MEOLA
Legendary former U.S. Men’s National Team and MLS goalkeeper Tony Meola was named the Jacksonville Armada FC Head Coach and Technical Director on Nov. 24, 2015. Meola has been a prominent figure in U.S. Soccer since he stormed onto the scene in 1987 when he helped lead the U-20 National Team at the 1987 FIFA World Youth Championship in goal. Following a two-year college career at the University of Virginia, where he was a two-time All-American under the guidance of U.S. Soccer icon Bruce Arena, Meola embarked on an illustrious international career in 1988 with the U.S. Men’s National Team, which included three FIFA World Cups (1999, 1994, and 2002).
ASSISTANT COACH JIM ROONEY
Tony Meola named former MLS All-Star and U.S. National Team U-17 assistant coach Jim Rooney as his top management on Nov. 25, 2015. A native of the Bronx, New York, Rooney was a midfielder who played with Meola at the Long Island Rough Riders in 1995 and at the New York/New Jersey MetroStars in 1998 and 1999. Rooney made 116 career appearances in MLS with the MetroStars, Miami Fusion and New England Revolution.
ASSISTANT COACH MARK LOWRY
Tony Meola added Mark Lowry to his staff as an Assistant Coach on Dec. 30, 2015. Lowry, who served as an Interim Assistant Coach under Eric Dade in the Armada’s final seven weeks of the 2015 North American Soccer League Fall Season, came to Jacksonville following three years as a coach at the Orlando City Soccer Club’s U.S. Soccer Development Academy program. He also served as a coach for Armada FC youth development partner Jacksonville FC’s U.S. Soccer development program.
ASSISTANT TECHNICAL DIRECTOR NATHAN WALTER
Nathan Walter has been with the Jacksonville Armada FC since the club’s beginning stages, joining in 2013 as employee No. 2. He originally served as the Director of Soccer for Sunshine Soccer Agency, the holding corporation of the Armada FC and then took on the role of Director of Soccer Operations in 2014 once the club began its official NASL operations. Walter also served as an interim assistant coach in the last eight weeks of the 2015 NASL Fall Season. In December 2015, Walter was promoted to the club’s Assistant Technical Director.

TONY’S NOTES We are on a mission. From the get-go, I have made it clear that my goal was build a successful team and work toward bringing a championship to Jacksonville. We have not strayed from that goal. Heading into this Fall Season, it is clear that we have a lot of work to do to put ourselves in contention, but I assure you that our goals have not changed. The technical staff and I have made some changes and we believe that we are headed in the right direction. It was clear that we wanted to bolster the roster in the attacking part of the field. We have scouted some of the players for quite a while now and believe that these players will give us the support that is necessary. Tonight we are proud to host yet another new team in Puerto Rico FC. This has it’s challenges. We have watched Coach Whitbread build an impressive squad for the past several months and studied their preseason matches. However, with a new team it is still hard to know what to expect, so we have to ready for anything. This is sure to be a thrilling match, but we intend as we do in every match to come out on top. Thank you for coming out to this evening’s match and support the Armada FC!
- Head Coach & Technical Director, Tony Meola

ARMADA’S HONDURAN HERO
#12 JUNIOR SANDOVAL Junior Sandoval wanted to make an impact early, and this is exactly what he did. He scored the Armada’s first goal of the 2016 NASL season in April against Miami FC for a perfect introduction to the Jacksonville faithful at Community First Park. After the solid start, Sandoval believe there is much more to come and a bright future ahead for his new team and young career. Q: Not quite the spring season you wanted. What’s the plan for the fall? “It is going to take a lot of work and a lot of commitment from everyone. Everyone that is part of this team needs to work hard and be dedicated to being successful. We need to take care of our bodies. We need to recover, eat properly and keep working hard. I think we will have a good run this fall. We are going to be a strong team and we have a great group. Towards the end of the Spring Season, we were playing very well. We had some good stats. We just weren’t able to score the way we need to, but we didn’t allow many goals. The goals that we did allow were mistakes that we have to learn from. I believe that we have. The Fall Season is going to be a different tournament for us. I think we are going to have a good run. We are looking to pull some wins on the road, but we also have to be stronger here at home. We are going to get those goals that we didn’t score during the Spring Season.” 7.9.2016 ARMADA MATCHDAY
L
Q: What is your motivation? “Uwe…Everything! My teammates, my coaches, and my family. I just have a huge desire to get those wins. Especially away wins. That is something that we all badly want. We need to make history. We have already made it in the U.S. Open Cup and now we have to get those away wins. We have a really good team right now. If you look at any position on the team right now we have depth. We have three to four guys that can play well. Whether it is goalkeepers, center backs, right backs and forwards – any position really. It is going to be tough to make the starting 11 because you are going to have work to earn that spot. We are a group of 24 and everyone is going to want to play. We just have to stay on our toes. In the end I know we are all going to be celebrating.” “I AM A NATURAL WINNER. I WANT TO GET THOSE POINTS AND WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS. HOPEFULLY AT THE END OF THE YEAR WE ARE GOING TO BE CELEBRATING.”
Q: What do you want to gain personally? “I want to accomplish everything that I have a chance to. I want to score a lot of goals, win a title for the team and the city. It would be great for the fans and the club to bring a championship to Jacksonville and it would be great for me as well. I am a natural winner. I want to get those points and win championships. Hopefully at the end of the year we are going to be celebrating. That is always my goal.
#12 Junior Sandoval.
A 25-year-old from Quimistán, Honduras, Sandoval arrived in Jacksonville after a stint with Colombian Primera A side Jaguares de Córdoba, where he made 14 appearances, scored one goal and became only the third Honduran ever to play in the Colombian first division. Since joining the ranks at the Armada FC, he has racked up 639 minutes and 2 goals.
For me personally, I want to represent my National team (Honduras). I want to be able to play for my national team and represent my country. It is one of the biggest goals for me. It is very important to be able to accomplish that. I truly believe that I will be able to get my chance this year. I think I can give a lot more and am going to keep working toward it. I have to give 100 percent in practice during the entire 90 minutes of a game.” Q: What do you do during your off time? “I spend a lot of time at the gym. I go with Beto (Navarro) a lot. We also play a lot of foot tennis. We bet lunch on it. Near the end it gets pretty exciting. Also, I play blackjack with Miguel (Gallardo). We bet dinner on that. These guys are competitive when food is involved.” Q: How does it feel to be taking on a team you have a connection to? ”Yeah, I began my career playing there with the Puerto Rico Islanders. I have a lot of good memories from that time. The head coach Adrian Whitbread was the assistant coach with the Islanders. They are going to be a good team because he is a good coach and he is driven. They have Christopher Nurse who is a leader and Pito Ramos who plays for the Puerto Rico National team. It will be hard to know what to expect.”

Superlatives We asked Junior tallied up his teammates. Here is who he thinks is most likely to... • Most likely to start a bet on something? Beto Navarro -- you got to watch him, he’ll cheat • Who is likely to lose all the bets? Danny Barrow -- we always get him • Who eats the most? Sebastian Evers • Who is the most foreign? Charles Eloundou -- he is very Cameroonian • Most competitive? Me. For sure. • Most likely to spend the entire day at the Gym? Pekka Lagerblom -- such a professional • Who is the most annoying? Danny Barrow -- always messing around

NEW FACES, BETTER RESULTS It took exactly one game for the Armada’s new additions to start making a difference. Zach Steinberger scored 12 minutes into the Fall Season opener last week in Tampa Bay. He is just one of the new additions to the Armada FC roster that Tony Meola is hoping will make a significant difference this fall. By adding Steinberger, Karl Ouimette and others perhaps still to come, the Armada will benefit from Meola’s connections around the world as well as owner Mark Frisch’s willingness to do what it takes to put a winner on the field in Jacksonville. Now the Armada FC have this task in front of them: win the Fall Season, or finish with one of the two best overall records among nonseason winners. It’s easier said than done, but taking results on the road, even if it is only a draw, goes a long way toward creating that opportunity. Then again, winning at home is even more important. And tonight against Puerto Rico FC, the Armada have an opportunity to show that they can be a contender in the Fall Season. The Armada also have the benefit of adding in one of their own to the mix. Pekka Lagerblom has not played since the preseason. But when he returns, likely very soon, we may yet add another experienced, and skilled player to the attack.

THE VISITORS PUERTO RICO FC
PUERTO RICO FC The North American Soccer League’s newest expansion club is Puerto Rico FC. The team began play on July 2 against Indy Eleven at its home stadium, Juan Ramón Loubriel Stadium. Puerto Rico FC played seven preseason friendlies, finishing with a 6-1 record, with the most recent result coming in a 1-0 win over the Puerto Rican national team on June 11 in Queen, N.Y. Although Puerto Rico FC is new to the NASL for the 2016 fall season, it isn’t the first time the league has had a team in Puerto Rico. From 2003 to 2009, the Puerto Rico Islanders represented the U.S. territory in the United Soccer League, and from 2009-2012, they represented the U.S. territory in the NASL.
Whitbread Onboard On August 24, 2015 during a press conference, the club announced that Adrian Whitbread would become its first head coach entering the 2016 season. He brings an ample amount of playing experience, as well as managing experience, some of which comes from coaching the Puerto Rico Islanders from 2008 to 2012. His first head coaching position came
in 2012 during the Islanders last year, so being able to reunite with Puerto Rico as a professional head coach is something special for the former defender. Prior to starting his managerial career, Whitbread spent quite some time on the other side as a talented defender. His first professional team was with League Two side Leyton Orient FC based out of London, England. Over the next 20 or so years, he gained plenty of playing time that has added to his expertise in his coaching career.
A Melo Decision It’s not often that you see sports like basketball and soccer find common ground, but with the newest NASL club, that is essentially the basis of the entire team. New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony is the sole owner of the Puerto Rico FC. It was a decision that was easy for the Brooklyn native as a way to pay homage to his heritage and father’s birthplace. Just one year ago, it was announced that Anthony would buy the expansion franchise in the NASL and as the quote says, “the rest is history.” Upon purchasing the team, Anthony and others wanted to make sure that the team would stay committed to the community. They have already kept their promise by holding clinics that allowed players to coach kids and teach them important soccer techniques. All clinics so far were held in Puerto Rico prior to the start of their fall season.
