Boca Juniors A HISTORY OF SUCCESS:

No team embodies the beautiful game and the Latin flare of South America quite like Boca Juniors. Tonight’s opponent, Club Atlético Boca Juniors, is one of Argentina’s most successful teams, especially when it comes to international competitions. Founded in 1905 by Italian immigrants in the La Boca neighborhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina, the club has won 63 official titles to date. Boca Juniors was promoted to the Primera División of the Argentine Football Association League in 1913, where they have played ever since. The mere mention of Boca Juniors is typically accompanied by the word powerhouse and rightlyfully so, as the club claims a fan base that is comprised of approximately 40 percent of the total population of the Argentina. Boca’s pantheon of success includes 30 Primera División championships, 11 domestic cups and 18 international titles officially recognized by FIFA, which is second in the world for number of international titles won, alongside A.C. Milan and Real Madrid C.F. Boca is also one of only eight teams to have successfully completed 10

the CONMEBOL treble, winning three trophies in a single season. The club’s domestic successes are second only to cross-town and bitter rivals River Plate, who they compete against in one of the fiercest and fascinating derbies in world soccer, El Superclásico. This matches reputation exceeds itself and is widely regarded as one of the wildest events in South America. Boca plays its home matches at the iconic, 49,000 seat, Estadio Alberto J. Armando, or better known as La Bombonera, which literally translates to “the Chocolate Box,” because of its unusual structure, with curving, steeply banked stands on three sides and one underdeveloped stand. Game days at La Bombonera typically produce a cauldron-like atmosphere, which Boca diehards say “beats” like the Latin flavor of its community. Currently, Boca Juniors sits second in Primera División at the midway point of the 2015 season, only one point behind San Lorenzo with a game in hand. The club’s power players include Uruguayan midfielder Nicolas Lodeiro and the striker Daniel Osvaldo, known as “El Loco,” who has teamed up in the attack with a slew of worldclass strikers including Cristián Chávez, Juan Manuel Martinez and Jonathan Calleri. Under head coach Rodolfo Arruabarrena, a former member of the Argentina national team and Boca left back who took the reins in 2014. Boca Juniors play a similar possession-oriented, attack-minded style of soccer as the Armada, which should make for a thrilling encounter. Also similar to the Armada, Boca adorn a similar uniform color scheme in blue and gold, which is rumored to have taken from Swedish Flag docked at the port. Boca great Diego Maradona once described them as “the most beautiful jersey in the world.” Boca Juniors working class supporters refer to their team affectionately as “los xeneizes” (English: the Genoese) after the large number of Italian immigrants who call La Boca their home. 11

COACHES NOTES

Head Coach Guillermo Hoyos Tonight’s match is very special. We have the privilege to compete against a truly amazing opponent in Boca Juniors. I believe this a very unique opportunity for our city, players and all the fans. I am extremely excited to be part of this match. It is very special for me personally because I played for Boca Juniors for four years. It’s the biggest club in Argentina and one of the biggest clubs in the world. To wear the Boca Juniors jersey, was an honor for me, and the “xeneizes” will always be close to my heart. While this match offers a great show for everyone, we know it won’t be a friendly once the ball rolls. For a team such as this, it is all about defending the prestige the club gained and earned throughout their long and impressive history. However for us, it will be about preserving our pride and about writing the first pages of our international history. I expect to see a great match tonight with a lot of ball possession, some extremely impressive technical skills and constant attacking from both teams for the entire 90 minutes. It’s going to be a great event for everyone.

‘Pepp Talk’

with Cole Pepper At one point during the NASL’s Spring Season, the Armada found themselves sitting in second place and looking like a team that could challenge the first place New York Cosmos for the Spring title and the automatic spot in the NASL Championships. That was the week following a 1-0 victory over Indy Eleven. With a trip to struggling Atlanta, the Armada looked to be in great shape to make their first spring a memorable one. Then in Atlanta, the team managed only a draw. Keita was lost in the closing minutes with a hamstring injury. From that point until the end of the spring season, Keita didn’t see the field, the Armada didn’t win another match, and Jacksonville fell from second to sixth in the table. It would have been very easy to look to the Fall with a great sense of trepidation and uncertainty. But the final half of the last match of the spring season that the Armada put together in New York against the Spring Champion Cosmos changes everything. That Saturday evening at Hofstra saw the Armada playing without Keita and without defensive midfielder Lucas Scaglia, on family business in Argentina. It saw them outclassed in the first half. But the resolve they showed in the second half (not to mention twice coming from behind, first down 2-0, then 3-2 to earn a point) showed that the Armada can play with the best in the league (even at less than full strength). It showed they have players capable of making plays to change a game. And it showed that they are a resilient bunch. That all bodes well for a team that is still learning the intricacies of a system that most had never played before this year. Keita should be back shortly from the hamstring injury. Scaglia will return from his family duties. There are three more spots available in the NASL Championship. One goes to the Fall Season Champion and the other two to the next best combined records from both seasons. The Armada should believe that they are contenders for all three slots. There is a long way to go, but it appears that the possibilities are boundless for Jacksonville. 19

The Argentinian Connection Growing up in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Lucas Rodriguez had to make sacrifices to be able to play the sport he loved. Those sacrifices appear to have paid off. Even after moving to a new country, learning a new language and working his way through ranks of American soccer, Rodriguez is still able to play the game he loves now as a professional. Tonight Rodriguez will face fellow Argentinians from the club that he spent four years developing his talent, alongside his new teammates in his new home at the Jacksonville Armada.

Q: How did you get into the Boca Juniors youth academy? “I was invited by a friend, actually. We were playing together in another Buenos Aires club called Vélez Sarsfield. I was trying out at Vélez Sarsfield, and my friend invited me to go tryout at Boca Juniors as well. So I followed him there, and we both ended up staying and playing with Boca for four years. It is very demanding. They have about 100 kids trying out every month that are all trying to take your spot. The level of play is amazing. The quality of players is very good because they get players from all over Argentina and pick the best players. They have scouts throughout the country recruiting players. They even have dorms that these young players stay at. At times, they bring players from other countries as well. While I was there, they brought some Japanese players; there were about 10 of them trying out. There are just so many players trying out that the quality of the ones that they select is very, very good. As you can imagine, it is very hard to get in because there is just such an elite group of players.” Q: Do you consider yourself privileged to have played at Boca Juniors? Definitely. I was privileged to have played there for four years. It is hard enough to play there for one year. There are almost 100 kids coming every month on trial. It is easy for a club like that to say that they found someone better. It requires a lot of hard work and dedication. I used to take two public buses every morning to get to practice by myself when I was just 12-years-old. I also had to change schools because when I played at Boca Juniors they train in the morning. I had to leave all my friends and move to an afternoon school just to be able to train in the morning and go to school during the afternoon, which is not very common. Obviously, there are a lot of sacrifices that both my parents and I had to make to be able to practice at an elite club like Boca. Even the coaching quality is very high because they use former professionals in the academy. Playing there was the best four years of my youth career because of the high quality of the coaches, players and competition. It is arguably one of the best youth systems in Argentina, or maybe even in the world. One of my coaches was the father of Newcastle United’s Fabricio Coloccini’s father.

“I am really happy with where I am today. I feel a connection with what is going on in Jacksonville and the Armada FC organization.”

Q:Boca is one of the biggest teams in the world. What does it mean to be able to go up against your old club? It is a unique opportunity for everyone involved. I don’t think about Boca as my old club because so much has happened throughout my life and my career that four years doesn’t seem like a long time. It is a privilege more than anything to be able to play this club, because it is just such a huge club that has been so successful and developed so many great players. I remember when I used to get to practice all the older players would be leaving when we were arriving. I used to walk by Carlos Tevez, Coloccini, and many great players all the time. It was a very exciting experience. It is really an honor to be able to compete against a big club like Boca Juniors. Being Argentinian myself, I can appreciate everything they have accomplished as a club. I am humbled to have this opportunity.

6.27.2015 Match day

QUICK FACTS: Q: Why do you think the Armada FC have been so successful so far? I think we have been successful at being able to bring a professional and demanding team in an excellent organization. We have an amazing and experienced coaching staff who have been able to put, together a great team of players. We have also been successful at being able to mesh together well as quickly as we have in the short time that we have had. We have been able to do what few teams in this league have done, which is play a dynamic and different style of soccer in a short period of time. I think the players believe in the organization, and the staff are going in the right direction and are willing to follow. Most of all, we all really enjoy and believe in the playing style. Personally, I really enjoy playing the style that we do more than a 4-4-2 or more defensive-minded formations. The attack-minded philosophy is what keeps us excited. Q: What is the highest point of your career so far? I am really happy with where I am today. I feel a connection with what is going on in Jacksonville and the Armada FC organization. The ownership is hands down the best. Mark Frisch has made everyone very welcome and comfortable. He has made us feel part of the city and part of the entire organization. I’m just very thankful. It is also just a privilege to work with experienced Argentinian professionals like (general manager) Dario (Sala) and the coaching staff. They are really idols in Argentina. There many people just like me who really admire these coaches, who have done so much for the sport. I feel humbled to be a part of this team. To give me confidence and give me a place in this project says a lot about me.

Lucas Rodriguez

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Rodriguez moved to Lenexa, Kansas with his family when he was 14 years old. He spilt his college career between Johnson County Community College and MidAmerican Nazarene University (MNU). Rodriguez signed his first professional contract and helped lead NSC Minnesota to the NASL 2011 NASL Soccer Bowl Championship,

FUN FACTS:

Q: Imagine you have just scored the game-winning goal for Argentina in the 2018 World Cup. What is going to be to your goal celebration? “Honestly, I would point at the sky and dedicate the goal to my grandmother, who passed away this year. I can’t do backflips!”

The group we have is a really good group of guys. Every single player is a good human being. We all want to be really successful for our coaches, the staff and the city.

BOB’S BOOTROOM with Bob Veal

The Armada FC completed the North American Soccer League Spring Season in sixth place with 12 points. It was a season of many highs and a few near misses. The Armada drew or lost by the odd goal in several games, and in almost all of those games, the Armada won the possession of the game and came close to getting a positive result. The system and attractive football the Armada played was regarded by many of their opponents as difficult to beat. At the beginning of the season, I said that it was a risk and reward system. We have seen the risks of going forward and being exposed at the back. The Armada have also seen the rewards of playing high and building from the back. As a fan, it has been an exciting spring season from the first goal, which was a Jemal Johnson gem after 12 seconds of the opening game, a new modern-era NASL record, to the classic side foot strike by Joseph Toby against the New York Cosmos in the last spring game of the season. Now the Armada look forward to a very promising fall season, which will see the team continue to improve in their understanding of each other and their application of the system. The Armada showed us what they are capable of during the second half of the game in New York last week. They played attacking one and two touch soccer, penetrating a very good midfield and defense and took advantage of the chances they made. Tonight, we will see the Armada play an extremely talented team in the Boca Juniors. It is a team that stands at second place in the Argentinian Primera División and plays a similar system to the Armada – possession soccer playing from the back and playing high in the midfield. Expect to see an exciting and fast game, with space in the middle to play. Catch Bob Veal on the Armada Radio Show Fridays on Sports Radio 930 at 3 p.m. and on Bob’s Bootroom during Armada Kickoff at 11 p.m. on CW17. PG.29 ANSWERS: 1.T 2. F 3.T 4.T 5.T 6.F 7.F
