He has been responsible for crafting a roster that has allowed the club to be a strong contender in just its first year, challenging for the Spring Season championship until the ninth week. A former professional goalkeeper with more than 20 years of experience across the world’s most elite leagues, Sala played in more than 500 official games and 30 international matches, including the 2003 Copa Libertadores and leading FC Dallas to a first-place finish in 2006. At the 2003 Copa Libertadores, he was the least scored-upon goalkeeper and led his team through a historic run. After retiring from player soccer in 2010, Sala developed into one of America’s most sought-after player agents and talent scouts and founded a successful sports marketing company, Dario Sala Soccer, LLC.

Livingstone who hails from Glasgow, grew up avidly following the Scottish and English Premier and Champions Leagues, and was a season ticket owner with his home team, Glasgow Celtic F.C., and the Scotland National team. He directed the successful brand and competitive launch of the Armada FC, which debuted in front of 14,000 against the MLS Philadelphia Union at EverBank Field on February 7, 2015 and set a modern-day NASL regular season attendance record of 16,164 against FC Edmonton on April 4.

Section 904: Fueling the Chants of Passion Members of Section 904 are not normal. In fact, they value their eccentricity. The group of glorified soccer misfits take a bit of pride in meeting up to polish off a pint, practicing their drum rolls, and talking “TIFO” before a match week. And with and an exciting North American Soccer League Fall Season underway, the group has a lot to get excited about. Some big matches are bearing down on Jacksonville, with in-state rivals the Tampa Bay Rowdies and Fort Lauderdale Strikers making important appearances along with Spanish legend Raúl and the New York Cosmos landing at Community First Park tonight. Between matches, the groups meet frequently at local watering holes to discuss any number of topics. Anyone who sits around a picnic table at Jacksonville Beach’s Engine 15 brewery can hear a constant hum of “Come On You Boys in Blue” over the top of the rumbling of an impromptu planning session. “We are really going with the flow,” said Mike Gibbs, one of Section 904’s chant leading Capos. “We have to be very adaptive and adjust what we see is going to happen next. We are looking to grow and want a big cohesive group of crazy fans. So we are really promoting that around town.” Gibbs joined the group not too long before the team’s first preseason match and quickly became a dedicated member and season ticket owner. He sees the group as an integral part of the team during its home matches. “It is about bringing the passion and swinging the momentum,” he said. “We feed off of that. We really look to the crowd for inspiration. It is not ever ideas that just sling onto each other, it is adapted to the match going on and the crowd around us.” 7.18.2015 Match day

Section 904’s philosophy isn’t much different than other soccer supporters groups around the world. They believe their presence can influence the outcome. This may be motivation for many of its members who are even willing to endure harsh weather to come support the club. “When I am on the megaphone, I have to feed off that more than anyone,” Gibbs said. “I feel out the crowd to see what people want to hear. Then we look around and see what part of the match we are in, how the match is going and if we need a swing in momentum. Do we need something fast paced? Or do we need the ‘I Believe’ chant in the 85th minute when we are up two-nil?” Austin Rose, an ardent soccer enthusiast and Section 904 member, shares in that philosophy. “We are the lifeblood of the team,” Rose said. “It is easy to come win a match 11 versus 11 in an empty stadium, but it is very difficult to win 11 versus 11 with the crowd against you. And that is what we plan to be. We want to be a team that makes it difficult to come to our town and win.” Rose also noted how Section 904’s presence has been steadily growing since the first match on Feb. 7 against the Philadelphia Union. “Anything the Armada FC invites us to, we will be there,” Rose said. “The community is seeing us, and we are starting to gain some recognition. The team is new, we are new and we are really trying to grow organically. It is really a trial by fire.” There is no lack of ambition in the growing group, and it shows after every match. Cofounder Sebastian Cardona is always open to recruiting more soccer-loving members who are eager and loud. Cardona also encourages non-members to sit with them during matches. “We are completely open to fans that aren’t Section 904 sitting in our section,” he said. “I promise that if you sit in our section for one match, you will want to come back and sit with us again. It is addictive.” (Learn how to join the Section 904 chants on page 41)

COACH’S NOTES

Head Coach Guillermo Hoyos It has been a trying time for the Armada FC. Both the Spring and Fall Seasons have offered their challenges. As a new team, we are working very hard to rise to the occasion and play a style of soccer that, long term, Jacksonville can be proud of. While we have encountered some tough opponents and lost some close battles, I truly believe that we are now starting to come into our own. Every match I see our players starting to execute on what we have worked so hard on. It is crucial that we all continue to believe in our system, and our boys are beginning to show that they do. We respect the New York Cosmos as they are the Spring Season Champions (well deserved), but our mentality is to always look for the victory, as we are adjusting things to our system. The Armada will continue to build up the identity of the club, and games like the one against such a respectable team as the Cosmos will help to define what type of club we want to be. We are so happy to be back playing in front of our fans right here in Jacksonville. Thank you for coming to tonight’s game at Community First Park.

‘Pepp Talk’

with Cole Pepper As the Armada host the New York Cosmos tonight, Community First Park will be ripe for memories to be made. This is the one and only time this year that the Armada will host the Cosmos. That would be enough to make this match mean more than other regular season meetings. Now add to the recipe that New York’s big off-season signing, the legendary Raul is in fine form, and that gives the modern soccer fan something to watch. If you are a long-time Jacksonville soccer fan, the chance to see the Cosmos play in Jacksonville for the first time in 33 years is historic. The last time the Cosmos colors were on a soccer field in northeast Florida, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts were atop the pop charts, with “I Love to Rock and Roll”(April 10, 1982), Cal Ripken, Jr. was just starting his streak of consecutive games played and we all wanted to know if Sam and Diane would get together on Cheers! In other words, a lot has changed since the Cosmos last played in Jacksonville. And don’t forget that the Cosmos are also the newly-crowned NASL Spring Season Champions. They haven’t lost a match this year. They are, quite simply, the team to beat in the NASL right now. The Armada played the Cosmos tight in a 3-3 draw in New York to end the Spring Season. Jacksonville outplayed the Cosmos in the second half of that one. The Armada also figure to be very hungry for this one. It’s been five weeks since the team played at Community First Park. The last time they played under the lights at CFP, it was still the month of May. In short, the atmosphere promises to be memorable for this one. What does that all mean? Simply, it’s a great opportunity for the Armada to put on a great show and notch a signature win over the big dog of the NASL. 19

Passion and Purpose Armada midfielder Marcos Flores brings a unique spirit, moving passion, and skillful playmaking into not only every match he plays, but into his daily life as well. From winning the Australian A-League Player of the Year in 2011, to his remarkable recovery from a potential career-ending injury, Flores has experienced the ups and downs of a rewarding career and is now looking to lead his new club, the Armada FC, into a successful and exciting future.

Q:How do you stay so passionate about your profession? It is about embracing this style of life. In some ways, it is about embracing what you have at the moment. To find a good reason to live is to fight for what you have and to fight for your dreams. When I was a young kid, the only thing I wanted to do was to play soccer in the park. When I was told that I could live my life, buy food and buy presents for my mom and family just by kicking the ball and playing the game I love, I thought it was unreal. Right now, I am lucky enough to live my dream. This is why every single day that I wake up, I make sure that my heart and my mind know that I am doing what I love. The only way I know how to live is to be full of passion and energy every single day. If it is not a step forward so much that it is a half a step forward but just never back. Q:Your recovery from an injury in Australia was pretty remarkable. How do you stay so resilient? Actually, July will be a year since my last club signed me while I was injured. Even when I was still in my fourth month of recovery, I still had a six-month road ahead of me. I am just very thankful to them. When I wake up, I realize how thankful I am for what happened one year ago and all the people that helped me to get through it. That doesn’t leave me any room in my mind to not take care of my knee. I put so much effort into recovering that I am not willing to lose it again. Being lazy or not being thoughtful with my fitness is just out of the question.

I found myself with my dog in Australia, preparing to fly back to Argentina with a doubt in my mind – not in my heart – about whether I would play again. It is not just about me. There are a lot of people in my life and at the Armada that help me to keep moving forward. My coach and conditioner, Sebastian (Fabres), coach Hoyos and Edison (Ibarra) have been on top of my fitness as well. And of course our athletic JOI trainer Andrew (Orpiano), is always available, every second, to offer any treatment that my leg needs. Just on this last trip, our plane got delayed for eight hours and we got to Washington, D.C., and even at 11 p.m., Andrew gave me treatments. No questions. I am so thankful for him. Q:What kind of sacrifices have you made to get you where you are? In my life, I have to replace the word ‘sacrifice,’ with the word ‘choice.’ We all choose things and have to give up things. In the eyes of a lot of people, it would be a sacrifice to give things up, but for myself it was really a choice. I gave up things that in that moment, when I was younger, I had to give up going out with my friends – which at that time seemed like the most important thing ever. But it was more important for me to sleep because the next day I had a game at 10 a.m. 7.18.2015 Match day

QUICK FACTS: Marcos Flores I can describe what all the opportunity cost in the different sections of my life. When I was a teenager, it was going out with my friends. When I became an adult, it was eating properly. In Argentina, we have barbeques every day, and it is really hard to say no to those, especially when we have five or six a week. Then when I got my injury, the choice was working hard when no one was watching me. I was just talking to my teammate, Bochy (Hoyos), about when one of my old clubs cut me after just two months of rehab, I was learning how to run again. I found myself with my dog in Australia, preparing to fly back to Argentina with a doubt in my mind – not in my heart – about whether I would play again. I said to him: ‘Do you know how hard it is to work in the gym by yourself and push yourself to the limit that you are working hard, while no one is watching? What would you do in that situation?’ There are a lot of different answers in that situation, but I will tell you what I did. I held up my phone and recorded the reality of my life. I didn’t do it for the ego or because I love watching myself. I recorded myself doing all the exercises because my coaches and my physio weren’t there to see. I recorded throughout my recovery. I would record the exercise five or six times to make it perfect for the video, even though my program only had me do two. I was working harder than I should.

An attacking midfielder from Reconquista, Argentina known for his technical and playmaking ability, Flores spent the last five years in the Australian A-League and Chinese Super League before joining The Jacksonville Armada in February 2015.

FUN FACTS:

Q: Can you name the three best songs to get the team pumped up? I am responsible for the music. In the beginning, I used to get a lot of criticism from everything for my ‘romantic Spanish’ taste. So then I had to do some investigative research into what these 12 different cultures on the Jacksonville Armada all wanted to listen to. It was really tough to get everyone to like one song. It takes me a lot of time on Spotify to make these playlists. I remember when I used to play romantic stuff, Joseph Toby and Matt Bahner hated it. Then I played an English song, and (Lucas) Trejo and Bochy wanted to kill me. So the three songs I would play are:

It wasn’t to put on YouTube or share on Twitter, but I knew when the opportunity came, I would have something to show for it. I recorded six months on video, so that when my last team, Newcastle Jets, called me, they had four months of recovery plus some on video. I would guess that is why they signed me and that opportunity came through.

1.“Blessings” – Big Sean with Drake and Kayne West – I hit Pascal, Toby, Jemal Johnson and even coach with that one.

I gave up a lot of parties on the beach because I had a lot of free time. When you are recovering and your exercise is only 30 minutes per day in the beginning, then you have all day to do whatever you want.

3.”Brasil Decime Que Se Siente” – It is a song that comes from the rivalry that Argentina has with Brazil, and it really pumps everyone up. We are trying to build an Armada song with that melody, but that is the top song for sure.

2.“Marchate Ahora” - Los Totora - It is a really popular song in Argentina, so it goes well with most of the team.

Tonight’s opponent NEW YORK COSMOS

The New York Cosmos have one of the richest histories and established club brands in American soccer. While the team the Armada FC will encounter this evening is not the same organization that fielded soccer greats Pelé, Franz Beckenbauer and Giorgio Chinaglia, the club does consider itself a revival of the original franchise. The club declared its rebirth and return to the North American Soccer League in July 2012 and announced Pelé as its honorary president in August of that year along with Shep Messing and Carlos Alberto as ambassadors. By the end of the year, had its first player, former New 2015 NASL Fall York Red Bulls defender and Long Island native, Carlos Mendes, as well Season as head coach Giovanni Savarese. New York got off to an incredible start when it entered the league in the 2013 Fall Season. The Cosmos dropped only one match in 15 games to capture the 2013 Soccer Bowl to cap off their inaugural season in the modern NASL. Perhaps just as notable the club’s successful start is the Cosmos’ propensity to sign experienced and well-known superstars such as Brazilian-born Spanish midfielder Marcos Senna in 2013 and marquee Spanish striker Raúl in 2014.

MATCHUP HISTORY

In the original incarnation of the NASL, the Cosmos matched up against the Jacksonville Tea Men four times, winning twice and losing twice. The final game, on May 2, 1982, saw Giorgio Chinaglia and Vladislav Bogicevic score in a 2-0 Cosmos victory. Chinaglia scored five goals in four games against the Tea Men.

The next Fall Season match up will be in Hempstead, N.Y., on Sept. 12. The Cosmos have gone undefeated so far in 2015 (5W-6D-0L Combined Record) and are poised to continue their performance in the fall. BOB’S BOOTROOM with Bob Veal

The NASL Fall Season is underway, and although it is not the start the Armada wanted, it is early in the season. The team is outplaying opponents and their determination and morale are still very noticeable, which is a good sign. As the Armada continue to play the system the coach mandates, the team is also being creative and mixing up the tactics for each opponent. The base of the Armada’s style will be possession and playing from the back, as well as playing high into the opponents’ third of the field. However, as of late we have seen many more early balls from the back for our forwards to run onto or collect. The result is playing more direct soccer and getting players forward quickly. This gives the Armada an opportunity to break fast and isolate the opponents’ upfield. It still remains for the Armada to take the chances they make and score more goals. If they are to make the final four in the playoffs, they must find their touch in front of the goal. Like any team, the Armada are going to get their fair share of games where the decisions do not go their way. They must learn from these games and concentrate on the “goal,” which is be one of the top four teams to make the playoffs. Catch Bob Veal on the Armada Radio Show Fridays on Sports Radio 930 at 3 p.m. and on Bob’s Bootroom during Armada Kickoff at 11 p.m. on CW17.
