ARMADA GOes PINK IN SUPPORT OF BREAST
CANCER AWARENESS MONTH & THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY
To bring attention to the fight against breast cancer and support October’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Jacksonville Armada FC are wearing a signature pink jersey for the first two home matches in October at Community First Park. A portion of proceeds from a jersey auction following both matches will be donated to the American Cancer Society . Both matches – tonight’s against the Indy Eleven, presented by Brumos, and the October 17th match against FC Edmonton, presented by We Got Soccer - will also feature a series of match activities to recognize the survivors who have battled the disease. Survivors will also be saluted prior to the match by being invited to raise the ceremonial flag and join the captains on the field for the coin toss prior to kickoff. The events will be in support of and to raise recognition for the ACS’s Making Strides Against Cancer campaign. “We are honored to have this opportunity to support the fight against Breast Cancer,” said Club President Steve Livingstone. “ This is something that we are very passionate in supporting here at the Armada, so wearing these jerseys is not only a great way to show our support in the fight against cancer, but also contribute to such an important organization as the American Cancer Society.” Following the Oct. 17 match, which will also feature a post-match fireworks display presented by We Got Socer, the game-worn pink jerseys will be signed ande auctioned off online, with proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in a effort to help finish the fight against breast cancer.

COACH’S NOTES
Interim Head Coach Eric Dade
First and foremost, I want to thank everyone involved in this club. It is really because of the leadership of Mark Frisch, a great staff, and all the fans who have support the team from the beginning that we have able to be so successful. I already knew we had a great fans, but what I saw it from the field last Saturday was spectacular. Your support was greatly appreciated. In my 16 years of playing professionally, I always thrived when someone got the best out of me and that is exactly what I wanted from these players. We have some serious talent out here and it is our job as a coaching staff to put players in a position to succeed. I believe we were able to do that to an extent. It wasn’t perfect, but the results show that we are definitely headed in the right direction. While Indy Eleven sit below us on the table, and may be not appear to be threatening opponent, history shows that they are good team. Coach Tim Regan, who has also taken the role as interim head coach, has beat us once and will be looking to do it again. We not only respect, but also never underestimate any opponent. We play in a very competitive league. I invite everyone to enjoy tonight’s match, show your support for our club and help us bring awareness to the brave people that both battled and beat Breast Cancer as we take the pitch tonight. 17

‘Pepp Talk’ With Cole Pepper A Whole New World Last Saturday, as I took the headsets off at the end of our broadcast of the Armada 2-0 victory over Tampa Bay, I turned to my color analyst Mauricio Ruiz, and we each gave each other a look. We both had the same thought: “That was really good!” It wasn’t a perfect performance, but it was proper. It was mature. It was measured. It was…successful. Now, in fairness, the Armada have played plenty of successful matches at home (they’ve only lost once in Jacksonville in the NASL regular season). And they were healthy, with basically all of their regulars available for the first time since April. But even with those factors, the Armada looked different. And it wasn’t just the Tea Men kits. They had a new formation featuring two holding midfield players (Lucas Scaglia and Nicolas Perea) and yet, the Armada still dominated possession, especially in the first half when they held the ball for 61 percent of first 45 minutes. This shouldn’t have been a surprise, perhaps. Eric Dade, installed as the interim head coach on Sept. 21, spent 16 years as a professional, including a number of years in MLS, where he played on the backline. He’s a defender and has high expectations for the defense. The addition of Haitian National Team player Mechack Jerome and the move to put Matt Bahner at center back, teamed with the dual holding mids, certainly gave the Armada a more stable look defensively. And then there was Miguel Gallardo, who made some spectacular saves, including a double save late in the first half. That’s how you solidify a clean sheet. If last Saturday’s match is any indication (and I think that it is), we could be in for some great soccer to finish the season. Six matches to go. Four of them at home, including Saturday’s matchup with Indy, and a chance to finish mid-table. I’m looking forward to experiencing the final chapter to the story of the 2015 Armada. 19

Making An early Impression Colombian by birth, but Floridian at heart. Armada midfielder Nicolas Perea has made the most of his first professional season in Northeast Florida. A native of Bucaramanga, Colombia, Perea’s parents brought their family to South Florida at a young age to give them opportunity, and opportunity is exactly what Perea has before him. A four-year starter at Syracuse University before coming to Jacksonville, he has worked hard to become a regular on starting 11. Perea is making the most of this inaugural season and loving his time in Jacksonville.
Q: How did you end up in South Florida? “I was really young, around seven, when I left Colombia. I only have a few memories of my childhood there. I’d play soccer for fun with the kids in the neighborhood when I was younger, but never with a club or anything. Not until I came to America. My parents came to the states for a better future for my sister and me. They wanted us to be able to go to school here, learn another language and give us opportunities. My father was a lawyer, and my mother a reporter, so they were doing very well. We had a great apartment, plenty of stuff and a good life in Colombia. They let all of that go for us. I am really thankful for everything they have done for my sister and me. We remind ourselves everyday of how much they have done for us. They try and make it out as many games as they can.”
“I want to be able to say that ‘I couldn’t have picked a better place to start my career.’ And right now that is what is happening” Q: How did you end up at Syracuse University?
While I was playing at my youth club, Weston Fury FC, it became a U.S. Soccer Development Academy, and we made into a couple showcases. The showcase is where college recruiters can come spot young players. I met them at a showcase in Phoenix. To be honest, I didn’t even know Syracuse had a soccer program. I had emailed other schools hoping to see other coaches, but it was on the last day of the showcase that I met Mike Miller, who was Syracuse’s recruiting coordinator at the time. He approached me and said that he liked the way I played and thought I would be perfect for them at Syracuse. So I looked it up, really liked everything about it and made the decision to go there. Q: Why major in psychology? Honesty, I have always been fascinated by the way that people think. I am really drawn to it. I pay attention to that kind stuff without even thinking about it. I have always noticed the way that I acted and the way that other people react to it. I questioned everything my mom would tell me. Also, I really like shows like Criminal Minds with the way they think and act on everything. Q: Does your psychology background play a part in the way you play your game? Maybe it does have something to do with it. I try to keep calm during the games. I took a sports psychology class in college and really learned a lot you feel during games can really affect how you play. It was enlightening. I don’t really think about it while I am out there, but I guess I do 10.3.2015 Match day
throw a bit of psychology in there while I am playing. Q: How did it feel to make it onto your first professional club? When I first got here, I really had to do some research. I heard good things, but I still looked up all the players that were here to get to know who I was playing with. I was pretty amazed to see where some of the guys had been through and played at. I am truly blessed! To be able to share the field with these guys who have so much experience, I can only learn from it and make me a better player.
QUICK FACTS: NICOLAS PEREA
Nicolas Perea is a midfielder beginning his professional career with the Jacksonville Armada FC. Perea comes to the club after starting four years with Syracuse University
I remember the first scrimmage that we played against New York City FC at Patton Park. I had only been here a week, and I hadn’t even signed FUN FACTS: with the club yet. Tonight’s opponent INDY ELEVEN
In April 2013, Indy Eleven, became the ninth team to enter the North American Soccer League, exactly 152 years to the day of the initial enlistment of the 11th Indiana Regiment during the Civil War, for which the team bares its name. The club is the brainchild of its president and general manager Peter Wilt, who established MLS’ Chicago Fire in the late 90s, and the Indy Pro Soccer movement’s efforts to bring a team to Indiana. The club’s owner, Ersal Ozdemir, CEO of Keystone Group, LLC, appointed former Queens Park Ranger, and US international Juergen Sommer as the first head coach and director of soccer operations and lead the efforts in building the team from the ground up. The team plays their games at Indiana University-Purdue University’s Michael A. Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis. The team made its NASL regular-season debut in April 2014 against the Carolina RailHawks in a 1-1 draw. Despite a lackluster inaugural season that saw the team finish ninth place overall in 2014, Indy Eleven managed to average the highest attendance in the league.
MATCHING UP THIS FALL
The NASL Fall Season has been quite a tumultuous time for the Indy Eleven. After a long stretch of poor results, the team parted ways with Sommer in June. On the same day, the Eleven appointed Tim Regan interim coach and the club’s World Cup champion and renowned Brazilian international Kleberson assistant coach for the remainder of the season. While an early Fall Season rush saw the team make it to as high as fifth in the table, Indy has not managed hold the momentum over the long run and have drifting back down to the double digits. However, even after a 7-1 dowsing from the Fort Lauderdale Strikers and the club’s propensity to concede late goals, Indy still retains hope in reclaiming their season throughout the remaining matches of the year. And with a 3-0 win over the Armada FC in Indianapolis last time out, the Eleven will be looking for some serious pressure from midfielders Zach Steinberger, Dane Richards, Daniel Cuevas and Don Smart as well as a stellar performance from veteran goalkeeper Kristian Nicht to duplicate those results.

SOCCER 101 A GUIDE TO THE G AME OBJECTIVE Two teams, with 11 players per side, compete to score goals while protecting their own from the opposing team. Goals are scored by putting the ball in the opposing team’s goal box.
MATCH LENGTH Matches have two 45-minute halves played without stopping the clock, with a 15-minute halftime break. At the end of 45 minutes, the referee adds on “stoppage time” to make up for any delays during play. Matches can end in ties, but usually in tournaments or playoff games, there must be a winner. Ties are broken with two 15-minute overtime periods, followed by a penalty shootout.
The Shootout Five players from each team take turns shooting on goal with only the goalkeeper. Whichever team scores the most goals wins. If the tie is not broken after the 2 rounds, five more players are chosen and the shootout becomes sudden death, where the first team to score a goal wins.

Positions Forwards – Their main responsibility is to score goals.

D
D
D
D G
Midfielders – They move up and down the field as they contribute to both the defensive and offensive efforts. Defenders – The last line of defense other than the goalkeeper. Goalkeeper – The only players allowed to use their hands and arms.
No touching Players can use any part of their body except their hands and arms. The goalkeeper is the only player allowed to touch the ball with the hands and arms, but only while he is in his own penalty box.
Set Pieces Throw-ins – The opponents are awarded a throw-in when a player causes the ball to go out of play. One player is allowed to throw the ball in towards one of their teammates, resuming play. Goal kicks – A goal kick is awarded to a team when the opposing team does not score but causes the ball to cross the defending team’s goal line on either side of the net. Corner kicks – A corner kick is given to the attacking team when the ball crosses the goal line, having been last touched by a player on the defending team. Free kicks – There are two types of free kicks – indirect
and direct. Indirect free kicks are for less severe fouls and must be touched by another player before entering the goal. Direct free kicks are given for serious fouls and are allowed to enter the goal without being touched by any other player.
The Cards Yellow Card – Penalty for committing a dangerous or
unfair foul.
Red Card – Penalty for continuing to play with excessive
aggression, also ejects them from the game and disqualifies the player their next match. Their team will be forced to play the rest of the game without their ejected player and is not allowed to substitute another player in.
The Offside Rule Offside Position (OK) – A player is in the offside
X X
position if they are ahead of the ball, in the opponents’ half of the field and there are fewer than two opponents even with or ahead of him.
O
Offside (NOT OK) – A player who is in the offside position becomes offside when they participate in the play when they interfere with an opponent or otherwise tries to take advantage of being in the offside position.
Exceptions – It’s not a foul for a player in an offside position if he receives the ball directly from a throw-in, a corner kick or a goal kick.
