Marcos Flores JOins Godmother’s Fight Every time the Armada takes the pitch at Community First Park, the battle begins. However, for many, tonight’s match is a special battle and one that represents the fight against a disease that has taken so much from so many. Armada midfielder Marcos Flores knows he is battling for more than just points on the table. His performance will always be inspired by someone close who has fought the hardest battle that an athlete can imagine twice. Flores’ godmother, Kika Bernard, who still lives in Cordoba, Argentina, has battled cancer since she was only 28-years-old. “She was the most popular fitness instructor in town and a long time field hockey goalie in Argentina,” said Flores. “Not too many people have the relationship that I have with my godmother. She was and still is the most passionate energetic person that I know. She could teach 200 kids with just her charisma. She is truly an inspiration.” Flores, as young aspirating athlete, was always driven by the fact that someone so close remained so strong for so long. “I remember it like it was yesterday,” he said. “At the time she was diagnosed, she was pregnant. I was only 10-years-old, and it was really difficult to see someone so athletic, so talented and so dear to me suffer from this terrible disease. Obviously it hit her really hard. It is really hard to hear that you have cancer in the middle of a pregnancy. After the first round of chemotherapy, the doctors told her that she would never have kids again.” Despite all, Kika continued to fight and even had a little surprise. “Today she is doing amazing today and has even had another baby,” said Flores. “She truly is an amazing inspiration. My cousin (Kika’s child) is the healthiest person I know.” This weekend when the Armada and Flores take the pitch wearing the breast cancer awareness pink jersey, he knows that he and his teammates will be playing for more than just the win. He will play for the love, survival and a truly unique person dear to his heart. 11

COACH’S NOTES
Interim Head Coach Eric Dade
Tonight’s match is a very important one. We are coming down to the final matches of the season, and we are not only looking to get results but the support of the whole community as well. We have consistently performed well in front you, our fantastic fans, and we want to continue this. We have really been challenged this season, and we play in a very competitive league. But I believe we have a truly talented group of players. These guys play with skill and tenacity, but the real test that is in front of us are the final games of the season. FC Edmonton is a team our club hasn’t seen since the NASL opener back in April. While that was a great win for our club, FC Edmonton has had a solid season since then and has turned into a contender for the playoffs, and all credit is due to their talented roster and respected head coach, Colin Miller. This match is a must-win to keep our playoff hopes alive, but we are going treat this match like any match we play at Community First Park – with poise and preparation. We will continue to stay disciplined on defense but intend to attack with everything we have got to offer. Thank you so much for coming out to tonight’s match and we look forward, we always do, to hearing your support as when we take the pitch this evening. 17

‘Pepp Talk’ With Cole Pepper Future and Present Intriguing for Armada The final three weeks of the NASL season are going to tell us a lot about the offseason storylines with the Armada. How the club finishes on the field will impact the coaching search and the player acquisition plan looking ahead to 2016. Let’s start with the coaching search. Eric Dade has these final matches to prove himself as a candidate for the position of head coach (without the interim title). It’s going to be interesting to see how performance and results play into the decision. As executive director of the Armada development academy with JFC, Dade already has a full plate. If he isn’t the head coach going forward, he’s still going to play in important role in shaping the sport in Northeast Florida. However, if the performances and results are both there, Dade could certainly be a candidate (and maybe a leading candidate) for the head coaching position. But to me, the composition of the team is the most interesting. Particularly if the Armada is playing a different system in 2016, there are some questions about who fits where. Goal scorers are almost always needed, but how to utilize some of the players who were brought in to run the system implemented by the previous coaching staff appears to be the top challenge of whoever is handling the coaching duties. So what does that mean for the final matches of this season? As long as the Armada are in the playoff chase, expect to see the most reliable players (and the ones who best fit the system Dade wants to play) getting most of the playing time. He wants to win, and he wants to make the push for the postseason a priority. The Armada have only lost once at home this year, and they don’t plan on giving up the ship at Community First Park.

Defending the Fleet It has been almost a year since Fabricio Ortiz became one of the first international players to sign with the Jacksonville Armada FC. The 25-year-old defender from Casilda, Argentina, scored the club’s first goal in its inaugural match against a robust Philadelphia Union in Jacksonville and worked his way into the starting lineup. As someone that lives and breathes the beautiful game, Ortiz is determined to keep developing as a player and continue to earn his spot in the Armada’s history.
Q: As an Argentinian, is soccer in your blood? “Obviously, there are a lot of soccer fields in Argentina, just a few blocks away. Behind my house in Casilda, Argentina, there was a really nice field, well-kept, good grass, with lights and everything that I would always ask my father to go to when I was younger. So he started bringing me there, but then it became a constant thing. I trained there all the time with my father and sometimes even by myself. It was kind of an obsession. After a while, he would just drop me off after school and pick me up in the afternoon. My family has always supported me and my career. My family is why I am where I am today. Soccer has taken me places and got me to where I am now. Soccer has also given me some rough times that I truly thought about quitting, but I never did. Honestly, it has made me stronger and even a better player. Through the support of my family, the experiences that I have had playing the game have brought me to here. So yes, soccer is a passion and a lifestyle for me.”
“Obviously there were a lot of emotions going through me at that time. I finished like a number nine, but really I am a center back.” Q: Have you always been a defender? “Honestly, I have always opted out for the defense. That is where I have always stood out and played my best from the beginning. So that is really my spot on the field. I have played it my whole life. If you make a mistake as a defender it could cost you a goal. It can be non-rewarding whereas forwards score a goal and get all the glory. As a defender, you don’t get as much recognition, but I love playing that position. We have a saying on the defense: ‘I take responsibility for those who don’t want to.’” Q: You have played around the world. Which area had the biggest impact on you? “Out of all the different places that I have played, Vélez Sarsfield is the one that brought me in and helped me develop as a player and a person the most. They taught me so much that I really identify with that club. That is where I probably developed my defensive talent. Also, here in Jacksonville, I have developed a lot. The game is very different here. It is a bit more challenging because the styles of play, the changes I have had to adapt to and the cultural changes. The time I spent in Italy was very short, and I really didn’t get to experience Italian football, 10.3.2015 Match day
so it did not influence me quite as much as Armada FC and Vélez Sarsfield have.” Q: You have had to adapt to a lot of changes since you signed with the Armada. How do you stay resilient? “It is very difficult to adapt to changes like we have gone through. Especially, seeing as it is the first year of the club. All the coaches have brought different styles of playing and different points of view. As a player, it is hard to adapt to this. But when change comes, you have to see it as something good, take everything into consideration and give it your best. That is part of being a professional soccer player. Enduring change it is what makes us stronger. The league we play in is very difficult. There really is no standout team that hasn’t lost a game. Anybody can truly beat anybody. That is what makes it so challenging.” Q: You had the honor of scoring the first goal ever for the club in February. What feelings come from getting this milestone for the Armada? “Obviously there were a lot of emotions going through me at that time. I finished like a number nine, but really I am a center back. It is one of my happiest moments because playing a team like the Philadelphia Union is an opportunity that you don’t get all the time. It feels amazing to know that I will always be part of the club’s history. It is a good feeling and a very special moment for me.”
QUICK FACTS: FABRICIO ORTIZ
Ortiz began his career at Club Atletico Alumni in his hometown of Casilda, Argentina. At 17 he joined the prestigious Buenos Aires’ Club Atletico Velez Sarsfield where he spent the next five seasons working his way up through ranks before joining Italian club F.C. Misano for a short spell before returning to Argentina and Club Atletico Aprendices Casildense.

Tonight’s opponent FC EDMONTON
Affectionately referred to as the the Eddies by the faithful soccer supporters of the Alberta-based club, FC Edmonton was the first of the two Canadian teams to join the modern-era North American Soccer League. Launched in 2010 by Tom and Dave Fath, owners of the Fath Group of Companies, the team plays its home matches at Clarke Stadium, which holds a capacity of 5,000. Scottish-born head coach Colin Miller, a former Glasgow Rangers and Doncaster Rovers defender, holds more than 60 caps as player with the Canadian National Team and has served as the interim head coach twice.
OH, CANADA
It has been more than six months since the Armada last battled FC Edmonton (7W-4D-7L, 9-7-12 Combined) in the opening match of the 2015 Spring Season. Needless to say, a lot has happened since April, and the Eddies currently find themselves in a prime position to compete for the coveted fourth playoff spot. Expect to see former Minnesota United goalkeeper Matt VanOekel offer a solid effort between the posts. The two men looking to cause trouble from the Eddies’ wings will likely be a combination of Thiago de Freitas, Dustin Corea and Cristian Raudales, with the loan striker, Tomi Ameobi, to lead the pack-in campaign in a likely 4-1-4-1 formation.

SOCCER 101 A GUIDE TO THE G AME OBJECTIVE Two teams, with 11 players per side, compete to score goals while protecting their own from the opposing team. Goals are scored by putting the ball in the opposing team’s goal box.
MATCH LENGTH Matches have two 45-minute halves played without stopping the clock, with a 15-minute halftime break. At the end of 45 minutes, the referee adds on “stoppage time” to make up for any delays during play. Matches can end in ties, but usually in tournaments or playoff games, there must be a winner. Ties are broken with two 15-minute overtime periods, followed by a penalty shootout.
The Shootout Five players from each team take turns shooting on goal with only the goalkeeper. Whichever team scores the most goals wins. If the tie is not broken after the 2 rounds, five more players are chosen and the shootout becomes sudden death, where the first team to score a goal wins.

Positions Forwards – Their main responsibility is to score goals.

D
D
D
D G
Midfielders – They move up and down the field as they contribute to both the defensive and offensive efforts. Defenders – The last line of defense other than the goalkeeper. Goalkeeper – The only players allowed to use their hands and arms.
No touching Players can use any part of their body except their hands and arms. The goalkeeper is the only player allowed to touch the ball with the hands and arms, but only while he is in his own penalty box.
Set Pieces Throw-ins – The opponents are awarded a throw-in when a player causes the ball to go out of play. One player is allowed to throw the ball in towards one of their teammates, resuming play. Goal kicks – A goal kick is awarded to a team when the opposing team does not score but causes the ball to cross the defending team’s goal line on either side of the net. Corner kicks – A corner kick is given to the attacking team when the ball crosses the goal line, having been last touched by a player on the defending team. Free kicks – There are two types of free kicks – indirect
and direct. Indirect free kicks are for less severe fouls and must be touched by another player before entering the goal. Direct free kicks are given for serious fouls and are allowed to enter the goal without being touched by any other player.
The Cards Yellow Card – Penalty for committing a dangerous or
unfair foul.
Red Card – Penalty for continuing to play with excessive
aggression, also ejects them from the game and disqualifies the player their next match. Their team will be forced to play the rest of the game without their ejected player and is not allowed to substitute another player in.
The Offside Rule Offside Position (OK) – A player is in the offside
X X
position if they are ahead of the ball, in the opponents’ half of the field and there are fewer than two opponents even with or ahead of him.
O
Offside (NOT OK) – A player who is in the offside position becomes offside when they participate in the play when they interfere with an opponent or otherwise tries to take advantage of being in the offside position.
Exceptions – It’s not a foul for a player in an offside position if he receives the ball directly from a throw-in, a corner kick or a goal kick.

BOB’S BOOTROOM with Bob Veal The Armada’s first year in the NASL has been a year of opportunities, missed chances, coaching changes and disappointing results on the road. Having said that, the home game results are extremely encouraging much to the delight of the fan base. With four games remaining – three at home and one on the road – there is still a mathematical chance of the Armada making the playoffs. The Armada are now in the Eric Dade phase of the season. In addition to getting a grip on players’ technical abilities, Dade has to find a way to win. His first game against the Tampa Bay Rowdies, a 2-0 win at home, showed us that he is willing to allow the players freedom of expression. His more defensive formation of 4-2-3-1 also showed us that the Armada needed to be more defensive minded. This same formation was also employed in the home game against Indy Eleven, resulting in a 1-1 draw. However, playing with 10 men for most of the second half, showed the Armada it was hard to press forward for goals without leaving gaps in the defense. Our third game for the new coach on the road against the Carolina RailHawks, a 3-0 loss, was disappointing, however, with three key players away on international duty, it is hard to introduce players from the bench and not expect some sort of impact on the defense and the ability to make chances up front. As the team battles to finish the season on a high note, the keys for Dade, will be to keep working on his beliefs and remain open to ideas. For the players, they will need step up to the plate, be more responsible for their roles in the system and take accountability for their own performances. Catch Bob Veal on the Armada Radio Show Fridays on Sports Radio 930 at 3 p.m. and on Bob’s Bootroom during Armada Kickoff at 11 p.m. on CW17. 67
