The Jacksonville Armada FC has rolled out a fun incentive program to encourage supporters to renew their season tickets early for the 2016 North American Soccer League season. Inspired by the club’s 30-foot inflatable kraken mascot, Squid Vicious, the “30 Days of ‘Kraken’ Prizes” is a season tickets renewal incentive program that will give fans the chance to win valuable prizes each day from Oct. 15 to Nov. 13 as they “re-enlist” their support for the Armada and renew their season tickets for the 2016 season. Every day during the 30-day renewal incentive program, one season ticket “crew member” who has renewed for the 2016 season will be drawn at random to will win a special prize. The Armada will be giving away a treasure trove of exclusive prizes including player-autographed Armada memorabilia, VIP pre-match party passes, gift cards from Armada FC partners, a chance to meet Armada FC owner Mark Frisch and a trip to the 2016 NASL Championship Final. Each morning, the daily award will be showcased on Armada social media channels. Winners will be announced via social media and notified directly to accept their prize. Armada FC season ticket members will become eligible the day following the receipt of their renewal. Those who have already renewed are automatically eligible for the contest. Giveaways are limited to one grand prize per account for the month. Current 2015 season ticket crew members will have received their renewal packets as well as an email with instructions on how to renew online. The quicker a season ticket member renews their tickets for 2016, the more opportunities they have to win. New 2016 season tickets packages start at $170 for 17 matches, $10 per match, and a new, low-rate supplemental parking plan is available for all 16 of the Armada’s 2016 NASL matches, plus the 2016 preseason match against the Philadelphia Union at Community First Park in February next year.

COACH’S NOTES

Interim Head Coach Eric Dade I would like to start by congratulating everyone on that spectacular win last Saturday. The boys showed their ability to fight through adversity and took the game back to earn one of the most exciting victories that I have ever been part of. The fans created an unbelievable atmosphere at Community First Park, and it was truly something special. This is one of the biggest reasons that I love coaching the game. With that victory, we have not only kept the drive for the playoffs alive but built our confidence as well. We have a huge task ahead of us and tonight’s match is just the beginning. We have a shorter week to prepare for a long stretch of games. We are taking on an Ottawa side that is on top of the Fall Season table and currently on a 10-match unbeaten streak. Ottawa knows the importance of defense, and it has a superb back line and even more impressive shot stopper in goalkeeper Romuald Peiser. Coach Dos Santos has put together an impressive string of results based on a playing a very defensive game in our league. However, we remain strong and confident about our chances. We also have the absolute pleasure to play in front of you, our amazing fans, tonight as we take on this challenge. As you can tell by our results at home, our fans certainly make a difference. We have not lost a single match in the Fall Season at Community First Park. The support of this city is spectacular. So, again, thank you for attending tonight’s match as we continue the battle. 17

‘Pepp Talk’ With Cole Pepper So You’re Sayin’ There’s a Chance... With 11 days left in the North American Soccer League regular season, the Armada are still in contention for The Championship. Let that sink in. In a year where the Armada has failed to win on the road, hired and fired a new coaching staff, let the general manager go and lost, I-don’t-know-how-many games to players on international duty, injury and suspension – with all of that in its first year – the club still has a mathematical chance of making the NASL postseason! Regardless of what happens the rest of this year, this bodes well for the future. Let’s take a look at how a couple of expansion teams performed in the past in the North American Soccer League: Last year, the Ottawa Fury finished eighth out of 10 teams and Indy Eleven finished ninth; both teams were 13 points from the final Championship spot. The Armada, on the other hand, sits seven points from the final Championship spot with three matches remaining. On the field, Ottawa certainly took a step forward in its second year. So far this year, Fury FC has rolled through the Fall Season and need just one point the rest of the season to clinch the Fall Season championship. It currently leads the New York Cosmos by two points in the chase for the best overall record in 2015, which would allow Fury FC to host its semifinal and final Championship matches. Attendance is up in Ottawa, and their head coach, Mark Dos Santos, was courted by an MLS team and will be leaving after the season. While Indy Eleven has not enjoyed the same success on the field that the Fury have, Indy is still mathematically alive for the postseason in this, its second year in the NASL. The Eleven also continues to lead the league in attendance. Now consider the Armada, who, with a strong close, can use a mid-table finish as a spring board to 2016. The supporters have been amazing, attendance and business support are models for new clubs coming into the NASL and best of all, there is a strong desire by the club leadership to do even better, on and off the field in 2016. I almost can’t wait. Almost. 19

All in the Family As a key component in the Armada FC midfield, Lucas Scaglia has brought a trademark intensity and proficiency to Jacksonville that is simply spectacular. Scaglia learned to play soccer in the streets of Rosario, Argentina, while playing with his childhood friend and teammate, FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi. His love of the game, tactical talent and skillful ball handling is an almost unmistakable presence at any Armada FC match.

Q: How did you find your place on the field? I normally find myself in a midfield position. It is nice to play with someone else in that same position, which is what we have been playing lately. I have always played in the midfield ever since I was young. Q: How would you describe your path to becoming a professional soccer player? As some people may know, my father was a professional soccer player in Argentina. He played the same position that I play now. It is in the culture of our people in Argentina. Football is a lifestyle and that is definitely true in my family. I started in the Academy at Newell’s Old Boys when I was just four years old. That is where I learned the most and progressed up through the system. It is also where I first started playing professionally.

“The main thing is that I grew up with this passion for soccer. I don’t think that I am a leader so much; I just have such a passion for the game.” Q: Why do you think the Armada FC has created such a family atmosphere here? Actually, every single team that I have been involved in has been a family. It is something that the coaches have really emphasized. It is because of a mutual respect that we have for each other. It is the first and most important thing that a team needs to have. That is how we bring people together and keep players playing up. Q: How does playing in this league differ from the others you have played in? Every league has its similarities. We are all professionals no matter what league we play in, and the coaching level is as organized as it is in other leagues. Honesty, I am really happy with this league. We have two new teams, Miami FC and Puerto Rico FC, coming into the league next year. The players that are coming into 10.3.2015 Match day

QUICK FACTS: Lucas Scaglia this league, such as Raúl, are just getting better and better. I think growth is important. As long as we continue to grow, the league will only get more competitive and this already a very competitive league. Q: You’ve never worn the captain’s armband, but you play a real leadership role on the team. Do you feel you have a natural leadership? The main thing is that I grew up with this passion for soccer. I don’t think that I am a leader so much; I just have such a passion for the game. So having had a chance to play with some great players and coaches in my career, I feel that my passion has become more organized. I have become more tactical. Every time I move somewhere, I become a better player. Q: Congratulations on your new baby! Does having a youngster born here in Jacksonville make you feel closer to your new home? Of course. I have made a real connection with this city. I play for this city as well. I always think that when you play for a team, you are also defending that city when you go on the road or play at home. There is a sense of pride in play here. Now the Jacksonville Armada represents the best in Jacksonville. We are all proud of our club.

Scaglia, 27, arrived at the Armada FC after spending 2014 with Croatian club HNK Rijeka and having played extensively in Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Greece and Spain. He made his professional debut in 2007 with Argentinian side Newell’s Old Boys and spent three seasons with the club. From 2010-11, Scaglia played for Greek clubs Panserraikos, Trikala and Kallonis.

FUN FACTS:

Q: Who eats the most on the team? (Laughing) That is the easiest question you could have asked me. Sebastian Evers, definitely. It’s actually impressive. He is always eating.

Tonight’s opponent OTTAWA FURY FC

Founded in 2011, the Ottawa Fury FC is one of two Canadian teams and the second to enter the North American Soccer League in the modern era. While the team was announced in June 2011 as Ottawa Fury SC, the club competed in the USL PDL until their 24,000 seat TD Place Stadium at Lansdowne was finished in July 2014. The club has is owned by the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group was granted the expansion four years ago. Ottawa has three passionate supporters groups - the Bytown Boys, Stony Monday Riot and Fury Ultras - who fill the stands at TD Place Stadium and add to the experience on home matchdays. The club also operates a Junior Academy for U16-U17 Boys, a Senior Academy for U18-U19 Boys and an Elite Girls Academy for girls U16 and above.

QUEST TO CLAIM THE FALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Ottawa Fury’s 2015 Fall Season campaign appears to be best summed up by the old saying, “defense wins championships.” Despite finishing ninth in the 2015 Spring Season, Fury FC has stormed into the top of the Fall table and continues to have one of the best defensive records in the league, conceding only one goal in its last three matches. Ottawa has already earned its first-ever playoff appearance and is well on its way to capturing the Fall Season Championship. Ottawa is currently on a 10-game unbeaten streak in addition to keeping 14 clean sheets all year.Fury FC head coach Marc Dos Santos is expected to stack a strong defense in front of his league-leading goalkeeper Romuald Peiser. On the offensive front, Ottawa is known for taking advantage of opponents’ offensive mistakes and scoring on counterattacks led by forwards Tom Heienmann, Paulo Junior and Andrew Wiedeman.

BOB’S BOOTROOM with Bob Veal After a productive, hard-working performance last Saturday night against FC Edmonton, the Armada’s chance of earning the final spot in The Championship is still alive. The players showed tenacity, discipline and a “never give up” attitude. The Armada started the game at full strength with the return of Mechack Jerome, Pascal Millien and Shawn Nicklaw from international duty, which represents the complete right side of the team. Interim head coach Eric Dade continued his quest to have a strong mobile defense and free up the offense to roam the flanks and middle of the field, leaving Alhassane Keita up front to cause havoc to the FC Edmonton defense. During the first half, this strategy worked well, creating room down the flanks, which Nicklaw exploited with long runs. It also created room in the middle for Jaime Castrillón to be the playmaker for Jemal Johnson and Millen. Castrillón also found space to get into the six-yard box and get some shots on target. The defensive back four stayed strong and sustained some good attacking play from FC Edmonton. Behind the back four, goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo was sound and instilled confidence in his defense. Lucas Scaglia and Nicolas Perea in the defensive midfield were the link between the defense and the forwards, they were all over the field making tackles, getting forward to support the attack and covering each other. A 1-0 lead at halftime was well deserved, and the second half was anticipated to be more of the same. However, Scaglia, the engine room of the team in that defensive midfield roll, did not come out for the second half due to injury and was replaced by Akeil Barrett, an attacking forward. This changed the strategy a little with Castrillón dropping back to cover Scaglia’s position. Early in the second half, Keita received another yellow card and the red followed, taking the Armada down to 10 men. This sparked FC Edmonton into a flurry of attacks and the equalizer, and soon after, the go-ahead goal. Unlike previous games, the Armada rallied and forced a penalty which brought them level. The Armada play from here on out showed confidence and an attitude to win. Barrett again ran at the defense and scored the game-winning goal for the Armada. It was a much better performance from back to front and some superb goalkeeping from Gallardo. Catch Bob Veal on the Armada Radio Show Fridays on Sports Radio 930 at 3 p.m. and on Bob’s Bootroom during Armada Kickoff at 11 p.m. on CW17. 67
