Dario Sala, General Manager
@ArmadaFCAdmiral
Since teaming up with owner Mark Frisch to form Sunshine Soccer Group and the Jacksonville Armada FC in 2013, general manager Dario Sala has been at the forefront of creating the club’s blueprint for success. He has been responsible for crafting a roster that has allowed the club to be a strong contender in just its first year, challenging for the Spring Season championship until the ninth week. A former professional goalkeeper with more than 20 years of experience across the world’s most elite leagues, Sala played in more than 500 official games and 30 international matches, including the 2003 Copa Libertadores and leading FC Dallas to a first-place finish in 2006. At the 2003 Copa Libertadores, he was the least scored-upon goalkeeper and led his team through a historic run. After retiring from player soccer in 2010, Sala developed into one of America’s most sought-after player agents and talent scouts and founded a successful sports marketing company, Dario Sala Soccer, LLC.
Steve Livingstone, President

Livingstone who hails from Glasgow, grew up avidly following the Scottish and English Premier and Champions Leagues, and was a season ticket owner with his home team, Glasgow Celtic F.C., and the Scotland National team. He directed the successful brand and competitive launch of the Armada FC, which debuted in front of 14,000 against the MLS Philadelphia Union at EverBank Field on February 7, 2015 and set a modern-day NASL regular season attendance record of 16,164 against FC Edmonton on April 4.

COACH’S NOTES
Head Coach Guillermo Hoyos
We have a long week ahead of us and preparation is key as we head into to these two matches. Both these teams have got the best of us before, but we are not focused on our shortcomings. We are focused on playing our style of football and mounting a formidable attack against these opponents. Our two opponents this week, the Carolina RailHawks and Atlanta Silverbacks, are both playing very strong offensively so far this Fall Season. Atlanta strikers Jaime Chavez and Pedro Mendes have already put our team to the test this season. And Carolina’s Nacho Novo is a very aggressive, and high-scoring forward whom we expect will put a lot of pressure on our backline. However, if we stay true to our style and continue to counter these attacks, as we did against a tough Minnesota team two weeks ago, we can dominate the possession game and yield a positive result. As I have mentioned before, the philosophy of this team is something that involves the entire community. We believe in Mark Frisch‘s vision, and are creating a winning mentality that involves everyone that attends our games, comes to our events and supports this great club. Playing like we do at Community First Park really defines the type of team we are building and club that we are. The support is obviously something very good for the club and maturity of the team. If we continue to work hard, victory will be all of ours to celebrate soon. 11

‘Pepp Talk’
with Cole Pepper I have this fantasy. In my fantasy, the Armada have all of their players fit and available for action. Then, it comes down to deciding the starting XI for the match. Should Akeil Barrett start or come off the bench? Can Barrett and Marcos Flores both play together at the same time? Three or four at the back? The Armada last had all of their horses on April 25, their third-ever North American Soccer League match in St. Petersburg against the Tampa Bay Rowdies. In that match, they got off 22 shots, the most in team history. While it isn’t all about the attack, I think all Armada fans would love to see 22 shots, win or lose. We’ve seen some signs of that explosive attack as Pascal Millien and Akeil Barrett returned against Minnesota last week. Once Flores and Matt Bahner both return, the Armada could field perhaps the fastest team in the NASL and a side that could play a style that head coach Guillermo Hoyos has referred to as “revolutionary” in this league. But the practical question is when will it happen? All teams deal with injuries, and teams with good players deal with being at less than 100 percent, but that’s especially difficult on an expansion team that is trying to develop young and local talent while also setting the foundation of a system that will win matches in the NASL. That’s the give and take of having players capable of playing internationally. So we wait. Perhaps one day, we’ll see the Armada fully loaded. When we do, I expect it will make for a memorable night. 19

all in the Family GAFA’S SOUTHERN COMFORT
Armada defender and San Diego native Jordan Gafa has come a long way to call Jacksonville his new home. After a stellar college career with a 2011 NCAA Division I National Championship and two other College Cup appearances in 2009 and 2010 at the University of North Carolina, Gafa came to Florida to pursue his professional career in the North American Soccer League, spending two seasons with the Tampa Bay Rowdies in 2013 and 2014 before signing with the Armada in March.
Q: You are a West Coast guy at heart. How did you end up playing on the East Coast? I was fortunate enough to receive a scholarship to the University of North Carolina in 2008 after being recruited. I think committing to play there was one of the best decisions of my life. I was at UNC four and half years and redshirted my freshman year. We went to the NCAA National Championship game twice and the final four (College Cup) every year that I was there. We won the National Championship in 2011, which was really the pinnacle of everything for me there. We set a lot of records there. I was the first California kid they (UNC) had in their soccer program. I actually did a tournament in Florida, NIKE friendlies and club, and was able to showcase myself with my youth club Arsenal (San Diego.) I came home to a message on my answering machine from the University of North Carolina saying they were interested in me. They flew me out there, I committed and the rest is history. I have never looked back really. I stayed after college and played in the Premier Development League in North Carolina. All and all, I lived there for about five years, so I’m very familiar with Carolina. I love it there.
It is more of a family here than at other clubs. The club really makes you feel right at home. I think it starts right from the top with Mark Frisch. The weather (on the East Coast) is something that I have had to because the humidity is something I had never experienced. Shawn (Nicklaw) and I talk about all the time. When summer comes around, it is always different in Florida. But the people are amazing out here, and there is a real southern comfort to Jacksonville. Q: You and Shawn Nicklaw are a bit like the class clowns with your constant joking. How did you fellow San Diegans get to be so close? Basically, he is like a brother to me. We played at the same youth club from the time we were 10 years old and we were finally able to play on the same team when I turned 17 and I was able to play up a year at Nomads (San Diego Youth Club). We actually won the National Red Bull League championship in 2007, which was the year before Shawn went off to college. Through mutual friends on the teams, traveling together and our parents being friends, we have always just had a bond. When he went to Europe, we lost touch for a little bit because we were so far away on different schedules. In the offseason, we started talking and he told me about this new team called the Armada. Next thing you know, the Armada and I were in talks about coming out and earning a trial. I was lucky enough that I was able to work hard enough to earn a spot. I didn’t know he had been signed until I arrived. 7.31.2015 Match day
QUICK FACTS: JORDAN GAFA We quote movies constantly and are always on the same page with our joking … at least we think we are funny in our own heads. Q: What movie do you quote the most? Step Brothers – definitely! The Sandlot and Tommy Boy are good ones as well. Q: Why is the Jacksonville Armada FC right for you? It is more of a family here than at other clubs. The club really makes you feel right at home. I think it starts right from the top with Mark Frisch. When he comes into the pregame or even after a locker room after a tie or a loss, he is right behind us, and he always reminds us of what we are playing for. You don’t get that at other teams, at least not in my experience. Another thing that caught my eye was all the big plans they had for this club, how fast they were executing it and how they are even still continuing to execute it. Averaging over 8,000 really is unbelievable from my perspective, especially with all of the competition in Florida. I think our sales staff and front office are some of the hardest working people in any soccer organization that I have seen. It is pretty impressive. The best part is that the players and the coaching staff sincerely appreciate everything. I definitely feel that there is that family feeling across the club. Our fans are amazing. Whether it is Section 904, all the families that come out to our games and even just driving around town, there is just so much support. It is great to feel that recognition and have that support, especially with all the other sports in town.
Gafa is a defender from San Diego, California who played the 2013 and 2014 season with the Tampa Bay Rowdies. Gafa starred for perennial NCAA Division I powerhouse University of North Carolina from 2008-12 and was part of three-straight College Cup teams in 2009, 2010 and 2011. He helped the Tar Heels take home the national title in 2011.
FUN FACTS:
Q: If the Armada FC had a reality show, what would it be called and who would be the stars of it? ‘Fleet Life’ - Shawn would have to be in there because he is such a character. I’d throw Keita in there for sure. He’s a great guy and funny too. I would put (Lucas) Trejo in there too. Ramy (Ramak Safi) would add some good drama. (Joseph) Toby would be good because you can grind his gears a bit. Oh yeah, definitely Jemal Johnson, another character. And last but not least, Marcos (Flores) would serenade us the whole time with his music.

Wednesday’s Opponent CAROLINA RAILHAWKS
Founded in 2006, the Carolina RailHawks began as an expansion side in the third division USL and merged into the NASL upon its founding in 2010. The RailHawks play all of their home matches at the 10,000-seat WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C., Since 2011, former Southhampton and QPR striker and Northern Ireland international Colin Clarke has been at the helm. The club has had a relatively successful tenure in the NASL, making it to semifinals in 2011 and 2012 and finishing second overall in 2013. The RailHawks managed to reach the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals by defeating Major League Soccer sides Los Angeles Galaxy and Chivas USA in 2013 and 2014. The club competes in an annual rivalry derby, referred to as the Southern Derby, with the Atlanta Silverbacks and USL’s Charleston Battery.

Armada at Community First Park on May 30 in the clubs’ first meeting. All four goals were scored in the first half, and the RailHawks switched their focus to Biggest: a smothering defense in the second half to hand Jacksonville its first loss at Win 4-0 (A) home. Armada FC Carolina’s robust attack is led by star Spanish striker Nacho Novo, who has climbed up the list of leading scorers throughout the season. Novo has scored seven goals in 11 matches, and Neil Hlavaty and Tiyi Shipalane are right behind him with four goals each. Needless to say, the key to beating head coach Colin Clarke’s squad is shutting down the RailHawks aggressive assault on net. Closing the passing lanes, which typically steer straight out to Novo, who serves as the lone striker in their typical 4-5-1 formation, could decide the outcome of tonight’s contest.

Saturday’s Opponent ATLANTA SILVERBACKS
The Atlanta Silverbacks FC were founded in 1998 as the Atlanta Ruckus and renamed Silverbacks later that year after Willie B., a Western lowland gorilla who lived at the Atlanta Zoo for 31 years. The team has played their home games at Atlanta Silverbacks Park, a 5000-seat soccer specific stadium since 2005. The club competed in the former USL A-League until 2004 when they joined the USL First Division. The Silverbacks reached the USL Championship Game in 2007, falling to the Seattle Sounders. The team took a hiatus in 2009-2010 and returned as members of the NASL in 2011. The club won the 2013 NASL Spring Season Championship to earn a place in the Championship match against the New York Cosmos before falling 1-0. The Silverbacks reached quarterfinals of the 2014 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, defeating Major League Soccer’s Real Salt Lake and Colorado Rapids.
MATCHUP HISTORY
Tonight’s meeting between the Silverbacks and Armada FC will be the third and final matchup of the season but the first in Jacksonville at Community First Park. The Silverbacks lead the series, 1W-1D-0L, with a 1-0 win on July 11 and a 1-1 draw on May 16. Atlanta’s 2015 campaign is turning out to be a story of two seasons. While the Silverbacks only notched one win in the Spring Season and finished last in the table, it appears they have found their groove as one of the top performers early on in the Fall Season.

BOB’S BOOTROOM with Bob Veal
The Armada’s season is getting to a crucial stage where we need points to control our own destiny. It is a position where we do not have to rely on other teams’ performances to dictate our final position in the Combined, Spring and Fall Seasons. The team is working hard on all the aspects of their game, as well as working on the system and tactics the coaching staff requires. The fitness of the players, apart from a few nagging injuries, is not in question. We are not seeing tired legs or any teams that we cannot keep up with for 90 minutes. In many games, the Armada have been so close to winning games they have tied and losing games they were looking to tie. The Armada are fundamentally playing the system the coach is teaching – playing out the back, playing high with overlapping fullbacks and maintaining possession in the diamond formation in the middle of the field and creating a strong, attacking style of play. With this in mind, the Armada have deviated from this on certain occasions, playing long balls and playing more direct, which has some created fast breaks. They have also played a nine-man defense to shut teams out. I believe this is the Armada’s blueprint and will produce results. Having said all this, the Armada now need to: 1. Cut out the mistakes in defense. 2. Defend the far post and stop ball watching. 3. Mark closer and get in front of attacking players in the 18-yard box. 4. Have midfielders pick up opponents making deep runs into the defense. 5. Adopt a frame of mind of not making senseless tackles, especially when there is no chance of getting the ball. 6. Have a stronger sense of discipline and responsibility when on the field. Catch Bob Veal on the Armada Radio Show Fridays on Sports Radio 930 at 3 p.m. and on Bob’s Bootroom during Armada Kickoff at 11 p.m. on CW17.
