TONIGHT’S Events Presented By MILITARY APPRECIATION NIGHT

During tonight’s match we will honor the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces as part of our Military Appreciation Night, presented by Key Auto. The Armada FC will honor all five branches of the armed forces throughout the night, and members of the military will raise the Armada flag and join captains at midfield for the ceremonial coin toss prior to kickoff. In addition, the first 7,000 fans who enter Community First Park received Cannon Sticks presented by Key Auto. Show your support for the Armada by wavying them throughout tonight’s match.

HALFTIME SHOW

For both matches, halftime will feature a number of spectacular soccer-style promotions including the Winn-Dixie Bubble Battle, Brumos Grand Prix, Subway Tailgater of the Match and Moe’s T-Shirt Toss. As usual, the Armada players will sign autographs at pitch side immediately following the match.

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP

Tonight’s match is the third and final meeting between the Armada FC and the San Antonio Scorpions. The series is tied at one a piece, but the Armada FC are looking to avenge last week’s 1-0 defeat in the Alamo city. Jacksonville will look to shut down the Scorpions’ counterattack and deny scoring opportunities to key forwards such as last week’s game-winning scorer Billy Forbes.

A former professional goalkeeper with more than 20 years of experience across the world’s most elite leagues, Sala played in more than 500 official games and 30 international matches, including the 2003 Copa Libertadores and leading FC Dallas to a first-place finish in 2006. At the 2003 Copa Libertadores, he was the least scored-upon goalkeeper and led his team through a historic run. COACH’S NOTES

Head Coach Guillermo Hoyos

Welcome back to Community First Park. We are coming down to the last stretch of our inaugural season and, as always, it brings this team so much pleasure to be able to play in front of you, our home support. While we pride ourselves on being successful at Community First Park, I think it is key to always stick to the same mentality. I have said it many times before, I truly believe that we have to play one match at a time. While it seems like a modest approach to match planning, I believe it is a crucial approach to being successful in the long term. This will be our third and final match against the San Antonio Scorpions, so they are a team that we are very familiar with by this point in the season. Despite their position in the standings, we will not take any team for granted. We will compete as if this was any other game on schedule, with one goal in mind - capturing another three points. Coach Marcina is a terrific leader, and he has armed his crew with an arsenal of talented players. Omar Cummings is also a terrific goal scorer. They have a very strong midfield in Rafael Castillo and Marvin ChĂ vez, who will prepare for this match extremely hard. However, we intend to continue our hard work and maintain our development. The evolution of the team is a never-ending process. This is what will separate us from the rest of the league, and the support of fantastic fans like yourself is what will continue to fuel our success. 11

‘Pepp Talk’

with Cole Pepper Tonight’s match at home against the San Antonio Scorpions has suddenly become as close to a “must-win” match as the Armada have on the schedule. Why? It’s the only home match at Community First Park within the next month. The Armada have been very good at home, only losing once this year in nine matches. The North American Soccer League is bunched up like rush hour on Butler Blvd. with every team either in line for a postseason spot or within six points. That’s good and bad. Sitting in 10th place on the table, the Armada have a lot of teams to jump over, but if they string a few wins together, suddenly things will look very rosy. When looking at the schedule, tonight’s home fixture stands out like a lone island in the sea. It’s the only home match until Sept. 26. After that, the Armada finish the season with five home matches in seven. If a late season push for the Championship is to happen, Jacksonville must be in position to make a move. That means finding a way to win on the road (something the team hasn’t done yet) and continuing to be dominant at home. With Shawn Nicklaw training with the Guam National Team, the Armada will once again be at less than 100 percent, even in the unlikely event that the five regulars who missed last week’s match return (Marcos Flores, Matt Bahner, Bochy Hoyos, Keita and Lucas Trejo). It’s clear that the Armada will have to continue to improve their bench and win on the road. But none of that will matter if they don’t continue to turn in top-rate performances at home at Community First Park. 19

in the line of fire Armada FC defender Lucas Trejo isn’t scared to get his boots dirty. The veteran Argentinian defender has played with clubs in different countries across the world. After years of guarding the backline, Trejo knows when to tackle hard and sacrifice his body to keep his team in the game. Now, in a new country with a new club, Trejo is looking to use his versatility to take the Jacksonville Armada to a new level.

Q: Playing defense isn’t the most desirable position, especially for young players. What made you want to become a defender? Actually, it was when I debuted in the first division of Greece with Atromitos F.C. I actually used to play as a “10” (center midfielder), which is a scoring position. Coach (Guillermo) Hoyos needed someone who could play defense well along with Bochy (Hoyos). He wanted someone who could play with his feet and someone tactical that could support the defense. Since that point, I have always played in the back. Q: There is a real family atmosphere here at the Armada. Why do you think everyone from all these cultures mix so well?

It (soccer) is bigger than I expected it to be here in Jacksonville. I really like that there is room to grow. It means there is a lot to accomplish, and the Armada are going to make an impact. The secret to all of that is Coach Hoyos. He has the power to bring players together. He keeps the team very close together. He believes that no matter whether we win or lose, respect is the most important thing above everything else. That is why this team is what it is right now. It doesn’t matter what position you play, what job you perform on the team, or who you are, you will find respect from your teammates on this team. We live by this, and I think this is what has brought us so close together. Q: You have said that you would have joined the military if you hadn’t been a footballer. Why is that? I actually have always admired the military. Especially the U.S. Military. When I was growing up in Argentina, I used to watch movies about the military here in the United States. I used to dream about being a part of that. The military here is very prestigious and respectable. I used to think that if soccer didn’t work out for me, I might join the military. 8.29.2015 Match day

QUICK FACTS: Lucas Trejo

Q: What is the biggest difference for you between playing in Greece, Argentina and Jacksonville? Playing in Greece is the closest that I found to playing European-style soccer. They turn on the sprinklers before every single match, so they play an extremely fast pace of soccer. The ball moves really fast on those fields. I would say Argentinian soccer is probably the most competitive. Everyone I played against is so tactical and fairly aggressive. Everyone in Argentina starts playing soccer at such a young age, so everyone has a passion for the game that is amazing. The game is everywhere and everyone plays. I think the soccer in general is really growing here in the United States very fast. The soccer here is trying to mimic the European game, and it is getting better every year. It is bigger than I expected it to be here in Jacksonville. I really like that there is room to grow. It means there is a lot to accomplish, and the Armada are going to make an impact.

Trejo is an Argentinian defender who has played for teams in Greece, Argentina, and Spain. Trejo began his career after being recruited and brought Spain to train in the Spanish development system. He joined Spanish club FC L’Escala. Progressing up though the system before being offered a contract by Greek club Atromitos F.C. Trejo returned to Argentina where he played for a number of clubs before joining Armada FC early in 2015

FUN FACTS: Q: If you and the Armada could play any team in the world, which team would it be? Definitely FC Barcelona! Of course I really admire Leo Messi, so it would be great just to play on the same field as him. Most of all, it would be because of the kind of game that they play. The Barcelona model is what our club is building on. I think it would be amazing to see their style go up against ours.

The ARMADA’s tour of duty The Armada FC took the week to celebrate Military Appreciation Night by making a tour of military bases around Northeast Florida ahead of tonight’s match at Community First Park. “Our great nation would not be what it is without the bravery of our military personnel,” said Armada FC President Steve Livingstone. “We look forward to putting on an event that shows how much our club truly appreciates their hard work in defending our country.” Armada FC players Derek Gebhard and Joseph Toby paid a visit to the United States Coast Guard Southeast base in Mayport on Monday morning to get an up-close look at some of the high-profile ships that guard the nation’s coasts as well as take time to thank each guardsmen for their service. “I really enjoyed the opportunity to visit the Coast Guard base,” Gebhard said. “My dad serves in the Navy, so I have a lot of appreciation and respect for all they do to keep our country safe.” Toby also said how impressed he was with being able to get an up-close look behind the scenes of a military base. “It is amazing to see everything that goes into it,” Toby said. “I already had so much respect and appreciation for the military, but having the opportunity to get a closer look at how hard they work just makes me appreciate their service even more.” On Tuesday night, to support the club’s effort to honor area military men, women and their families, the Armada held a team practice on the base of Naval Air Station Jacksonville for the military personnel and families. After practice, the entire team signed autographs and took photos with those in attendance.

Tonight’s Opponent SAN ANTONIO SCORPIONS

San Antonio, Texas, was awarded the first expansion team in the modern NASL in 2010, and the Scorpions made their debut in the spring season of 2012. Gordon Hartman, the club’s owner, is a well- known philanthropist and San Antonio native. He operates the team with a unique business model, utilizing professional soccer to generate financial support for those with special needs. All of the Scorpions profits go directly to Morgan’s Wonderland, a physical and cognitive special needs amusement park. The Scorpions play at the 8,000 seat soccer-specific stadium, Toyota Field. The club’s loyal supporters group, the Crocketeers, boasts one of the largest memberships in the league with more than 1,000 strong. Despite being the 2015 NASL only NASL club in Texas, the Scorpions have a regional competition referred to Fall Season as the Hill Country Derby with MLS’ FC Dallas and the USL’s Austin Aztex. (Fall)

2014 NASL CHAMPIONS

Last year was a monumental one for Canadian head coach Alen Marcina’s squad, which made its second semifinal appearance and won its first NASL Championship in club history. However, the team has struggled to find its stride in 2015. While the Scorpions may being having trouble gathering victories this season with four wins in the combined standings and only two wins in eight games throughout the fall, they appear to have no problem scoring goals. Ten different players have lit up the scoreboard for San Antonio this season by scoring at least one goal. Leading the club and the league in that category is Jamaican Omar Cummings with 10 goals on the season. Other players in double-digits are Rafael Castillo with four, Billy Forbes with four and César Elizondo with two. Look for San Antonio to come out swinging, pressing the Armada FC offense and looking for openings in the Armada defense. Cummings, Forbes and Castillo all know how to create chances, but the true test for Armada FC may be responding on the counterattack.

BOB’S BOOTROOM with Bob Veal

Are the Armada contenders for one of the final four playoff spots? Soccer fans may remember that Leicester City FC in the English Premier League were dead and buried in last position in January 2015. Yet, with belief and hard work, they not only survived relegation but did it with points to spare. I do believe the Armada can make the top four. I say that because at the moment they are playing some of the best soccer in the NASL. The defense is very tight, Fabricio Ortiz is reading the game very well and making clean and timely tackles. Lucas Trejo is, as always, sound at the back, as well as timing great runs deep into the opponent’s defense, whilst still making sure he gets back to cover the breaks. Joseph Toby does the same on the left side of the field and has speed to get back and defend. The midfield has found the compromise between attacking and covering the fast breaks by the opposition. Lucas Scaglia, at the back of the midfield, is tireless in defending and forming the bridge between defense, midfield and forwards. Jaime Castrillón is playing his best soccer since coming to the club, defending and scoring goals. Akeil Barrett’s speed and skill, in his roll of playing slightly behind the front three, is a breath of fresh air, and he can score goals. Jemal Johnson, Keita and Pascal Millien up front are thriving on the early balls played from midfield and direct from the defense. They look sharp and know where the net is. With 11 games remaining and a possible 33 points up for grabs, the Armada are only a few points outside the top four. The Championship playoffs are certainly well within the Armada’s reach. Catch Bob Veal on the Armada Radio Show Fridays on Sports Radio 930 at 3 p.m. and on Bob’s Bootroom during Armada Kickoff at 11 p.m. on CW17. 67
