I have built a strong relationship with Philadelphia over the years, so it is fitting that our first match is against them. The Union’s CEO and Operating Partner Nick Sakiewicz is a good friend of mine and a good friend of the City of Jacksonville, so again, it is going to be a real treat to be playing against the Union for our first match. It is my extreme pleasure to share tonight’s momentous match with the whole city. I know that you will get behind the team and help us launch the Armada FC into history as we prepare for an exciting inaugural season.

Into the Blue with Jaime Castrillón An essential part of the Armada FC’s midfield, 31-year-old Jaime Castrillón brings a wealth of experience to the team’s attack. He has spent the majority of his career playing in his native Colombia, one of South America’s most passionate soccer countries. A former Major League Soccer standout, Castrillón came to the Colorado Rapids in 2012. In his first year in Colorado, he led the club in scoring with eight goals. Prior to playing in the United States, he compiled more than 70 goals in more than 300 matches and 10 years in the Colombian First Division. Castrillón was instrumental in Independiente Medillín’s 2002 and 2004 Primera A titles and stayed through 2009 before being loaned out to Chinese club Nanchang Bayi for the season. Castrillón has also made 29 appearances for the Colombian national team between 2004 and 2007, scoring five goals for his country. As the Armada FC begins its much-awaited inaugural match against the Philadelphia Union, a team he is familiar with, Castrillón believes his presence on the pitch can give his team an added advantage. Between preparing for the preseason kickoff, Jaime took out time to share some of his experiences and thoughts on the upcoming matches. Jaime, you have played at very high level in several different countries. How does playing in Colombia compare to playing in China? To be honest, they don’t compare. Each country has entirely different styles of play. In China, soccer is more physical. In Columbia, the game is more technical. In Colombia, it’s a little more fun to play. In China, soccer is not the primary sport; maybe the third or fourth. Even basketball is more popular in China; sports with rackets typically dominate in China. You can see that soccer is one of the most important parts of Colombian culture, and it shows in the way that we play. How about South America compared to the United States? In the U.S., it’s very similar to China in that it is physical and fast. Yet, soccer is growing a lot here in the United States. They are bringing a lot of quality players to compete here, and there are a lot of Colombians in the NASL and MLS. The organization is very different – in the teams, on the fields and for the games. I think the United States is very organized with the way things are run. I enjoy that the players always have what they need, and game day operations are very professional. How has your experience been so far with the Armada FC?

2.7.2015 Match day

I enjoy playing here. I am very grateful for the chance to play with the Armada FC in this league. I was looking forward to coming back and playing in the U.S., after not having a chance to play in 2014. I think that is important for the players and team to have high expectations and big goals so that we can accomplish a lot.

Do you have any personal goals here at the Armada FC? As a player, you always try to have goals. On the teams I played with before, I was lucky enough to score some really important goals and want to do the same here in Jacksonville – help the team win and get good results. I want to be an important player for the club so that we can achieve good results in each and every game this season. We want to win the NASL Championship; being a first year team, it will be difficult but not impossible. It’s important that we do well in the U.S. Open Cup. At the end of the day, it’s 11 players against 11 players, and anything can happen. I have high expectations. You have played against the Union before. What do you expect them to bring? We have been preparing for this challenge. They are a very good team. We are all working to be in the best shape possible for this game. We want a great game and good experience against a team of a higher level. It’s an important opportunity for the Armada FC and the city of Jacksonville. We are working toward our season and achieving our goals. Playing an MLS team is just the beginning of our preseason. What does the Armada FC have to do to beat a team from Major League Soccer? The team is expected to work very hard, and we have pretty high expectations. We will have to create some opportunities and then capitalize on those. Tell us a little about yourself. What do you like to do in your off time? Relaxing really. I spend all my free time with my wife and kids. I love playing PlayStation 4 – FIFA is where it is at – on my afternoons off. I consider myself a family man, so hanging out with my family and playing with my kids a lot (is what I like to do). How do you like living in Jacksonville so far? I am very happy to be here; it’s a very nice place. Who doesn’t want to live where there is a beach? In the short time that we have been here, I have found that I like the people, and our kids like the schools. I like the downtown area a lot too. What is your message to the dedicated supporters of the Jacksonville Armada FC? I want to invite everyone in Jacksonville to come out and to support the team. As an Armada FC supporter, you can expect hard work – not only on game days but in our weekly practices as well. It is important for fans to be proud of their team. Come out every weekend to support this team so we can show what we’re all about. With the support of the entire city, we will have a very successful season.

Armada FC and Jacksonville FC announce major youth soccer partnership Clubs come together to develop pathway from youth to pros for kids in Jacksonville and beyond The Armada FC announced an innovative and exciting partnership with one of the city’s biggest youth soccer clubs this week, Jacksonville FC, which will see both clubs come together to establish a dynamic structure of soccer progression in Jacksonville from youth to professional level. The wide-reaching partnership, which includes co-branding of both clubs, will see Armada FC and Jacksonville FC team up to create a continuous “player pathway” soccer structure that seeks to develop the city’s best young male soccer talent at the competitive level of the game, starting immediately with JFC’s Boys U14 DA team and the JFC U12-U18 Elite level teams feeding into the Armada’s growing soccer development program. The new elite teams will be re-titled the JFC Armada. Through the efforts of Armada FC, JFC and JFC’s strategic partners, the goal will be to identify and develop future Armada FC reserve and first team players while nurturing some of the region’s best young soccer talent. To aid in the development of the partnership, Jacksonville FC Executive Director Eric Dade, will join the Armada FC staff as director of soccer development. Both clubs plan to work together in their pursuit of earning all age groups of the United States Soccer Federation’s Development Academy. club in Florida to Jacksonville’s professional soccer representatives in the growing North American Soccer League, Armada FC owner Mark Frisch, said: “We are excited to announce this extensive partnership between Armada FC and one of the best youth soccer programs in the country in JFC. We are looking forward to combining our resources to develop some of our region’s best youth soccer talents and to provide a pathway from recreational youth soccer to the professional ranks through the Armada.” JFC President, David Proehl, said: “JFC is excited to be partnering with Armada FC to help elite level boys aged 12-18 achieve their soccer goals through the USSF Developmental Academy Program. Teaming up with a professional soccer club of the standing and quality of Armada FC has been part of our strategic vision and more importantly, provides players, coaches and referees a proven pathway not offered anywhere else on the First Coast.” Armada FC General Manager, Dario Sala, added: “We are extremely pleased to announce the appointment of Eric Dade as our first director of soccer development. Eric will become an integral part of our coaching staff and brings decades of experience not only in playing and coaching soccer but also specifically in developing youth talent. “We are excited about the possibilities that teaming up with JFC will provide in not only finding future players for the Armada reserve and first teams, but also in further developing the depth of youth learning in our region.” In addition to his new position at Armada FC, Eric Dade will continue to serve as JFC’s Executive Director and US Development Academy Director. He said: “Having the opportunity for JFC to partner with Armada FC is extremely exciting. I am thrilled to be in a position to bridge the relationship between Armada FC and JFC’s youth development. Furthermore, Armada FC’s ownership, front office and soccer staff have demonstrated a passion for the game and are committed to seeing the sport grow. This in every way mirrors who JFC is and what we stand for. This partnership shows that both organizations are dedicated to having a significant impact on players, coaches and soccer enthusiasts in our community”. In addition to the JFC partnership, Jacksonville Armada FC remains committed to supporting youth soccer at all levels as well as all youth soccer clubs in our region and will continue to work with all clubs in addition to JFC.

NO one can dispute the fact that Philadelphia is one of the most passionate sports cities in the country. In 2009, when Major League Soccer awarded the “City of Brotherly Love” its 16th expansion team, many in eastern Pennsylvania believed they were long overdue for professional soccer. In a city with a rich sports heritage that includes 17 championships between four different sports, the Philadelphia Union still have some catching up to do before their fans can become accustomed to a winning tradition. Nevertheless, considering the club’s short history and the moves made in the past year, it may not be long before they are able to attain some serious results

THE CLUB

The club announced its name, crest and colors on May 11, 2009, at Philadelphia’s City Hall, one the city’s most historic and familiar landmarks. The name, Union, alludes to the Union of the Thirteen Colonies, of which Philadelphia was the first capital. The club’s name was the result of a fan vote held in early 2009. The crest incorporated Philadelphia’s rich colonial history and the vital role the city played in the creation of the nation. The Philadelphia Union’s colors are navy blue and gold, representing the Continental Army’s uniforms during the American Revolutionary War. The light blue in the middle of the badge is derived from the civic flag of Philadelphia and is a tribute to the Sons of Ben supporters club. The team’s primary crest is circular, symbolizing unity. The 13 gold stars displayed along the base of the crest represent the original 13 colonies, while the shield’s contour derives from the Philadelphia coat of arms. The rattlesnake featured in the center of the shield pays homage to a political cartoon by Benjamin Franklin that was featured in multiple editions of the Pennsylvania Gazette in the 1750s. The rattlesnake became a national symbol during the American Revolution, representing the danger of disunity and was featured on the Gadsden flag. Union’s secondary logo also features the rattlesnake along with the motto “JUNGITE aut PERITE,” a Latin phrase meaning “JOIN or DIE,” which was displayed by Franklin in his cartoons along with the rattlesnake.

LAST SEASON Despite the ups and downs that are natural to most growing clubs, the Philadelphia Union managed to make the most of their 2014 season. A disappointing 2013 season meant the team needed to strike big in the 2014 MLS Super Draft, which was hosted in their own Philadelphia Convention Center. Some hefty draft picks, as well as the addition of Maurice Edu on loan from Stoke City along with internationals Vincent Nogueira and Cristian Maidana, meant the Union were committed to strengthening the midfield. Midseason signing Algerian goalkeeper Rais M’Bolhi added an extra level of confidence to the back of the Union field, and with veteran MLS forward Sébastien Le Toux returning from a stellar 2013 season, the team was bound to achieve positive results. Despite the positive offseason moves, a slow start to the season prompted a coaching change halfway through the season, and Jim Curtin was named the interim coach. Curtin’s quickly made his mark, making the Union the hottest counterattacking team in 2014. The last stretch of the season from June to September featured the Union’s best play in their short five year history.

THE US OPEN FINAL

The Union achieved their most impressive success to date when they fought their way to the final of the 2014 U.S. Open Cup, the oldest ongoing competition in American soccer. In one of the most memorable performances at their own PPL Park, a spirited crowd of 15,256 chanted on the Union to a narrow 3-1 loss in stoppage time to the Seattle Sounders FC. The Union came out strong and took a 1-0 lead when Maurice Edu headed home a free kick by Cristian Maidana in the 38th minute. The Union controlled the tempo for much of the match and nearly notched the game-winning goal twice in the waning minutes. Ultimately, Seattle landed the shots that put the match away.

THE SONS OF BEN

Philadelphia’s hardcore soccer fanatics were well established before the Union played their first match. The Sons of Ben, whose name alludes to Benjamin Franklin, is recognized for helping establish the momentum that led Major League Soccer to the area. The group has grown to more than 5,000 members and regularly contributes to charitable initiatives in the Delaware Valley soccer community. The Sons of Ben can be seen standing, not sitting, at home and away matches sporting light blue and yellow, colors of the Philadelphia ties flag, and chanting the “C’mon The U!”

A LOOK AHEAD

Going into the team’s sixth season, Philadelphia has compiled a versatile and experienced midfield that are beginning to take shape. Despite losing 2014’s preseason acquisitions Amobi Okugo and Pedro Ribeiro in the 2015 expansion draft, the recent taste of success in the U.S. Open Cup has helped give the club momentum heading into this season. With a young coach in Curtin at the helm and a team stacked with talent, the Union could prove to be a true test for any opponent.
