Flagship Fleet Ushering in an Innovative Way to Support Their Club

Passion is one of the key components to being a hardcore soccer supporter. The Armada FC’s Flagship Fleet has brought passionate support to a new level. The group of dedicated season ticket owners and soccer-loving devotees volunteer their time to help forge Jacksonville’s new team into a vibrant future. Just look on the sidelines before kickoff at Community First Park, at any Armada FC event or even alongside you at any CW17 Watch Party, and you will probably see an enthusiastic Flagship Fleet member passionately cheering for the Armada FC. “It’s just the satisfaction of knowing that we actually play a part of the success on the pitch,” said Dennis Luettich, a Lieutenant in the Flagship Fleet. “Those players can perform at such a high level because of the passion in the stands, and we help bring that to the team.” He added: “The Flagship Fleet is perfect if you are passionate about soccer, want to see this team succeed and thrive here in Jacksonville, and want to have a direct impact on the team sign up. It really is a lot of fun.” Months before a ball was even kicked off at Community First Park, the Flagship Fleet was making appearances, calling for support and building relationships throughout the city. “We are a voice out in the community and for the team itself,” said Fleet Lieutenant and All-Army Men’s Soccer head coach Roye Locklear. “We are out there spreading the word, just getting people on board, becoming season ticket owners and getting behind the team. We are informing the community about the Armada FC and letting them know that is what we are going to bring to Jacksonville. “ In return for their dedicated service, Flagship Fleet members accumulate points and 5.30.2015 Match day

progress up the ranks, which also provide rewards such as exclusive merchandise and team access. As volunteers work more hours, they earn a higher status and more benefits. Earning an “Ensign” ranking means that member can attend the team’s invitational dinner; but if they work their way up to Lieutenant, or even Admiral, a Fleet member has the chance to travel with the team on the road. Angie Simpson, who considers herself the ultimate soccer mom, earned her way to Lieutenant Commander in the Flagship Fleet after putting in more than 170 hours since last fall.

“We are out there spreading the word, just getting people on board, becoming season ticket owners and getting behind the team.“ “It sounds intimidating at first, especially when you hear that you will be making sales calls, but it is really not,” she said. “The season tickets are monthly payments and the sales calls are nothing because you are on the phone calling people who enjoy the sport as well. People are getting really excited and it is really is a blast to talk with fans.” Flagship Fleet members have turned being an Armada FC supporter into much more than just a fan. “Honestly, I have met some really great people that I would not have met otherwise,” Simpson said. “Soccer fans in Jacksonville that I would not have had the opportunity to meet have become really good friends of mine.” *To join the Flagship Fleet call Mike Morando at (904) 516 763 or visit www.armadafc.com

COACHES NOTES

Guillermo Hoyos & JosĂŠ Luis Villarreal It is important that we maintain the attacking mentality. In the past few matches, we have really shown our character and strength. We have been in difficult situations against some of our opponents and have given everything to take something from those games. The team has shown that mentality, which has kept us performing well. Today, we have to be strong again as we face a Carolina RailHawks team in good form. It is the kind of game that both passionate soccer fans and casual supporters alike love to watch, but we have to approach it with the same control and a calm mindset. With the addition of some additional power in Dzenan Catic on loan from Philadelphia Union along with veteran Nacho Novo, I believe that Coach Colin Clarke is definitely looking to build a powerful front line. We expect to see Clarke bring serious pressure with his 4-5-1 formation, which is very similar to the way we have been playing. Although as we have mentioned this before, we believe that possession will make the difference in matchups like this. Even at this point of the NASL Spring Season, we take things on a game-bygame basis. We have several matches left to play, and we have to keep taking points. 17

‘Pepp Talk’

with Cole Pepper Armada FC Proving Their Quality While it may have been premature to expect a Spring Season Championship in the club’s first months of competition in the North American Soccer League, the Armada have shown their quality as an expansion team. It’s easy to celebrate the victories, but let’s look at the other matches. At home, the Armada have been unbeatable. On the road, they have suffered losses at Fort Lauderdale, Tampa Bay and Minnesota and a draw at Atlanta. Each of the losses came by just one goal, and in each case the Armada were in the match, not just fortunate to be close. And each of those losses came to teams expected to contend for the NASL Championship. Compare that to Indy Eleven, who made their NASL debut last year. Indy didn’t win a single match in the Spring Season. That’s a far cry from what Jacksonville has accomplished. This week, another good test. Saturday’s match against Carolina is the third in eight days, including a mid-week US Open Cup match in Richmond, Virginia. The Armada played without center back Fabricio Ortiz last Saturday due to a suspension brought on by an accumulation of five yellow cards this season. They also played without leading goal scorer Keita. And yet, they basically outplayed Minnesota on the road. They’ve been away from Jacksonville for a week, finally returning home yesterday, and they now face a RailHawks team that have, like the Armada, 10 points this season. They feature a pair of players – Nacho Novo and Tiyi Shipalane – who have scored three goals this season and come into Saturday’s match having lost only once in their last five NASL fixtures. It’s another challenge for the Armada, and playing at home, they will be able to count on the energy created by the supporters at Community First Park. I suppose the point here is that while the Armada lost their chance to control their destiny in the Spring Season with last week’s loss in Minnesota, they have shown that they have what it takes to be contenders over the course of their entire inaugural season, and that in itself is a victory.

Opportunity Calling with Shawn Nicklaw Growing up in San Diego, Calif., the Armada FC‘s Shawn Nicklaw could not have imagined how far his love for the game would take him. Nicklaw has played on the national stage, in NCAA Division I competitions, on the frozen tundra of the Icelandic Premier League, and competed internationally with his national team all in his short career. At only 25 years old, the defender is settling into his new home while simultaneously helping Guam begin its 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification this June.

Q: Growing up with the game, when did you know you wanted to be a professional soccer player? I have two older brothers that played the game, so it is kind of in the family. I am the only one to play professional soccer so far. My oldest brother played at an NCAA Division II college (Notre Dame de Namur) and the other stopped after high school. I have a younger brother who plays on the (Guam) national team and also at San Diego State. I think my oldest brother, Richard, is probably the best player of all of us. I love my family. I really knew I wanted to be professional when I began playing at the youth level in San Diego. It was always an aspiration of mine, especially to play abroad.

“It is a big family here, and I really think that is what is helping us be so successful right now. I couldn’t ask for anything more in terms of my career right now. ” Q: How did you get the call up to play internationally? I received a Facebook message while I was in Denmark from Gary White, the head coach for the Guam National Team, which they call the Matao, saying that he wanted to speak with me. He actually sent another message a few hours later which said, ‘This is serious. I am the real head coach of the team, and I am interested in talking to you.’ So immediately after responding to him, he called me; he always calls at random times because Guam is a day ahead. He asked me if I was interested and if my brother was playing. I actually hadn’t heard of the Matao before then. I was definitely interested because that is my heritage, and representing your country is what everyone wants to do. Shortly after I said I was interested, Ryan Guy, an old friend who I trained with a lot back in San Diego, told me he committed to the team. I didn’t even know he was Guamanian. I really took it into consideration after that. Q: What does it mean to be a part of the Matao? 5.30.2015 Match day

QUICK FACTS: Shawn Nicklaw It is definitely something special. Like I have always said, it is a privilege to represent your country on the international stage. Personally, I love it. It holds a special place in my heart being able to play for them. Every time we do the ‘Inifresi’ before games, which is a chant kind of like the ‘Haka,’ I get goose bumps. Our equipment manager is always leading the pack, and it really gets us going before we take the pitch. It is really something special to be part of. Q: You have played for clubs all over the world. What made you want to call Armada home? It is all about timing. I got a call while I was playing over in Iceland to come over. I was definitely interested and looking for a new team while going through the process of waiting around in the offseason. When the opportunity came to play back in the U.S., especially in the NASL, I just had to take the opportunity. It is great being back in the U.S. and playing for the Armada FC. I have loved every single minute of it. I am definitely happy with everything – the city, club, coaches and my teammates. It is a big family here, and I really think that is what is helping us be so successful right now. I couldn’t ask for anything more in terms of my career right now.

Nicklaw comes to Jacksonville after stints with Icelandic Premier League club Thór (2014), USL PRO side Wilmington Hammerheads (2013) and Danish Premier League club HB Koge (2012-13). The 25-year-old San Diego, Calif., native has logged 3,892 minutes of action in 47 professional career appearances and has recorded four goals and four assists.

FUN FACTS: Q: If you could cast Jacksonville Armada FC, the movie, who would play you, your teammates and coach? If someone was to play me, it would have to find a very sarcastic actor. I think it would have to be The Rock (Dwayne Johnson). Coach Guillermo Hoyos: I would want him to play himself, but Chris Farley would be good and energetic. Keita: Djimon Hounsou from Blood Diamond. Miguel Gallardo: George Lopez. Matt Bahner: Mark Wahlberg.

Tonight’s opponent CAROLINA RAILHAWKS Founded in 2006, the Carolina RailHawks began as an expansion side in the third division USL and moved up to the North American Soccer League upon its founding in 2010. The club has been owned and operated by Traffic Sports USA, a Brazilian sport event management company that also owns the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. The RailHawks play all of their home matches at the 10,000 seat WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. Since 2011, former Southhampton and QPR striker, and Northern Ireland international Colin Clarke has been at the helm. The club has had a relatively successful tenure in the NASL, making it to semifinals in 2011 and 2012, and finishing second overall in 2013. The RailHawks managed to reach the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals in 2013 and 2014 by defeating MLS sides Los Angeles Galaxy and Chivas USA. The club has notable rivalries with the USL’s Charleston Battery and Atlanta Silverbacks. The trio of teams holds an annual competition called the Southern Derby.

SO FAR THIS SPRING... Carolina enters this Saturday’s matchup with 10 points (2W-4D-2L), after a 1-0 winners over the Fort Lauderdale Strikers last weekend. The RailHawks recently drew the first place New York Cosmos, 2-2,on May 16, at Wake Med Soccer Park in a thrilling match that saw the team surrender a gut-wrenching goal in the 90th minute. Despite undergoing a six-match, winless streak - the club hadn’t won since 3-1 over Ottawa Fury FC on April 4 before last Saturday’s win - Carolina managed to stay alive in the spring standings a series of entertaining draws. Clarke will likely stock his midfield heavily with attacking midfielder Neil Hlavaty, Tiyi Shipalane, and Mark Anderson, in his usual 4-5-1 formation. With the solid presence of the 6-foot-3 Hunter Gilstrap in net and former Glasgow Rangers and Spanish power forward Nacho Novo holding the lone striker position out front, the RailHawks could present a formidable battle for the Armada FC.

Matchday Experience

Don’t just come to the match, make a day of it. Situated on Duval Street outside of the stadium, the Armada FC Matchday Experience presented by PRI Productions starts three hours prior to kickoff with food, drinks, and interactive soccer experiences for all ages. Become part of the Armada FC tradition with prematch experiences for the whole family.

REMEMBER: The Match Day Experience begins three hours prior to kickoff every weekend match. 65

BOB’S BOOTROOM with Bob Veal

The referee has four main functions at a game of soccer: 1. Ensure the game is played according to the laws of the game 2. Look after the safety of the players 3. Keep the time of the game 4. Keep the score and the record of yellow and red cards given to players The referee can only make rulings on the field on the incidents he sees, and when not sure, he can consult with his assistants. He controls the game by running a diagonal from corner to corner at the same time his assistants cover the halves opposite to his diagonal run. He must be able to keep up with play, which means he has to be fit and able to run for the full 90 minutes of the game. The referee is in the hot seat, being judged by thousands of fans at the same time as being questioned by 22 players on the field, in many cases in a heated manner. The Armada FC could, in many games, receive unfavorable decisions, some of which have a direct impact on the result. At other times, those decisions could go with the Armada FC and affect the outcome in a positive way. Over the period of 28 or so games in a season, the league is won or lost on the ability of the players and the staff that prepare that team, not on the referee’s decisions in any one game. Last week in Minnesota, the Armada FC received their share of non-calls by the referee in the 3-2 loss. However, there were chances to win the game. As we have said, the Armada FC must start converting more of these chances/half chances. This will come as the players play more competitive games together. Eight games to date is very early to get to know each players style of play. Each week, we see improvement despite injuries and suspensions that cause changes to the lineup. Look for those improvements in today’s game, and show your support for your Armada FC. Catch Bob Veal on the Armada Radio Show Fridays on Sports Radio 930 at 3 p.m. and on Bob’s Bootroom during Armada Kickoff at 11 p.m. on CW17.
