Squid Vicious
Exclusive
SEA LIFE AS AN THE ARMADA FC SUPPORTING KRAKEN Only moments before kickoff at Community First Park as each team anxiously awaits the National Anthem, a thick layer of smoke bellows out of the northeast corner of the pitch. Just beyond “the stern” where all the supporters chant wildly, calling forth a 24-foot tall, terrifying, barnacle-smashing, soccer-supporting sea fairing creature surfaces to petrify the opposition as they take the field and show its unfledged support for the team it loves. Several months ago, Squid Vicious, the Armada FC’s biggest supporter, a nautical beast from the depths of the deep, crawled ashore to make his first appearance in downtown Jacksonville. The sighting was a first for everyone present on Feb. 28 to witness the visiting team cower before his presence and suffer a 1-0 defeat at the hands of the mighty Armada in the first match at their new home. The Armada FC’s sideline regular Krissty Andaur caught up with the nautical beast to find out little more about its passion for the game and how it became a stadiumdwelling staple on Armada FC Matchdays this season. Q: What inspired you to come show your support at Community First Park? “I was prying open a sunken U-boat from the bottom of the Atlantic when I lost my bearing and was carried away by a Nor’easter back in February. It carried me south. It was the smell of Grillman’s Franks that enticed me climb ashore and scale the stadium to catch a glimpse of the beautiful game. A lot of land creatures don’t realize what a keen sense of smell a Kraken possesses (much more acute than your average octopod). From there, I was hooked. It is what I looked forward to every weekend. I feel a call to duty to protect and support the Armada FC.” Q: How did you develop your love for the game? “The jellyfish and I used to kick around blowfish growing through commercial trawling nets. I always wanted to be a goalkeeper because nothing could get past my 6.7.2015 Match day
eight tentacles. I’ve been all over the world and consumed many different cultures. I have seen crews of the ships I have destroyed take soccer breaks to relieve themselves from the grueling stress of the seas. In all my traveling across the oceans, I realized there’s one common thing that unites this world we live in, and that is the beautiful game.”
With the help of my fellow boisterous chanters in Section 904, I put on my game face and make sure I am the largest, loudest and most fearsome creature that NASL teams would not want to meet on a trip to the beach.” Q:What makes you Squid Vicious? “Well, the great people of Jacksonville gave this name. I feel the name really fits my rebellious, unassuming, hard rocking attitude. The narwhals used to call me Kurly; I really hated that. Usually, I’m a mild-mannered kraken here for my love of the game and to cheer alongside all the great supporters of Northeast Florida. But, when it comes match time, I am always ready to battle alongside my beloved Armada FC. I use my long, slimy, intimidating tentacles to terrify opponents out of their skin. My piercing yellow eyes, along with the smoke creeping up from Davey Jones’ locker allow me to rise to the occasion of being the fearsome monster that I am. With the help of my fellow boisterous chanters in Section 904, I put on my game face and make sure I am the largest, loudest and most fearsome creature that NASL teams would not want to meet on a trip to the beach.” Q:While should Armada FC opponents fear your wrath? “Any team or opponent who steps foot on Community First Park should fear my nautical wrath because me and my tentacles are here to say to support our boys in navy blue. Plus, I’m a horrific and frightening Kraken. Have you smelled my breath? I have eight legs and 946 teeth. What’s not to fear?”

COACHES NOTES
Guillermo Hoyos & José Luis Villarreal Even though we haven’t seen the end results from our past three matches that we would like, our team continues to fight on and progress as we work to perfect our style of play. The ups and down that every team goes through is something we have had the privilege to experience together for the first time. For a new club and players just starting to gel as a unit, there is a learning curve involved. With two games left in the Spring Season, we have an opportunity to finish strong and put ourselves in an ideal starting position in the Fall Season as we try to capture one of the remaining playoff spots. This is our opportunity to go out and get results. This is only the end of the beginning, and we have nowhere to go but up now. Today’s opponent is a team that has struggled to find their ground, much as we have, but we have a major advantage: our fans. Every one of you who come to Community First Park to see us perform make the difference week in and week out. Tonight we take on an Ottawa team that knows how to get under a team’s skin. Their biggest advantage is the ability to make tackles and distract players as they attempt to scavenge for balls. Julian De Guzman, Fury FC’s most decorated player, will push some of our players to their limit. With a solid goalkeeper in Romuald Peiser, who has only given up two goals in three matches, anchoring the backline, we have solid but penetrable wall of defense to break through. Marc Dos Santos is a smart and resilient coach. He studies his opponents and will come into this match prepared, but we will as well. If we play our game and defend the ball with possession, as we have consistently done this season, we will have a good chance at rewarding our fans with a win. 17

‘Pepp Talk’
with Cole Pepper What a last couple of weeks it has been for the Armada. Two weeks ago, the Armada held their fate for the North American Soccer League Spring Championship in their hands with a highly-anticipated match in Minnesota looming. Now, there have been three straight losses (including one in their first-ever Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup match) and a 187 minute stretch without a goal. So now what? Now it’s time to shift focus. Those Spring Season Championship hopes are now dashed, so it’s time to treat this week like the first step of the Fall Season. In the NASL, the Spring Champion and Fall Champion qualify for the postseason NASL Playoffs. In addition, the teams with the next two best overall records qualify. There is nothing the Armada can do to fix the results that cost them a point here and a point there, but they must remember that the points that are yet to be won could wind up being the most important. Just ask the Carolina RailHawks and FC Edmonton. Last year, Edmonton missed the playoffs by just three points (the equivalent of one more win). Carolina missed by just two points. That’s the difference between a win and a draw. What’s the lesson? Every point matters. It’s not about goal differential or style points (although, both are nice to have as goal differential is the first tiebreaker and style points sure do make for more entertaining soccer), it’s about points. Wins, draws, whatever it takes. The Armada can still finish as high as second in the NASL Spring table, but placement matters not. Consider this the official start of the Fall Season for the Armada. It just comes a bit early. 19

One in a Millien Haitian international Pascal Millien has played in clubs around the world, but has always called Florida home. So when the Armada FC offered Millien the opportunity to return to the Sunshine State, he knew it was exactly where he wanted to play. Despite heartbreak and adversity, Millien has managed to bring a unique and humble philosophy as well a lightning fast sprint to the front line of the Armada FC this season.
Q: What is the hardest thing you have ever had to overcome? “The hardest thing I have ever been through was growing up on the streets. When I was 10, I lost my mom. She was everything to me. She was the one who gave me the ball; the one who put me in the game. Today, even as professional player, it tough that she is not around. It is also hard because I can’t tell her how much she did for me. That is my biggest challenge.” Q: Can you tell us about your charitable foundation, Millien Dreams Foundation, and how you were inspired to found it? “Well, the foundation is a pretty interesting story because when I was like 12-13 years old, I already had a passion for the game. I got a bunch of my little cousins that were like six-seven years old, and I made a team so I could take them to play on the streets. I created my own team with my cousins and my friends around my neighborhood. Then when I finished college after the earthquake happened, I told my best friend that we had to set up a website or whatever we have to do to raise money and now everything is going pretty good.” Q:How did you come up with your foundation’s name? “Actually, my best friend came up with that. We were trying to come up with a name and I said, ‘This is my dream’ and he said, “Why don’t we call it Millien Dreams Foundation?” So I said “Let’s go for it.” So it kind of makes sense now. Everybody now really likes the name.”
“One of my best friends taught me that whenever you surround yourself with positive people, you humble yourself. When you listen to what that person has to say, that is when you learn a lot” Q: You are also passionate about recording music. How did you get into that? “When I was in school, I used to be a troublemaker because I was always singing in class. The teacher would always kick me out because of that. I have had a passion for music since I was growing up. I have two passions in life: music and soccer. When I am at home and I have nothing to do, I just get a pen and paper and start writing. I start listening to the beats and start writing music and that gets me going. In 2012, I had my album out and stuff like that.” Q:What kind of music is that? “I do music like rap and R&B. We have our own type of music back home called Kompa. I just do a little bit of everything.” Q: What does Yo Sezi, the name of your album, mean in creole? “Yo Sezi means surprise. Nobody expected me to play professionally and have a full time job. It took me like two years to have the album out, and we had a successful album, so we ended up paying for 6.7.2015 Match day
QUICK FACTS: Pascal Millien the education and supplies of at least 50 kids in Haiti because of the album. Q: So all of the proceeds from the album went to the kids? “Exactly.” Q: All of it? “Yes. That is who I am doing for; the kids. I always try to help out the children in Haiti.” Q: When did you start doing backflips for your goal celebrations? “I always loved to do it when I was growing up, and people used to call me crazy because I would do that a lot. I would do any type of backflips and all kinds of stuff. When I started playing in high school, everybody had their own celebration, so I started doing backflips and people would tell me, ‘You have to be careful,’ but I would always do it.” Q:When did you start it? Was it in high school or at a club? “I started doing it at a club back home when I was like 12-13 years old.” Q: You might be the most humble guy on the team. How do you stay so down to earth? “The more you humble yourself, the luckier you get. Discipline is the key. I try the best I can to make sure that when I am around somebody, they are comfortable. I have always been around people who teach me that. One of my best friends taught me that whenever you surround yourself with positive people, you humble yourself. When you listen to what that person has to say, that is when you learn a lot. If you don’t humble yourself, you are not going to learn. You are just going to think you know it all. I try the best I can to stay more humble and try to learn more.”
A member of the Haitian national team since 2006 with 12 international matches to his credit, Millien comes to Jacksonville after spending the 2014 season with Sheikh Russel KC in Bangladesh and Samut Songkhram F.C. in Thailand. He scored three goals in seven league matches and played in the AFC President’s Cup for Sheikh Russel KC, netting two goals and recording five assists in helping lead the club to the tournament final.
FUN FACTS:
Q: If you could be anyone else, who would you be? “Nobody can be God but I would try to stay as close as I can. The reason why I am saying that is because I want to be a savior for God. I would like to be like Jesus Christ so I could send a message and change people’s lives. But if I could pick somebody in particular, I would choose to be Wyclef Jean because he is a positive person, he is working hard, he gives back, he loves what he is doing and he works hard for it.”

Tonight’s opponent Founded in 2011, the Ottawa Fury FC is one of two Canadian teams and the second to enter the North American Soccer League in the modern era. While the team was announced in June 2011 as Ottawa Fury SC, the club competed in the USL PDL until their 24,000 seat TD Place Stadium at Lansdowne was finished in July 2014. The club has is owned by the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG)o was granted the expansion four years ago. Until recently, Ottawa held the modern-era NASL attendance record when 14,593 fans poured into TD Place Stadium to see a 1-0 loss to the New York Cosmos in the stadium’s inaugural match. The record was eclipsed by the Armada FC, in the home opener on April 4. Fury FC finished in eighth place overall in their debut season. Ottawa has three passionate supporters groups ̶ the Bytown Boys, Stony Monday Riot and Fury Ultras ̶ who fill the stands at TD place Stadium and add to the experience on home matchdays. The club also operates a Junior Academy for U16-U17 Boys, a Senior Academy for U18-U19 Boys and an Elite Girls Academy for girls U16 and above.
So Far this Spring… Fury FC, who currently sit in seventh place in the NASL standings with a 2-3-3 record (W-D-L), sparked the first part of their sophomore season with a 1-0 upsetMinnesota United FCon April 18. The remainder of the spring has seen the club stumble, winning only one of its next four matches against a bottom of the table Indy Eleven. A string of early defensive errors appeared to be the Achilles heel of the Ottawa Fury FC. The team seems to have overcome that demon, dropping only two goals in three matches, however, the team has not scored since their 3-1 loss cross country rivals FC Edmonton. Ottawa is led on the field by 34-year-old former Canadian National Team member (76 caps) and ex-Bundesliga, La Liga, and Toronto FC performer Julian de Guzman, 35-year-old Frenchman and veteran goalkeeper Romuald

BOB’S BOOTROOM with Bob Veal
The honeymoon first season in the NASL is over for the Armada FC. Teams are doing their homework and watching tapes of how the Armada FC play their system of possession soccer; playing from the back and playing high into the opponents half. It has been a difficult, almost two weeks, on the road with a draw and two losses and last Saturday’s loss at home. It is time to regroup and take what has been learned onto the practice field and work on these lessons. These lessons fall into two categories – defense and how the Armada FC can get back on track with scoring goals. Let us deal with the defense first. The midfield must move back quicker and cover the opponent’s midfield players, making fast, late runs through the middle of the field. Getting more players behind the ball is the key to closing these runs down. The defense must be more aware of an attacking player’s whereabouts. Too many opponents drift in behind the defense and are not picked up. Defensive players have to take responsibility for marking players and not marking space. The Armada FC constantly win the game possession statistics. This is as a result of the accurate passing in the midfield, but at some point they must convert this possession into goals. The overlapping defensive players have to be more accurate with their final pass. To make this happen, the forwards and advancing midfield players have to create space and availability to receive the ball. Far too many final balls from the wings or from the midfield are going high and wide or to defenders. There is a long way to go to the end of the fall season. For a new club, putting 10 points on the board and the opportunity to finish the spring with 16 points is very commendable. With that kind of start, they can be contenders in the fall if they can execute on lessons learned. Catch Bob Veal on the Armada Radio Show Fridays on Sports Radio 930 at 3 p.m. and on Bob’s Bootroom during Armada Kickoff at 11 p.m. on CW17. 67
