Armada Honors Local Law Enforcement In JSO SCRIMMAGE Ahead of the Armada FC’s 2015 finale against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers this afternoon, the team tuned up with a training scrimmage against a team from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office at Community First Park on Wednesday morning. The scrimmage not only offered the Armada one more chance to play at Community First Park, but also gave the officers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to pit their best against Jacksonville’s North American Soccer League team. “For all of the guys, it was an absolute blast,” said JSO team member Trevor Hall. Hall scored for the JSO, smashing a 25-yard shot past Armada goalkeeper Sebastian Evers to give the officers something to celebrate. For most of the officers who play recreationally with the team as well as in other JSO sponsored sports, the midweek matchup against the Armada was a whole new experience and not one soon to be forgotten. A group of families and friends of the officers fill the stands around the dugouts at Community First Park and burst into applause following Hall’s goal. “It’s definitely a unique experience,” he said. “You go from playing the co-ed leagues and adult leagues here in town to this. Their speed is a lot different.” “We love doing things like this, allowing the JSO to come here and really just enjoy themselves together,” Armada defender Matt Bahner said. “We really appreciate what they do. It was a good day.”

COACH’S NOTES

Interim Head Coach Eric Dade The Armada has made it through its biggest test: its first season. Everything that we have played for and everything that our great fans have cheered for has boiled down to this. While we have been eliminated from the playoffs, there is still so much to play for. We are facing a tough Fort Lauderdale team that has defeated us twice this season. They are coming into our house looking for a victory for a chance to secure their spot in the postseason. Of course our aim is to shut them down. More importantly, our goal today is to play hard for everything that we have built here in Jacksonville. This game is a result of a lot of hard work, a long season and the support of the entire community. We can’t wait to give it our all in front of what will be an amazing crowd. This season finale will be special. I represent the entire coaching staff as well as the whole team when I say thank you to everyone who has come out today to show just what professional soccer in Jacksonville has become. Our memorable inaugural season could not have happened without you, the best fans in the NASL.

‘Pepp Talk’ With Cole Pepper A Year to Treasure You always remember your first love. It’s not that it’s better or worse than the rest necessarily, it’s just that when you experience something for the first time, those memories are indelibly burned into our brains. Remember your first prom? Remember your first car? Remember your first hangover? Okay, so it’s not fool-proof. The inaugural season for the Armada, however, will live in my memory forever. There were great moments, big goals, thrilling saves and heroic plays late in games. But the one constant that I’ll remember from this first season is the way Jacksonville supported the club. The team began the preseason with a modern-day NASL record for preseason attendance against Major League Soccer’s Philadelphia Union. Then, in the North American Soccer League season opener, another league record was set when the Armada were supported by 16,164, the most to watch a league fixture in the modern day NASL. All through the season, crowds were terrific at Community First Park, and as the season concludes on Sunday, the club expects a capacity crowd. So what’s the next step? For the Armada on the pitch, they’ll have to settle on their new head coach for 2016. But they’ll also be tasked with energizing the next level of soccer fan in northeast Florida; the fans who watched some games on television or listened on the radio or who were interested in hearing the water cooler conversations about the Armada on Monday mornings in offices all across the area. Those are the people who must experience (and enjoy) the Armada in 2016 in order for professional soccer to grow in Jacksonville. To me, there are three components to this: the team, the club and the fans. The team must improve their performance. The talent is here to be a postseason contender. The coaching needs to produce more wins (especially on the road). The club must continue to do its part to keep reaching out to the community to engage soccer fans and make them Armada fans. And the current fans can make a difference too. In 2016, bring a first timer to a game! Let them experience what you have enjoyed all year long. How great would it be to see Community First Park packed for every match like it will be Sunday? This year has been a year to treasure, and the exciting thing is, next year should be even better. 19

Commando Keita Jacksonville Armada FC West African striker Alhassane Keita has anchored his place in the club’s history, as the team’s leading goal scorer in its inaugural season. Keita, a seasoned veteran with nearly 15 years of experience against some of the best players in the world, is happy to call Jacksonville his new home. With one season almost complete, Keita is confident the Armada is sailing into a bright and successful future.

Q: When did you decide you wanted to be a forward? It was a long time ago back in Guinea when I was a young kid. I didn’t actually play soccer when I was a teenager. I was trying to be a businessman. It was so easy for people like myself where I came from. It was a struggle for my parents just to buy food, buy books and a uniform for school. So I was forced to earn some money just to help out. Soccer wasn’t considered a real job. Everyone would say it was just a waste of time to play soccer because it is so hard to make it. I had my own business to sell cooking ingredients like herbs and spices, but I didn’t make much money. After that, I bought my own spot and started sewing men’s clothes. I was only 16 years old. During that period of time, we had a soccer organization that started up. They wanted to create a team to represent the community and compete in a local league. People kept asking me to come out and just play for fun. I ended up being really successful in that community league. I played a lot of games and scored a lot of goals.

“ Every disappointment is a blessing because with a bit of luck and hard work we will be able to prove that we are the best team in the NASL.” From there they decided to select the best players to represent the entire town and compete in bigger games in the capital city, Conakry. That is where I got noticed. I used to play on the left then. I wasn’t always a striker. I was working at the same time and started to realize that I really liked soccer and could make a living off of what they were giving me. I stopped my businesses, joined a professional team and started focusing on playing full time. I was really successful at that time. A team in Conakry called Horoya AC noticed me and brought me into their club. It was one of the best teams in Guinea. That is when it really happened for me. From there I was recruited to go to Olympique Khouribga in Morocco. When I turned 18, we were playing preseason in Switzerland, and FC Zürich noticed me and brought me in for a trial. They signed me, and that is where I was probably the most successful of my career. Q: What kind of feeling did you get scoring on former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas, who is one of the best in the world? It was really a great moment in my career. I felt that day that something special had happened 11.1.2015 Match day

QUICK FACTS:

Alhassane Keita and that I was never going to forget it. My kids were going to see it, people I know were going to hear about it and it makes me very proud. Not everyone has the chance to do that. After that day I knew it was my destiny, especially against Real Madrid. We beat them that day at their stadium (Santiago Bernabeu) and it was big. Cristiano Ronaldo had just come from Manchester United and they had Raúl and Gonzalo Higuain. They were all there. Q: What do you like best about playing in Jacksonville? I am very happy to be here. The team is new to the city and the sport is growing here. I want to be a part of that. I want to give what I have learned from all over the world to the city. My aim is to teach kids what I have learned so they can have careers like I have had. I want to establish something here for the future. It is a great opportunity and a good challenge. Q: What do you want to see from the Armada in the future? Football can be disappointing sometimes. You can give everything, be the best you can be and sometimes you lose. The Jacksonville Armada is the best team in the NASL. Believe me. I can’t wait to see the future. When you have people like we have, there is always hope, so we are looking forward to next season. Every disappointment is a blessing because with a bit of luck and hard work we will be able to prove that we are the best team in the NASL. I have full confidence that everyone is going to be talking about this team in future.

West African-born Keita has played in some of the biggest leagues in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Keita has a career strike rate of one goal for less than every three games (100-plus career goals in more than 250 appearances. Two-time winner of his league’s Golden Boot award as the top goal scorer. He was part of the Guinea men’s national team from 2004-09. He played on the 2004 Guinea team that reached the Africa Cup of Nations Quarterfinals.

FUN FACTS:

Q: What’s your favorite song? I love some R&B. It’s got to be anything from Chris Brown. I like my African music as well.

ToDAY’s opponent Fort Lauderdale Strikers

After an impressive 2014 season that ended with a loss to the San Antonio Scorpions in the 2014 North American Soccer League Championship final, the Fort Lauderdale Strikers find themselves still in the hunt for the final 2015 Championship playoff spot going into today’s regular season finale. Despite going through multiple transformations over the years, the club represents a long legacy of the professional game in South Florida that reaches back to the early days of American soccer in 1972. With a new ownership group taking over the club, which includes Brazilian legend Ronaldo, the Strikers have revamped their roster as well as their coaching staff over the course of the year. The return of Günter Kronsteiner earlier in June has prompted the team to make another push for The Championship.

2015 NASL Fall Season

The Strikers stocked the field with a plethora of South American talent when they signed midfielder Marlon Freitas and forward Stefano Pinho on loan from another Brazilian side, Fluminense, for the 2015 season, while defender Victor “PC” Giro comes by way of yet another Brazilian dynamo, Corinthians.

Biggest: Win 7-1(H) Indy Eleven Loss 2-5(A) Minnesota United FC

The Strikers (7W-6D-6L Fall, 10-8-11 Combined) are desperate for a win. A loss to the Indy Eleven last Saturday, coupled with the Tampa Bay Rowdies 1-0 home win over the Carolina RailHawks, dropped the Strikers into fifth place in the chase for the fourth and final berth in The Championship. Tampa Bay’s win gives it 39 points, one more than Fort Lauderdale in the NASL Combined Standings, with one match remaining in both teams’ schedules.

While a draw and a Rowdies loss would lean heavily in Fort Lauderdale’s favor, the Strikers prefer a win to ensure the best odds for a spot in The NASL Championship.
