TONIGHT’S MATCH PRESENTED BY
vs. Tonight the Jacksonville Armada FC returns to Community First Park at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville for a preseason showdown with Major League Soccer foe Orlando City SC. Tonight marks the first-ever meeting of the two sides in any competition. After a rain-soaked victory over MLS’s Philadelphia Union for the second consecutive season last Saturday, Tony Meola and his team arrive at Community First Park ready to compete against another top-tier club. Either of tonight’s clubs need only turn once on their respective highway journeys (Interstate 95 and 4) to reach each other, making them the closest regional rivalry in the Sunshine State. Yet, until now a meeting of the had not come to pass. All the exciting matchday traditions are still intact as the team takes the pitch tonight. As always, it will be easy to know when the Armada FC players find the back of the net. Prior to every home match and after every Armada FC goal scored, the cannons will be fired. Just before the teams enter the pitch for team introductions, the Armada FC’s biggest nautical supporter, Squid Vicious, is released in stunning fashion casting a shadow over the opposition and showing it’s eight legged support for the “Boys In Blue.” Finally, a representative from Armada FC partner Winn-Dixie will have the privilege of raising the Armada FC flag high above the pitch immediately preceding the singing of the National Anthem to signal the start of the second 2016 Armada FC preseason match. TONIGHT’S MATCH-UP Orlando City SC is now a second-year MLS squad that comes packing a star-studded lineup. Head coach Adrian Heath fills his starting lineups with the likes of World Cup Champion, former FIFA World Player of the Year and Brazilian International Kaká, U.S. International Brek Shea, MLS Cup MVP Frenchman Aurélien Collin, Canadian International and 2015 MLS Rookie of the Year Award Cycle Larin, just to name a few. The two teams share some connections. Armada FC goalkeeper and first club signing Miguel Gallardo played four impressive seasons in Orlando before moving north in 2014. Two Armada defenders, Bryan Burke and Mechack Jérôme, spent significant time on the Lion’s backline before the club’s transition to MLS. Additionally, Akeil Barrett was selected by OCSC in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft but was released in February 2015 allowing him to join the Armada FC the following month. Tonight’s highly anticipated preseason matchup is sure to ignite the soul of soccer fans around the state and especially here at home in Northeast Florida. Prepare to hear the cannons fire, supporters shout and experience an occasion not soon to be forgotten.

TECHNICAL STAFF HEAD COACH/TECHNICAL DIRECTOR TONY MEOLA
Legendary former U.S. Men’s National Team and MLS goalkeeper Tony Meola was named the Jacksonville Armada FC Head Coach and Technical Director on Nov. 24, 2015. Meola has been a prominent figure in U.S. Soccer since he stormed onto the scene in 1987 when he helped lead the U-20 National Team at the 1987 FIFA World Youth Championship in goal. Following a two-year college career at the University of Virginia, where he was a two-time AllAmerican under the guidance of U.S. Soccer icon Bruce Arena, Meola embarked on an illustrious international career in 1988 with the U.S. Men’s National Team, which included three FIFA World Cups (1999, 1994, and 2002).
ASSISTANT COACH JIM ROONEY
Tony Meola named former MLS All-Star and U.S. National Team U-17 assistant coach Jim Rooney as his top management on Nov. 25, 2015. A native of the Bronx, New York, Rooney was a midfielder who played with Meola at the Long Island Rough Riders in 1995 and at the New York/New Jersey MetroStars in 1998 and 1999. Rooney made 116 career appearances in MLS with the MetroStars, Miami Fusion and New England Revolution.
ASSISTANT COACH MARK LOWRY
Tony Meola added Mark Lowry to his staff as an Assistant Coach on Dec. 30, 2015. Lowry, who served as an Interim Assistant Coach under Eric Dade in the Armada’s final seven weeks of the 2015 North American Soccer League Fall Season, came to Jacksonville following three years as a coach at the Orlando City Soccer Club’s U.S. Soccer Development Academy program. He also served as a coach for Armada FC youth development partner Jacksonville FC’s U.S. Soccer development program.

He originally served as the Director of Soccer for Sunshine Soccer Agency, the holding corporation of the Armada FC and then took on the role of Director of Soccer Operations in 2014 once the club began its official NASL operations. Walter also served as an interim assistant coach in the last eight weeks of the 2015 NASL Fall Season. In December 2015, Walter was promoted to the club’s Assistant Technical Director.

TONY’S NOTES This past Saturday’s victory was a great start to our preseason. Beating a team of the Union’s caliber is just what we need to fuel our fire and progress us toward our goals. That being said, we have a long way to go to be where we want. Today is only step two in our hunt for regional domination and a league title, and we will start by taking on a superb opponent in Major League Soccer’s Orlando City. I think it is important to talk about winning. Whether it is winning the North American Soccer League or winning the U.S. Open Cup. For me, you have to win your state first. We have a lot of teams in Florida, so it’s a fun rivalry. This game doesn’t have any bearing on our NASL season and our championship run, but don’t get me wrong this match means a lot to our boys. Our team should be getting to a level of 60-minute fitness and that for me is the goal tonight. We want a good portion of these guys to be able to work 60 minutes through a match. That will give us an idea of who still needs to work up their fitness levels. This is the team to test it against. By the time we get to New York Red Bulls at the end of the month, we will really start to see who is ready to play. Our main goal is to arrive on April 10 in New York fit to compete against the defending champions New York Cosmos. That is what makes games like tonight’s match so special. The excitement is in the groundwork. Thank you for supporting the Armada FC and coming out to tonight’s exciting preseason match. GO ARMADA!

NO MISSION IMPOSSIBLE
MIGUEL GALLARDO IS UP TO THE TASK Following a year of milestones and disappointments, Armada FC goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo remains proud of his choice to become the first signing of Northeast Florida’s NASL team. Tonight, faced with a familiar opponent in his former club Orlando City SC, Gallardo doesn’t look back but forges forward with one clear goal in mind – to win. His passionate, pragmatic and competitive character is ready for the second preseason challenge ahead as he prepares to backstop Jacksonville to a successful 2016. Q: You have a history with tonight’s opponent. How do you feel about facing your old team? I spent six years with Adrian Heath. So obviously he is a coach that I have a lot of respect for. I learned a lot not only about the game itself, but about being a professional from him. It is certainly special for me. Not even to play them, but just to see some of them. I have a lot of love and respect for a lot of these guys. I am looking forward to tonight’s match, simply because it is our next match. I had a great history with Orlando City, but that is just what 2.13.2016 ARMADA MATCHDAY
it is – history. I have turned the page and now I play for the Jacksonville Armada FC. I am fully committed to this team and this city. I have a lot of love for my teammates and the fans here. I want to be the best that I can be so that I can help build this club that so many people in Jacksonville are passionate about. It’s something to be proud of, just like when I played for Orlando City.
"I had a great history with Orlando City, but that is just what it is - history. I have turned the page and now I play for the Jacksonville Armada FC. I am fully committed to this team." Q: You have said you want to redeem yourself. How do you want to accomplish that? I have always been competitive and someone that strives to be the best that I can be. I came to the Armada from a team that won a lot and were arguably the best in the league, so to come to a team that I am really excited to be a part of and have a season that didn’t live up to my standard was upsetting. But, you know that gives me a lot of motivation. They say that you learn the most from bad experiences. Last season was not a completely bad experience, we still accomplished a lot, but it is something I always want to improve on. I just want to train hard every day to be the best keeper that I can be, so that if given the opportunity by Coach Meola, I can help the team be successful and get the results we are striving for. Miguel Gallardo became the first player to sign with the Jacksonville Armada FC on Oct. 14, 2014. The veteran netminder immediately became a fan favorite during the inaugural season. He made 22 NASL starts and logged 1,980 minutes of action over the course of 2015, which included four shutouts and a 1.68 GAA. He recorded 75 saves, second-best in the NASL, and was named to NASL Team of the Week twice. He even earned the No. 1 spot on ESPN SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays in July after an impressive display of acrobatics and a breathtaking, highlight-reel save against Minnesota United.
Q: What did you learn from last season? Last season I learned a completely different side of the game. The whole organization started strong. I didn’t know what to expect coming to Jacksonville, but I was very pleasantly surprised by everything from the staff, to the fans, to the gameday experience. The Armada organization is far above many professional teams in this country. It may have been a rough season near the end last year, but I am still proud to play for the Jacksonville Armada. Q: Last year you said you would play baseball if you hadn’t become a goalkeeper. Still the case? Absolutely! I still play baseball whenever I get the chance. My favorite thing to do when I go to the beach is to throw on the baseball glove and play some catch. My dad’s favorite sport is baseball, so we watched a lot of baseball growing up. He even named me Miguel, so people would call me Mickey, after Mickey Mantle. That was my nickname growing up. I may not love to watch baseball, but I love to play it. I have been to Suns games. They are a really good team. Nothing like getting some peanuts, sitting down and enjoying a good ball game. It’s not too far off from watching one of our matches. Except there’s a giant squid in the outfield at ours. 2.13.2016

‘PEPP TALK’ WITH COLE PEPPER OFF TO A GOOD START The Armada is off to a good start in its second preseason. After Jacksonville’s 1-0 victory over Philadelphia Union of the MLS last Saturday, head coach Tony Meola said, “We were the better team.” He was speaking in comparison to Philadelphia, but he could also have been comparing the Armada to last year’s squad. It’s still early, but this season’s Armada appears to me to be more stable, controlled and deeper than last year. A few observations: The starting backline played very well, as you would expect in a shutout. One moment that really stood out to me as a comparison to last season was a rather simple play where center back Beto Navarro was in the midst of a crowded 18-yard box. He played a ball calmly off his chest and cleared it out. No panic. No worries. The early returns are that the backline is much improved. Philadelphia, despite their success in the U.S. Open Cup the past two years, isn’t a championship contender. The next opponent for the Armada, Orlando City, had a similar MLS-debut as the Armada did in its first NASL season last year. Both clubs made a big splash in their communities (albeit on slightly different scales). Orlando missed out on the playoffs by five points. In their second MLS season, the Lions have higher expectations. So do the Armada. One more thing to remember about the Armada; They are still playing at less than full strength. Former Ottawa captain Richie Ryan didn’t play in the opener. And once midfielder Junior Sandoval arrives from the Colombian Premier Division, the Armada will have its full batch of options. That roster offers Meola a number of options he can call on depending on the time and status of a game. It’s just the start of things, but the Armada appear to be off to a very good start in 2016.

THE VISITORS ORLANDO CITY SC
#10 Kaká “IT’S NOT A MATTER OF IF, BUT WHEN.”
When members of the ownership group Orlando Pro Soccer founded the Orlando City Soccer Club in 2010, they went in with the mindset of becoming part of Major League Soccer within a few years of the team’s inaugural season. Orlando City SC entered the soccer world under the third tier of the American soccer pyramid, the United Soccer League, formerly known as USL Pro. Over the next few years, the owners saw a lot of success in their investment, including an enormous grassroots effort by fans for approval to build a soccer stadium in the heart of Orlando. Like their fans, the soccer club proved they were a force to be reckoned with by winning two USL Pro championships and three Commissioner’s Cups. Those successful seasons, along with the help from the already passionate OCSC fans, provoked advancement in Orlando City’s journey to MLS. On Nov. 19, 2013, during the same year the Armada FC was founded, Orlando City SC was announced as MLS’s 21st franchise.
A RIVALRY IN WAITING
The sunny, yet sometimes dreadfully rainy state of Florida isn’t the only thing the Armada shares with OCSC. Although, this game won’t affect the Armada’s regular NASL season, the friendly comes with a few of Armada’s very own seeing some familiar faces. One of the Armada’s assistant coaches, Mark Lowry, coached in OCSC’s youth system for three years before joining the Armada coaching staff.
And although brief, Armada’s Mechack Jérôme and Akeil Barrett spent some time with today’s opponents as well. Barrett was one of Orlando City’s top draft picks in 2015, and Jérôme was part of the 2011 championship team as well as the 2012 Commissioner’s Cup squad. Bryan Burke was with Orlando City in 2013, tallying two goals and four assists before he acquired a season-ending injury and was released in 2014. Likely, the most familiar of them all is last Saturday’s fan-chosen Man of the Match. Miguel Gallardo started his professional career with Orlando City (then named Austin Aztex) in 2009. He went on to make 81 appearances over the course of four seasons with OCSC and was named USL Goalkeeper of the Year in the club’s 2011 Championship run. Today will be his first time playing against OCSC and the coach he spent six years playing professionally under since his release in 2014 following Orlando City’s MLS expansion.
SCOUTING THE LIONS
Orlando City SC will enter Community First Park for the first time today, and with this first meeting, it comes with a handful of gifted athletes. The club’s roster is loaded with talent like midfielder/defender Brek Shea, and defender and France native Aurélien Collin. OCSC’s roster also includes top 2015 draft pick and forward, Cyle Larin and Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite, commonly known as Kaká, the latter of whom has his own array of outstanding stats, such as being a World Cup Champion and former FIFA World Player of the Year. Larin would began his MLS career with a stunning 17 goals during Orlando City’s 2015 season.
