TONIGHT’S MATCH PRESENTED BY

vs. Following a 2-0 start to the preseason, the Jacksonville Armada FC returns to Community First Park at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville for their final Major League Soccer preseason test against the reigning Supporters Shield and Eastern Conference Champions, the New York Red Bulls. Two spectacular victories – against the Philadelphia Union, 1-0, on Feb. 6, and regional rivals Orlando City SC, 2-1, on Feb. 13 – have seen Armada sailing strong early during a preseason typically reserved for fine-tuning. Jacksonville arrives with its heads held high and ambitions elevated. All the exciting matchday traditions remain intact as the team takes the pitch tonight. As always, it will be easy to know when the Armada FC players find the back of the net. Prior to every home match and after every the Armada FC goal scored, the cannons will be fired. Just before the teams enter the pitch for team introductions, the Armada FC’s biggest nautical supporter, Squid Vicious, is released in stunning fashion casting a shadow over the opposition and showing its eight-legged support for the “Boys in Blue.” A representative from Armada FC partner Socially Bold will have the privilege of raising the Armada FC flag high above the pitch immediately preceding the singing of the National Anthem to signal the start of the third 2016 Armada FC preseason match. TONIGHT’S BATTLE The New York Red Bulls enter Community First Park for the first time with an impressive and powerful lineup including the high scoring British brothers Shaun and Bradley Wright-Phillips, midfielder and captain Dax McCarty, U.S. International midfielder Sacha Kljestan and 2015 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Luis Robles. The two teams share some connections on the field tonight. U.S. Hall of Fame Goalkeeper and Armada head coach and technical director Tony Meola made 90 appearances in four combined years with the Red Bulls. Armada assistant coach Jim Rooney was a teammate of Meola’s on the Red Bulls in 1999 (then called the New York/New Jersey MetroStars). Armada defender Tyler Ruthven made five appearances with the club before moving to Swedish Superettan. Excluding two informal scrimmages, tonight’s match marks the first time either teams have met in any competition. Expect the Armada FC to charge out strong as they look to defend the park as well as their 3-0 all-time preseason record against MLS competition.

TECHNICAL STAFF HEAD COACH/TECHNICAL DIRECTOR TONY MEOLA

Legendary former U.S. Men’s National Team and MLS goalkeeper Tony Meola was named the Jacksonville Armada FC Head Coach and Technical Director on Nov. 24, 2015. Meola has been a prominent figure in U.S. Soccer since he stormed onto the scene in 1987 when he helped lead the U-20 National Team at the 1987 FIFA World Youth Championship in goal. Following a two-year college career at the University of Virginia, where he was a two-time AllAmerican under the guidance of U.S. Soccer icon Bruce Arena, Meola embarked on an illustrious international career in 1988 with the U.S. Men’s National Team, which included three FIFA World Cups (1999, 1994, and 2002).

ASSISTANT COACH JIM ROONEY

Tony Meola named former MLS All-Star and U.S. National Team U-17 assistant coach Jim Rooney as his top management on Nov. 25, 2015. A native of the Bronx, New York, Rooney was a midfielder who played with Meola at the Long Island Rough Riders in 1995 and at the New York/New Jersey MetroStars in 1998 and 1999. Rooney made 116 career appearances in MLS with the MetroStars, Miami Fusion and New England Revolution.

ASSISTANT COACH MARK LOWRY

Tony Meola added Mark Lowry to his staff as an Assistant Coach on Dec. 30, 2015. Lowry, who served as an Interim Assistant Coach under Eric Dade in the Armada’s final seven weeks of the 2015 North American Soccer League Fall Season, came to Jacksonville following three years as a coach at the Orlando City Soccer Club’s U.S. Soccer Development Academy program. He also served as a coach for Armada FC youth development partner Jacksonville FC’s U.S. Soccer development program.

ASSISTANT TECHNICAL DIRECTOR NATHAN WALTER

Nathan Walter has been with the Jacksonville Armada FC since the club’s beginning stages, joining in 2013 as employee No. 2. He originally served as the Director of Soccer for Sunshine Soccer Agency, the holding corporation of the Armada FC and then took on the role of Director of Soccer Operations in 2014 once the club began its official NASL operations. Walter also served as an interim assistant coach in the last eight weeks of the 2015 NASL Fall Season. In December 2015, Walter was promoted to the club’s Assistant Technical Director.

TONY’S NOTES When I look at Jacksonville’s soccer fans, I see a support that is never-ending, unwavering and full of passion. What we saw last year here in Jacksonville was just that; some seriously dedicated fans. They went through some tough times, especially on the road. Hopefully, we can make those games that they were forced to watch on TV a little less painful and get some Ws on the road. We go on the road to steal points, but at home you have to get those points. We have to put pressure on teams and put them under the gun right from the first kick. That is something that I have stressed all preseason, speed of the first 10 minutes of the game has to be very high. That is going to be a staple this season. Tonight’s opponent is a team I am very familiar with and one that I have spent a lot of time alongside. These are some seriously talented players and a very organized coaching staff that I have a great amount of respect for. They are for sure the biggest challenge yet. Preseason is not about the score on the board but about getting fit and finding a system that works for us. However, as you can tell from our past two games, there is no such thing as “friendly,” and we play to win every single match. That being said, this is our home and our game for the taking. These boys have a task ahead of them. I have been impressed with what I have been seeing. This is also an opportunity for you, our awesome fans to come show us what this city is made of and support the squad. Thank you for all your support!

- Head Coach & Technical Director, Tony Meola

RUTHVEN’S REUNION

ARMADA’S NEW DEFENDER IS READY TO RUN WITH THE BULLS Armada FC defender Tyler Ruthven joined the team in 2016 with an optimistic and competitive outlook. As the son of former Major League pitcher Dick Ruthven, who played with the Atlanta Braves, Chicago Cubs and won a World Series with the Philadelphia Phillies, winning is clearly in the blood for the new addition to the fleet. As the Armada prepares to take the pitch against their final Major League Soccer test of the preseason, Ruthven is eager to engage with his former team, the New York Red Bulls. Q: You grew up near Atlanta and played for the University of South Carolina. Do you consider yourself a Southern boy? “Not at all. My dad grew up in Southern California, so that is more how our family was raised. No one in my family has an accent. No one says ‘y’all.’ We never really considered ourselves Southern even though we have lived in the Southeast for a really long time. Unfortunately, no country music at our household.” Q: You have played in a variety of places. What is the biggest 2.27.2016

ARMADA MATCHDAY

difference in playing in these unique places? “To me, the climate is something that you have to get used to. In Scandinavia, towards the end of the season, it starts to get quite cold. You have to look after yourself. Maybe a little smarter about how you warm up and for how long. On the opposite side of the spectrum, in the desert, it is all about drinking water, even as simple as that sounds. Playing in Arizona, you have to have water in your hand pretty much all the time.”

"I WILL SAY THIS. I HAVEN’T BEEN THIS EXCITED SINCE I FIRST GOT A CHANCE IN MLS. IT FEELS LIKE A FRESH START." Q: This is a return for you to not only, the North American Soccer League, but the heat and humidity. Does that have any effect on you? “Not at all. I was born and raised in this climate. People asked me the same question about the heat when I got out to Arizona. It was dry out there, but Florida … I got this. I was raised in this climate. It doesn’t bother me at all.” Q: What attracted you to Jacksonville? “I had a year left on my contract in Arizona, but it was wasn’t shaping out the way that I hoped. I just got married and my wife is based in Atlanta, so that was big factor. I started speaking to Tony (Meola), Jimmy (Rooney) and Nathan (Walter), and there were a lot of similarities in the way we see things. They brought me here to be me. They

Tyler Ruthven joined the Armada FC on Dec, 22, 2015. Ruthven brings a physical presence and extensive experience across North America and Scandinavia. He made 42 appearances with the Arizona United in two seasons with the USL side. He made a total of 18 appearances in 2013 with top Swedish division club IK Brage and top Finnish division side KuPS. He also played five matches with the New York Red Bulls in 2012. He spent the 2011 season with Atlanta Silverbacks and began professional career with Harrisburg City Islanders in 2010. A former USC gamecock, Ruthven grew up in Alpharetta, Ga., and is the son of former MLB pitcher Dick Ruthven.

didn’t ask me to fit into some sort of mold. They wanted me to come be the person that I have always been. As a player, that is really all you can ask for.”

Armada Meal Plan What does a professional soccer player eat on gameday? We asked Tyler what his diet consists of on an Armada FC matchday. Here is what he told us:

Q: Are you excited about the coming season? “I will say this. I haven’t been this excited since I first got a chance in MLS. It feels like a fresh start. It has become work and I wasn’t enjoying myself playing. I have thoroughly enjoyed playing at our trainings and especially during the games. It has been refreshing to enjoy myself playing again.” Q: What do you attribute the team’s phenomenal preseason start to? “I missed the Orlando City game with a hamstring (injury), which was a bummer, but I think it is really important to emphasize to everyone it is still preseason. It is great for all of our fans and the club. To be honest, we aren’t putting that much stock into what the scoreboard says at the end of the night. We are working on building a couple of systems to see what we are most comfortable with and progress toward something. That being said, we don’t ever start a game not wanting to win. I know Orlando City was important to our fans. I was gutted to have to sit on the bench, but I am back, fit now and looking forward to playing my old club (Red Bulls) this weekend.” Q: Do you ever drink Red Bull? Simply put, no! 2.27.2016

‘PEPP TALK’ WITH COLE PEPPER WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN? We’re not yet a month into the preseason, and the Jacksonville Armada has already earned two victories over MLS opposition: a 1-0 decision on a rainy, windswept night to start the preseason schedule over Philadelphia Union on Feb. 6 and a rousing come-from-behind 2-1 decision over Orlando City a week later. Anytime an NASL team beats an MLS side, there is pride for a club like the Armada and for the rest of the league. Just look back two years to the U.S. Open Cup when the NASL won seven of 15 against MLS teams. But when it happens in the preseason, what does it all mean? As in any preseason competition, you have to look at the result through a very specific lens. For starters, I like to look at the starters. Did both teams play the guys who will largely be in the starting 11s, and did they play the players in the spots they expect to fold down in the regular year? Philadelphia and Orlando largely (although not without exception) did. As did the Armada. Coaches tend to tinker this time of year to find out which players fit together and in which system. That’s going on as well. The other facet to note is what the score is when the starters are subbed out. In the Armada/Union contest, it was 0-0. Against Orlando City, it was 2-1 in Jacksonville’s favor. Saturday, when the Armada faces the New York Red Bulls at Community First Park, we’ll have another opportunity to gauge just how far Tony Meola’s club has come since training started in midJanuary. A victory over the Red Bulls (who beat the Armada 5-2 in a scrimmage in Orlando in late January) would serve notice that the Armada is ready to contend for the top of the NASL and that Meola means business in his first year as a head coach.

THE VISITORS NEW YORK RED BULLS

#99 Bradley Wright Phillips

FROM METROSTARS TO RED BULLS When Major League Soccer was first formed in 1996, it began with only 10 teams in the league. The New York Red Bulls, then known as the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, was one of those teams. During the MetroStars era, forward Clint Mathis netted five goals in a match once, which is still the current MLS record for most scored in a match. It wasn’t until 2006 that they would acquire their current name as the New York Red Bulls after a change in ownership. During this time, specifically in 2007, the team went on to set a new all-time league record with more than 66,000 fans packing Giants Stadium against David Beckham and the Los Angeles Galaxy.

NEW YORK CONNECTIONS Like the Feb. 13 match against Orlando City, this preseason game against New York will provoke some memories for three associated with the Armada. Defender Tyler Ruthven played with the Red Bulls in 2012 and

made his first MLS appearance on April 22, 2012, in a match against D.C. United. His performance earned him a starting position in the next three matches that produced three additional victories for that season. Tonight will be Ruthven’s first game against his former teammates. Armada head coach and technical director Tony Meola played for the New York Red Bulls from 1996-1998 (then named the MetroStars) where he made 90 appearances, as well from 2005-2007. He was one of the first players signed to the team upon the creation of MLS along with 1994 FIFA World Cup teammate Tab Ramos and AC Milan star midfielder Roberto Donadoni. Armada assistant coach Jim Rooney was a teammate of Meola’s with the MetroStars in 1998, where he was a key part of the midfield.

As the Red Bulls begin their 21st season, they bring an impressive, power-packed roster. Brothers Shaun and Bradley Wright-Phillips are among the roster standouts, with the latter scoring 17 goals last season, good for fifth in MLS. The Red Bulls also have the use of talent from captain and friend of Tyler Ruthven, Dax McCarty, as well as midfielder Sacha Kljestan and goalkeeper Luis Robles. New York is led by head coach, Jesse Marsch.
