5.28.2016 ARMADA MATCHDAY

TONIGHT’S MATCH vs.

Tonight’s match marks the first Military Appreciation Night at Community First Park at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville of 2016. The Armada FC is proud to honor the rich military heritage of the area that as well as pay tribute to the brave men and women who have dedicated their lives defending our country. All of the exciting match day traditions will commence as the team takes the pitch tonight. As always, it will be easy to know when the Armada players find the back of the net. Prior to every home match and after every Armada goal scored, the cannons will be fired. Just before the teams enter the pitch for team introductions, the Armada’s biggest nautical supporter, Squid Vicious, is released in stunning fashion casting a shadow over the opposition and showing its eight-legged support for the ‘‘Boys in Blue.’’ Moments before the action begins, the Armada FC flag is raised high above the pitch immediately preceding the singing of the National Anthem to signal the start of the fourth home match of 2016.

A Military Tradition Tonight the Armada FC hosts the Indy Eleven, another team steeped in military tradition. Indy is named after the 11th Regiment of Indiana Volunteers, which fought for the Union Army during the Civil War. Eleven head coach Tim Hankinson took the helm prior to the start of the 2016 season and brings 36-years of coaching experience to ‘‘Indiana’s Team.’’ The Eleven bolstered its lineup in the offseason following two straight ninthplace finishes in its first two seasons. The first acquisition was Bosnia & Herzegovina defender Siniša Ubiparipovi from Ottawa Fury FC, followed by Colombian forward Jair Reinoso from China to upgrade the attack. With the Spring Season up for grabs, the Eleven will be looking to gather points and the Armada FC will have a feisty foe to compete with as the battle for Military Night supremacy wages on at Community First Park.

TECHNICAL STAFF HEAD COACH/TECHNICAL DIRECTOR TONY MEOLA

Legendary former U.S. Men’s National Team and MLS goalkeeper Tony Meola was named the Jacksonville Armada FC Head Coach and Technical Director on Nov. 24, 2015. Meola has been a prominent figure in U.S. Soccer since he stormed onto the scene in 1987 when he helped lead the U-20 National Team at the 1987 FIFA World Youth Championship in goal. Following a two-year college career at the University of Virginia, where he was a two-time All-American under the guidance of U.S. Soccer icon Bruce Arena, Meola embarked on an illustrious international career in 1988 with the U.S. Men’s National Team, which included three FIFA World Cups (1999, 1994, and 2002).

ASSISTANT COACH JIM ROONEY

Tony Meola named former MLS All-Star and U.S. National Team U-17 assistant coach Jim Rooney as his top management on Nov. 25, 2015. A native of the Bronx, New York, Rooney was a midfielder who played with Meola at the Long Island Rough Riders in 1995 and at the New York/New Jersey MetroStars in 1998 and 1999. Rooney made 116 career appearances in MLS with the MetroStars, Miami Fusion and New England Revolution.

ASSISTANT COACH MARK LOWRY

Tony Meola added Mark Lowry to his staff as an Assistant Coach on Dec. 30, 2015. Lowry, who served as an Interim Assistant Coach under Eric Dade in the Armada’s final seven weeks of the 2015 North American Soccer League Fall Season, came to Jacksonville following three years as a coach at the Orlando City Soccer Club’s U.S. Soccer Development Academy program. He also served as a coach for Armada FC youth development partner Jacksonville FC’s U.S. Soccer development program.

ASSISTANT TECHNICAL DIRECTOR NATHAN WALTER

Nathan Walter has been with the Jacksonville Armada FC since the club’s beginning stages, joining in 2013 as employee No. 2. He originally served as the Director of Soccer for Sunshine Soccer Agency, the holding corporation of the Armada FC and then took on the role of Director of Soccer Operations in 2014 once the club began its official NASL operations. Walter also served as an interim assistant coach in the last eight weeks of the 2015 NASL Fall Season. In December 2015, Walter was promoted to the club’s Assistant Technical Director.

TONY’S NOTES It is always good to come home to Community First Park after a series of road games. As you know well, every game counts, and that makes every game here at our home pitch even more important. Tonight is an opportunity. We can’t take anything for granted. Every time we have the chance to get a point, I call that an opportunity. We are facing an Indy Eleven team that has been through the same struggles that we have. They have made changes by adding and trading players and they know what it takes to be a contender. Coach Hankinson has long history of coaching in American soccer, and our paths have crossed many times. I trust that he has studied us as much as we will study his team. He definitely knows how to create chances with his squad and that is key to Indy’s attack. Our goal, as always, is to play our game and walk away with that point. Thank you again for your great support. You are the reason we come out to play.

- Head Coach & Technical Director, Tony Meola

MATT FONDY, IGNITING THE FIRE # 9 MATT FONDY Forward Matt Fondy is searching for his next goal to kindle the spark and ignite the cannon fire at Community First Park. With an experience behind him and niche for putting the ball in the back of the net, Fondy is confident that he can help build the Armada into a NASL contender. Q: How has the NASL surprised you? “I definitely think there is a high level of experience in this league. There are players from all over the world. The international support with the new television deals is great for the league. It is a growing league for sure. Whereas in the USL there is a younger, fresh out-of-college group of talent that is motivated to grow. My experience thus far has been good. The city has treated me very well. The home matches are fun. The atmosphere in Community First Park is great. I am enjoying it.” Q: Does it motivate you to have good support from everyone, including Section 904? “Each team has a culture to their supporters groups and ours is 5.28.2016 ARMADA MATCHDAY

definitely no exception. I am looking forward to getting to know them more and hopefully putting a couple of goals in to see how rowdy it could get them. I looking forward to adding to the atmosphere. Q: You aren’t quite where you want to be yet. What motivates you to push through your goal draught? It is hard to articulate, but once you get the first one, you start to build that confidence and then you start to score more. It is pretty much just that simple. I am always focused on scoring. Q: What is the best goal you ever remember scoring?

“IMPROVING AS A PLAYER AND BUILDING CHEMISTRY WITH THIS TEAM HAVE TO BE AT THE TOP OF MY LIST” “My rookie season I played for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in the USL. I had a good rookie season. I had a bunch of appearances, plenty of starts, not as many goals as I would have liked, but overall a relatively successful season. Then I moved on and played for the LA Blues. We had a game back in Pittsburgh, and I remember their supporters group heckling me. They were calling me the ‘Pittsburgh Reject’ and just some brutal things. It was the 90th minute, we were tied 1-1 and I scored the goal to win the game and I will

9 Matt Fondy. The 26-year-old striker signed with Jacksonville in December, helped lead Louisville City to the Eastern Conference final in its first season in the league. He scored 22 goals, six of which were game-winners, and notched seven assists after starting every league match. His goal mark from 2015 shattered the league’s previous high mark of 20. Before making the move to Louisville City, Fondy made 15 combined appearances for MLS clubs Chicago Fire (2014) and Chivas USA (2013). He has tallied 38 total goals in USL play, which includes stops with the Los Angeles Blues (2012) and Pittsburgh Riverhounds (2011).

never forget the silence. You could only hear my team’s celebration. It was something I won’t ever forget.” Q: What do you want to accomplish here in Jacksonville? Improving as a player and building chemistry with this team have to be at the top my list. I think once that happens, we can put the end goal to the side and focus on one game at a time and try and get things to click a bit more. That is how we will accomplish that goal. Q: The U.S. Open Cup is right around the corner. Predictions? “I have played the Charleston Battery a number of times in Charleston and away from Charleston. They are always a good team, they put together a good connected side. They move the ball, defend well and stay organized. It can definitely be a challenge. It’s not going to be an easy win. It will be good test for us. The Open Cup is a good opportunity to show different leagues and different teams what they are made of. It think everyone is going to be hungry. We all want to be successful in whatever competition that we compete in.”

‘PEPP TALK’ WITH

COLE PEPPER

JACKSONVILLE’S CUP RUNNETH OVER Last week’s news that the Armada could host Orlando City in a fourth round match in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup breathed new life into the Spring Season. But first, they’ll need to take care of business in the third round on June 1 when the Armada hosts the Charleston Battery at Jacksonville University.

at

While the Spring Season isn’t over yet, the Armada can’t win the season. Still, there is plenty to play for (like points that can help in the overall standings at the end of the year), and most of all, the Armada needs a good run of performances. The US Open Cup offers not only a chance at rejuvenation for this season, but some level of retribution for last year’s poor performance in the competition. Under the former coaching staff, the importance of the Cup wasn’t embraced and the level of competition wasn’t respected. That won’t be the case under Tony Meola, who played much of his professional career in Kansas City for a team owned by Lamar Hunt, for whom the US Open Cup trophy is named. “I can’t remember a time when the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup wasn’t important to me,” Meola said on his weekly radio show last week. “We’ll put the best team out there that we can.” The U.S. Open Cup also offers a chance for Armada players to measure themselves against competition that they won’t see every day, whether that’s a third division team like the Charleston Battery from the United Soccer League (USL) or an MLS side like Orlando City. Last year, it was a road match against the Richmond Kickers of the USL, a match that the Armada lost 3-0. This year, Jacksonville won’t have to travel for at least their first two Cup matches. Who knows, maybe as the tournament progresses, it’s just the thing the Armada needs to find their groove.

THE VISITORS INDY ELEVEN

RACING FOR THE FINISH The NASL Spring Season is wide open, and Indy Eleven remains the only unbeaten team in the leagues sits in a good position to move up on the table. Before the start of this season, the Eleven brought in new head coach and one of the Major League Soccer coaching pioneers, Tim Hankinson. Hankinson got down to business, adding a wealth of experienced players, including goalkeeper Jon Busch, defender Nemanja Vukovic, midfielder Gorka Larrea and Colombian forward Jair Reinoso. Indy also made key additions in defender Colin Falvey, midfielder Siniša Ubiparipović and midfielder Nicki Paterson from the 2015 Ottawa Fury FC, which finished as the NASL Championship runner-up.

MORE BOYS IN BLUE Armada FC aren’t the only NASL team with a strong military identity. Formed as Indy Pro Soccer, the club officially adopted its Indy Eleven identity on April 25, 2013, during a ceremony held at the iconic Soldiers and Sailors Monument, taking place 152 years to the day of the initial enlistment of the 11th Indiana Regiment during the Civil War. The inspiration for the name came from Donna Schmink, the Collection Manager at the Indiana War Museum.

NASL RESULTS GP – 6 W–2 L–4 T–0 PTS–10 The Brickyard Battalion, Indy Eleven’s supporters group with a membership of more than 4,000, affectionately refers to their squad as the “Boys in Blue,” which is yet another homage to the military history of the area and their team’s checker blue kits.

PRESSURE IS ON Despite losing early club acquisitions and keystones the cub was built on like Kristian Nicht, Kleberson, Sergio Pena and Dane Richards, the team has compiled some impressive results with a six-game unbeaten streak to start 2016.

Newcomer Gorka Larrea, a former Levante, Real Sociedad and Montreal Impact midfielder, has added depth and ability proving to be a key to Indy Eleven’s attacks from the back. Following the departure of first signing Kristian Nicht, Indy Eleven secured a major signing in longtime veteran Jon Busch. The former MLS Goalkeeper of the Year has always been seen as a good organizer out of the back, but with a new-look defense in front of him, his leadership and expertise have been a key component in cohesion of the team.
