5.28.2016 ARMADA MATCHDAY
TONIGHT’S MATCH Presented by:
vs.
Tonight the Armada FC host the Ottawa Fury FC at Community First Park for a special Cultural Arts Night presented by Community First Credit Union. The Armada FC will celebrate the beautiful Arts and Culture that has made Jacksonville a unique and diverse city. Fans are invited to join in on the fun and paint with Nico Suave on Jacksonville’s largest mural wall. Children will also have their own unique crafts area presented by Lowe’s where they can construct Build and Grow kits. The Museum of Science and History (MOSH) will be present in the village, offering attendees a chance to participate in interactive activities. Fans will also be able to enjoy the delectable treats from local food trucks and try their hand at playing exciting games. All the exciting match day traditions will commence as the team takes the pitch tonight. As always, it will be easy to know when the Armada players find the back of the net. Prior to every home match and after every Armada goal scored, the cannons will be fired. Just before the teams enter the pitch for team introductions, the Armada’s biggest nautical supporter, Squid Vicious, is released in stunning fashion casting a shadow over the opposition and showing its eight-legged support for the ‘‘Boys in Blue.’’
OH CANADA Ottawa returns to Jacksonville holding a 3-1-0 all-time record against the Armada FC, most recently besting the fleet in the Canadian Capital with a 88th minute goal from Marcel De Jong. In the last meeting at Community First Park in October of 2015 the Fury FC defeated the Armada, 3-1, and wrapped up the NASL Fall Season title to earn their spot the 2015 Championship playoff. Ottawa Head Coach and General Manager Paul Dalglish will have his Fury playing for points and look to continue their reign over Armada FC. Needless to say, Tony Meola’s squad are looking to snap that record and snatch three points at home against a vulnerable Ottawa struggling to gain points on the road.

TECHNICAL STAFF HEAD COACH/TECHNICAL DIRECTOR TONY MEOLA
Legendary former U.S. Men’s National Team and MLS goalkeeper Tony Meola was named the Jacksonville Armada FC Head Coach and Technical Director on Nov. 24, 2015. Meola has been a prominent figure in U.S. Soccer since he stormed onto the scene in 1987 when he helped lead the U-20 National Team at the 1987 FIFA World Youth Championship in goal. Following a two-year college career at the University of Virginia, where he was a two-time All-American under the guidance of U.S. Soccer icon Bruce Arena, Meola embarked on an illustrious international career in 1988 with the U.S. Men’s National Team, which included three FIFA World Cups (1999, 1994, and 2002).
ASSISTANT COACH JIM ROONEY
Tony Meola named former MLS All-Star and U.S. National Team U-17 assistant coach Jim Rooney as his top management on Nov. 25, 2015. A native of the Bronx, New York, Rooney was a midfielder who played with Meola at the Long Island Rough Riders in 1995 and at the New York/New Jersey MetroStars in 1998 and 1999. Rooney made 116 career appearances in MLS with the MetroStars, Miami Fusion and New England Revolution.
ASSISTANT COACH MARK LOWRY
Tony Meola added Mark Lowry to his staff as an Assistant Coach on Dec. 30, 2015. Lowry, who served as an Interim Assistant Coach under Eric Dade in the Armada’s final seven weeks of the 2015 North American Soccer League Fall Season, came to Jacksonville following three years as a coach at the Orlando City Soccer Club’s U.S. Soccer Development Academy program. He also served as a coach for Armada FC youth development partner Jacksonville FC’s U.S. Soccer development program.
ASSISTANT TECHNICAL DIRECTOR NATHAN WALTER
Nathan Walter has been with the Jacksonville Armada FC since the club’s beginning stages, joining in 2013 as employee No. 2. He originally served as the Director of Soccer for Sunshine Soccer Agency, the holding corporation of the Armada FC and then took on the role of Director of Soccer Operations in 2014 once the club began its official NASL operations. Walter also served as an interim assistant coach in the last eight weeks of the 2015 NASL Fall Season. In December 2015, Walter was promoted to the club’s Assistant Technical Director.

TONY’S NOTES We are deep into this NASL season and still have a lot of work to do. It was clear from day one that we were going to have to work at it all year long and that has proven to be true game after game. We are at the point in the season where we will be have to roll up our sleeves and fight hard to get these results. Ottawa have our number right now. They have beaten us in three out of our four meetings. However, I know that they are also in desperate times and will be looking to capitalize on their trip down to Florida. I have a lot of respect for Coach Dalglish and I know he craves the same results that we do here. They have a lot to play for and will bring it to us if we let them. We are expecting a fight and will hand one right back to them. As a player I always enjoyed the home fixtures more. Whether it was in at Briton & Hove, New York or the U.S. National Team. You can’t beat the backing of your local supporters. Jacksonville is no exception. We have a stellar group of supporters here who want to see the best from there team. We intend to deliver that and work hard to achieve that every day. We are on a mission. I want to thank you for support this team and coming out this evening match.
- Head Coach & Technical Director, Tony Meola

DREAMS DO COME TRUE #4 MECHACK JÉRÔME
Since signing with the Jacksonville Armada FC in September of 2015, Mechack Jérôme has anchored the backline for both club and country. This defender has nearly 50 appearances with Haitian National Team and a canon of a leg that is likely to launch a shot at net whenever given the opportunity. While Jérôme has accomplished much in his young career, he is still hungry for much more. Q: What is the most popular sport in Haiti? Definitely Soccer. Basketball is pretty popular, but soccer is huge where I come from. Q: Did you always want to be a soccer player when you were growing up? Yes. I has always been my dream. I can honestly say that my dream has come true. I always want to play for the (Haitian) National Team. At that time. I didn’t know how I was going to get there, but somehow I did and it makes me so happy. My dream has come true. Q: How did that dream come true? I grew up in the streets of Haiti. My father used to play in our home town team, so I always got a bit of respect. I started playing on a vacation team, 7.23.2016 ARMADA MATCHDAY

where I did extremely well at. I impressed some coaches and was called up to play on my city’s second division team, Triomphe Liancourt. I played two years there, before my coach told me he was sending me to use my talent in a bigger city in Port-auPrince. At the same time I got the tryout with the U-17 national team. They only had spots for two player and I was one of the two players chosen out of the 90 players that were invited to try out for the National Team. It was a real blessing.
“I FEEL THE CONFIDENCE BUILDING ON THE WHOLE TEAM. WE KNOW THAT WE CAN GET RESULTS, BUT WE ALSO FEEL LIKE WE CAN COMPETE WITH ANY TEAM IN THIS LEAGUE.” I played in the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2007 was moved to the U-22 national team. From there I was called up to the Senior (Haitian National) team in 2008. At the same time I signed for my first division team Baltimore SC in Saint-Marc a city near my home. Eventually, I was able to play with SC Mirandela in Portugal before moving over to USL and eventually the MLS. God has been good to me. Q: Where do you want to go from here? I want more. When you get the chance to play against big clubs like Brazil, it gives you confidence. You see these teams on the TV, but the opportunity to play against them is actually amazing.
#4 MECHACK JÉRÔME.
Jérôme began his professional career at the age of 16 with Baltimore de St. Mark in Haiti’s top league before moving on to Mirandela of the Portuguese second division. In 2010, he joined Armada goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo at the Austin Aztex and then Orlando City SC when the club moved. Jérôme appeared in 14 matches during Orlando City’s 2011 USL Championship run and scored one goal with three assists in 20 games for the club’s 2012 regular season title. In 2013, he signed with Major League Soccer’s Sporting KC, appearing in 10 league games, a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open cup contest and three CONCACAF Champions League matches. Jérôme finished with an assist in 677 minutes of MLS play for Sporting KC and helped the club win the MLS Cup.
I want to play in World Cup! That has to be my goal. That is every true soccer player’s goal. Q: Are you a better player now after playing the Copa América Centenario? I am definitely more mature. Playing against better players gives you more experience. That is what I want. Playing in World Cup qualifiers is extremely competitive and this is what I thrive off of - Being the best that I can be. Q: What made you want to resign with the Armada FC in November last year? Actually, I really like this team. It is a good city. You have good people here. Last year, I want to move up a division and this was the best place for me to come. It worked out nicely. I still have the same confidence I had last year and I fell it coming. We are going to be successful. Q: How are you working with Coach Tony Meola? He is a good guy. He sees my talent and is using me in different areas. When you are not doing well you will see some turn around on the team. I feel the confidence building on the whole team. We know that we can get results, but we also feel like we can compete with any team in this league.

MENTALLY TOUGH If it’s true that adversity doesn’t build character, it reveals it, then the Armada will have their character revealed this week. Just 10 days removed from a battle for first place in the North American Soccer League’s fall season, the Armada have returned home with the Ottawa Fury and a test of character facing them. Saturday night’s loss in Miami, as Jacksonville defender Tyler Ruthven said, heartbreaking. For over 80 minutes, the Armada played a man down after an 11th minute red card on Beto Navarro left them shorthanded. That test of adversity revealed the Armada’s best defensive effort of the year, only to see a deflected shot and a controversial non-call on an offside decision leave them on the losing end of a 1-0 decision. Now, the Armada will have to contend with a hungry Ottawa Fury side, the heat of a 5pm kickoff and a two match losing streak that really shouldn’t even exist. But there is reason for hope. The pending return to the lineup of midfielder Pekka Lagerblom and the addition of two signees from Sweden, Alexander Andersson and Nicklas Maripuu offers that chance to radically improve the attack. If the Armada can fold those three talented Europeans into the existing team that has only conceded more than two goals once this year, then Tony Meola’s team could climb back into contention in the fall season. With four games down and 18 to go in the fall, there is still a lot of soccer to play. Revealing the character and mental toughness of the Armada will provide good reason for optimism as the Boys in Blue set their sights on championship contention. That’s the best way to turn the gut-punch of a loss in Miami into fuel for the team’s competitive fire.

THE VISITORS OTTAWA FURY FC
SOCCER IN THE CANADIAN CAPITAL Tonight’s opponent comes to the Bold City all the way from the Great White North. Founded in 2011, the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group, Ottawa Fury FC didn’t enter the North American Soccer League’s until the 2014 season. In just their second season after a ninth-place finish in the spring season standings, the Fury FC came back in fall and landed the top spot on the standings which booked their spot for the NASL’s Championship game. They played against the New York Cosmos, but ultimately fell short after a 3-2 loss. The club plays its home matches at TD Place in Ottawa, Ontario and is led by President John Pugh and Head Coach and General Manager Paul Dalglish. The latter received most of his experience while playing as a forward with various teams across the seas, garnering over 200 appearances and over 20 goals between 1997 and 2008. It wasn’t until 2009 when he began managing teams, starting with a stint as assistant coach with Houston Dynamo where he played for two years back in 2006. He’s been with the Fury FC since beginning of the 2016 season.
