TONIGHT’S MATCH PRESENTED BY

vs. Tonight’s match marks the beginning of the Armada FC’s thrilling series of preseason showdowns against three Major League Soccer opponents throughout the month of February. It also marks the return to Community First Park at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville and Head Coach Tony Meola’s first match in charge of the team. All of the exciting matchday traditions that have made Community First Park the premier soccer experience return to action for the team’s second season on the pitch. As always, it will not be hard to know when the Armada FC players find the back of the net. Prior to every home match, and after every Armada FC goal scored, the cannon will be fired. Just before the teams enter the pitch for team Introductions, the Armada FC’s biggest nautical supporter, Squid Vicious, is released in stunning fashion. Squid Vicious is a mythological, seafaring beast that comes ashore for all Armada FC home matches. Finally, a representative from Armada FC partner Community First Credit Union will raise the Armada FC flag high above the pitch immediately preceding the singing of the National Anthem and signal the start of the 2016 Armada FC preseason. Tonight’s match is also a rematch of the team’s inaugural victory where the Armada first set sail, riding three first-half goals to a 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Union In front of a modern era NASL preseason record 13,934 fans at EverBank Field on February 7, 2015.

TECHNICAL STAFF HEAD COACH/TECHNICAL DIRECTOR TONY MEOLA

Legendary former U.S. Men’s National Team and MLS goalkeeper Tony Meola was named the Jacksonville Armada FC Head Coach and Technical Director on Nov. 24, 2015. Meola has been a prominent figure in U.S. Soccer since he stormed onto the scene in 1987 when he helped lead the U-20 National Team at the 1987 FIFA World Youth Championship in goal. Following a two-year college career at the University of Virginia, where he was a two-time All-American under the guidance of U.S. Soccer icon Bruce Arena, Meola embarked on an illustrious international career in 1988 with the U.S. Men’s National Team, which included three FIFA World Cups ( 1999, 1994, and 2002).

ASSISTANT COACH JIM ROONEY

Tony Meola named former MLS All-Star and U.S. National Team U-17 assistant coach Jim Rooney as his top management on Nov. 25, 2015. A native of the Bronx, New York, Rooney was a midfielder who played with Meola at the Long Island Rough Riders in 1995 and at the New York/New Jersey MetroStars in 1998 and 1999. Rooney made 116 career appearances in MLS with the MetroStars, Miami Fusion and New England Revolution.

ASSISTANT COACH MARK LOWRY

Tony Meola added Mark Lowry to his staff as an Assistant Coach on Dec. 30, 2015. Lowry, who served as an Interim Assistant Coach under Eric Dade in the Armada’s final seven weeks of the 2015 North American Soccer League Fall Season, came to Jacksonville following three years as a coach at the Orlando City Soccer Club’s U.S. Soccer Development Academy program. He also served as a coach for Armada FC youth development partner Jacksonville FC’s U.S. Soccer development program.

ASSISTANT TECHNICAL DIRECTOR NATHAN WALTER

Nathan Walter has been with the Jacksonville Armada FC since the club’s beginning stages, joining in 2013 as employee No. 2. He originally served as the Director of Soccer for Sunshine Soccer Agency, the holding corporation of the Armada FC and then took on the role of Director of Soccer Operations in 2014 once the club began its official NASL operations. Walter also served as an interim assistant coach in the last eight weeks of the 2015 NASL Fall Season. In December 2015, Walter was promoted to the club’s Assistant Technical Director.

TONY’S NOTES For our team, this is a good first test. Tonight’s match is a great opportunity for us as coaches and the new players to get a feel for Community First Park for the first time from what the locker rooms feel like, to how the grass feels and atmosphere as a whole park. Some people might not feel that is all that important, but I feel it is essential. We want to feel comfortable in our environment. We certainly don’t want opening day (April 15 vs. Miami FC) to be the first time we walk out there and experience what Community First Park is like. So with this match, just like all the other preseason games, I’m, am not looking at the score at the end of the match. They don’t mean that much right now. That being said, we will have one or two missions in tonight’s game. When the preseason is over, we will evaluate whether we accomplished those goals. When we look at these games, we want to build on each one of these each games. So tonight’s match against Philadelphia is the start of us building from the bottom up on how we approach things both defensively and offensively. I want to thank everyone that has supported our endeavor and continues to help us build the Armada FC. Tonight, just like any night, is something we are looking forward to; a great match and a fun event. Thanks for coming out!

- Head Coach & Technical Director Tony Meola

TACKLING YEAR TWO Lucas Scaglia, the Jacksonville Armada FC’s silent leader and steady workforce in the midfield, returns to Community First Park tonight for another battle with MLS’s Philadelphia Union. The Argentinian remains passionate and committed to finishing what he started in Jacksonville. Scaglia, a childhood friend of Lionel Messi, brings his defensive-minded approach to Tony Meola’s new squad. Q: Are you ready for round two? Yeah, I’m very excited. It’s my second year, a new era and I’m ready to accomplish what we couldn’t last year. Q: Does playing the Union again bring back good memories? Of course! That was an amazing day for our organization 2.6.2016

ARMADA MATCHDAY

and I believe it set a standard for the club. I want to see us reach those heights again. Q: You have not worn the captain’s arm band, but you’re always a leader on the field. Will you play that same role this year with this new group? Not necessarily. It’s just always the way I’ve played. It’s the way I go about games on any team, and I really liked that I’ve always had that attitude on the field with my teammates. I’ve just always played that way and to me the band doesn’t really represent much. I’m just trying to encourage my team, encourage my teammates to do well. Q: So you’re just a natural leader? That’s just how I am. It’s more about my position demanding that role. I’m a center midfielder, so I have to know where everybody is and make sure everybody is doing their job. So on the pitch, I have always been like this. Q: There have been a lot of changes in just the short time. What do you think of your new coaching staff and teammates? In the beautiful game, I’ve always had those changes; people go, coaches go,

Lucas Scaglia, a midfielder from Rosario, Argentina, signed with the Armada FC on Jan. 29, 2015. Known as an agressive defensive-minded midfielder he has extensive experience playing professionally in Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Croatia, Greece, Spain and the United States. Scaglia played 2,295 in 26 matches for the Armada FC in 2015.

teammates go, but it’s soccer. It’s part of it, and I think that the guys they’ve brought in have come with a good attitude and they’re good guys. They bring the best approach every day and give it their all for the group during training. As far as the coaches go, they are coaching well and they’re organized. They’re bringing in an attitude that will bring the team together, which is good. Q: Do you fit well in this system? Yeah, everybody came with a good attitude, and everybody is happy on the pitch. It’s a good atmosphere and then these guys are also bringing good attitudes. Q: So I hear you’re a tennis player. How’d you get into tennis? I didn’t start when I was young, but my family likes to play, and there is a court really close to my house in Rosario. I used to play every day. My family always plays, so I have always liked hitting the ball. Until recently, I have only played about once in six years.

CATCH THE LATEST EPISODES THE ARMADA SOCCER SHOW ON SPORTS RADIO 930AM

‘PEPP TALK’ WITH COLE PEPPER Last year about this time, the city was abuzz with anticipation for the inaugural match for the Armada. Nearly 14,000 fans cheered on Jacksonville’s new pro soccer team to a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union and the first strong evidence of Jacksonville’s love affair with the Armada had begun. Inaugural campaign included some highs (great community and corporate support, outstanding interaction with youth soccer and a lot of fun) and some lows (ahem … you can check out the final NASL table for yourself). This year, once again, an air of anticipation hangs over the First Coast, but for different reasons. Some of the questions that were asked last year (“Is this really a THING?”) have been answered in the affirmative. But others remain. Notably, this question: Is this team going to be better on the field? There are a number of reasons why I think the answer will be yes. Here are a few: 1. Talent - It appears in early training sessions that the roster includes more talent. Some of the familiar names from last year are going to be pushed by new faces. 2. League knowledge - Last year, the Armada learned a great deal about the NASL on and off the pitch. That knowledge should be valuable this season, even with a new coaching staff. Tony Meola is very familiar with the players and coaches in the NASL, having broadcast a number of league matches last season. 3. Expansion teams - Last year, the Armada were the only expansion team in the league. Everybody thought they could pick on the new guys (and some of them did!). This year, Miami FC, Rayo OKC and, in the Fall Season, Puerto Rico FC join. The Armada are no longer the new kids on the block. 4. Communication - Everybody—players, coaches, support staff—is speaking the same language, literally and metaphorically. That has to help. 5. Connections - The connections that Tony Meola and his staff have to domestic and high level international soccer are impressive. If Meola has a coaching question, he can always turn to his mentor Bruce Arena, the former U.S. Men’s National Team coach. That’s a pretty impressive sounding board. The result against Philadelphia may not be a harbinger of things to come, but the performance on the field will tell us a lot about where the Armada is in its progression in 2016.

THE VISITORS PHILADELPHIA UNION

#1 Andre Blake MATCHDAY HISTORY

Major League Soccer’s only current Pennsylvania-based team will be entering its seventh season tonight. The Philadelphia Union will once again begin its preseason against the Jacksonville Armada FC. This game comes a year and a day after falling 3-1 to the Armada in Jacksonville in front of 13,934 fans, a North American Soccer League preseason record. It was the Armada’s inaugural match.

THE PHILADELPHIA UNION

MLS’s 16th team was founded in late February 2008 by Keystone Sports & Entertainment. The story behind the team’s name, colors, and crest all give tribute to various moments in Philadelphia’s abundant colonial history. Those historic attributes include the choice to use navy blue and gold as the team’s colors to represent the Continental Army’s uniforms during the American Revolutionary War. The team’s motto, “Jungite Aut Perite” which is a Latin translation of the phrase “join or die,” and the rattlesnake on the team’s badge, both encompass Philadelphia’s history by paying homage to a 1754 Pennsylvania Gazette political cartoon by Benjamin Franklin. Speaking of Franklin, it’s safe to say that Philadelphia would not have a soccer team if not for the group of soccer fanatics that have dubbed themselves The Sons of Ben. At more than 5,000 members, this group has given ample amounts of support to the team since the very beginning. They can be found at home and away games rocking their team’s colors and chanting “C’mon The U!”

2015 NUMBERS

NEW FACES IN PHILLY

Both sides meet tonight with new faces added to their rosters. The Union has signed on both midfielders and defenders. Defender Joshua Yaro, who was selected second overall in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft, will begin his MLS career this year. Yaro played collegiately at NCAA I program Georgetown University and brings with him an impressive amount of national and regional recognition. Among his awards, Yaro was an NSCAA First Team All-American and Big East Player of the Year in 2015 and was a semifinalist for the MAC Herman Trophy in 2015 Midfielder Christopher Pontius joins the Union after a long, seven-year career with DC United. There he scored his first goal as a pro during his debut on March 22, 2009 against the Los Angeles Galaxy. Pontius helped lead DC United to a Lamar Hunt U.S. Cup win in 2013 and played in the 2012 MLS All-Star game. Other new faces to join Philly include Walter Restrepo from the NASL’s New York Cosmos, third overall 2016 MLS SuperDraft pick Keegan Rosenberry, second-round draft pick Taylor Washington, and Germany native Fabian Herbers.

A SECOND CHANCE

For the second year in a row, the Philadelphia Union reached the finals in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Cup during its 2015 season despite finishing ninth in the MLS Eastern Conference standings. The game was held on September 30, 2015 at Philadelphia’s home stadium in front of over 14,000 fans. During the game, the Union’s Sebastian Le Toux started their momentum by scoring the team’s first and only goal. The Union went on to fall to Sporting Kansas City on penalty kicks (7-6).
