The Armada FC’s first match at Community First Park promises to be as fun and spectacular an occasion as the club’s inaugural match on Feb. 7, with a huge post-match fireworks display presented by Community First Credit Union scheduled to launch the Armada with a bang. The match will be preceded by a three-hour, pre-match block party which will take place on East Duval and Georgia Street around the stadium. The Armada Matchday Experience, hosted by The Beat 93.3 FM’s T-Roy and presented by PRI Productions, is free to all match-goers and runs from 4-7 p.m. It features live music on a large entertainment stage, the Coors Light Beer Garden, Grillman’s Franks, merchandise and concessions areas and The Armada Soccer Experience – a range of inflatable soccer attractions for fans of all ages. Fans will also be able to join the Armada FC March to the Match from the main stage into the stadium via East Duval Street and A. Philip Randolph Street, at 6:45 p.m. Armada FC owner and CEO Mark Frisch will continue the club’s pre-match, flag-raising tradition and become the first to hoist the Armada FC club flag over Community First Park at 7:20 p.m. The team will also sport their home blue uniforms presented by Winn-Dixie and Key Auto for the first time. Former Jacksonville Tea Men and U.S. National Soccer Hall of Fame goalkeeper Arnie Mausser raised the flag for the first time at EverBank Field, linking the old North American Soccer League club to its modern-day successor, the Armada – a bond which Frisch will ceremonially complete on Saturday night. Community First Credit Union President John Hirabayashi will join the match officials at midfield to conduct the pre-match coin toss shortly before the 7:30 p.m. kickoff. The Strikers – now part-owned by Brazilian soccer legend Ronaldo – and Tea Men enjoyed an at times hostile in-state rivalry during the early days of the NASL. That rivalry is set to continue with the Armada. Cannon fire and fog-horn blasts will herald any Armada goals during the match. The halftime show stars Disc-Connected K-9’s, a 13-strong Frisbee dog troop with three dogs performing and a surprise special guest will be introduced to the crowd during the second half! Don’t forget the official post-match pub of the Armada FC is the Jacksonville Sports Tavern located directly across from Community First Park.

2.7.2015 Match day

Coaches Notes

Guillermo Hoyos & JosÊ Luis Villarreal We achieved our first big win against the Philadelphia Union earlier this month, and it was an important one. We controlled the play for much of the game and showed a lot of heart in making sure that we held onto the win throughout the second half. Most of these players have only been playing together for a short period of time and worked very well together in front of that stellar crowd. We had to work hard and in the end, we achieved an important victory for the entire city. Now that we have made it through that monumental first home match, we must focus on the task at hand. Our ambitions are clear, and we are now focused on maintaining our performance. The preseason is only the beginning of a long season ahead and every match demands our complete concentration. Tonight’s match will be our first test against a team in our own league. The North American Soccer League has some very some impressive signings and a strong lineup this year, including German international Fabian Kling and MLS-experienced Jordan Graye. We must go into every match preparing to face the highest caliber of team. Most of all, we want to continue to see the support that we witnessed at the first match at EverBank Field. It was an extremely impressive night not only from the team, but from all the fans that came out to see the team in action for the first time. So many of you have poured your faith in what we have been working to create, and we want to continue to deliver results. The boys feed off of the support of the crowd, so keep coming, because every one of you makes a difference.

Dario Sala’s journey Creating the team of his dreams In May 2013, when general manager Dario Sala first met with team owner Mark Frisch, he knew they were on to something special. A “diamond in the rough” who signed with first division Argentinian powerhouse San Lorenzo after an open tryout, Sala’s story is similar to many of the prospects he seeks to discover on a daily basis. After his once-in-a lifetime opportunity to join San Lorenzo and being in goal for teams like River Plate and Independiente of Argentina and Deportivo Cali in Colombia, Sala went on to stop the fierce shots of some of South America’s best strikers in the Copa Libertadores and later found success in the United States, joining FC Dallas in 2005 and being named to the MLS All-Star Team the next year. While at FC Dallas, Sala received such accolades as Defender of the Year and Team MVP as voted by the fans. In 2010, Sala was selected over every other professional athlete in Dallas when he was awarded the ESPN Hometown Hero for his contributions both on and off the field. Following his playing career, he launched a successful venture as a player agent in 2010, scouting and representing some of the most talented soccer players worldwide. With all of these accomplishments, Sala knew he had been blessed with an exceptional career and felt an obligation to give back to the game in his adopted homeland. He wanted to create something special – and decided Jacksonville was the place where he could do exactly that. Tell us about your journey to creating this team. I first met Mark (Frisch) in May 2013, when he was toying with the idea of starting a professional soccer team in Jacksonville. He wanted to make Northeast Florida a soccer destination, and I wanted to be part of it. My wife’s family lives in Jacksonville, and I know how special this community is. I easily saw the same potential that Mark saw. We formed the Sunshine Soccer Group, and our first big project was promoting a match between Tigres and Cruz Azul, two major clubs in Mexico. From there, we began to work with different people around the city and the country. Mark focused on building a great relationship with the city, and I set my sights on finding players to bring to Jacksonville. The city had not had a professional soccer team in years, so I was taking on the task of convincing players that Jacksonville would be a desirable place to play. I had to sell players on both the city and the vision – and the latter was more difficult. It’s definitely a challenge to convince professional players to believe in your idea when you’re in a new market and building an organization from the ground up.

2.28.2015 Match day

What does the success of that first match mean to you? It was so special. We spent two years working toward this moment, and we only had one shot to get it right. During those 90 minutes, I saw all the sacrifice and all the hard work starting to pay off. To see the supporters reap the benefits of our efforts, it made me very emotional. It was the greatest moment I have experienced since I took this position. Look at the players and staff that we have. I truly believe we did it the right way, even if the road was long and hard. We got the coaching staff in early to give them the best chance to prepare, and we held tryouts to find the best talent available. Throughout it all, Mark and I had a vision about creating a community-oriented team. Our core values here are passion, progress and determination. And I think those attributes were on full display at the first match. The team showed determination and courage taking the lead and holding it to the end. The fans really showed their passion. We offered a great experience and the community showed up in record numbers to enjoy it. How did you feel after seeing the team up 3-1 at halftime? To be honest? I wanted to cry. Even after that second early goal, I wanted to go into the locker room and shed some tears of joy. I was so proud of what we had accomplished and what the future has to offer. But we can’t live in the past. We had an excellent first match. We have made the city, our players and our amazing fans very happy. It was a great experience, but we have to put our emotions aside and stay focused on our long-term goal. And that goal is to win the North American Soccer League Championship. As we work to achieve that goal, we want to instill our values to make sure the Armada FC represents Jacksonville in the most impressive way possible. We want to create a winning mentality here, so everyone in town knows that they have a quality soccer team to support. How impressed were you with the support the team received? The fans here are absolutely fantastic. As an Argentinean, I appreciate a passionate, knowledgeable and engaged fan base. I saw that during our first match, and I absolutely loved it. Even when I’m going over highlights from the game, I notice the fans and their enthusiasm for the full 90 minutes. Many of them probably had no idea what to expect when they arrived at the stadium, but those near-14,000 fans gave everything they had during the game, and it inspired the team. You could see the players reacting to it on the field. We want that intensity. (We have) only played one game, and I can genuinely say that we have true fans here. I want these fans to come to every game and cheer us on. I encourage every fan to bring their family and friends out to our games. We want a big Armada family. I promise it’ll be a family that we can all be proud of.

Into the Blue with Jemal Johnson

Jemal Johnson is no stranger to today’s matchup. In fact, the former Premier League striker spend the 2013 spring season with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. Johnson, originally from Paterson, N. J., moved to England at a young age and began his career in the youth academies of Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers. Johnson’s talented skillset has earned him 25 goals and 13 assist in 217 appearances before joining the frontline of the Armada FC this past December.

Into the Blue with Jemal Johnson In addition to a natural talent and passion for the game, Johnson brings a unique outlook to Jacksonville. In the short time he has spent with the Armada FC, he has built a strong affinity for the club and the community it represents. Johnson took time out of his busy training schedule to sit down and share some of his enthusiasm. What do you expect to see from the Strikers this season? With all the investment that this team has made this year and Brazilian conglomerate that is working with them, I feel as though they are going to do well in 2015. Now that they have Ronaldo (Luís Nazário de Lima) behind them, which by the way is one of my biggest idols as a soccer player, I think they have got a really good team down there. I know quite a few of the players on their team. From my experience playing there, they have got a good set up. What do you think about the Armada FC’s first match against another Florida city? I like the sound of an I-95 derby. Jacksonville is very different from Fort Lauderdale. When I was there, I enjoyed my time there, but Jacksonville is such a welcoming city. The city is really getting behind the team. Everywhere I go, everyone is talking about us. The Armada seems like it is going to be a really big thing for Jacksonville. I am so happy to be a part of this. With an owner like Mark (Frisch), the coaches and the staff here, I am really enjoying it. What do you think about the support for the club’s first match? It was great for me personally because playing in front of a group of fans that are passionate is something that I have become accustomed to after playing in England. Jacksonville’s soccer fans really want to see their team do well and want to see good soccer. I know that I enjoyed myself and all the rest of the guys did. It was a really amazing event. You really seem to connect with some of the players on the Armada FC very fast. What is it about these players that makes you work so well together? I think it is down to the family environment that we have created here at the Armada FC. I have been at clubs before where you don’t get a hello

2.28.2015 Match day

in the morning, and you feel like you are around strangers most of the time. The coaches have really pushed to install a family environment, and there is love and care for each other. We all really want each other to do well, and it shows when we go into work every day. There really is no “I” in this team. It is something that I have really enjoyed. For only being here for two months now, this club is just somewhere that I want to be. What do you want to see from these Jacksonville fans? I am expecting to see a crowded stadium every game really wanting to watch the boys play. After that first performance, we really put our hearts out there and all those fans stayed around afterwards to thank and congratulate us. It was great seeing people out all weekend wearing their scarves and talking to us. What is your favorite part of Jacksonville so far? Actually, I haven’t had time to go out much. I have never been at a club that trains this hard on a day-to-day basis. So usually if I get the chance to relax, I just chill out. But if I do go out, I like to eat at Black Sheep in Riverside. So, I would have to say, I really like going down to Riverside. If I really want to relax, which I do on quite a regular basis, I will head down to the beach, lay out and take a few selfies. If you were stuck on a desert island what is one thing that you couldn’t live without? Probably music. Personally, I like all kinds of music, but depending on what kind of mood I am in, it varies. Before games, I like to listen to house music. I do occasionally like to listen to classical music. I love to listen to a lot of Bob Marley, especially when I have to take those long trips. So, I would definitely need some music out there with me.

The Fort Lauderdale Strikers enters its fifth season in the North American Soccer League after an impressive 2014 season that ended with a loss to the San Antonio Scorpions in the 2014 NASL Championship Final. Despite going through multiple transformations, the club represents a long legacy of professional soccer in South Florida that reaches back to the early days of American soccer in 1972. With new ownership taking over the team in the 2014 season, the appointment of Marcelo Neveleff as head coach and Brazilian soccer legend Ronaldo making headlines as a part owner, many anxiously await what the 2015 NASL season has in store for South Florida’s original soccer team.

LAST SEASON

Despite finishing fourth in the 2014 NASL spring season, Fort Lauderdale made it into the NASL Championship Final by upsetting top-seed Minnesota United FC at home in the semifinals. Strikers forward Martin Nuñez struck a stoppage-time equalizer to force the match into extra time and eventually a penalty kick shootout, where goalkeeper Kamil Contofalsky came up with two big saves to send the Strikers into the Final. The Strikers entered the final match of the 2014 NASL season on an eightgame unbeaten streak (4W-4T-0L), stretching all the way back to September. The team scored 12 goals and conceded eight during the unbeaten streak. In a dazzling Championship Final, the Strikers’ strong defensive effort was not enough to stifle San Antonio’s attacking lineup. Midfielder Walter Ramirez scored his first goal of the season, allowing the Strikers to pull to within one in the 79th minute. However, the despite the team’s furious attack at the end, it wasn’t enough, and the Scorpions took the championship, 2-1.

Behind the Broadcast

Fans tuning in to CW17 this season to catch Armada FC matches will most likely be focused on the team’s play. But what happens behind the scenes to deliver a match to homes around Northeast Florida is nothing short of an impressive undertaking. Armada FC broadcast partner Gemstone Media put their expertise to the test on Feb. 7 when they worked alongside CW17 to broadcast the Armada FC’s inaugural win at EverBank Field. From the broadcast booth where Cole Pepper and Mauricio Ruiz called the play-by-play, to the camera operators around the stadium, down to the broadcast truck outside the front gates, the whole operation took careful coordination and planning to execute effectively. “It takes a lot of coordination and a lot of professionals that can make adjustments on the fly,” Pepper said. “Having all of those different ingredients come together the way they did was terrific. I think the broadcast was kind of a microcosm of the game. Yes, it can be better, but for a first time out, it was really a terrific start.” Everyone from the production assistants, engineers, tape operators and replay coordinators work tediously to ensure the fans at home get the best experience possible and catch every exciting moment of the match. The production of the first match required precise timing from the entire unit. For all intents and purposes, the first broadcast was a resounding success. Gemstone and CW17 will continue to produce all of the Armada FC’s home and away matches for the entire 2015 inaugural season. 38
