NOTE B
ringing beauty back, in this month’s edition read about Nanie Dau and her endeavours to become a model. Jaime the Hooper Centre Pharmacies in-house makeup artist shows us a quick six-step makeup look perfect for those fresh autumn days and quirky hair stylist Georgi gave us the low down on everything you can (and need) to know about dreadlocks. The boys with biceps shared some interesting fat-loss techniques and whether cardio or strength is the best method. We had a chat with our next Chronicle Club guest, the gorgeous Matt Wright and he really is the Outback Wrangler. Don’t miss our Style Survey either on page 17 and 18 for a chance to win a Holiday! Also in this edition, read about Toowoomba’s top gardeners’ water-saving tips and tricks, although there has been some gracious rain over the past month we’re still not in the clear. Not only have we got the best French onion soup recipe you can try yourself, but we’ve also gone to the Downs Hotel to taste their delicious menu, but don’t just take our word for it, try it yourself! Our artist this month is the wonderful mural painter Karri Mcpherson and she tells all, from where she gets her inspiration to how she plans her pieces. In our travel section, get some travel inspiration with our articles on travelling solo, and some nifty packing hacks that you wouldn’t normally think of. Lastly, we welcome our new editor in chief the beautiful Ally Martell. Our best, The Style team

One final chance to make it Toowoomba’s Nanie Dou listened to the strangers, followed a thought, which became a passion and is now walking on runways across Australia.
N
yanyuob (Nanie) Dau started life in war-torn South Sudan, her family fleeing to Egypt before eventually receiving visas and arriving in Toowoomba to begin a safe and certain life. Today, Nanie is a model, having worked Melbourne Fashion Week, Melbourne Cup and even a segment for Studio 10, but it wasn’t as smooth sailing as you might think. Throughout high school, Nanie found herself drawn to sports. “High school was all about playing sports and getting knocked around. “Basketball, soccer, futsal, I’d play anything,” Nanie said. It was in her late teens when Nanie started receiving compliments most people would take as a joke if told them. The 21-year-old started being told by friends, retail assistants and even strangers that she should start modelling. “Growing up I was really into sport and so I didn’t really care about a lot of the other stuff, girly stuff. “So, when I got compliments like ‘You should model,’ ‘You should consider modelling,’ I would laugh and say, ‘Nah, get out of here!’” Eventually, Nanie decided to attempt to persue a career in the industry. “At the start of last year, I decided to give it a go, I went into a lot of agencies here in Queensland, it really wasn’t a great experience,” Nanie said. Visiting a multitude of agencies from Toowoomba, Brisbane to the Gold Coast, Nanie hit a wall when one agency had the audacity to tell her that she couldn’t model with them because she was black. “I went into one agency and they said there’s too many of them,” Nanie said.
“They literally said it to my face ‘there’s too many of them,’ too many of my skin colour.” NANIE DAU
“To some people it might seem like a blessing. “But, they literally said it to my face ‘there’s too many of them,’ too many of my skin colour.” Nanie returned to Toowoomba and continued at her current job as a beef-slicer at one of the region’s abattoirs as well as continuing a degree at university. “I gave up, I gave up for a few months and I thought, yeah if there’s too many of my skin colour there’s no point. “Until I saw a comp online … this would be my last attempt,” Nanie said. An agency based in Melbourne was advertising for unsigned

models, so Nanie took the plunge. There were hundreds of entries into the model search. Shortly after the competition had closed Nanie got the call most girls would only dream of. “They told me I got it. “One of six from all over Australia,” Nanie said. In early 2019, Nanie flew to Melbourne and signed a three-year contract with Bella Management, an agency with names such as Gabby Epstein, Hayley Hasselhoff and Robyn Lawley. With such an opportunity, Nanie put her degree on hold, quit her position at the abattoir and focused herself on modelling. Nanie sees herself as a role-model in some respects, being someone girls will see on runways and magazines and look up to as she strays from the typical skin and bones type model. “I’m not skin and bones, I like having a bit of muscle,” she says. Asked what Nanie’s dream modelling gig would be, she promptly answered with Adidas. “Adidas has always been my favourite, regardless, I’d like to be a fitness model,” Nanie says. As for right now, Nanie has a tentative itinerary. “I have it planned out; I want to suss out overseas and I want my portfolio built so when the big events like London and Paris fashion week come around, I’ll have a chance.” With Bella Management having sister agencies overseas (and all things run smoothly) there are endless opportunities and possibilities for Nanie. “I thought about it, modelling wouldn’t be bad, for the time being I’ve got three years, I’ll try my hardest and if it doesn’t work out I can always go back to uni.”

A love of adventure, animals and adrenaline has been the driving force behind the career of Australia’s Outback Wrangler Matt Wright, who visits Toowoomba on Friday, March 20, for an exclusive The Chronicle Club event
I look back at my childhood and yes, we were a bit more outthere with wild animals, but the skills and everything that you learn at that age (if you’re left and allowed to) is invaluable for the rest of your life. When handling the snakes as a kid, there was a bit of luck to not get bitten, but you soon worked it out which is the pointy end of the stick.
T
WHETHER IT HAS BEEN SERVING IN THE ARMY, OWNING AN ADVENTURE TOURISM BUSINESS OR SOARING THROUGH THE AIR AS A CHOPPER PILOT, WHICH OF THE MANY JOBS YOU HAVE DONE HAVE STOOD OUT THE MOST?
he wildlife expert shot to stardom in 2011 when his job as a helicopter pilot and crocodile relocator was beamed to an audience of hundreds of millions across 90 countries on National Geographic. Handling deadly snakes, wrestling with monstrous crocodiles and bringing the audience into the danger zone has been Wright’s mission to raise awareness about the critical need for animal conservation. The laid-back, adrenaline-craving wildlife warrior took the time to discuss how his fascination with wild animals began, his latest work exposing the poaching trade in South Africa and how he’s excited for his next big adventure fatherhood. YOUR WILLINGNESS TO GET UP CLOSE AND IN THE DANGER ZONE WITH CROCODILES, SNAKES AND BEARS SHOWS YOU CLEARLY HAVE A SENSE OF DUTY TO DO YOUR JOB. DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN YOU FIRST DEVELOPED A LOVE FOR WILDLIFE?
I just always had this massive fascination with animals as a kid, rescuing them and checking them out, it’s something that has never went away. 08
TOOWOOMBA STYLE, Friday, March 6, 2020
The most rewarding stuff that I’ve done in my career has been working with different wildlife around the world, whether it was tracking bears or wolves in Canada or catching moving elephants in South East Asia and Borneo. Coming out of that environment knowing that you’re on a mission, you’re doing something with purpose. You’re not just in a job, earning and churning to make the next stack to buy the next car, the next house, the next something for yourself. What you’re actually doing is preserving the world. It’s preserving our wildlife, our environment. between Kaia and I. Kaia’s the academic one and I’m more the practical one, so we will make a good team raising a little one. YOU HAVE DETAILED THAT YOUR LOVE AND FASCINATION WITH ANIMALS BEGAN FROM A YOUNG AGE. DO YOU FEEL AS THOUGH THAT SENSE OF ADVENTURE AND UNDERSTANDING ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT WILL BE PASSED DOWN TO YOUR CHILD? WAS THE MOST SHOCKING REVELATIONS IN YOUR EXPERIENCES BEING ON THE FRONTLINE?
The worst reality check was coming across two rhinos that had been poached just a few days prior to us getting there. In that same area, which was about the size of a football field, there were a dozen rhino carcasses. It’s out of control. It’s madness and just comes down to human greed and human negligence. The documentary highlights an important message we need to get out into the general population. DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOUR PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE DEALING WITH WILD ANIMALS AND MANOEUVRING HELICOPTERS AT BREAKNECK SPEEDS HAS PREPARED YOU FOR PARENTHOOD?
Everyone tells you life’s going change pretty damn quickly, so we will have to wait and see. I think the kid’s going to be strapped on the side of me and we’re going to continue doing what we do and he’s going learn everything V1 - TCHE01Z01ST
It’s not just a lesson I want my child to learn, I think it’s important for all kids to know. It’s the message we try and get across through the shows whether it’s the Outback Wrangler or Save This Rhino is to protect and look after the environment and our world. What I can teach my kids is to look after what we have and to show appreciation for the connection that you can have with wildlife. YOU AND YOUR WIFE LIVE ON A PROPERTY IN THE NORTHERN TERRITORY COMPLETE WITH A ONE-TONNE PET CROC. DO YOU THINK SNAKES, CROCS AND THE WILD WILL ALWAYS BE A PART OF YOUR LIFE?
The snakes and the crocs aren’t so much high adrenaline anymore, it’s just a way of life these days. I’ll still work with the wildlife, but for me it has always been asking myself, “what’s the next excitement? What’s the next adventure?” Now my next adventure in life is bringing up a beautiful family with my beautiful wife. TOOWOOMBA STYLE, Friday, March 6, 2020

The ‘apple’ or ‘inverted pyramid’ body shape means you have wide shoulders and narrow hips, so here’s how to make the best of both assets
THIS MONTH: THE APPLE
W
hile more commonly known as the inverted pyramid, this body shape is rarely that extreme – and hence, the ‘apple’ is probably a better-suited name. Many women with this figure have a background in butterfly swimming, but there are also many others where it is simply their natural curve. Essentially, the apple means you have shoulders that are wider

than your hips and rear. Some females with this shape also have an ample bosom, while for others the width is exclusively from the shoulders or just narrow hips. However much some women may bemoan a small rear or straight hips, this shape is incredibly versatile. You can make your hips seem more prominent and balance your figure by wearing hip-hugging jeans and pants. Vertical stripes are also wonderful for this, with the added benefit of making your legs look longer – like those the model wears on the opposite page. Pockets in your bottomwear and jackets – like the model at left – can add the illusion of width around the hips as well. Flared pant legs or balloon pants are perfect for your body shape too. This effect can also be achieved by wearing chunky bracelets and bangles, and using handbags rather than shoulder bags. For shirts and tops, it depends on whether you want to hide your shoulders or flaunt them. Off-the-shoulder tops are a beautiful way to show them off, as there is enough coverage that your shape remains balanced. Sleeveless dresses with flared skirts and a V-neck are equally ideal for this purpose, while you’ll probably want to stay away from spaghetti straps.

The ‘peplum’ style shirt is ideal for the apple body shape, as the flare around the waist will add volume to the hips, while full or three-quarter sleeves are the way to go. Any shirt with a loose-fit bottom or embellishment around the lower half is fantastic for this figure. In regard to necklines, pick V-neck and perhaps scoop-neck on occasion; these necks are great for accentuating the curves of your bust as well. For outerwear, you’ll want hemlines that finish around the hips or upper thigh. Vests, coats and jackets are best for this, but a poncho will be your ‘power piece’. Finally, as a general rule you’ll want to avoid clothing pieces with structured waists, belts, and halter-necks. NEXT MONTH: THE OVAL

Low fat or low carbs for weight loss? BY GINA HORN – DIETITIAN
W
hen it comes to losing weight, there are hundreds of claims out there, but low-fat and low-carbohydrate diets seem to always take reign. Are you on team low-fat? Or low-carb all the way, like the ketogenic diet? A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association looked at the effects of a healthy low-fat diet vs. a healthy low-carbohydrate diet on weight change after 12 months in more than 600 healthy adults. Surprisingly, no significant difference in weight loss was found between the two diets (-5.3kg on the low-fat diet and -6kg on the low-carbohydrate diet), however, neither diet was excessively strict after the first two months. Both groups were instructed to eat lots of vegetables and protein, while limiting their intake of added sugar and refined carbs (which studies have increasingly tied to a variety of negative health outcomes).
Due to no kJ/ calorie limit being set, participants were not required to count calories or energy intake, and instead were taught about mindful eating, and eating to satiety. The researchers discovered the participants ate around 500 calories (2000 kJ) less, despite having no energy limits on their diets. So, what does this tell us? It signifies there is no diet for weight loss that will work for EVERY person, and instead we are better off choosing an eating style that fits our food preferences, health goals, lifestyle, and most importantly, one we can sustain. So, if low-fat works for you, try that. If low-carb is your preference, that’s fine too. Or maybe you prefer a different dietary approach that works for your personal requirements, you don’t necessarily have to restrict to improve your health outcomes.

beauty
Don’t dread it BY KATHERINE SAMPSON
G
eorgi Kuehne has been a beauty therapist for twenty years, and in that time has seen and learnt a lot about the industry. Georgi is not a ‘day spa’ kind of person, preferring the alternative beauty niche. With this in mind, Georgi had her own hair dreadlocked and liked it so much she wanted to learn the skill. She began classes in Byron Bay to become a qualified ‘loctician’ – not a title you hear every day. “My long-term interest in beauty and hair meant that I already knew how to do hair wraps, and more recently also learnt how to create box and Dutch braids,” Georgi says. “For dreadlocking I use an ‘all natural’ method using a crochet hook. “If the client wants to extend the length of their hair, they can choose either human or synthetic hair to create their dread extensions as you lose a lot of length when you get your hair dreadlocked. Georgi wanted to be able to do something different and offer an alternative to the traditional beauty methods, her vision being to blend the two styles (regular with contemporary). “Everyone defines what is beautiful in their own unique way, and I want to be able to cater for everyone,” Georgi says.
The wonderful thing about dreadlocks is the ability to do something different. You can create new dreads, extend preexisting dreads, extend short hair with longer dreads, or add different colours, beautiful wraps, beads and even incorporate dread jewellery, Georgi told Style Magazine. “Although there are no official figures, my experience suggests that dreadlocks are becoming more popular as employers and society as a whole becomes more accepting of different life choices,” Georgie says. “I have had dreads a few times during my life and the beauty of dreads is that they can be brushed out, so with a little patience the dreads can be removed without having to cut your hair, should you not want them anymore. “Alternatively, you can cut them off and reattach them later.” There is a stigma and misconception regarding dreads, being that they are dirty and that you can’t wash your hair when, in fact, you can wash your hair and perform a nice deep clean of your dreads using apple cider vinegar. There are also many different dread-care products out there; you only have to look. So, if you’re looking to start or continue your dreadlock journey, find a loctician to get your dread on.

Surprise ingredient for glowing skin Vogue Australia make-up artist Nadine Monley says for dewy, radiant skin, you need to apply oils rather strip them away
U
sing oil to clean your skin may seem counterintuitive at first, especially if you’re in the habit of scrubbing your face until it’s squeaky clean. But, using oils to gently wipe away the day (rather than overcleansing with soaps and harsher cleansers) is the secret to skin that is dewy and radiant rather than dry and imbalanced, says veteran make-up artist Nadine Monley. “I’ve seen first-hand the immediate benefits of using oils to cleanse skin — both on myself and others,” Nadine says. “Oils pick up dirt and make-up while nourishing the skin flora. “They are not only extremely gentle on your skin for taking off all your make-up, but also leave you feeling hydrated and glowing like you have walked straight out of a facial. “Most people tend to strip their skin of their natural oils when they use harsh cleansers, which contributes to skin irritation, sensitivity and oily skin (the skin over produces sebum when it’s
trying to compensate for the lack of natural oils).” Nadine is also a fan of massaging oil into the skin before applying foundation – and even adding a drop or two of essential oil to her foundation. “I have done this since the start of my career,” she says. “I wanted to explore the effects oils have on the skin when mixed with foundation, and I noticed an instant dewy glow and improvement in skin texture. “You get this beautiful silky texture that makes your complexion look plumped and completely flawless.” Nadine not only uses a little oil mixed into her foundation; she also preps the skin with oils. To prep your skin with oil before foundation, she recommends spending a little time massaging it into the skin. “It will stimulate your complexion, leaving you with a glow even before you apply the foundation,” she says. “With this technique I use about a drop or two; you don’t want to use too much because your skin will be too oily. If, after you do this, you find your skin needs a little more, just add a little over the top of your foundation. “I love doing this because your foundation soaks into your skin instead of sitting on top of your skin like a mask,” Nadine says.

Powder contouring THE BASICS BY JAIME PROUTEN – MAKEUP ARTIST @JAIMEKATEMUA
F
or long or oval-shaped faces you should focus on contouring the chin and forehead rather than the cheek bones. Still give your cheek bones some definition to lift the face. Remember, all face shapes are beautiful and unique! While contouring can help you embrace your natural face shape, remember to appreciate your own individuality.
Step 1
1
Start with your base already applied, including primer, foundation, concealer and powder.
Step 2
Dip your contour brush into your chosen shade, normally two shades darker than your skin tone (either matt bronzer or contour shade) then dust lightly on the back of your hand so it doesn’t look too heavy handed once applied. Always go slow then build it up if needed. Follow your tragus towards the corner of your lip but not quite reaching the lip.
Step 3
Blend out your contour with a multi-colour bronzer to soften the contour for a more natural
look.
2
3
Step 4
Add blush to only the apples of the cheeks using a complementing tone to yours – e.g. tanned skin go with either a plum, deep pink or tangerine, pale skin go with soft pinks or light corals. Smiling helps to bring the apples of your cheeks out.
Step 5
Using a fan brush, dip into desired highlight shade and sweep the top of your cheekbones and brows and underneath the brow tail. Areas such as the top lip, centre of nose and the forehead can be highlighted also if you want to bring them out with the cheek bones.

Fall in love with autumn beauty and hair T
he fashion week shows have come and gone, and now the beauty gurus have decided what this means for autumn trends in hair and makeup. The results are an eclectic range, from bold statements that can’t help but be noticed, to more muted styles that flatter the face.
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY Bold and bright seems to be a theme for autumn, but if that’s not to your style, never fear. Makeup artist Pat McGrath for Tommy Hilfiger at London Fashion Week gave models a natural, pared down look. The trick, he told online beauty magazine Allure, is to mix primer with your foundation for a sheer look and glowing skin. For those who prefer to make heads turn, rhinestones around
the cheekbones and eyes are set to be popular this season, as well as the ‘punk eyeshadow’ look – which is basically a wide coverage of bright eyeshadow, as per the image above left.
HAIR Once again, it’s an eclectic range of styles that are predicted to be popular. Vibrant hairclips, clip-in hair extensions in bright colours, and solitary streaks of silver and pastels are within the more out-there styles for hair. The bob is also making a comeback, either as an ear-length, straight lob, or jaw-length with lots of added texture. For colours, it’s silver grey and a red, so deep it’s almost brunette, that will keep your hair on-trend.

Strength or cardio for fat loss The short answer is to incorporate strength and cardio into your training plan and to also follow a balanced diet, but what does that mean? BY BEN LOXLEY AND RYAN O’GRADY PERSONAL TRAINERS AND STYLE COLUMNISTS YOU NEED TO BE STRONG Your muscles do one of two things; they either shrink, or they grow. Now, before I elaborate (and this is for the ladies) when I say grow, I do NOT mean that you will look like Arnold Schwarzenegger when your muscles grow – quite the contrary actually. Any female that strength trains will tell you exactly how hard it is to gain ANY muscle at all, they have to work their butt off for it! Females are hormonally NOT set up to gain huge amounts of muscle – so ladies, do not worry! SO, HOW DO MUSCLES SHRINK OR GROW? From the age of about 30 years young, when you do not strengthen your muscles they shrink, this means they waste away – simple as that. What is worse is that they can waste at the rate of up to 0.5kg / year. That’s 5kgs of meat (muscle) that can actually leave your body every 10 years. Have you ever held 5kg of raw steak and seen how much that is? It’s alarming. When you strengthen your muscles, your body turns into a fatburning machine. DO I WALK OR RUN TO BURN FAT? Interestingly enough, the topic in more than 95 per cent of

TRAINING TIPS 1. Always keep in mind that lower intensity means that you need to exercise for a longer duration. 2. As you increase the intensity (effort you put in) you need to adequately fuel your body. More intensity means more fuel burned. If you need an extra kick in your workout, check out @benloxley_coach or @ryanog_coach on Instagram.

situations extends back to how to “lose the beer gut”, “get rid of that roll over the jeans” or “reduce those chunky legs”. Basically people are looking to lose body fat and lose it fast. Popular exercise wall charts will have us understand that if we are exercising at lower heart rates and lower levels of intensity that we are just simply melting fat away. Similarly, as our exercise level of intensity increases, so too does our cardiovascular demand and consequently our fitness increases. While this theory is in some ways correct, it also fails to give an understanding as to the process that occurs. To put it very simply, while you are exercising, your fuel source will be from fat and carbohydrate stores. When you are walking, the percentage of fat burned is proportionally (as opposed to the fuel you burn from carbohydrates) greater. However, although you are burning a greater percentage of fat as a fuel source (as opposed to carbohydrates), the total amount of fat burned may actually be less (as a total amount), due to the amount of total calories burned.

Getting to know...
The pros and cons of the Keto diet
Julianne McEwen, clinical nurse manager in oncology at St Andrew’s Hospital
I
t was the fad diet everyone was into for 2018, 2019... well, it doesn’t seem to be disappearing anytime soon. ‘Going Keto’ basically means cutting all carbohydrates from your diet – including carbs that everyone is familiar with, like pasta and bread, to ones that might surprise, like fruit. However, is it the right diet for you?
What do you do at St Andrews? I manage the oncology unit and work with a wonderful team to provide care and services for cancer patients, and those suffering from other conditions like auto-immune diseases, blood disorders etc. What is your favourite thing about your job? Working with, and providing great care to our cancer patients, and hopefully making a difficult and challenging time a little bit easier for them. I find my role very rewarding and feel privileged to provide support and care to patients diagnosed with cancer and their families. Why is St Andrews a great place to work? My first experience of St Andrew’s Hospital was close to 40 years ago when I came to visit a great aunt who had just had surgery here. I still remember that day and thinking what a lovely place it would be to work and, as a child from a little country town, was quite in awe – even though at that age I had no idea what career path I would take. Fast forward a few years and I have now worked at St Andrews for almost 19 years. I still thoroughly enjoy my position and coming to work at St Andrews and believe that says a lot about the hospital as well.
THE GOOD Because you’re starving your body of a food group that most often is converted to fat stores, your body will consume said stores – meaning you’ll lose weight reasonably quickly. For some, banning all carbs comes easily as well, and preparing keto food isn’t too complicated. THE BAD Food groups are there for a reason, and the human body isn’t made to go utterly carbfree for extended periods of time without health being affected. Reducing carbs instead of omitting them entirely from your diet is the safest and healthiest way to ‘go Keto’.

TOUCHING BASE WITH GOLDCOAST TITANS TOUCH FOOTBALL PLAYER
GEORGINA RACKMANN
SCOOP
G
eorgina Rackemann is one touch footy girl with a serious talent. Ever since she was little she has always played sports, with her main disciplines being touch football, netball and swimming; even for a few years after she finished high school she competed in Rugby Seven’s. It was years in the making for Georgina to reach where she is today. “Here in Toowoomba, I play for Saints Touch Club,” she says. “I also play for UQ Rebels in the Brisbane Metro Cup Comp, and in the NRL Touch Premiership I play for the Gold Coast Titans.” Georgina has even represented Queensland for the State of Origin and has competed for Australia in the Youth Trans-Tasman Touch Football Series. “My highest achievement is making the Australian open-mixed squad and representing Australia at the Youth Trans-Tasman Series in 2015,” Georgina says. She has been lucky enough not to pick up any serious injuries, but this doesn’t mean she doesn’t put her whole body on the line. “Touch is a game that is very unpredictable and it’s constantly changing. “There are so many different aspects and people bring unique skills to the sport. “I’ve actually been very lucky to avoid any serious injuries ‘touch wood’, just a few niggles here and there, but nothing to put me out of the sport for too long,” Georgina says. Touch football isn’t a seasonal sport either, which means Georgina finds herself training all year round to keep in peak condition. “I need to be able to balance my strength, endurance, speed and
agility training. “Leading into a carnival, I tend to start with more endurancebased training, steadily shortening the distance and increasing the intensity as I go, eventually my focus is on repetitive speed, agility and change of direction movements. Georgina likes to maintain her strength training throughout the year and uses the local gym Complete Body Toowoomba to achieve that. She’s also a high school teacher and says her goals are to educate, inspire and encourage young people to be their healthiest, happiest and the best versions of themselves. On the field, Georgina hopes to continue competing at a high level and one day represent Australia again, but at the World Cup.

Celebrating learning and life Catholic school communities are places where families and staff share the incredibly important responsibility of supporting the vast potential of every student. All 31 Catholic system schools, located in Toowoomba, the Darling Downs and South West Queensland region share the challenging mission to be exemplary places of learning and faith where all students experience academic success within a distinctive Catholic environment. There are many reasons why students succeed in our schools but the most important of these is our staff. After the family the teacher is the most influential person in the lives of students whilst they are at school. Our staff fully appreciate the life-changing power of education and have a passion for learning. A vibrant and personalised approach to learning challenges students to think deeply about the world and their place in it. Our staff act in partnership with parents to bring out the best in every student. Welcoming parents as active partners in the education process is an essential ingredient to success at school. Parents are uniquely positioned to help their child develop a positive disposition towards school where they feel secure, where they are known and valued and where they can learn and achieve successfully. The partnership between parent, student and teacher is crucial to 13 years of successful schooling. I thank all families who are sharing in this journey with us and extend an invitation to all to experience the positive difference our schools are making in the lives of students. A Catholic education is inclusive, affordable and open to all. Teaching with us If you are a teacher who thrives on being the best at what you do and seeing students succeed beyond their expectations, you may be interested in working for Toowoomba Catholic Schools. Eleven of our schools are classified as rural or remote. Generous incentive packages are available to teachers in these schools. As a teacher in one of these schools you will be a welcome and respected member of a vibrant community and enjoy many unique and enriching social, cultural and sporting experiences and events. If you are looking for career opportunities and personal and professional growth, teaching in a rural or remote school could provide the ideal environment to kickstart or hasten your career aspirations. Learn quickly, develop your skills, and see your career enriched through a repertoire of diverse experiences. Toowoomba Catholic Schools welcomes enquiries from graduates, highly qualified, principled and motivated educators seeking employment in a professional and progressive faith-based organization. stablished in 1942, Darling Downs Christian School is a coeducational school providing quality Christian education from Kindergarten to Year 12. An intimate-size school fostering a ‘whole person’ approach to learning, the school is founded on Biblical principles and values. Welcoming students from many different denominational and cultural backgrounds, the school is set on a beautiful semirural campus, in the growing Toowoomba suburb of Glenvale. The curriculum not only focuses on the intellectual but also the spiritual, physical, social and emotional dimensions of our students. The whole person approach is expressed in special character initiatives such as a spiritual development curriculum, service opportunities and learning outside the classroom. This year marks a new chapter in the history of the school, with the completion of a new secondary school building. The school warmly invites you to attend the annual Pink Fig Market on Sunday, April 26, and join a campus tour and view the new facility. Meet the leaders of St Mary’s College Twenty excited young men have taken the opportunity to represent St Mary’s College in leadership roles this year.
T
he school’s principal, Mr Michael Newman, is proud of the fine young men who have taken the leadership positions in their stride and accepted the responsibility of ensuring that the spirit and direction of the College is maintained and strengthened throughout 2020. “The St Mary’s College primary and secondary school leaders are highly involved in the school community that is supporting them to grow into young men of faith, integrity, action and excellence,” Mr Newman said. “Each of the boys have great values, conduct themselves to a very high standard and embrace the school motto ‘Conanti Corona’ every day; which means strive for the crown,” he said. Mr Newman further commented that the student leadership team is expected to be a voice for the other students in the College, which is an important concept in education. “The leaders empower students and enable them, in collaboration, to achieve what they desire. “Forming part of the Student Representative Council, the leadership team also provide staff feedback in relation to teaching practices and communication methods,” he said College Captain Alastair Doljanin has attended St Mary’s College since Year 6 and has admired the College leaders before him. “As College Captain, I aim to be a role model and a friend to the other students attending St Mary’s College,” Alastair said. “I strive to connect with my peers, listen to them and present

their concerns and ideas to the Executive Leadership team in an effort to work collaboratively with them to achieve positive outcomes.” Primary leader Aloysious Va’a said he enjoys making positive friendships with the boys at St Mary’s College and supporting the staff. Primary academic leader Charlie Bowen says being a leader at St Mary’s College means being part of an excellent school and knowing there is always someone to look out for you. There are six primary leaders and 14 secondary leaders who each lead a portfolio within the College – academic, social, identity, cultural and sport. This student leadership team is looking forward to a prosperous year ahead.

Embrace curiosity at this art festival Better than ever: Toowoomba Show
I
t’s back and it’s better than ever! That’s right – we’re referring to the Heritage Bank Toowoomba Royal Show, a highlight of the Garden City’s regional calendar. Held from Thursday, March 26, to Saturday, March 28, this year’s show will include all the usual fan-favourites, like sideshow alley, livestock and handicraft competitions, and that glorious once-ayear food the kids have been waiting for. However, there will also be some exciting new additions, such as country singer Adam Harvey performing each evening in the main arena alongside bush poetry by the renowned Gary Fogarty, dancing and the Outback Riders. After almost 10 years away, both bull riding and monster trucks will also return each night, and there will be new exhibitions in the shape of Dinkum Dinosaurs and Luke’s Reptile Kingdom. Tickets are available to purchase online now, and once again there are some great prepaid ride deals and bundles for any budget. To grab your entry or find out more, visit toowoombashow.com.au
L
ast year, Toowoomba welcomed a fun new event in the form of Curious Arts Festival. A raging success means the festival is back for 2020, and will continue to be an annual event each March at the Empire Theatre. This year, the festival is being held from Friday, March 20, to Sunday, March 22, and will allow visitors to dive into the curious. The Garden of Curiosity will be back; the part installation, part pop-up performance, part creative playground will be open from 5pm on the Friday and Saturday with gold coin donation entry. Guests can also get their bush-dancing boots on and move along to The Smashing Bumpkins as they create funky tunes from popular music riffs, or just relax and enjoy at The Oasis with free events. From street performers to short films, contemporary dance to chilled-out music, there’s something for everyone. This is just a taste of what’s to come – there will be many more events on during Curious Arts Festival, for young and old and all those in between. For more information, visit curiousfestival.com.au

ould we go so far as claiming pink as the new neutral? In the past, pink was saved for baby girls’ nurseries, little girl’s bedrooms and grandma’s bathroom. Nowadays the right shade of pink can add a sophisticated yet feminine touch to a room. Colour psychology suggests that different colours affect our mood, feelings and behaviour. The colour pink is thought to be calming and associated with feelings of love, romance and kindness – what a great way to influence the mood of your home. The right shade of pink (let’s just say we’re not talking fluoro pink) pairs perfectly with greys and monochrome palates. Most recently, on-trend is mustard, burgundy and dark greens paired with lighter, blush tones of pink. If you’re still not convinced of the power of pink in your home, why not start small with a pink cushion, throw or indoor pot plant (because pink and green is another match made in interiors heaven) instead of your usual go-to neutrals. Soft furnishings like cushions, throws and curtains are a great

Roll up, roll up – it’s Showtime BY ROS BURTON PRINCIPAL – THE REAL ESTATE PEOPLE

ow good are Dagwood Dogs? No need to answer that – they are awesome (albeit pure evil for principals in the real estate industry looking to watch their figure). Nonetheless, I’m going to be unashamedly indulging later this month when the Heritage Bank Toowoomba Royal Show kicks off – running from Thursday, March 26 to Saturday, March 28. I can’t wait. Ever since I was young one, I’ve loved the Show – the colour, the spectacle, the sights and sounds all bring back wonderful memories. But, I’ll be wearing a different hat when I visit this year. I’ll be joining my colleagues from The Real Estate People to man a stall in the Founders Pavilion over the three days. We think it’s a wonderful opportunity to meet show-goers (local and visiting) and introduce ourselves. It’s a chance to discuss the current real estate climate and hear where the community thinks we are tracking in the region.
It will be revealing to learn whether recordlow interest rates are enough for people to now buy property with confidence or is uncertainty in the job market still making potential buyers reluctant to make the jump? It’ll be great to hear the different views and motivations that influence our local house and investment purchases. In the real estate industry, we obviously have our own ideas and predictions of where the market is heading (based on many years’ experience), but it’s vitally important to gauge public opinion and see what the factors driving sentiment are. If you’re coming to the Show, be sure to stop by The Real Estate People display and say hi. We’d love to hear your thoughts on where you think the industry is going in 2020. Maybe we can even share a Dagwood Dog (it’ll be our secret).
At The Real Estate People, we consider our word is our bond and we understand how clear communication and following through on promises is an integral part of good customer service. So, whether you’re buying, renting or selling, call us today or visit our Herries Street office and discover how we can help you sleep easy at night.

Making your home cosy Autumn is officially here, and what better excuse than a change of season to redecorate?
T
he leaves are starting to change colour, the air has that brisk tinge to it, and you feel a sudden urge to sit on the lounge with a blanket and good cup of tea wrapped in your hands. This weather is the perfect reason to give your home a facelift, we at Style believe, and one essential change is to get the lounge room from cool to cosy.
In the past, this is where we’d say to start with a warm colour palette – burnt umber, orange, reds – but for 2020 the Pantone colour of the year is Classic Blue and, strangely enough, it works for those cold mornings too. The trick is to not go overboard – incorporate the colour with vases, lamp shades, cushions, maybe even a floor rug. Then complete the look with warmer neutrals like tan and dusty brown (as in the image at left). Peaceful hues like these actually add to the feeling of cosiness in a room. If this isn’t quite enough, however, adding texture through your decor items and soft furnishings will also make the lounge room warm and inviting. Natural fibres can have this effect as well. Chunky blankets, cane chairs and natural baskets, bare unfinished wood, and raisedpattern vases are all excellent options. Finally, go wild with your soft furnishings. Nothing says ‘cosy’ quite like a pile of different patterned and textured rugs sitting on a chair or coffee table, or a pile of plushy pillows on the lounge setting. Let lots of natural light into the room and, if this isn’t possible, try using ‘warm white’ lighting instead of ‘cool white’ for autumn and winter. Warm white and yellow imitates the sun more closely than cool white, which will help give an illusion of natural warmth and light in the room.

Prepare the garden for autumn frosts It’s now officially autumn, which means the weather is getting colder and the chance of plant-damaging frosts is higher
W
hile frost looks beautiful when the sun is just up and glittering on the icy fronds, it’s hazardous for most gardens. Since plants have such a high water content and water expands when it freezes, frost makes those plant cells explode – leading to mushy or black foliage after it thaws. Garden Australia’s Sophie Thomson says most plants in a garden can come back from frost damage, but it requires proper care. First, don’t prune your plants until the danger of frost is over, or the new growth will also get damage and die – new growth is actually more susceptible to frost. It may look unsightly, but you’re better off leaving the frost-damaged foliage on
the plant for now. The other big tip is being prepared. Some young plants don’t have the fortitude to withstand frosts yet, so they need protection. Sophie says you’ll know there will be a frost when the temperature gets to below five degrees overnight and the evening is clear and still. Cover your plants up at night with old bedsheets or a tarp – even an upside-down pot or plastic bottle can work for seedlings and smaller plants. If it gets cold enough for the ground to start freezing, you can protect your garden by mulching or laying straw around the base of the plants. It’s particularly important to do this for conifers, fruit and strawberries.

Water-saving tips from Toowoomba’s top gardeners
FROM SECRETS OF TOOWOOMBA’S GARDENERS BOOK AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE AT THE CHRONICLE OFFICE
T
he cruel truth of the matter is that most of Toowoomba and Darling Downs region is in drought – and has been for years. So, rather than fight it, we have to work with it. For gardeners, this means creating a drought-resistant garden with fewer thirsty plants. It also means developing watering systems to minimise waste. Some people recycle their grey water, others just use tanks. Water is a huge issue for our awardwinning gardeners, and here they share some of their tips on how to save money on water.
BOB AND VAL FORD JULIE ROGGEVEEN
H
and-hosing is best. I use a soft wand – don’t be tempted to blast the plants on jet settings and do water at the base of the plant only. If frost is forecast don’t water in the evening, as that will only add to the severity of the frost, do water in the morning as it will help to get rid of frost on plants and will help prevent leaves from burning and going black from the frost.
T
ry not to overwater, this encourages surface roots and will in turn leave your garden exposed when rain has taken a holiday. Deep watering once a week promotes deep roots. Dripper hoses work well as little water is lost to evaporation. The top soil will feel dry but the moisture remains down at the roots where it is needed.

e make extensive use of waterwise systems and principles. Grey water recycling, tank water, mulch, specially designed sprinkler system, misters etc. we use minimal town water and recycle 50 to 100 litres per day. We also have a 15,000-litre rainwater tank. Charmaine waters in the mornings and only during the day if it is very hot. She doesn’t water much in the evenings.
LOUISVILLE
recommend drip irrigation, mulch and tank water. Also, try and shape the garden to catch and keep rain run-off. Remember, deciduous trees provide free mulch. Grow shade trees, use some inorganic mulch to let rain through easily, break up organic mulch, and don’t water the lawn. Above all, if possible, grow plants that are waterwise themselves.

REDUCING THE ENERGY WITHIN T
hese days, pretty much everyone is at least aware of the term ‘energy efficiency’ even if they are not fully up to speed on all it means — especially when it comes to designing and building a home. However, we are finding more and more, the people who are approaching us for guidance on building their energy efficient home are not only well versed in the basics, but they are also taking a wider environmental view. Not only are they determined to build a home that consumes the least amount of daily energy to run (as their budget will allow), they are also much more conscious of what ‘it costs the planet’ for their house to be built. The energy consumed in the daily running of your home is referred to as Operation Energy, and there is much that can be done to minimise that usage — from clever building materials and methods, to smart kitchen appliances. As technology expands, there are always more efficient ways found to do things, and we always keep a very close eye on those cost-saving developments, implementing them as they are proven. But, before Operational Energy is considered, there is Embodied Energy. It’s what has already been consumed in creating the products that actually build your home. The steel reinforcing, the concrete, the timber and roofing and the
like. Many people now are wanting to know their house is energy efficient in these areas too, so their impact on the environment is as neutral as possible. We have always minimised our environmental impact by including as much recycled material as we can. Our steel reinforcing is an example. You may recall our previous article (STYLE July 2018), where we outlined our recycled advances into phase change insulation, another aspect of reducing embodied energy. Some products have a very low energy draw in their manufacture, like concrete, but as so much is used in the average house construction, its embodied energy rating is high. To counter this, we have been moving more into geopolymer-type concrete, which is Look for this column much more energy efficient to make, as well in next month’s as being a significantly superior product, with Style... we will several local companies focussing on it for continue digging the future. deeper into what In the world of building homes, these are ‘sustainability’ means exciting and challenging times.

Working on an endless canvas

BY KARRI MCPHERSON - ARTIST
I
started my art journey by painting canvases, however, in the last three years, my practice has expanded to include largescale murals. It sounds cliche, but I’ve been creating for as long as I can remember. When it comes to my career, I have been painting since 2015 which was when I commenced a Bachelor of Creative Arts. Over the years, I’ve completed 20 different wall paintings, including three murals that I painted in the United States last year. When it comes to my artistic style, I’ve primarily explored the triangular motif through visual fractions and tessellations. I started exploring geometric art three years ago. This style was a natural progression for me, and looking back on my work pre-university, I see a lot of correlation between my older works and my newer ones. This year, I’m interested in pushing my practice into a new direction by exploring a more refined style of geometry by using new shapes and patterns to develop my work further. My artistic inspiration unfolds itself through a subconscious amalgamation of ideas, curiosity, vision and inspiration. Before I start painting a mural, I really enjoy spending time with
the location, absorbing the atmosphere and visualising how I could execute my work. I find inspiration in everything, from the shapes within the architecture to the colours in the surrounding natural environment. Developing works on such a huge scale is both incredibly challenging and rewarding. When I was starting out as an artist, I faced a lot of backlash and unfounded remarks from individuals who assumed it was impossible to pursue it as a career. To anyone out there who wants to pursue a career in the arts, just do it! There are plenty of career opportunities out there, you just have to look for them. The world is our oyster, and if you are passionate and willing to work hard, then anything is possible. My ongoing philosophy is, “if someone else can do it, then why can’t I?”.

Effectively use your aircon all year long BY KATHERINE SAMPSON
Y
ou’re going to save fuel by not using the aircon every time you get in the car. But, sometimes you just need that air conditioner to make the drive tolerable. We all know that an Australian essential is airconditioning on a hot day, but we also know it consumes more fuel than you’d care to lose. But, this doesn’t mean you have to switch off come the swelter. You only have to be practical and clever about it. To begin with, if you can park in the shade you should. Every moment the car idles out of the sun, the lower the temperature will be when you eventually get in. If you have parked in the sun, a quick solution is to turn on the A/C and wind all the windows down until the majority of the heat’s gone. Then, set the aircon to recycle and re-use that glorious cool air. Once on the road, there are two aircon settings, recirculated air and outside air flow. Never, and I repeat never, use the outside air flow, this will only suck every ounce of heat-ridden particle into your car. Unless your car is smelling a little stale, or the temperature outside isn’t terrible and you just want that gentle breeze, alternatively windows down would be a good substitute. By recycling the air from inside the car, it can only get cooler and cooler each time, meaning you can keep the aircon on low with the same effect. Don’t rush into it either, start you’re A/C on low and gradually work up, or if low is all you need – then voila! Final note, don’t set your car to arctic, not only will this affect your fuel immensely, but if it’s too hot outside of the car you might pass out with the sudden temperature change when getting out of the car, worst possible outcome. In winter, frost might be a troubling factor you’ll need to deal with. You could dilute some isopropyl or rubbing alcohol in water and spray that on your windscreen, but if it’s a random frost that hits mid June you might not be prepared for that. We also suggest not to just pour hot water onto your windscreen as this might cause further fogging and refreezing. The fastest way to defrost or de-fog your windscreen is to blast the windscreen with hot air, turn on the A/C, crack the windows if you can and turn off inside air circulation. This way, you’re getting the most result in the shortest time, and will be able to turn the aircon off sooner and save faster. We recommend in summer a temperature of 24 degrees Celsius for both your health and economical use, and for winter 22 degrees.

anya Hennessy is one of Toowoomba’s very own claims to fame. The media prompt that Tanya was an overnight internet sensation, but she claims it took a little bit longer. “It took me 15 years to be an overnight sensation,” Tanya says. Known to her Toowoomba ears through her time on Hit100.7fm’s Breakfast show Tanya and Hamish a few years ago, Tanya has since made the move to the big smoke and made the most of every avenue. Her more general claim to Australian-wide (if not international fame) came with her social media accounts on Facebook and YouTube as she posted funny, yet relatable, videos. The multi-talented Tanya even wrote the hilarious book Am I Doing This Right? Life Lessons from the Encyclopaedia Bri-Tanya. Late last year Tanya announced on the national weekend radio show she co-hosted with Dylan and Angus she say’s her first love was radio presenting. “I never thought I would have the life I have and it’s because of radio,” Tanya said concluding that she would be finishing up with the radio program after nine years with the network. “Radio has given me the confidence to do it, I was nothing until I got behind a microphone; I really found who I was and

I found my voice and I’m so thankful,” Tanya said through tears. Tanya continued to say that prospect for work in the States and the opportunity of stand-up comedy and live comedy gigs were on the horizon. Before that though, Tanya was on the Australian reality show I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! which although might not be in her eyes the right title for someone in her position, but a stepping stone and absolute proof of success. The radio host, author, reality TV star and internet sensation had a chat to Style about everything from roughing it in I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! to future aspirations, ambitions and goals.

The Paris Model by Alexandra Joel by Jessica Kramer
A
ustralian author and past editor of the country’s edition of Harper’s Bazaar, Alexandra Joel has a knack for turning sparse historical facts into engaging fiction. Her last book, Rosetta, took the family’s limited knowledge of her maternal great-grandmother and spun it into an interesting story, and now Joel has set her sights on a friend’s relative who spent time in Paris as a model for Christian Dior. The Paris Model follows this relative, Grace Woods, from her humble beginnings on a New South Wales sheep farm at age 12 in 1934, to grown-up Paris mannequin (model) in 1951. Grace grows up under the loving yet strict guidance of her parents, with many expectations that she will marry a certain boy, have a family and be involved in the community just as her mother is. While obedient to these expectations, Grace becomes increasingly unhappy as her marriage falls apart and her career passions lay elsewhere. When she makes a shocking discovery about her heritage, it’s

nh Do is turning his hand at science-fiction for middle grade readers, and the venture is intriguing. In the first book of his latest series for ages 10-14, readers follow teenager Ethan who is getting a brain tumour removed by surgical robot Gemini when a freak bolt of lightning hits. Next thing Ethan knows, he’s a master hacker and technology whiz, able to modify or hack computerised items with just his brain. But with these incredible abilities also comes danger.
the last straw and Grace leaves for Paris to become a Christian Dior mannequin – where she falls in love with Philippe Boyer and gets entangled in his complicated double life. The plot switches frequently between Grace’s younger years near Sydney in the 1930s and her current life in Paris in the 1940s, which takes some getting used to but adds an element of curiosity for the reader. The inspection of life as a woman in this era is intriguing and educational, as is life as a model in a high-end fashion house. However, The Paris Model should be read without the expectation of any surprise reveals, regardless of Grace being described as making ‘a shocking discovery’ in the book synopsis, as all elements are absurdly obvious to everyone except the main character. Whether this is a purposeful narrative tool on the author’s behalf to impress upon the reader that Grace never thinks at all or simply a lack of desire to dedicate to plot twists, remains to be seen. Aside from this aspect, the novel is an intriguing look into history and both Australian and Parisian culture in the past and Grace is both a complex and enjoyable character. The Paris Model by Alexandra Joel is published by HarperCollins Australia. RRP $32.99. Available now.
While the text and images means the reading level would more likely suit 7-10 year-olds instead of middle grade, the content is certainly aimed at the 10-14 age group. Regardless, kids who enjoy superhero stories or computers will love this story; it’s fast-paced and an interesting set-up for the rest of the series with relatable characters. E-boy by Anh Do is published by Allen & Unwin. RRP $14.99. Available from March 2020.

FOOD REVIEW – DOWN’S HOTEL BY KATHERINE SAMPSON
The Down’s Hotel is Toowoomba’s oldest pub and it couldn’t have run as long as it has if it didn’t have good food. Not only were the serving sizes incredibly generous, but the prices were also. It also pays to mention that even though the Down’s Hotel are currently going through some serious renovations, the atmosphere inside the restaurant at both the table and the bar was enjoyable with the bar staff being incredibly bubby and helpful. The Style Team paid the Down’s Hotel a visit for a good old pub feed and were not disappointed. 300G RUMP-STEAK
STEAK SANDWICH
Supplied by Rangers Valley, one of the world’s most respected beef producers we were astounded by the size of the Black Onyx Steak. We sliced into the perfectly grilled cut and were met with a dictionary definition medium-rare inside. The full-of-flavour steak was easy to cut and not chewy at all. topped off with a smooth creamy gravy, with a Smokey touch Sided with the humble rump were some crispy potato chips and the house salad with sweet tomatoes and carrots julienne, a classic combination which did not disappoint. Although the choice of mash and veges were on offer.
If a full steak seems a bit too much, the Down’s Steak Sandwich would be recommended. The sandwich is loaded with a delicious caramelised onion and cheese, lettuce beetroot, tomato, aioli barbecue sauce and of course a well-done juicy rib fillet. Not to mention that you can choose to add bacon. The bread was evenly toasted and still warm to touch as it arrived at our table, knife in the top for our choice of the slice. Again, the meal was paired with their deliciously crispy chips as a side. One thing we wanted to appreciate was the layer order of the sandwich, with the cheese and onion on top of the meat allowing their rich flavour to melt into the fillet.
Beverage selection: Shiraz
FISH & CHIPS
CHICKEN PARMIGIANA
The third plate to grace our table was a Barramundi fillet which came battered, but you have the choice of crumbed or grilled. The fish was battered and cooked evenly. The perfectly thin and crispy layer once cut into revealed the succulent Barra underneath. We can only describe the Barra meat as buttery with a good amount of meaty texture. The soft white flesh flaked with ease as we dug in, and almost forgot that there were the glorious chips and salad on the side. Beverage selection: Sauvignon Blanc
The chicken schnitzel was crumbed and cooked evenly and drizzled in a delicious Napoli sauce and creamy melted cheese. The massive chicken parmi took up over half of the plate, but it wasn’t just crumb. The chicken was cooked through entirely and evenly from the state of the crust. The sauce smooth and creamy with elements like onion shining through creating a variety of textures and flavours. The sauce was well placed so the parmigiana kept it was crispy all over. The well-seasoned chips filled the remainder of the plate along with the house-salad. Beverage selection: Moscato
Beverage selection: Draught Beer

Put Phuket on the bucket list BY KATHERINE SAMPSON

hen you think of travel destinations that is equal part picture perfect and fun to experience it’s harder to imagine than you might think. Karon Beach in Phuket, Thailand, is the first thing that springs to mind when I try to imagine just that. My trip didn’t start of quite as easy as you might think, arriving at Phuket’s International Airport an hour’s drive was estimated to get to Karon Beach. With hope of a bus or discount shuttle eliminated immediately, we took a private driver and managed to arrive before sundown. I would suggest organising any other method of travel when travelling from the Phuket’s airport. We arrived at the hotel and the air was dense and the humidity level was high; thank goodness I have forever straight hair. With a good sleep planned, we went out to a nearby restaurant for tea. Being a very touristy location, we anticipated English signage and local communication not to be an issue... boy was I wrong.

You’ve probably never really thought about it, but other nationalities love to travel too, and Karon Beach seemed to be the destination for Russians. Every menu, and street sign was in Thia, followed by Russian and in the smallest print possible the English translation. It was surreal being in a place where English wasn’t highly considered, but in hindsight an experience I wouldn’t change and would be impossible to find elsewhere. Even the local Phuketiens would laugh and be filled with joy to see an English speaker on their shores. The following day was a day of exploration, walking the main streets, and tasting the foods, entering every novelty shop trying to find something that could be a good keepsake. Visiting the beach was unlike any in Australia, sure the beaches were beautiful, and oddly mostly rubbish free. The water surrounding Phuket is from the Andaman Sea, and there were less than zero waves which made it only more serene.
V1 - TCHE01Z01ST
Coconut trees bordered the beach, and the mountains nearby assured us of a very calming evening. If relaxing on the beach or getting fantastic Thia massages and cheap mani-pedis aren’t your thing, don’t get too worried. Although I didn’t personally experience it I can confirm there are plenty of nightclubs water sports, look outs and tours to do and so much more. One feature in the township of Karon Beach I will never forget, and possibly the only English sign that stood out, was that which read “Tsunami evacuation route (and then an arrow),” and so my fear of tsunami’s and vast water began; but that’s another story.

Travelling solo Visiting new countries alone can be the most exciting
and daunting experience for any globetrotter. There are plenty of advantages of being a solo adventurer, but there is an equal list of disadvantages. We’ve compiled a list of some positives and negatives to travelling solo, but don’t let this sway your decision making in the slightest, you do you and do it well! POSITIVES A popular motive solo traveller’s book their tickets in the first place usually comes down to a hot flight deal, discounted accommodation and other such concessions. When travelling in a group or even in pairs, there can be that delay of “will they or won’t they” commit to travelling. Travelling solo means you can book to your schedule, fit your lifestyle and never argue about where you’re going to go and what you’re going to do. This also means you decide on breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you want to budget the accommodation to afford the feasts and experiences you can, and without a single complaint. You’ll even find yourself making more friends and meeting new people. Without the distraction of a companion you can find friendships in complete strangers from any walk of life. Whether they be other solo travellers or groups in the same tour as you, guests staying in the same hostel or even a bunch of like-minded people you meet at a local bar, you can make friends for the trip, travel buddies for the current destination and even a friend for life.
NEGATIVES Be aware, of who you’re with, where you’re going and your belongings, being alone means you’re more vulnerable and a potential target. This doesn’t mean you are a target; you just have to be cautious, alert and smart. When visiting new locations solo, trusting your gut is sometimes the best solution. Although you might find saving money by travelling solo, the fees can still add up, and add up quickly. When travelling in pairs or groups you’ll find that prices for tours and accommodation are reduced per person, so when you’re alone you’ll notice every cent used – but this just requires attentive budgeting. You will get lonely, but you still might meet new people, friends and even relationships on your endeavours. At some point, you will miss your friends and family from home, some locations are best for groups and others for individual explorers – either way, being able to tell your tales from far away places will make up for their lack of being there at the time.

Packing the unessentials
W
hen you go on a holiday to the Maldives or even just the Gold Coast, you might find yourself packing 101 things for the “just in case” situation. It isn’t until your sandal breaks halfway through a hike or your hair tie snaps at the beach that you just wished you’d packed something for that exact occasion. We asked a heap of lady boss travellers what you wouldn’t normally think of bringing on your holiday, but really should consider. Plastic or zip-lock bags: When it starts raining out of the blue, or you go for a swim by choice, putting those wet clothes back in your suitcase is the perfect recipe for mould. By using a bag you can keep the dry clothes separate.
cooler and hot climates (they’re the piece of stretchy material contestants are given on the hit reality show Survivor). Microfibre towel: The best invention since toaster ovens, these towels can be as big as a regular towel but will only take up the room of a washer. Use it as an extra blanket or as its intended use - a quick-dry towel Deck of cards: You never know where there will be a delay, but by bringing some cards you can play either solo or with others at the airport or in lieu of a cancelled event. Great for rainy days and lazy stays.
Electrical or duct tape: These can fix a world of things at home but by bringing some tape you can fix anything from a busted shoe or camera bag to a tent patch. Antihistamine: You never know what you’re allergic to until it’s too late. Packing a few antihistamines is excellent, especially when you’re visiting new places with different animals, foods and botanicals. Earplugs: Planes, trains and other large transport vessels are prone to noise, so some earplugs will be sure to help on any long-haul trip. You can use them at hostels and guesthouses too. Sink plug: You’re camping and have already gone through your underwear including the three spares; by packing a plug you can turn any sink into a wash bucket and feel clean for the rest of your travels. Nail clippers or file: An uneven or hangnail is debatably the worst thing to put up with, but by packing some nail tools you can save yourself a world of stress. Insect spray: You mightn’t have mosquitoes at your own home, but a lot of tropical locations are hot spots for the itchy insects too. Collapsible funnel: This is more specifically for the Asian destinations; the porcelain toilet bowl is a very western invention. As a female, using the eastern squat toilet without practise or precision can ruin your day, but by packing a funnel you can make sure you stay on target. Coins/shrapnel: On that note, don’t expect to find free public toilets everywhere. Locations from Thailand to Germany have a fee included when needing the loo, whether that be 5 Baht or 1 Euro. Come prepared so you can keep some dignity. Buff: You might not know what a buff is exactly, but you can use it in any situation. High-school sweethearts
B
PHOTOGRAPHY BY: TESSA COX PHOTOGR APHY
randon Kerr and Amber-Rose Riley met at high school in music class, and it didn’t take long before a relationship blossomed. In spring last year, after seven years of dating, Brandon and Amber-Rose pulled off their magical DIY wedding and tied the knot in their own back yard. The pair had been dating a while before Amber-Rose found out she was pregnant, and they had their first son. It was at this time Brandon realised he wanted to marry Amber-Rose. “When I saw how much of a wonderful mother she was to our first son, it was that moment that I knew I was going to marry her,” Brandon says. The proposal took place at a family gathering only a fortnight off the couple’s five-year anniversary. Amber-Rose turned to tend to their three-month-old son, when she turned back Brandon was down on one knee. “Brandon was down on one knee with the most beautiful ring I’d ever seen. He asked me if I’d be his wife,” Amber-Rose said. After crying with happy tears and a squeal of joy, Amber said, “Yes!” The big day went off without a hitch, except of course the actual
marriage of Brandon and Amber-Rose. The theme of the day was simple, yet elegant. They had organised artificial eucalyptus garlands with white roses and tier candles to be everywhere. The yard was also covered with a canopy of fairy lights and completed the day they described as “magical”. “Everything happened to plan, except the rose petals in the aisle which I forgot,” Brandon claimed. “For a day we planned mostly on our own, I was very surprised at how well everyone and my beautiful wife responded on the day.” During the reception, Brandon sang Elvis Presley’s Can’t Help Falling In Love to Amber in front of all their guests. “I couldn’t stop smiling and shed some tears, it was so romantic,” says Amber-Rose. For the future, the Kerr’s have a rain-checked honeymoon as they want their children Ronan and Elijah to be older and hope to buy and renovate their dream home soon.

weddings
Find your seat
A
wedding is an exciting time for everyone, both the wedding party and the guests. But, have you taken into consideration where you will seat everyone at the reception? You’re going to want to sit next to your new hubby or wifey, but you also want to sit next to your favourite cousin, sisters, brothers, parents, friends – this is harder than you initially thought – will you and your partner’s family even get along? We’ve put together some suggestions when it comes to writing out that table plan well in advance of the day (and not the night before). DECIDE ON THE TABLE There are a few shapes you can opt for, the most popular being round, rectangular, oval and square. Your decision might come down to the venue of your wedding, but it also could depend on your guest list. Round tables provide significant leg room, but it normally limits the guest’s communication with their seated neighbour, and someone will have their back to the MC. Long rectangular tables are great for smaller venues as they take up less room with more people. The oval and square tables are variations but follow similar structure rules.
THE WEDDING PARTY A popular trend is to sit the newly weds and their wedding party at a long rectangular table at the head of the reception. This allows all the guests to easily see the bride and groom and rebuts the need to tap their shoulder for a chat, as you can just talk straight over to the table. If you do go for round tables, it’s best to keep the wedding party, bride and groom at the one table, so no favouritism is being had. EVERYONE ELSE You will want your parents and in-laws to sit together, assuming they get along – seated with your siblings and grandparents. If there is the uncomfortable divorced circumstance, you can use that parent to seat more relatives or close friends of that side of the family. Trust your close friends with guests who don’t know many people at a table, and don’t create a singles section, it might sound fun, but it never ends well. Even use the amount of people per table to help you create numbers. The venue will only take 80 guests, now you’ll have to make a list to fit that number and not feel too bad about not inviting second cousin Rachel who you haven’t seen for six years but has been messaging you lately hinting for an invite. KIDS TABLE By dedicating a shorter table you can make sure the flower girls and little ring bearers can colour in, chat about their favourite television show and even be given tot-friendly feasts. NAME CARD A name card will help guests find their spot, you can organise couples to stick together, and give those who need the best view a good spot. This also helps with dietary requirements as the caterers will know exactly where the vegan, vegetarian, and paleotarians are. If you aren’t fussed by seating, then just giving guests their table will be adequate.

CUTTING DOWN INSTEAD OF CUTTING OUT It’s a big ask in our caffeine-addicted society to cut coffee out of your diet altogether, so why not simply cut down? Instead of buying a cuppa each day, swap one or two a week for making an instant coffee in the office. Technically, it’s only about $10 a week that you’re saving, but it all adds up. You can use a similar philosophy with catching up with friends – suggest meeting over a coffee or morning tea instead of a full meal at lunch or dinner. When it comes to clothing, you can cut down on costs by shopping at op-shops while you’re saving or revamp your wardrobe by pairing together different pieces for a whole new look.
Saving money well
CHECK THE BUDGET
Whether it’s for a house deposit, your next holiday, or simply that cute-but-expensive item you’ve had your eye on for ages, saving doesn’t have to be difficult
O
ften, how much you save depends on how much you’re willing to go without. This doesn’t have to be completely glum, however – sometimes a relook at your budget can lead to finding extra funds that can be put aside, or you’ll simply find that some expenses are no longer necessary.
Sitting down and going through your expenses each pay period can actually reveal ‘hidden funds’ that you may end up with after all the bills are paid. Often when we don’t budget, any surplus can disappear into extra meals out or takeaway, or purchasing items we don’t really need. If you budget each pay period, you’ll know how much surplus is available to set aside for your savings. Bonus points if you open a savings account that doesn’t let you withdraw money all the time but has a reasonable interest rate. Many accounts will let you set a goal for saving amount and time frame, and calculate how much you need to put aside each week to make that goal.

y partner and I have two fluffy kids, Thia is a four-yearold Maltese shitzu, the second is Nutley, a cattledogstaffy X who turned three last October. At night time, Thia sleeps in our bed – it usually starts with her at our feet and, as the night goes on, she gets closer and closer to our heads; one of us ends up without a pillow by the morning as she claims it as her own. They get presents for Christmas and birthdays. For Christmas it's a stocking from Kmart with lots of toys and treats. Nutley rips all of Thia’s toys before she can get to them though. For their birthday’s I usually get them doggie cupcakes or doggie ice-cream from the pet store, Nutley is the only one that eats these treats as Thia wants human food.

I’ll often say to her “Go to your dad.” She’ll just mosey on over to him. She has her own little house, with a cushy pillow which she shares affectionately with our cat Coda. When it comes to clothing I think she prefers to be nude, no matter what we put on her she strips off, even in winter! We have tried a super cute hoodie but she won’t have it. It’s a pity, she’d look adorable.

ometimes when we are sick, we hastily google our symptoms and suddenly we’ve convinced ourselves that we have a rare incurable disease. After a freak out we see a doctor and it turns out it’s just a common cold and we vow never to google our symptoms again. The similar often happens when parties separate. Parties google how their property should be divided or what
achievable. Often because they have received “legal advice” from someone who is not a lawyer. In parenting matters, there is no hard and fast rule that a child of any age must live for a week at a time with each parent. Each family is different, and each child is unique and there are many factors to take into consideration. By seeing an experienced lawyer at the start of a separation you can be provided with the right advice at the start to help you reach an arrangement that best suits your unique situation. The same applies to property settlements. The contributions and future need factors for your friend’s case may be completely different to the facts of your case. A property division for a couple who have been together for over 20 years will invariably have a completely different outcome compared to a couple who have been together for only two years.
