Making your home cosy Autumn is officially here, and what better excuse than a change of season to redecorate?

T

he leaves are starting to change colour, the air has that brisk tinge to it, and you feel a sudden urge to sit on the lounge with a blanket and good cup of tea wrapped in your hands. This weather is the perfect reason to give your home a facelift, we at Style believe, and one essential change is to get the lounge room from cool to cosy.

In the past, this is where we’d say to start with a warm colour palette – burnt umber, orange, reds – but for 2020 the Pantone colour of the year is Classic Blue and, strangely enough, it works for those cold mornings too. The trick is to not go overboard – incorporate the colour with vases, lamp shades, cushions, maybe even a floor rug. Then complete the look with warmer neutrals like tan and dusty brown (as in the image at left). Peaceful hues like these actually add to the feeling of cosiness in a room. If this isn’t quite enough, however, adding texture through your decor items and soft furnishings will also make the lounge room warm and inviting. Natural fibres can have this effect as well. Chunky blankets, cane chairs and natural baskets, bare unfinished wood, and raisedpattern vases are all excellent options. Finally, go wild with your soft furnishings. Nothing says ‘cosy’ quite like a pile of different patterned and textured rugs sitting on a chair or coffee table, or a pile of plushy pillows on the lounge setting. Let lots of natural light into the room and, if this isn’t possible, try using ‘warm white’ lighting instead of ‘cool white’ for autumn and winter. Warm white and yellow imitates the sun more closely than cool white, which will help give an illusion of natural warmth and light in the room.
