Cardiology: Interventional Platform & Intensive Care Environment Qualifications Heart disease is among the most common conditions facing our population. Major advancements have been made to aid in early detection and prevention technologies, demanding newer and more comprehensive facilities to accommodate these specialties. We are knowledgeable about the intricacies associated with planning facilities to accommodate advanced imaging, surgery, cardiac rehabilitation and monitoring. We recognize that in order to reduce treatment stress we design spaces that minimize disruption by separating diagnostics, treatment and recovery spaces. Patient spaces that require one-to-one nursing care also need specialized planning and design to ensure care delivery is not hampered by clinicians traveling far distances for supplies and life-saving equipment. A well-designed Intensive Care Unit—be it for adults, children or infants— with optimal sight lines and supply storage within easy reach means more time spent caring for patients.

Patient Experience
“Hearing that your heart may not be working as it should brings stress and unease. Array was selected as part of an integrated team to provide planning and design services for the replacement of Inspira Health’s Woodbury hospital. After selection, Inspira asked Array to lead a rapid assessment phase integrating their strategic plan, financial projections, and operational goals along with site and cost analysis to determine if the replacement hospital should remain on the existing site or move to a new site in the service area. Array used Lean Facilitation to assist the Inspira team and through that process delivered a recommendation for Board approval in less than eight weeks. After determining a new site would best serve the Health System’s goals, Array and the integrated team began our Process-led Lean Design approach to program and plan the new facility. Six visioning sessions were held with staff and community members over three days. Cross functional work sessions were then held with each team to map the current state flows of every department. Armed with a detailed assessment, we worked with the teams to develop the ideal future state and work flows for the new facility. The replacement hospital’s Interventional Platform was designed to include all services - surgery, endoscopy and catheterization lab suites - collocated and sharing staff, pre-op, recovery and PACU. The Sterile Processing Department was designed to have immediate access from the semi-restricted and non-restricted areas to minimize steps and cross traffic of soiled and clean instruments as well as facilitate throughput. Utilizing physical mock-ups, a universal patient-centric, private pre-op and recovery room was designed to meet the needs of different patients and facilitate the use and throughput of the surgical spaces.

Interventional Surgery Platform Within the Hospital’s Surgery Department, separate surgery, endoscopy and catheterization lab suites include siloed perioperative and recovery ares as well as support spaces. Additionally, the Sterile Processing Department was located on a separate floor and supported the surgical suites as well as departments such as LDR and c-section. During the current state, process and experience mapping sessions, it became clear the siloed departments led to inefficiencies and required duplicate support spaces, additional pre-op, recovery and PACU stations as well as staff. The replacement hospital’s Interventional Platform was designed to include all three services collocated and sharing staff, pre-op, recovery and PACU. The Sterile Processing Department was designed to have immediate access from the semi-restricted and non-restricted areas to minimize steps and cross traffic of soiled and clean instruments as well as facilitate throughput.
Smart Technology Advanced smart room technology at Inspira Mullica Hill promotes efficiency and enhances the patient experience. Interactive TVs provided in every patient room share real-time details with the patients care team throughout the patient’s stay. This technology allows patients to send messages to housekeeping, facilities and other members of their care team to create a more responsive and home-like experience. Digital displays outside each patient room alert visitors, housekeeping staff and others of the activity going on inside the room, such as a private consultation between the patient and a doctor, by sharing real-time information. This reduces interruptions and maintains privacy standards. Also incorporated in the design is a “Genius Bar.” This space opens up to where all of the IT staff are located within the hospital. Located in the lobby, this space is easily accessible by patients and families to assist them with personal health technology devices and integration.

“Hybrid Cath Labs can serve patients in an innovative way. Offering the ability to diagnose cardiac conditions and quickly move patients to a recommended surgical procedure is a clear benefit of these facilities. Making sure that everyone on the clinical platform is in sync with the concept is an absolute necessity.” – Lisa Lipschutz, RA, ACHA, EDAC, Lean Green Belt Principal & Practice Leader, Planning PAGE 19
