PUBLISHER’S NOTE

YOUR DAILY ART DOSE

L

ast century, the internationally cultural crowd appreciated Miami, mainly because of its cultural stewards; the Miami Film Festival and Book Fair (1984), the Art Miami Fair (1981), Coconut Grove Arts Festival (1963), the Coral Gables Gallery Night (1980). Next, the New York Times proclaimed to the world that a group of important art collectors; Marty Z. Margulies (1998), and Mera and Don Rubell (1993) were opening warehousemuseums in Wynwood. Moving on, these same folks while traveling to Basel, Switzerland with other Miami collectors; i.e. Norman and Irma Braman, Carlos and Rosa de la Cruz, Dennis and Debra Scholl, to buy important contemporary art for their private collections, were able to influence the Basel Fair in Switzerland to replicate their model and in 2001 Art Basel Miami Beach was born, opening in 2002. Now, with the start of the 21st century, we need to give accolades to our extraordinary institutions; such as Miami Dade College, the Knight Foundation, and Art Basel Miami Beach, and we can not forget our local champions, as represented by Michael Spring and Michael Tilson Thomas. Thanks to insightful institutions and a stellar group of individuals, today Miami is becoming the active, nurturing environment it can be. Although Art Basel Season aka Miami Art Week are brief events, in Miami today, every day is an Arts Day! A place where you can learn, enjoy, broaden your senses and your spirit by attending a

myriad of lectures, vernissages, symposia, panels, cult films, and poetry readings, many of them one-day free events. The challenge is finding where, when, and the details...the information necessary to organize your calendar and your life! This is where Art Circuits, the insiders’ guide, comes in. This guide puts all you need to know regarding culture and the arts in an easy to access format via twitter, facebook page, and our home-page calendar. Museums are key centers for our cultural life, sign online to get their newsletters, and if you are wondering what’s happening at these museums - renown art critic/writer Elisa Turner will inform you in her “ArtCentric” column on page 12. Her interviews of our highly recognized museum directors answer the questions everyone wants to know. While in her article “Urban Canvas”, writer Margery Gordon visited four private major collections open to the public to inquire which South Florida artists they collect and why. Read the answers starting on page 14. Art Circuits brings you the nitty gritty, starting on page 18, timely and well laid out Maps of Miami’s amazing 7 Gallery Walks, where art galleries/spaces are open and free to the public. Art everywhere and Art Circuits will keep you connected, enjoy!

MIAMI:

REVOLVING DOOR OR DOORWAYS TO OPPORTUNITY? While some call the city’s evolving identity a revolving door, museum directors see doorways to robust opportunity when describing their institutions’ identity and goals.

LOWE ART MUSEUM, UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI Dr. Jill Deupi, Beaux Arts Director and Chief Curator

PATRICIA & PHILLIP FROST ART MUSEUM, FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY Dr. Jordana Pomeroy, Director

“With a world-class collection comprising nearly 19,000 objects and spanning some 5,000 years of history, the Lowe is a vital resource in Miami and beyond. We’ll inject our holdings with new relevance by connecting our encyclopedic collection to contemporary art and culture--such as ‘1 + 2: Colección Jumex in Dialogue with the Lowe Art Museum.’

“The original mission of the museum was to educate and expose audiences to art throughout time. We can show a much more encyclopedic view of art history. One of my favorite things is a conversation among artworks sparking new ideas, making connections globally and chronologically. You might have Old Master works next to contemporary art, so that you see a continuity.

“I’m excited by engaging contemporary and emerging artists to create new works in response to our holdings. Harnessing technology to further our mission is another goal: incorporating digital technology in galleries to enhance learning and exploring art made via new technologies. We can engage audiences by creating crowdsourced shows.

“We have now on the radar 20th Century America, 19th Century Europe, and of course Latin America. I’m interested in working with FIU faculty and perhaps other institutions to create collaborations based on their disciplines. For example, some wonderful artists have explored issues pertaining to physics. “I’ve always been interested in university museums because they can be laboratories for exploration that perhaps a larger municipal museum couldn’t. It’s wonderful to be in a stimulating city with a vibrant art community. This part of the country embraces new ideas. There’s an exciting fluidity you wouldn’t necessarily get in a bigger, older art scene.”

“It’s important to me that the Lowe not only reflect Miami’s art scene but also engage with it. This means fostering curatorial practice that engages with contemporary art and culture and partners with individuals and institutions-artistic, educational, or civic-throughout Miami and beyond.”

by ELISA TURNER

BASS MUSEUM OF ART Silvia Karman Cubiñá, Executive Director and Chief Curator

MIAMI DADE COLLEGE MUSEUM OF ART + DESIGN Jeremy Mikolajczak, Executive Director and Chief Curator

“Our mission is to present contemporary art to excite, challenge and educate--and we interpret the definition of contemporary art widely by including design, architecture, fashion as well as contemporary art in all media.

“Our programs must engage students of Miami Dade College and New World School of the Arts and the public. You’ll see more creative partnerships with local and non-local institutions; programs on Design, including functional, experimental, graphic, architecture, fashion; and exhibitions connecting South Florida present and past.

“We’re so lucky to live in Miami now. Our ever-changing city offers big challenges and equally big opportunities! Museums are coming of age in our young city. For the Bass, it is a priority to exhibit artists from Miami. We continually work with artists for individual exhibitions, such as Bert Rodriguez, Frances Trombly, Leyden Rodriguez, Manny Prieres and Hernan Bas; projects in Collins Park with Jim Drain, Agustina Woodgate, Christy Gast and Emmett Moore or group exhibitions, such as GOLD, including Cristina Lei Rodriguez, Martin Oppel, Carlos Betancourt and Patty Hernandez. GOLD travels to Neuberger Museum, so we’re proud that artists from Miami are part of it!

“We plan to exhibit and expand our extensive collection. We’re stewards of one of Miami’s most iconic structures, The Freedom Tower. On the first floor are historical exhibits by artists of Cuban descent. “The museum, with MDC and NWSA, reflects the larger Miami art scene. Our swing/SPACE/miami series supports talented alums who began here before moving on to extensive careers-including William Cordova, Michael Vazquez, Tatiana Vahan, Domingo Castillo, Alma Leiva. Many gaps must be filled before Miami becomes a major player in the art world--but we’re fast on our way. I don’t think you can only talk about art currently produced in Miami without talking about what ‘was’ and how we got to where we are.

“Artistic excellence is essential. I believe museums in Miami do a very good job working with artists here. However, there’s always room for improvement, so we’ll keep working hard at this.” Does the Bass plan increased attention to the Miami art scene? “Yes, is the short answer. In fall 2015, the Bass begins construction of our expansion and we are planning programs for this period, so stay tuned. .

“The history of Miami’s arts community is fascinating. A major initiative supports long-standing artists in the community, including Robert Thiele and recently deceased Robert Huff, both MDC professors in their younger years and pioneers in building the 1970s and 1980s artist community. “Our mission is forever tied to artists and designers who’ve attended MDC or NWSA. We work with artists, designers, collectives and curators--locally or internationally recognized--to adapt and grow with Miami’s vibrant community.”

Collections Make Space to Showcase South Florida Artists The nonprofit spaces contemporary art collectors open to the

public tempt connoisseurs with glimpses of personal predilections and market trends. Renowned for their acumen and foresight, South Florida’s intrepid jetsetters are as selective about acquisitions close to home as at art fairs, galleries and studio visits in far-flung locales.

To debut their latest discoveries, unearth gems from storage and reveal connective tissue, the spaces are re-installed each fall. Works created nearby don’t always fit the marquee shows, but most collections devise other means of exposure for artists reared and educated in the region as well as more recent arrivals.

On the outskirts are self-contained environments for initiatives funded by the de la Cruzes but returned to their regional makers. “We encourage artists to fully engage with the architecture of the space and to approach their projects by experimenting with non-traditional art practices,” says director Ibett Yanez. The 2015 lineup of locals defies boundaries: Amanda Keeley with her nomadic boutique EXILE Books; arts writer Rob Goyanes; and Emmett Moore, who fashions fine and functional objects.

The de la Cruz Collection Contemporary Art Space devotes nearly all of the building Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz erected in the Design District in 2009 to conceptual constellations spanning their decades of patronage. “Beneath the Surface,” through October 2015, unearths the shifting foundations of American life amid globalization as viewed through domestic and foreign lenses.

Miami-based sculptor Jim Drain outfitted the project room last winter with a “Pleat Construction” of his knitwear accented by lighting, glass and wood structures. Drain aggregates ornamental and corporeal elements in “Protector, Knight of Egg” (2010), guarding the courtyard. In the library hangs “The Paper Crown Prince” Hernan Bas painted in 2005. Upon the launch of Art Basel Miami Beach, influential visitors to Fredric Snitzer Gallery fell for the wistful sensuality of Bas’ young male protagonists and raw sexuality of Naomi Fisher’s photographs of female body parts exposed amid tropical foliage. These Miami natives and erstwhile studio-mates (Fisher has shared a workspace with Drain since Bas relocated to Detroit several years ago) rub shoulders with tomorrow’s stars and today’s titans of cutting-edge art anointed

An accomplished photojournalist born and based in Miami, Annette Bonnier captures “India’s Elephants” in Hindu rituals, circus acts, labor and recreation. She pledges 20 percent of proceeds from prints and bound volumes (released last spring by Miami’s Books & Books Press) to the Asian Nature Conservation Foundation (ANCF). at the Rubell Family Collection, in Wynwood since 1993. “To Have and To Hold,” through May 30, tracks Don and Mera Rubell’s record as early adopters of emerging talent from new additions back to their first prescient purchases in the late 1970s. Highlights of 50 artists include an assemblage by Mark Handforth and video by Dara Friedman, spouses who have maintained a Miami residence and international following for 20 years. Also marking a milestone this season is the Margulies Collection at the Warehouse on Wynwood’s

counties: a Jillian Mayer video, Leandra Arvazzetti ceramic, Aramis Gutierrez painting and Bas print.

Connecting South Florida artists and communities is central to the mission of Girls’ Club, founded in 2006 by collectors Francie Bishop Good and David Horvitz to exhibit art by women. “Girls’ Club is dedicated to providing a platform for local artists and nurturing their careers,” says Good. The couple entrusted public artist and architect Margi Nothard of neighboring Glavovic Studio with redesigning the building where Good crafts her own artwork, and charged creative director Michelle Weinberg with activating the space.

Several local artists shown now are collaborating with Girls’ Club on limited editions priced at $100 or less apiece. The sixth season of “Artists in Action!” presents these commissions at talks by Natalya Laskis April 25, Christina Pettersson May 15, and Leah Brown June 27. Girls’ Club doesn’t have to look far for inspired participants, says Rupert, noting “the growth of the local art scene, and the increased visibility and institutional support of artists working in our area.” Such opportunities are drawing artists from around the world to toil, teach and study here, while retaining and retracting homegrown creativity. In this expanded and refined talent pool, our high-profile collectors may find more local catches to suit their discriminating tastes.

“We engage the public in what artists do,” Weinberg says. Interdisciplinary performances and workshops tie into each exhibition’s theme. She and gallery director Sarah Michelle Rupert, artists themselves, explore narrative modes in “The Moment. The Backdrop. The Persona.” through Sept 26. Storytellers include female and male residents of Miami-Dade and Broward

In my neighborhood, art is everywhere and inspires everything. You can find it on the walls and doors. You can buy it in the galleries. You can taste it at our hip restaurants, coffee shops, and local breweries. You can even admire it at a hair salon. I’m Mali, check out my Wynwood video guide and learn about other cool neighborhoods at ItSoMiami.com
