VISIONARY APONTE: ART & BLACK FREEDOM
DECEMBER 8, 2017 - JANUARY 20, 2018 LITTLE HAITI CULTURAL COMPLEX
212 NE 59TH TERRACE MIAMI, FL 33137
Visionary Aponte: Art and Black Freedom takes as its point of departure an extraordinary—and now lost—historical artifact: a so-called “Book of Paintings.” Its creator was José Antonio Aponte, a free black carpenter, artist, and former soldier who was also the leader of an ambitious antislavery conspiracy in Cuba in 1812. During his trial, Aponte was forced to describe each of the pictures in his book. The images portrayed a wide array of subject matter, from Biblical scenes to landscapes to episodes in the history of Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Using Aponte’s testimony, fifteen contemporary artists have reimagined Aponte’s book for our present, inviting us to think about the role of art in making social change. PUBLISHER’S NOTE
15 in Miami ith great joy and pride we arrive to our 15th year, the famous “quinceañera” in Miami’s Latin culture, launching our annual Miami Art Season Guide. One of the greatest joys of this job is discovering the large number of immensely talented artists, gallerists, art professionals and collectors living and working in Miami. We are very grateful for this journey. Fifteen years promoting art events, and we love to be the guide that takes you there! What you have in your hands is the current panoramic view of our art galleries’ hubs (18-23), museums (40-46), art fairs (2427), amazing private art collections open to the public (36-38), along with spectacular art programs that celebrate our diversity all over the county such as the Art of Black (30-34), and now hitting the clouds the portable new e-galleries (20) and artists studios (18). Miami’s year round art activity shows that we are not dependent of blockbuster art fairs. We embrace our art fairs’ week of course (24-27) but we are also creating and producing fabulous art expressions in this digital society the other 51 weeks. Art Circuits digital newsletters and daily announcements promote Miami art scene all year round. This fall art writer Anne Tschida accepted the challenge of choosing the must-see for this season, and we agree with her that when “the mega art fair comes roaring into town, it also puts a spotlight on some of the best art that Miami has to offer “(12-17). Her chronicle coincides with our mission, we are the guide that promotes art wherever it happens, in traditional and new forms and places. This is the annual book that you should keep to return to when you need a spatial compass, because digitally speaking you have Art Circuits’ free app that takes you where art happens, and the artcircuits.com with a calendar and Jodi Farrel’s critic’s choice commenting and showing the unmissables art exhibits of the month. Art is in the air, and Art Circuits is your insider’s toolbox to enjoy the season.

The Art that Shines During Basel When the mega art fair comes roaring into town, it also puts a spotlight on some of the best art that Miami has to offer. Anne Tschida
he art fair that put Miami on the international cultural stage returns for a 16th year, with Art Basel Miami Beach arriving in the convention center – the tightly curated “mini exhibit” in the Kabinett section are always a treat. But there are other notable exhibits and events worth checking out. Just north, the newly designed Bass museum (www.thebass. org) re-opens, with a sprawling exhibit from renowned artist Ugo Rondinone (hint, one gallery is filled with life-size clowns), and the Art Public sculpture garden in the front in Collins Park. Move over to the mainland for another much-anticipated opening – the ICA Miami (www.icamiami.org).The spectacular new building is an art work in itself, but there is also the sculpture garden, and the group show of major influential artists such as Andy Warhol, Dieter Roth and Bruce Nauman in “The Everywhere Studio.” At one of Miami’s major private collections, Pop Art also will be the show-stealer at the The Margulies Collection at the Warehouse (www.marguileswarehouse.com). The exhibit will focus on the epicenter of the movement, the early 1960s, with works from Jasper Johns, Claes Oldenburg, James Rosenquist, Andy Warhol and several other Pop heavyweights. Locust Projects (www.locustsprojects.org) will feature local favorite Pepe Mar in a colorful, immersive installation using textiles and images of his work covering a gallery; he will also be highlighted at Locusts’ booth at the NADA Fair.

Take a break from the visual arts for an intense, stellar performance piece from Lebanese Tania El Khoury, MDC Live Arts’ (mdclivearts.org) special for Art Week, an interactive sound installation of oral histories from the Syrian conflict. Multi-disciplinary artist Derrick Adams curates a show at YoungArts (www.youngarts.org) “Imagination Land,” with 11 artists exploring themes of gender roles and the environment. New York-based Adams will simultaneously have a solo show “Black White and Brown” at Primary Projects (primaryprojectsspace. com), a performative installation with sound, photography and sculpture. PAMM (pamm.org) will host events on its plaza and feature the solo exhibit of Miami resident and internationally acclaimed video and film Dara Friedman. Cross the courtyard from PAMM to take in the expansive, glimmering new Frost Museum of Science (www.frostscience. org) – the three-story aquarium is worth it alone. But there is also the huge domed planetarium and the current exhibit “Brain: The Inside Story.”
