PUBLISHER’S NOTE

How art and design colors Miami

O

n the eve of the art-basel-season we broaden our sight to acknowledge architects, interior stylists, fashion designers, jewelers, and craft makers who, as artists do, bring beauty and a joyful mindfulness to us. If you plan to buy art this season having in mind the question: do I want to live with this? (or worst “I won’t be able to sleep tonight if I don’t take this piece with me” - you know that feeling!) the same argument prevails for our own space and person. Design critic, Beth Dunlop has been alerting us about our surroundings flourishing under different creative influences for years, but now she asked key design-oriented Miamians about Miami style in design. Revealing answers, peek images in p. 20. With twenty art and one design fairs ahead (infographic map on p.38) plus online and mobile app formats, Claire Breukel art critic for art circuits online picked the 10 shows and performances that you shouldn’t miss this Miami Art Week. Browse the images and read why on p.16. Redefining art spaces, some avant-garde hotels are becoming cultural centers as well. Their programs may shift your visiting perspectives. Art Circuits guide informs about Museums and art galleries’ exhibitions. They are offering their best programs and also inviting monumental art celebrities to town, for what is definitely a very intense week. After celebrities leave, shows stay until January. Renowned Private Collections open to the Public, CIFO, De la Cruz Collection, Girls Club, Margulies Collection and Rubell Family Collection, will all be open daily the first week of December with free admission. Until spring they’ll keep their doors open. What a privilege! For those who prefer trekking, Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMC&VB) launches the 3rd edition of The Art of Black, a platform that promotes multicultural exhibits under one umbrella. Miami is diverse and we want to be.

M IAMI’ S A RT WE E K

D E L I C ACIES Miami flavors underscore the 15th Art Basel Miami Beach. Latin spice mixes with staple German conceptualism, topped with a lemon twist of locals and pop-ups. Food stereotypes, Zika and construction setbacks aside, 2016 promises delicacies. Latin America is integral to Miami’s art dialogue and Pérez Art Museum Miami’s exhibition of Argentinian-born Julio Le Parc is just that. Curated by Estrellita B. Brodksy, Le Parc’s retrospective testifies to his major contributions to op and kinetic art. The Brillembourg Capriles Collection brings Latinx masters to PINTA in The Global South that explores new dialogues, uncovers underexposed artists and globally contextualizes these artists. Turning contemporary, José Parlá shows “Roots” in National YoungArts Jewel Box. Curated by SCAD, Parlá’s exhibition explores junctures with being Cuban-American. Fascinations with European-ness sustain, and The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami presents One Day On Success Street by German artist Thomas Bayrle. Exploring the 50-year impact of technology on civilization, Bayrle’s diverse practice is both a joyful and traumatic evolution. Staying in Germany, NSU Museum presents Regeneration series: Anselm Kiefer from the Hall collection, an exhibition of paintings, drawings, books and sculptures exploring Kiefer’s interest in understanding history, specifically the holocaust. Also see the Margulies Collection’s dedicated, scholarly and immersive new permanent installation of Kiefer’s work. Local freshness begins with graffiti pioneers PRIMARY whose immense new Design District gallery features A heap of broken images, where the sun beat by Autumn Casey. 78 Tarot Cards collage art history, Shakespeare, home interiors, the celestial… that decide ones destiny. Tel Aviv-born artist Naama Tsabar opens Transitions #3 at Spinello Projects. Appropriating aesthetic and technical attributes of musical instruments, her sculptural installations shift perceptions of how music and art function. Tsabar’s live performance is on December 2 at 7pm. Miami-based artist Jillian Mayer offers a social media break on “Slumpies”— utilitarian sculptures providing ergonomic seating for today’s phone-dependent persons at the Pérez Art Museum Miami. Curator Claire Tancons spearheads Faena’s one-day processional performance, Tide by Side, featuring Los Carpinteros, Carlos Betancourt, Gay Men’s Chorus, and more, who bring creativity and its social encumberments, to the street. Word on the street is that dealers Jeffrey Deitch and Larry Gagosian are teaming up for a second exhibition at Design District’s Moore Building. This heavyweight pop-up will no doubt be a ticket picante. 18

DESIGN COMES OF AGE an unconventional and elegant aesthetic and large doses of humor. Vivian Carbonell - Artist/ sculptress living and working in Miami. I am a huge fan of her work and admire her rigorous yet warm industrial take on practical furniture.

Miami is both first-adopter and late bloomer. The city has always had style, its own style at least. But what about design? The recent building boom has brought some very good buildings including Frank Gehry’s New World Symphony and the Perez Art Museum Miami. Craig Robins, president of Dacra and founder of Design Miami, is transforming the Design District with large-scale works Marc Newson, Buckminster Fuller, and Konstantin Grcic. Both the Museum of Art + Design and the Miami Architecture Center add to the mix. Art Circuits sought more, so we asked a group of design-oriented Miamians (in fields ranging from furniture to buildings to fashion) to speak about their own work or that of others. Following are excerpts from what they said. –Beth Dunlop

Veruska Vasconez, co-founder of the art collaborative, Meetinghouse Meetinghouse, located in Downtown Miami’s historic Huntington Building, features crossdisciplinary exhibitions, including art, architecture, performance and design, linked by a philosophical need for material and process. We’ve been privileged to work with artists such as architecturally focused painter Karen Rifas, sculptor and designer Emmett Moore, Rita Motta, and architects such as Rocco Ceo and Rene Gonzalez.

Nina Johnson, Nina Johnson Gallery (formerly Gallery Diet)

Rene Gonzalez, architect The lush tropical façade of CIFO, an image created with millions of glass Bisazza tiles, was conceived to create a striking contrast - both in visual subject and scale - with the grittiness of the surrounding neighborhood and appears as a tropical oasis within the urban setting of downtown Miami

I have had tremendous success in exploring the world of design, showing Katie Stout, Aranda/ Lasch, and of course, Emmett Moore’s name has become synonymous with collectible design here. I am also interested in wood workers who are now creating quite interesting responses to design problems. Very close to home, I see this exemplified in the work my husband, Daniel Milewski, has been creating in partnership with Brian Booth, or even via fabricators such as Deft Union who are now producing their own furniture line.

Thais Fontanelle, showroom director Minotti and founder-director of the South Florida design showcase, Inventory Michelle Weinberg’s work is fixture on many important publications all over the US-in large scale as murals and in sidewalks but also in more intimate expressions like ceramic tiles, hand-knotted rugs, textiles, wallpaper and more. Rita Motta’s Mr.O Design studio creates objects and spaces

youth culture. Today one can even commission wonderful unique pieces from talented international designers whomake MIami their home or part time home: among them, Naeem Khan and Oscar Carvallo. I would say Miami’s fashion statement is a nonjudgmental, anything goes. The good news is Miami has always been a place for people watching and is a constant runway show of its own creation.

Terence Riley, architect, former chief curator of architecture and design Museum of Modern Art, New York, and former director of the Perez Art Museum Miami

Peter Menendez A trip to Miami in the late seventies to visit my parents provided an opportunity to see the Pink House in Miami Shores. The visit provided a unique opportunity for a sneak preview, literally, to what was going to become a signature spot in the city. The vocabulary of the house was fresh and now, with several hues of pink suggestive of a Miami story, real or apocryphal. My reaction: if this is Miami, I want to live here. The house was slick but honest, on a prime spot but “modest,” with hints of the nautical, and a practicality manifested clearly in layout and circulation. Romance achievable and not just aspirational.

The Perez Art Museum Miami has been considered an architectural gem since its opening. I think it is fair to say that Herzog + deMeuron’s incredible design is no more fleshed out: the curators have more experience in how to use the spaces to greater effect, the quality of the galleries has attracted more gifts of more impressive works of art, the landscape has matured in a spectacular way. Patrick Blanc’s hanging gardens are both sculpture and living tropical environments. Cathy Leff, founder of The Fashion Project, former director of the Wolfsonian Miami is rooted in an exhibitionist culture dictated by weather and

HUONG Featuring at Miami Art Palace By Suzanne Wentley

A popular Landmark with its dome-structured roof and minarets, a mysterious sight from the Palmetto 826 Expressway and 878 Hwy, the mansion – known as the Miami Art Palace – has been the artist’s studio and the Haven for Art Lovers since 1995. It features inspiring peace and the fascinating art work by renowned Miami artist and fervent peace activist Huong. The gallery features more than 10,000 square feet dedicated to art. A much needed space since Huong’s masterpieces, War and Peace Murals, are comprised of thousands of painted canvases that include interactive panels, encouraging public participation and discussion. The Grand Estate with its Majestic Dome, designed in

1982

by

scientist

Humberto

Contreras, represents the beauty of Mediterranean architecture and has survived all the hurricanes that have swiped through Florida, including Andrew. The Miami Art Palace surrounded by a real tropical paradise with exotic orchids, bromeliad and a manicured bonsai collection, a water lily-covered reflection pond and a 12 foot sculpture by Nicole Taillon of Canada called The Magnificent Hunter. Along with focusing on peace, the artist also tackles other controversial political topics with her work. From political campaigns to immigration to environmental destruction of the world’s oceans, Huong’s murals are thoughtful, timely and beautiful. A truly dedication and creation of a genuine artist who answers the call of her life capturing the unfolding of American history and the world. The Presidential Election 2016. Art Opening: THE ROAD TO THE WHITE HOUSE-ELECTION 2016 MURAL on Sat. & Sun. Nov. 12 & 13, 2016, from 12-7 pm.
