Night and day, Miami sings a song of sculpture, transforming public spaces and private homes. This gloriously diverse song is resonant with multiple textures and rhythms. You could even say it’s akin to the rich variety of sounds soaring through “Pizzi-Cuban Polka” by Carlos Rivera, performed by Miami Symphony Orchestra at the city’s Adrienne Arsht Center during the world premiere of this made-for-Miami musical composition.
ami and Miami Beach,” adds Gonzalez, citing in particular artwork by Ivan Toth-Depena and Dan Graham. Miami Beach boasts impressive examples of sculpture, witnessing the wealth of international cultural talent increasingly choosing to re-locate here for short or extended periods of time. Not to be missed is “obstinate lighthouse” by Tobias Rehberger. Look for this public artwork winking
MIAMI SINGS A SONG OF SCULPTURE Sculpture is responsible for a rhythmic, ever-evolving presence throughout Greater Miami, from the barrier island of Miami Beach to the galleries of Wynwood and Coral Gables. Find it also among towers of downtown, cleverly orchestrated with the Wolfson Campus of Miami Dade College. This presence weaves through vaunted Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places collection, extending to Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden and to The Sculpture Park of Florida International University. It’s a grand chorus of cosmopolitan sophistication not lost on the city’s art collectors. As award-winning Miami architect Rene Gonzalez explains, “I believe clients like to have art and sculpture integrated into their homes typically. In general terms, our clients are often art collectors and have pieces that need to be incorporated into the project.”

Surely this sculptural predilection among private collectors could be shaped by the abundance of outstanding sculpture on view around town. “I think people are always influenced by what they know and what they see. It is great that there are so many wonderful examples of public art in Mi-
by Elisa Turner
with colored lights day and night in South Pointe Park. As the artist himself explains, it’s a beacon bringing together signature virtues of Miami: a robust embrace of art and design and “a vital zest for life.” Rehberger, a German resident, has had over 70 solo shows in major museums and galleries all over the globe. Not far away is “Mermaid” by revered American Pop artist Roy Lichtenstein, preening over the lawn of Fillmore Theater. Celebrated and seductive, this iconic mermaid is rendered as a reclining nude sculpture floating merrily in the sunshine above a miniature pool cresting with waves. Also on Miami Beach is significant sculpture enlivening Collins Park at Bass Museum of Art. Whirling white circles and cylinders of “Twin Vortexes” by Alice Aycock capture the dynamic energy of wind as it whips forward and around, evoking rapid-fire thought and action, perfect for a city always re-inventing itself like Miami. Another impressive sculpture at Collins Park is “Untitled (The Space Beneath Us)” by José Dávila. In vibrant shades of yellow and orange, it offers a startling architectural intervention within the grassy lawn. It also evokes classic abstract paintings, the “Homage to
the Square” series by Josef Albers, via traditional handmade Mexican Tlaquepaque ceramic tiles. At Durban Segnini Gallery of Coral Gables, pay close attention to sharply delineated abstract sculpture of Eduardo Ramirez Villamizar. Initially trained as an architect, this artist began his career as a painter, focusing on sculpture in the 1960s. Much of his pioneering art reflects admiration for geometric abstraction in nature, such as the spiral snail shell, as well as his fervent desire to pay homage to archaeological sites in Latin America such as Machu Pichu and Tikal. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden contributes to the city’s diverse chorus for art with sculpture displayed throughout its leafy treasures. The Garden has hosted memorable shows of art by Dale Chihuly, Yayoi Kusama, and Will Ryman. Currently it features compelling work of Agnes Nyanhongo and other Zimbabwe sculptors in exhibit “Custom and Legend, a Culture in Stone.” Discover their haunting stone figures sited throughout the garden’s spacious and verdant lowlands. Also at Fairchild: Glittering “Hammer Lamps” by internationally celebrated artist Jorge Pardo. Exquisitely crafted from powder-coated steel, Pardo’s lamps gleam night and day from tree branches at Fairchild, demonstrating the artist’s distinctive gift for melding worlds of art and design. There are 108 lamps in all. They create a stunning vista in space as they dangle high above a garden pathway. They can be glimpsed from multiple directions and perspectives, enhancing their three-dimensional presence as sculpture. Rather like a magic, shining lamp or splendid, made-for-Miami musical composition, Miami as a city invites you to experience its richly textured sculptural presence from many perspectives.

West Encounters East
®
The documentary film series West Encounters East ® is a remarkable journey that explores the themes of immigration, alienation and assimilation through the works of Japanese-Brazilian artists, descendants of a century-old diaspora that has given São Paulo the largest Japanese population outside Japan. Created by Executive Producer Stella Holmes with Producer Linda Corley, the documentary is both a celebration of biculturalism and a personal journey of discovery and healing. West Encounters East ® is scheduled to air on PBS in 2013. Image: Jade Matarazzo, © 2012 All Rights Reserved.
