T

he Gold Guide informs our readers of the best shows and art fairs in town this season, from our world-class museums to the hip alternative spaces in up-and-coming neighborhoods. The guide serves as a resource for Miami’s artists and art professionals, intended to reach scholars, collectors, curators, agents and other publishers. about the imminent gentrification. Her ArtCentric column “Miami: Contemporary Art with Caribbean Connections” (pages 14-15) features scholars and Little Haiti residents such as artist Edouard Duval-Carrie, who established his studio in Little Haiti a long time ago, and Maria del Valle, Director of ArtCenter/South Florida, which just opened a [Little River] branch. Margery Gordon, art writer and cultural tours’ guide, contacted the coolest new spaces curated and organized by artists. Margery’s Urban Canvas column features “Making Spaces: Artists Carve Out Their Own Territory (pages 16-17), with addresses and dates of interesting venues and exhibitions not to be missed this quarter. MIAMI: CONTEMPORARY ART

WITH CARIBBEAN CONNECTIONS

ooking for Miami’s newest art district?

not our city’s proximity to this region?”

Travel north past escalating rents and gentrification in Wynwood and Design District.

Caribbean arts and culture, particularly from Haiti, inspire Duval-Carrié’s contemporary art and sculpture, presented at Pérez Art Museum Miami and featured in opera “Makandal” at Harlem Stage Gatehouse.

Explore neighborhoods where contemporary art venues and artists’ studios mingle with Caribbean zest: Little Haiti & Little River. “At this point, it’s still in flux. I’m looking very carefully to see what happens,” says Haitian-born artist Edouard Duval-Carrié, founding artistic director of Haitian Cultural

Arts Alliance. “How will it develop? I’m not a soothsayer, but there are some things already in place, like Little Haiti Cultural Center.” It’s located at 212-260 NE 59 Terrace, near Duval-Carrié’s studio Spotlighting South Florida’s Afro-Caribbean culture, the center includes vivid Caribbean Marketplace. “It’s a signature building,” Duval-Carrié says. The award-winning, recently refurbished marketplace promotes traditional Caribbean arts. “What are we going to sell to the rest of the world,” he asks, “if

Nurturing wide-ranging Caribbean connections in Little Haiti while attracting artist studios and galleries is paramount for Jorge Gutierrez, curator for Haitian Cultural Arts Alliance exhibits. Opening in early December in Little Haiti Cultural Center Gallery is “Borderless Caribbean” [Unmapped Trajectories--Annotating Art Histories], including Cuban American Luis Cruz Azaceta. The center’s “a clear spot of Caribbean identity,” says Gutierrez. “It’s combined,” he adds, “because there’s a stock component of craft and traditional ways of expressing art combined with intentions to develop contemporary expressions, but including the Caribbean as a territory for research and presentation.” Gutierrez continues: “What we envision for Little Haiti is not the typical process of gentrification that you find not only in Miami but in many cities.” It’s essential for real estate investment to support, rather than displace, existing communities. Great cultural neighborhoods in cities usually happen, he says, when there’s “magical” 14

root, values go up, hip bars, restaurants, and creative boutiques open up, maybe even music clubs. Will local residents still afford living there? Is there a plan to nurture a mixed population: low-income residents, artists (also low-income, but hip) and middle-income residents? Is there a plan to have low-income residents design part of the menu of amenities that will appear in the neighborhood?”

In Miami, he adds, “we are a city finding its own history in terms of arts and culture. So every component in the city that has its own identity is an asset.” How to enhance that asset? Gutierrez hopes galleries coming into this area will develop educational programs for children and teens, nurturing future audiences. Cultural organizations like museums can integrate themselves into the neighborhood fabric.

Miami, let’s talk about those exciting plans.

Currently ArtCenter/South Florida tests the waters of Little River at a temporary site, 7252 NW Miami Ct. It’s presenting Dina Shenhav: D.O.A., curated by Tami Katz-Freiman. So far ArtCenter/South Florida director Maria del Valle likes Little River. Positives are affordable rents, accessible parking, as well as proximity to Biscayne Blvd, downtown Miami, Miami Beach. “I don’t know exactly where Little Haiti ends and Little River starts,” she says. Is this area a cultural hub? “I don’t think as a location we are there yet. I think there are very good signs because a lot of artists are moving there.” The area’s “still kind of industrial, a rundown neighborhood, which is the perfect place to develop cultural projects. What’s really important is that we work with the community already there.”

Del Valle praises the area’s diversity: primarily Haitian, but also Hispanic and African-American. “I think it reflects somehow the composition of Miami.” Still, developers, residents, and newcomers must avoid “this process of pricing out people.” All stakeholders should have, she insists, “an indepth conversation about the future.” What’s in store for Little Haiti and Little River? University of Miami professor George Yudice observes, “Once art enterprises take 15

“How do you deal with history in a city that is always in the process of becoming?” designer Domingo Castillo ponders at the Little River gallery he, Loriel Beltran and Aramis Gutierrez branded Guccivuitton (8375 NE 2nd Ave.) as elite retailers displaced several artist-run spaces in the Design District. “Art is a luxury object. Just having the time and money to do this is a luxury.” Low rent helps maintain autonomy despite few sales and loans from collectors to “look at contemporary artmaking through a historical lens,” as in “The Christmas Show” until January. Guccivuitton’s new neighbors Eddie Negron and Marla Rosen named Jenielift (8365 NE 2nd Ave.) after the Genie equipment that elevates their day labor as art handlers. The duo engages

David McCauley is offering art therapy workshops and approaching curators and artists to reimagine the insides and façade of the building, already graced with a moon goddess by Hawaiian muralist Kamea Hadar and Miami’s Tatiana Suarez. Seeing potential in the empty passage below his Little Havana studio five years ago, Adal Delgado conceived 6th Street Container (1155 SW 6th St.) as an outlet for his aging contemporaries. Now he also welcomes regional art students and graduates like Yasmin Khalaf, who debuts deconstructed paintings Jan. 15. The cause of celebrating established but overshadowed stalwarts was taken up at the North Miami complex where father-daughter landlords Robert and Kristen Thiele devote Bridge Red Studios Project Space (12425 NE 13th Ave.) to “developed bodies of work by underexposed artists working diligently.” This long-range view frames highlights Jan. 24-March 6 from the collection of Helen Kohen, The Miami Herald’s beloved art critic emeritus who departed this year. Lou Anne Colodny also dedicates most of her workspace downstairs to mid-career artists; Under the Bridge spotlights Carlos Sandoval De León Nov. 22-Jan. 3. MAKING SPACES

Artists Carve Out Their Own Territory

Kasimir Dec. 1-Jan. 9. Six artists take turns at the wheel of the Co-worker, an old RV that Brandon Opalka converted into an itinerant timeshare. Each member gets two months to customize the contents and destinations, steering this new artist-run model into undiscovered realms. Among those hunting for new homes are Bas Fisher Invitational (basfisherinvitational. com), Dimensions Variable (dimensionsvariable.net) and TurnBased Press (turnbasedpress.com) as Miami Worldcenter prepares to replace Downtown ArtHouse and its surrounding blocks with a 28-acre retail and residential complex. The final show onsite in December is BFI’s “Artist Swap” with Danish ensemble Toves, whose collaboration dwells on navigating impermanent physical and virtual terrain – an apt prelude to the pop-up exhibitions and performances director Naomi Fisher is staging while relocating BFI, launched with Hernan Bas (now in Detroit) 11 years ago. The patrons who donated their Design District studios encouraged expanding access, recalls Oliver Sanchez. A collegial spirit still permeates Swampspace (3940 N Miami Ave.), where Sanchez orchestrates some 20 cohorts’ riffs on the implications of automation in “The Machine Show” opening Dec. 1. Sectioning off their storefront in 2009 to make room for Dimensions Variable opened new doors to “collaborative relationships with not only people here but also colleagues from elsewhere” for Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova and Frances Trombly. DV and BFI are

among the next hosts for Common Field, a “network of experimental, noncommercial, contemporary visual arts organizations” formalized this fall in Minneapolis. Inspired attendee Fisher says, “Bringing the 2016 convening to Miami is crucial to raise awareness and disseminate practical skills to nourish the complexities of our art community at every level.” Clockwise.
