by: Rhea Manila Santos
s the release date draws near for Star Cinema’s Can We Still Be Friends, Gerald Anderson said he enjoyed every minute of working again with leading lady Arci Munoz. “It was great. She was the life of the movie eh, parang life of the party. Yung energy niya, yung sex appeal niya, lahat. And that’s what people are going to see in Can We Still Be Friends. Talagang mas marami silang makukuha. And I think tungkol sa buhay, tungkol sa relasyon, mas maraming tanong itong movie na ito,” he shared. Even though it’s only been less than a year since they were first paired together onscreen, the actor revealed their working relationship still feels natural. “Yun yung maganda kay Arci kasi kahit yung first movie pa lang namin, yung unang eksena pa lang namin sobrang naging kumportable ako agad

learnings he got from the role. “Ang masasabi ko lang sobrang grateful ako because since yung first movie namin ang dami kong natutunan. Siumula ng buong career ko palagi kong sinasabi ang dami kong natutunan sa project na ito or ang dami kong nakukuhang value, pero ito literally and geuinely sobrang totoo ito. “For the last two years lahat ng projects na ginagawa ko there’s something I always learn especially in this movie. Ang daming tanong na nasagot eh. And every time I do a scene parang, ‘Nangyari na sa akin ito’ or ‘Dumaan ako sa ganitong sitwasyon.’ At alam ko yun din ang
mararamdaman ng viewers. Naka-relate ako sobra,” he said. With his co-star Arci recently gone through a break up, Gerald remarked he and his leading lady feel very connected to their characters. “Ang tawag nga sa amin ni Arci #TeamRelate eh. Si Arci is going through something sa personal life niya very recently so mas nakaka-relate siya and me I’m going through something na very similar sa sitwasyon sa movie right now which is Next page pls.
It’s official! Liza Soberano is the new DARNA

being friends with my ex.” Meanwhile, Arci Muñoz proudly walked the red carpet in her jaw-dropping best during the premiere of “Can We Still Be Friends” on Tuesday. Muñoz, who dyed her hair blue, arrived in a revealing white dress, giving the people who graced the movie event at
SM Megamall a generous glimpse of her flawless skin. In a recent interview with Star Cinema, Muñoz acknowledged that she did “overline” her lips. She added that she supports people who undergo plastic surgery as long as the procedure makes them “more comfortable and more confident.”
ANILA – The guessing game is over! Liza Soberano has emerged as Star Cinema’s pick to play the newest incarnation of Darna -- perhaps the country’s most iconic superhero -- in an upcoming film adaptation by Erik Matti. Soberano, who is 19, has built a reputation after starring as the lovable lead of both “Dolce Amore” and “Forevermore” over the past three years with onscreen partner Enrique Gil. She made her acting debut in 2011, and has also appeared in other hit shows like 2013’s “Got To Believe.” In an exclusive interview with ABS-CBN News’ MJ Felipe on Tuesday, Soberano said: “Yes, it is confirmed. Tinatanggap ko na ang role na Darna.” She succeeds Marian Rivera, who was the last to portray the Mars Ravelo character onscreen. Rivera was 24 when she first donned famous fire red costume in 2009, and the choice of Soberano seems to suggest that the newest version will now be a tad younger. Angel Locsin, who played Darna in 2005, was first tapped by Matti to star in his film but a back injury forced the actress out of the project. Locsin has since called her fans to support whoever will replace her. “I now entrust the reins to the next lucky lady who will have the time of her life portraying the role,” she said. A post shared by Angel Locsin (@therealangellocsin) on Mar 21, 2017 at 1:36am PDT S i n c e Darna made her komiks debut in 1950, the well-loved character has been played by several actresses on TV and in films, including a young Vilma Santos in the 1970s. In the original lore, Darna is a warrior from Planet Marte who manifests herself in a village girl from Earth named Narda. In order to transform into the heroine and defend humans from evil forces, Narda swallows a tiny meteorite and shouts “Darna!” -- a small scene which
has since been embedded in local pop culture. The upcoming Star Cinema “Darna” movie was first announced in 2015. Speaking at the time, Matti, who directed the acclaimed “Honor Thy Father,” said he accepted the project so that he could introduce the character to a whole new generation of Filipinos. In his previous interview with DZMM, Matti agreed that Soberano has the built to successfully do the role justice. “She has the strength physically, ‘yung itsura at katawan. And then tama ‘yung edad and you can do a lot of things sa mukha niya. Puwede siya mag-iba-iba ng itsura and she could still look really good. At the same time, Pinay siya na maganda, pan-Asian. Mahirap ‘yung mestiza eh,” he said.

It can degenerate into a free-for-all water fight with much drenching and laughter. Places to see and be drenched include San Juan in Metro Manila; Baylan in Batangas, which stages a lechon parade; Punta in Taytay, near Bacolod City, in Negros Occidental and Camiguin, North Mindanao. People in Xishuangbanna, southwest China, douse one another with a basin of water to usher in spring. In Thailand, people sprinkle water on guests at a water festival in April. The Philippines has its own version of these Buddhist traditions, when it celebrates the Feast of San Juan Bautista, or St. John the Baptist. In many parts of Europe and North

Such gaeity may well be their version of a Philippine fiesta, but for the fact that the custom coincides with the Feast of St. John the Baptist on June 24. West meets east in the Philippines when June 24 is celebrated by dousing and sprinkling of water or by family outings to the beach or riverside. This Filipino custom is the most appropriate way of commemorating the only saint, other than Mary, whose birth is celebrated in the Christian liturgy. (Feasts of other saints fall on the day of their death.) After all, Saint John is the precursor who prepared people for the coming of Christ by baptizing them with water. Matthew 2:11 quotes Saint John as saying: “I indeed baptize wou with water unto repentence but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he sahll baptize you with the Holy Spirit, and with fire.” Anyone who goes to the town of San Juan, Metro Manila on the morning of June 24 cannot stay dry. neither will anyone who visits small towns near a stream, a river, or the sea before noon. grant. “I auditioned two days later for the show’s casting director with four scenes they had me prepare. A few days later, my intuition told me to write the casting director a note letting her know my gender history. Coincidentally or not, I got asked the following day to do a callback audition, which consisted of learning a fifth scene. I had one day to prepare and did all five scenes. A couple days later, I was informed that I was up for network approval where I believe the network executives all watched my audition tape, and a few days later, I got the job,” Ivory recalled. Ivory revealed that the show’s creator Dustin Lance Black had no idea she was a transgender when he saw her audition tape. “He didn’t know I was trans when he saw my tape. He said it was only when we were on the phone for the first time and I shared with him my gender history, that he knew,” she noted. “Pinch my cheeks” She said that when she learned who her co-cast members were, she “literally had to pinch my cheeks.” “When I found out who was in the cast namely Guy Pearce, Mary-Louise Parker, Rachel Griffiths, Michael K. Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie O’Donnell, just to name a few, and that the directors included Gus Van Sant who is a two-time Oscar nominee, and Thomas Schlamme who created the West Wing with Aaron Sorkin and is a multiple Emmy winner, and Dustin Lance Black who is an Oscar winner, and Dee Rees whose work and film ‘Pariah’ I have been a fan of, I literally had to pinch my cheeks.” But when she got down to business, Ivory said she was passionately driven. “Once I got on set and my focus was on doing the best job I could in terms of telling Cecilia’s story, all these amazing artists became my colleagues as we were all committed to telling all these touching stories intertwined,” she said. With her own “rise,” Ivory is dubbed by Hollywood Reporter as Hollywood’s “Next Big Thing.” “It’s truly very flattering to be called that. It’s not a term that I’ve coined for myself, so there’s no added pressure on my part to pursue things any differently from how I’ve done these past years, which is to follow my gut and intuition in terms of choosing projects. For me, the simple guideline is, “Does this excite me as an artist?” So I’ll keep following my joy and trust it leads me to do work that’s meant for me,” she added.

FATHERHOOD: SOURCE AND ISSUE
W
hen I was growing up in a coastal village in Iloilo, every boy or girl was like my brother or sister, every father or mother was like my father or mother, every home was like my home. I am because we are. “It takes a village to raise a child” according to an African saying. Village life addresses the issues of roles, identity, and values. In a sense, I am my village. King David wrote, “A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows is God in his holy dwelling. God sets the lonely in families” (Psalm 68:5-6). The reference is worship in the sanctuary and this relates to the role of the faith community today. James said, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress ….” (James. 1:27). I was aimless as a teenager when I found Jesus or, rather, when Jesus found me. I joined an Alliance Church which was a special kind of family to me. It helped build my Christian foundation. Every local church, though imperfect, is still God’s family – the central locus of

the Fatherhood of God. From God, the fatherhood of man derives its transcendent meaning and purpose. From the church, fatherhood finds its elemental structure and nurture. Malachi prophesied that “He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I (God) will come and strike the land with a curse” ( 4:6). But why are fathers mentioned and not mothers? Perhaps it is because mothers are the lesser problem in caring for their children. The acute problem today is with fathers. More children grow up without the presence of their father. Many don’t even know who their father is. Courts are clogged with paternity suits. We are becoming a fatherless society and children are always the casualties. David Blankenhorn (Fatherless America) came up with a profile of the Good Family Man: 1. Provider and protector, knows the value of money 2. Shows love of spouse and chil-

dren through actions 3. Biblical and moral values – spiritual leader, good role model, good listener, takes time for his family, balances priorities, problem solver, teacher and guidance counselor 4. Flexibility, sharing workload as a partner. This is a comprehensive biblical profile of fatherhood. Unfortunately, this kind of fathers is now a “rare breed”. Vanishing! The evangelistic challenge is: How can we present God the Heavenly Father to a society who has little or no idea of an earthly father? If children do not recognize the authority of God or of their fathers over them, then whose authority will they recognize? They will most like grow up lawless and licentious. Fatherhood is not just about the survival of family but about the extinction of society. If fatherhood fails, will not God bring a curse to the land? Great nations and civilizations are often destroyed from within and at the heart of such destruction is the demise of marriage and the family. God, however, restrains national judgment on the basis of a faithful remnant. Father is both a noun (to be what God created Him to become) and a verb (to do what God wants him to pass to the next generation). This is consistent with the theological idea of “source and issue.” The source (father) replicates himself in the issue (children). And since every father issues from God the Father, then
every father is to transmit to his children that which is inherently given him by God in creation. Every Christian father, then, represents the fatherhood of God to our world. While it is not easy to be a father, God the Father is co-fathering with us. “Don’t faint … you will have your reward” (Gal. 6:9). There is hope. Amen.
