‘We’re different people now’: Shaina Magdayao opens up about working with ex-boyfriend John Lloyd Cruz
S
BY LANCE PAOLO LIM
haina Magdayao opened up about working with her ex-boyfriend John Lloyd Cruz in their film project together called Servando Magdamag. Magdayao, on the sidelines of the press conference for her upcoming 2020 Metro Manila Film Festival summer entry Tagpuan, took the opportunity
to clarify that her appearance in Cruz’s movie Servando Magdamag is just a cameo. “Actually, it’s not my film with [John Lloyd Cruz]. I’ll answer it once and for all para hindi na tayo humaba pa. It’s not my film with him. It’s his film. It’s a Ricky Lee material. It’s called Servando Magdamag. It’s directed by Lav Diaz. It’s not my film. Cameo lang po ako,” she said. Magdayao, who had the chance to work with Diaz in various films in the past, said she initially agreed to do the project as a way of giving back to the acclaimed director. “Sa lahat ng films na ginagawa ko po kasi with Direk Lav, hindi ko po hihindi-an ‘yan. I was able to attend so many international film festivals and the exposure he has given me is something na hindi ko inakalang mararating ko,” she stated. She went on: “Hindi ko inaka-
So this is my way of thanking him by not saying no. So I did a cameo to be very exact.” Then again, Magdayao said she feels happy not just because she was able to work again with Diaz, but also because she got reunited with ex-boyfriend
Cruz for their first-ever project together since their split 2012. “At first, before shooting the film, ang disposition ko was okay gagawin ko ‘to for the love of Lav Diaz. But was we ended and by the last shooting day, I’m happy that I can now say that I was able to support not just my director Lav Diaz also my friend, John Lloyd,” she stated. Admitting that she never expected that she would ever get the chance to work with Cruz considering their past, Magdayao said she’s happy that the opportunity to work with the Kapamilya actor — whom she referred to as her friend — arrived. “I did not see it coming, really. Whenever you would all ask me, ‘di ba? Hindi ko kasi siya nakitang possible na mangyayari. But I guess kagaya nga ng film na ito [Tagpuan], may mga chance encounters pa rin talaga tayo sa buhay. And naibigay ‘yung opportunity. And

The show starring Sam Milby, Yam Concepcion, Yen Santos, and Jericho Rosales revolves around extramarital affairs and its consequences as seen through the eyes of the male lead Lino (Jericho), an angle not commonly explored in programs with comparable plots. It also underscores the struggles of Jacky (Yen), the fearless wife of Sam’s infuriating womanizer character, Ace, and the spiteful ways of Jade (Yam). “Halik” gripped audiences, spawned memes on social media, and consistently enjoyed high TV rating. Its final episode achieved its all-time highest rating of 30.3, based on data from Kantar Media. New stories and new characters always excites me kasi. And I felt na parang ang challenging ng mga mangyayari, hindi lang story wise, kundi character wise. Nung pinitch yung story, parang hindi ako nakahanap ng rason para hindi ko siya gawin,” kuwento niya.
Bagong kuwento ng “affair” at “revenge” ang magiging kuwento ng bagong serye ayon naman kay Sam, na dati nang gumanap sa pinag-usapang serye na Halik. “There’s a lot of revenge stories, and a lot of affair or kabit stories, but this on—because the original title of the show is ‘What Matters Most?’ and for me bilang Gabriel I can relate to that title because may point sa kwento na you have to choose what is more important actually, yung pagiging asawa o yung pagiging magulang,” ani naman ni Sam.

Which is the flip side noon ang hirap because, he’s so creative and when you talked to Kobe about fashion and ideas niya ang dami, ang dami. And I feel like he just need to learn to handle it,” paliwanag ni Jackie.

“Okay so when the beginning when he first came back, he didn’t really want anyone to know and because Kobe doesn’t want to do showbiz,

But then he asked and decided to stay longer and magtatagal na talaga siya sa Philippines, sabi ko ‘you know, ask your dad for more help.’ I think now, he’s back with VIVA.”

we’re really, really good friends and both of us, we don’t want to spoil that. “Okay lang naman kiligin eh, dahil sa kilig niyo, meron kaming supporters and I’m very thankful for that, pero ayun sana lang, lahat tayo maging respectful sa isa’t – isa wala tayong dina-down na ibang tao, sana we know, where to place ourselves pa rin no matter what happens, kasi siyempre, lahat tayo may personal life. Franki Russell addresses dating rumors with Marlon Stockinger
Sky Quizon wishes he could have met John Lloyd Cruz before taking on his role in ‘Tabing Ilog The Musical’
ky Quizon isn’t new to the theater discipline. In fact, the former Pinoy Big Brother alum, a graduate of the University of the Philippines Diliman, has been exposed to various stage productions during his college days. And now, he officially debuts as Rovic (originally played by John Lloyd Cruz in the TV show) in the musical reimagining of the hit 1999 ABS-CBN teen drama Tabing Ilog. But has he tried reaching out to John Lloyd Cruz to seek advice on how he should play the iconic role? “Well, what I did was I tried watching ‘yung mga Tabing Ilog na clips. But parang even the management — I don’t know if they were able to contact John Lloyd na ma-invite manood because medyo MIA [Missing In Action] siya ngayon,” he told PUSH. Since he wasn’t sure how to contact John Lloyd Cruz, he did his research about the show instead. “So as much as I want to reach out and ask for tips kung paano niya binuhay si Rovic before, I just did my own homework. Ako na lang ‘yung nag-research. Pinanood ko siya. At siyempre dati pa siya. Tinitingala ko na siya before pa,” he said. When asked what question he would ask John Lloyd Cruz if he ever gets a chance to meet the Kapamilya actor in the flesh, he said: “Siguro itatanong ko kung gaano niya kamahal si Edz.” The 21-year-old PBB alum also admitted to feeling the pressure as he takes on the role played by one of the most promising actors in the Philippines. “Well, sobra. Definitely nandu’n ‘yung pressure kasi it’s a big, iconic role before. [Tapos] bida si John Lloyd. Pero ako sobrang blessed lang, thankful na sa
akin binigay [at] pinagkatiwala ‘yung role ni Rovic ni John Lloyd before,” he said. He went on: “Gusto ko lamang mas galingan at ipakita na kung paano ko bibigyan ng hustisya ‘yung character ko.”

Quizon also said he hopes to give a new flavor to Rovic’s character through his perspective on the various issues confronting the youth today. “Definitely kung paano ko tingnan ‘yung mundo ngayon, ‘yun ‘yung nilagay kong flavor at timpla kung papaano ko gagampanan ‘yung role ni Rovic,” Quizon said. Tabing Ilog The Musical runs from March 7 to April 26 at the Dolphy Theater located inside the ABS-CBN complex.
ranki Russell has finally spoken on rumors that she and Marlon Stockinger are dating. Last February, former Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) housemate Franki Russell and race car driver Marlon Stockinger sparked dating rumors after photos and videos of them getting cozy with each other made rounds online. Not only did the two of them look sweet in the photos taken during their trip to La Union with some of their friends, but they were also spotted at a launch of a makeup line just days after the first set of snaps circulated on social media. During the March 5 episode of Tonight with Boy Abunda, Franki Russell finally addressed the speculations surrounding the real status of her relationship with Stockinger. When asked by host Boy Abunda if she and Marlon Stockinger are officially together as a couple, the FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano actress immediately responded by saying: “No po.” Russell, who admitted she’s hanging out with him, says she sees nothing wrong about going out with Stockinger. “[We’re] getting to know each other po. As in friends kami. We’re hanging out in groups. We’re enjoying getting to know
each other. We’re both single. He’s single, I’m single. I see nothing wrong,” she said. Meanwhile, Russell also shares how she felt when netizens started comparing her to Stockinger’s ex-girlfriend, Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach. “There was a time when I would read negative things. Pero ngayon na-realize ko it’s not going to make me feel any sort of happiness to read negative things. So I just try to block na lang and not read,” she said. Russell, a Filipina-Kiwi celebrity who spent most of her life in New Zealand, admitted that she’s into meeting new people right now mainly to widen her circle. “Sobrang bago. We’re just exploring. I’ve been here in the Philippines for one year so open talaga to meeting people and making my circle bigger because I don’t go out too much. So it’s nice to meet new people,” she stated. Asked if she’s open to any form of possibility, she answered: “Siyempre naman.” Franki Russell has been previously paired with her ex-housemate Diana Mackey. Meanwhile, Marlon Stockinger and Pia Wurtzbach, broke up after a threeyear relationship in December 2019.

“Of course, if a person is sick, let’s try not to be near them, or make beso, or touch our face after being near them. Aminado naman ang kapwa aktor na si Sam na nag-alala siya noong tamaan ng lagnat nitong kamakailan, na nagdulot pa ng kaniyang pagliban sa isang taping. “Honestly two weeks ago, medyo na-scare ako kasi nilagnat ako and all the symptoms, tapos the next day dapat may taping, pero hindi ako nag-taping. So I isolate myself for a few days. But yung lagnat nag-last lang naman ng six or seven hours, so hindi naman gano’n katagal it wasn’t too scary. Every Brilliant Thing is a onewoman show that breaks the barriers of a typical play by making different audience members participate all throughout the show. It is told through the point of view of a young woman named Angela who relives her childhood memories and how she tries to understand her mother’s depression. Her coping mechanism takes the form of compiling a list of things that makes her appreciate life better every day. It’s no wonder Teresa Herrera’s shows were sold out performances during Every Brilliant Thing’s first run in 2018 because she
is an engaging and charismatic performer, even during the saddest moments in the play. Herrera never lets her infectious energy down throughout the play’s continuous hour and a half run. Herrera draws the audience into her character’s mind, almost reading her like a diary, but also like sharing a long chat with a good friend. More than just a look into Angela’s colorful life, Every Brilliant Thing also helps open up discussion on issues like mental health and depression. Actresses Teresa Herrera and Kakki Teodoro take turns in the one-woman play, Every Brilliant Thing. I got here in London on the 15th of December and as I opened the door, I felt like a kid opening a Christmas present,” she continued. “I never realized that I will be living in London with a husband. Dreams do come true. God is truly faithful. Most of the time we worry, overthink and panic. But let us be patient, it will all work out in His perfect time. Keep pursuing what you want, you’ll get it! Claim it,” she added. It was in January when Rachelle first revealed to Push that she and Martin had acquired a place to call their own in London, saying that it took them a year before they were able to find the perfect home. “Sobrang bait ni Lord kasi hindi ko naman akalain na makakabili ako ng bahay doon kasi mahirap talaga maghanap and naka-tiyempo talaga kami,” she said. As for the design of their house,
Rachelle revealed: “We really prayed for two-bedroom house pero itong house na ‘to parang four-bedroom, three bedroom and a study room, naka-bonus pa nga eh tapos may garden, which that’s actually [my husband’s] priority kasi he is South African and he loves to grill.” Rachelle and Martin tied the knot in a private beach wedding in Boracay in April 2018, after more than a year of being a couple.
A Checklist of Essentials for Job Search “What do you crow about when you have nothing ‘Canadian’?”
T
he bane of every newcomer job seeker is lacking that elusive ‘Canadian experience’. And when you don’t have any ‘Canadian education’ or ‘Canadian training’ or ‘Canadian credential’, seeking a good position and building a good career become more difficult. I didn’t believe this when I first came here. I said to myself, “surely Canadian employers are broad minded and have a wider worldview that talent is without borders.” But I saw this hardship first hand, in my clients, acquaintances, friends, relative and myself. In fact, some who have immigrated here a long time ago were so daunted by the problem of having nothing ‘Canadian’ that they totally gave up looking for work, surviving by other means, e.g., social assistance, taking on the unpaid supportive roles within their families (child-rearing or caring for aging kin). Others went back to their former jobs in their home countries and coming back here for short periods of time to be with their families. So what do you crow about when you don’t have anything ‘Canadian’? 1) Show to employers that you have the skills required. Take some recognized skills tests (that quantify the outcomes) in your profession and write down your excellent scores in your resume. Then, be ready to prove this when you go for an interview. Your goal should not only be to pass but to surpass employers’ expectations as well as the performance of other candidates. For example, recruiters commonly require a 60 WPM (words per minute) typing and 7,000 KPH (keystrokes per hour) alpha-numeric data entry. If you can make this 80 to 100 WPM and/or 10,000 KPH, you surely will stand out. 2) Show to employers that you have the knowledge required. Be ready to excel in technical examinations in math,
science and specific subject matters that are crucial in your profession. Just like skills tests, it is not enough that you obtain a passing score. Of course, a 100% mark is the best outcome. If not, hitting the upper 90s should be your goal. 3) Show to employers that you have superior language skills. Assessment of language proficiency is done by many non-profit agencies, some for free. As a general rule, career counsellors say that CLB (Canadian Language Benchmark) Level 6 or 7 is good enough for non-native English communicators looking for professional positions. Educators raised the bar when they said that universitylevel English is CLB Level 8 or 9. By implication (and in actuality for some) these are also the levels expected by professional regulating bodies given that most professions require obtaining a university or college degree. I still believe though that if you can go up to the highest quartile, meaning, Levels 10 to 12, then your language skills will indeed be convincingly superior which you can then note down the scores in your resumes and be ready to prove when you meet the employer through a series of language tests and/or the job interview. This should be true in all types of communication skills tested: reading, writing, speaking and listening. I say this because I have met people who speak flawless English but can hardly write a sentence without a grammatical mistake. 4) Show the employer that you have a great and winning personality. How you do this is up to you. They say that different personalities have different ways of expressing themselves. Communicate your soft skills in the best way you can. So if you have nothing Canadian, you cannot afford to be mediocre. You must do your best to stand out from among the pack of jobseekers.
1) Curriculum Vitae (CV). This is a written list (no page limit) that is sort of a general resume that includes everything about your professional life: education, training, licences, certifications, experiences (both paid and unpaid such as internship, co-op placement, volunteer), skills (hard & soft, technical & non-technical, personal attributes), projects, affiliations, etc.. You are expected to prepare and continually update only one CV. 2) Targeted Resume. This is a written piece (one or two pages) that gives emphasis on everything that is related (directly or remotely) to the specific position you are applying for. You are expected to prepare as many targeted resumes as the job ads you are applying for. 3) Professional or Occupational Portfolio. This is a compendium or collection of all the documents or artifacts related to your professional life: curriculum vitae, resume, cover letter, list of references, employer reference letters, client testimonials, diplomas, certificates, transcripts, awards, work samples, proofs of English proficiency, etc.. You are expected to prepare only one portfolio for as long as you continuously update it. 4) Reference List. This is a list of the people and their contact information who can attest to your professional/ occupational qualifications. 5) Job Search Business Cards. This contains not only your name & contact information but also the position you are looking for and short statements on the keys points that qualify you for that position. This is not your old business card from your previous position/s.
6) 30-Second Commercial. This is a short self-introductory/ self-marketing pitch that can be used in interviews, cold calling, networking, information meetings, job fairs, recruitment sessions, speed mentoring meetings and other career- related events. 7) Interview Script. This is a list of questions and answers that you should prepare before you go for a job interview and which you can use for practise. You can revise this, as needed, if you apply for another related job in your field. 8) List of Target Companies. This is a list of the companies that need your skills, experiences and qualifications. It includes basic information about each company: name, address, phone, email, website, contact person & that person’s position , products/services, clients/customers, etc. 9) Networking List. This is a list of people in your professional circle plus, of course, their contact information and organizational identity. 10) Job Search Log. This will help you keep track of your applications. It should contain essential information such as position applied for, company name, date applied, method of application, job reference number if there is any, etc. 11) Job Search Calendar. This will help you organize your time and keep track of your appointments. The above can be prepared manually (in paper form) or electronically (saved in laptop or a cloud storage). When done, only then can you claim that you are really job search ready.
