REFLECTIONS By Dr. Jun Vencer

THE SIN OF SLANDER

E

xperience tells us that perhaps the greatest obstacle to church growth is church division. In Corinth there was as factionism (some claiming to be with Paul, others with Apollos and others till with Peter – 1 Cor. 1:12). Among the disciples, there was leadership struggle as to who will seat on the right and left side of power. Disagreements among God’s people are found all throughout Scriptures. To mention some: Cain killed Abel, Lot disagreed with Abraham, Joseph was hated by his brothers, Paul and Barnabas parted ways, Eudia and Synteche where not in good terms although they worked with Paul. Such division replaces grace and love with toxic venom and bitterness. The results are spiritual stagnation and the weakening of the Church witness in the community. Division is not of the Holy Spirit. It is a key strategy of Satan as he relentlessly attack the Body of Christ rendering powerless the Kingdom of God. The devil, if he cannot make Christians do the wrong thing, makes him do the right thing the wrong way. Often disagreements come not because one is not right in his views but in his un-Christ-like attitudes. In factionism - whether in church, in the family, in an organization - nobody wins for all are victims. Mahatma Gandhi once said: I like your Christ but I don’t like your Christians. Of course this is tragic and the only lame response I can think of is that the world should have observed Christians before they became one or how much more worst things could be if they did not become one. One of the factors in church or community division is the untamable tongue, a restless evil and full of deadly venom (Jas. 1:26;

n Tonight with Boy Abunda, Bea Alonzo and Gerald Anderson said they’re both excited to co-star in a movie to be directed by Dan Villegas under Star Cinema. Gerald said, “I’m very excited of course, because she’s the best and it’s great to work with the best.” Bea said, “Matagal na no na dapat almost magkakatrabaho kami pero ngayon lang natuloy. So baka ito yung tamang timing.” The two used to date back in 2010. Asked if past sparks are coming back, Gerald admitted,“para sa akin never naman nawala. ‘Di ba tingnan mo na-

man siya, lagi siyang may spark.” Bea explained, “It’s too early to tell. Right now parang na-excite ako to see him and look at him o, ang gwapo o.” Bea was also asked about the status of her relationship with actor and onscreen love team partner John Lloyd Cruz. There have been rumors of a romantic relationship between the two. Bea said, “no, we’re friends.” And whether she will support John Lloyd’s movie with Jennylyn Mercado, Bea says, “oo naman, sila ni Direk Cathy (Garcia-Molina) yan e. Papanuorin ko.”

3:8). It can start with a miscommunication and magnified beyond proportion. Then it becomes a conflict of “righteousness” a verbal war. Gossip is a common problem in any community or church. Paul classified it along “slander, arrogance, and disorder” (2 Co. 12:20). The Bible says that gossip betrays confidence (Pr. 11:13) and causes close friends to separate (Pr. 26:20). Among the six things the Lord hates is a “lying tongue … a false witness … and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers” (Pr. 6: 17,19). In fact, “without gossip a quarrel dies down” (Pr 20:20). The tongue can praise God or curse men and women created in the image of God. In this sense, God is the most hurt. The Rabbis referred to gossiping as the sin of slander. In fact, leprosy is associated not just with medical symptoms but with slander. Reference is made of Meriam who contracted leprosy when she criticized her leader Moses. She was excluded from the community until she was restored (Nu. 9). Gossiping has three victims: the gossiper, the one gossiped about, and the silent listener who does nothing to stop it. The latter becomes an accessory to the sin. In this sense, gossip is both a sin of commission and omission. In the Old Testament, to restore a person back to the community, two birds were involved in the ritual. One is sacrificed at the altar to cleanse the person of his or her sin of slander. The other bird symbolizing the new freedom to speak well in the worship of God and edification of one’s fellowmen. Who owns our mouth? If is God, then we should use it to edify our fellowmen and to praise God. If you cannot bless a brother or sister, say nothing for a while, until in His grace you can. Amen. Dr.Agustin (Jun) Vencer, Jr. (LLB, DD, DLitt, PHD Applied Theology) is the President of Global Transformational Ministries and Pastor of the Alliance International Church of Pearland in Texas, USA. He is married to Annabella Castillo Vencer. They have four children and six grandchildren. Why Kristine Hermosa sacrificed it all to become a mom

W

by: Gerry Plaza

ho would believe Kristine Hermosa will turn away from it all? She was one of the most visible and celebrated stars on the Kapamilya stable, being one of the network’s top leading ladies throughout the 2000s. \ Definitely, she would cast that spell, with a mesmerizingly beautiful face that would captivate anyone. Also her acting craft was aplomb, touching televiewers to the furthest intensity of emotions. Indeed, she was a star who had it all. Leading the cast of one top rating teleserye after another, and also starred in blockbuster movies that drew immense acclaim. Who could forget her breakthrough role as Agnes in Sa Sandaling Kailangan Mo Ako and the riveting remake of the character Luisa in Gulong ng Palad. But of course, Kristine is best remembered as the original YnaMacaspac in the timeless classic PangakoSaYo, which not only became the standard grade in teleseryes but also one of the most successful ever made. But all of these had to take the backseat. And, as she tied the knot with Oyo Sotto in 2011, it became very clear in her mind and in her heart: she will focus on family. Since then, Kristine had virtually “retired” from show business, bowing out of the scene and became the Mrs. Sotto she really wanted. She gave birth to Ondrea Bliss that same year she and Oyo tied the knot. Three years later, she gave birth to their youngest, Kaleb. The couple also has an adopted son, Kiel. And with that, it was a no-brainer for Kristine to turn down showbiz comebacks left and right, including the recent remake of her career-defining teleserye that featured Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla. Why? For Kristine, being a mother is one fulfilling joy she would never replace anything with. It’s “God’s gift,” according to her. In an interview with StarStudio Magazine, she shared the joys of being a mother.“Siyempre iba kapag mom ka kasi you have to know yung tamang medicines, tamang vitamins,”Kristine said. “Kailangan mo silang dalhin sa pedia every month. Yung mga kapatid ko naman, nandoon naman yung nanay ko (mommy Alma),” she added. In the end, she revealed the main reason why all the pomp and glory of being a successful actress and celebrity; why the glam and fame meant nothing to her as she received the “gift” of motherhood?“Talagang all-out ako (being a mom),” Kristine said.

Kris Aquino admits knowing Abu Sayyaf threat, says it is the reason she took a showbiz break

I didnt renew with ABS CBN because of this threat.” Presidential sister and TV personality Kris Aquino admitted knowing about the alleged plot to kidnap her by the Abu Sayyaf, saying that it was her reason for taking a break in show business as reported by Marinel Cruz in the Inquirer.net on Thursday afternoon, April 28. In a text message sent by Kris, she admitted knowing about the threat since late February. Having earlier cited her health as the reason for leaving show business, she nonetheless cleared that it was not fabricated as she was really experiencing high blood pressure due to the stress brought by the threat. “Honest truth, I was made aware of this plot late February, early March. My sisters tried to shield me because they didnt want me to have more fear than necessary. If you recall, my sons and I left in March to go abroad for three weeks. The health reasons I cited werent fabricated because the stress coming from the threat had caused my BP to constantly elevate to higher than 150/110,” she said. The Queen of All Media also said that although leaving the business was a painful decision, she did not want to cause others harm hence, she decided to no longer renew her contract with the Kapamilya network to which she was with for almost 20 years. She said, “I didn’t renew with ABS-CBN because of this threat. That was a painful decision, but I needed to make that judgment call so as not to expose others to harm. It was that serious that I walked away from a new two-year contract for a job I’ve loved for 20 years. I informed my bosses the pertinent facts, but not full details from the intelligence reports, and they kept what I was allowed to relay to them under wraps. I was told to strictly keep the news contained and I obeyed. And I am grateful for the respect I was shown. And to their credit, everybody closest to me both coworkers, relatives and friends kept quiet to protect me and because they knew this was a matter to be taken seriously with utmost precau-

tion.” Kris also said that since her family’s return to Manila, she and her sons Josh and Bimby have been living with her brother, President Noynoy Aquino, who earlier revealed that Abu Sayyaf allegedly has plots to kidnap Kris and Filipino boxer-congressman M a n n y Pacquiao.

Zanjoe... Con’t. from page 21. Center for Children. Instead of just inviting celebrity golf players this year, Zanjoe opened the 3rd Z Cup to non-showbiz personalities in order to be able to gather more funds for the chosen charity. But keeping himself busy with other things is seemingly not a mere defense mechanism for Zanjoe as he stressed that he is in a good place in his life right now. “Moved on. Hindi ko alam, paano ba malalaman kung naka move-on? Pero happy ako ngayon kung ano ang nangyayari sakin. Happy ako sa buhay ko and ‘yun ang importante doon,” he said.

What is more is that, despite parting ways, Zanjoe shared that he and Bea are on speaking terms. “Masasabi kong okay kami. Kapag nagka-text kami, normal naman. So siguro masasabi ko na kapag magkikita kami sa isang lugar hindi kami magiiwasan. Hindi kami matatakot na ‘Nako baka nandoon siya,’” he explained. “Okay kami.” But will there be a second chance for them? “Sa ngayon ewan ko pero hindi natin masasabi eh. Ang importante naman eh hindi kami magkaaway. Diba? So maraming pwedeng nangyari,” he said. Apart from Tubig at Langis, Zanjoe shared that he will be starring in a new film within the year.

he outpour of offers for West End Diva Rachelle Ann Go continues locally as she was announced to be part of a concert titled Divas in Manila. Joining Rachelle Ann onstage for their one-night only concert on November 11 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum are Angeline Quinto, Kyla, Yeng Constantino, and KZ. Rachelle, during the upcomi n g show’s press conference, expressed her excitement to share the things she learned about being part of the iconic West End show L e s Miserables, which eventually shaped h e r “new voice.” The local run of Les Miserables is ending this weekend and, according to Rachelle Ann, she will be flying to London after it. Despite the fact that she would be away again, Rachelle Ann said that she would be returning to the country soon to rehearse for the show especially since she got Les Miserables’ producer Cameron Mackintosh’s go signal for the concert. “Uuwi ako dito for this. Ipinaalam na namin ‘yan sa Les Mis London, pumayag naman sila. Alam naman nila na may Divas Live in Manila na magaganap sa Araneta so they’re very supportive,” she explained. Rachelle Ann claimed that Cameron actually agreed to the idea of doing a local concert. “Parang feeling ko siya yung nagpaplano ng career ko. Nakakatuwa, supportive,” she said. Asked what the concert-goers can expect from her end on the November concert, she shared: “Definitelymakakasama po diyan ang mga nagawa ko na sa Miss Saigon at Les Miserables and ‘yung mga gusto kong gawin ‘yung mga kanta ng dream roles ko. So hopefully magawa ‘yan.” Speaking of Les Miserables, the show’s London-run is set to end this coming December. What is going to be next for Rachelle Ann after that? “Babalik muna ako dito. I want to spend Christmas here kasi dalawang taon na kong nagpa-Pasko dun. And then New Year. “And then let’s see what will happen next. Kung Broadway uli or West End,” she said. Rachelle Ann said that she dreams of being part of other hit theater shows like Wicked and Hamilton. Although she is currently a contract star of GMA, Rachelle Ann is seemingly open for any other types of offers including returning to ASAP which she used to be part of. “Hindi ko pa alam kung anong plano, siyempre. Gusto ko pag babalik ako dito, gusto ko, kumbaga ma-enjoy ko rin siyempre yung show at may plano. Tignan natin ‘yan,” she said.
