REFLECTIONS By Dr. Jun Vencer
REFLECTIONS ON MARRIAGE I.
MARRIAGE: BEFORE THE FALL
Many anecdotes are going the round. A Greek philosopher was asked: Which is better, to be married or to remain single? His answer was: Either way, you will regret it. Some say that marriage have stages: engagement ring, wedding ring, suffering, and enduring. Moreover, they say that the stages of marriage is in the phrases asawa na; sawa na, awa na and then wa na. Others say that marriage is not matrimony but purgatory – a place where two people are prepared for a better life. However one may view marriage, the fact is that God instituted marriage (Gen. 2) as an institution for a lifetime of shared joy between a man and a woman. It is the foundation of social stability. In today’s world, marriage seem to become a mere legal or ecclesiastical formality, a civil contract to legitimize children or simplify social life. Annulment or divorce is a convenient way to solve marital difficulties. Christian marriage, however, is a solemn covenant entered into between man, woman and God (Mal. 2:14). Essential to the covenant is the Word of God as their supreme authority in faith and life. Husband and wife are accountable to God above and beyond the terms of their civil contract. Let us then look at the Word of God for our instruction. On the sixth day of Creation, God created man (Adam) from dust (Gen. 2:7). He (and Eve) was created in the image of God (v27). They were tasked to “multiply and to have dominion of creation” (Gen. 1:26,29). He was to work (be productive) and to keep (preserve) creation as God intended it to be. He named the animals (2:20) and he found out that they came in pairs with capacity to produce their kinds. But there was no suitable partner for him. He was alone. This aloneness or loneliness must have been the reason why God did not say “it was good” when Adam was created. These events made Adam aware of his needs to fulfill his vocation or calling in creation. The creation of Eve was in the context of two needs essential to the fulfillment of God’s purposes for Adam, i.e., to multiply and to have dominion. So God created Woman (ishah) to become a comparable partner to fulfill Adam’s mandate to have dominion over creation. Adam called his wife Eve (Chyavvah) recognized her role as life-bearer (3:20). So that as Woman, she was a partner. As Eve, she was the mother of all generations. Adam was dependent upon Eve to multiply just as Eve was dependent upon Adam to have dominion. Adam and Eve become humanity (Adam). This oneness of man and woman as Adam explains why after the marriage, the wife takes the surname of the husband. When Eve was created, Adam was made complete. In their marriage union, husband and wife complete each other. And so God declared “it was good” (Gen. 1:31). In the marriage of Adam and Eve, Adam was to be the head of the relationship and the family. This was because of the following: (1) Adam was created first; (2) Eve was created for Adam; (3) the cultural mandate was the vocation or calling of Adam and Eve was to help him fulfill it; (4) the couple carries the surname of the husband; and (5) Adam was to be responsible for his wife (Gen. 3:8) and the wife accountable to her husband (Gen. 3:15). Paul understood the creation order as normative for marriage (2 Corinthians 11). Marriage then is not to be entered lightly but circumspectly, in prayer and soberness. In marriage, the man yearns for her who is missing and taken from his ribs while the woman is longing to belong to the one from whom she was taken. Jesus warned His disciples about the difficulties of the married estate (Matt. 19:10). Paul was unequivocal in saying that to be single is better (1 Cor 7:7-9) but because of passion and temptation to fall into immorality, marriage is the God-given framework to meet the natural needs of man and woman for sexual intimacy. Because God created man and woman, same sex is not permitted. Because God created only one man and one woman, the intent was a monogamous marriage. Because man has no suitable helper from animals, bestiality was not allowed. And this relationship is a Covenant with God and not just a contract between a man and a woman. As a covenant, God is a party to the marriage that is designed for permanent and exclusive relationship between the husband and the wife. As Paul puts it until one of the party dies (Rom. 7:2). God hates divorce (Mal. 2: 16). For Christian couples, marriage as a covenant is a sacred relationship. It is an institution ordained by God for His glory. It is greater than the husband and wife. It has a role in God’s redemptive plan. For the married couple, marriage is a paradigm of hope when Paradise will be regained from a prestine garden to a Celestial City (Rev. 21:2). If the effect of sin is guilt and shame in nakedness (Gen. 3:10), then the only place where

yla successfully dominated the charts and captured the hearts of the online world with her hit teleserye theme song On the Wings of Love. Now that she has made her mark in theme songs, the singer was asked if there is a competition that’s brewing among Angeline Quinto, Erik Santos, and herself. Both Angeline and Erik are known for their hit theme songs for the past couple of years. “Ako po personally wala po akong nararamdaman na[competition] kasi I’m sure siAngeline at Erik sobrang dami na nilang nagawang theme songs more than sixty, thirty plus each, theme songs sila ni Erik at ni Angeline and sila naman [they] happily give way to other artist like mepara makagawa ng theme song sa ABS-CBN. Walang competition sa amin, sobrang sa Cornerstone (their Management) magkakapatid kami doon and they are really nice people, [si] Angeline, Erik,” she stated. The R&B singer stressed that she is not competing with anybody, but rather she is focused on putting her best foot forward in every project entrusted to her. “I don’t feel like competing with anybody es-
pecially sa mga kapatid ko sa Cornerstone because we are in a good relationship and we are in a good state right now and I am just doing my job and doing my best to interpret kung ano man ‘yung projects na they will offer me.” With all the success that she is enjoying right now, Kyla is truly thankful to the Kapamilya network for all the opportunities that have been given to her. “I’m just really happy na kahit a few months pa lang ako, they already sent me to London, TFC shows, out of the country tour and binigyan nila ako ngchance kantahin ang On the Wings of Love na very successful and I’m so happy na gabi-gabi, naririnig nila ‘yung boses ko sa [Primetime Bida],” she said. Kyla is now celebrating her fifteenth year in the Philippine music industry and she is set to stage an anniversary concert in November 20, 2015 at Kia Theater. “This will feel like a celebration, it’s like a thanksgiving para sa lahat ng mga tao who supported me, who listened to my music for fifteen years. We are very excited dahil gagawin namin lahat para ma-entertain lahat ng manonood ngayongNovember 20,” she said. By Kristhoff Cagape
man and woman can be naked and not be ashamed is in marriage (1 Cor. 7:3-5). For this reason, the marriage bed must be undefiled (Heb. 13:4). Marriage is a life-time union of imperfect people. Wives enjoy shopping when there is a sale. But the products on sale are tagged “as is.” It is safe to say that when a man and a woman make their vows at the marriage altar, they also take each other as “as is”, i.e., with hidden defects. Moreover, the relationship is permanent, i.e., “no exchange, no return.” Couples discover only after that marriage is not a happily-ever-after relationship. Being Christians gives no guarantee of a problem-less marriage. In fact, the problem began before the marriage. As the saying goes “love is blind.” The denial of imperfection is often true during courtship and before the marriage. When marital difficulties arise, our comfort is in the fact that Jesus, the Lord of Marriage, promises that He will never leave nor forsake His children whose faith is in the Lord. After the marriage the couple starts the journey from eros to agape wherein the husband and wife find their highest joy only when they constantly affirm that they are for each other only but both are for the Lord. We take comfort in the assurance “that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ” (Phil. 1:6).

Playing the role of his ex-girlfriend is Coleen Garcia as Arki, who resurfaces in Adam’s life as a medical representative who needs him to endorse her company’s new product. Although many wondered if choosing a daring role was right for Coleen’s launching mainstream movie, the Pasion de Amor actress

In an interview in Metro Magazine’s September 2015 issue, Liza shared how her parents went their separate ways while she was still very young. “I think my dad moved back to the Philippines when I was like, [age] one and my mom was pregnant with my brother Justin. So I was just with my mom for a while.” When her mom was put in a position where she could not take care of them, she was out under her grandmother’s care. However, her grandmother developed a health condition so they needed someone to take good care of them. She was then left in the care of her dad’s (John) parents who were still living in California at that time. “I don’t have the perfect life. I don’t have a complete family, I’ve never had the perfect Christmas nor the perfect birthday because my family is never complete. One year and six months na siya ngayon,” she said. As a first time mom, Jolina said starting a family changed her view on things. “Oo, lahat ng ginagawa ko ngayon, kung dati dalawang beses ko iniisip para sa sarili ko, siguro ngayon lima ng beses ko ng iniisip kasi para kay Pele at sa pamilya ko like sa asawa ko at sa anak ko kasi gusto ko kung naging magandang example ako sa maraming tao nung bata pa ako, siyempre ngayon gusto o pa rin maging magandang example lalo na sa anak ko kaya ganun,” she shared. Jolina said working on a heavy drama helped expand her talents as an artist.

After Flordeliza, she is set to do a new series called Written in our Stars with Toni Gonzaga, Piolo Pascual, and Sam Milby. “Hindi pa lang naman alam talaga kung kalian yung first taping day pero naannounce na gagawin namin yung project na yun,” she admitted. The 36-year-old actress admits she enjoyed working with former love team partner Marvin Agustin on the show and hoped they can be paired again onscreen in the future. “Siyempre naman dapat kasi siguro dito sa Flordeliza hindi naman talaga kami nagkatuluyan so marami pang

indi lang mga kababaihan ang nagkakandarapa sa Pambansang Bae na si Alden Richards dahil pati mga endorsers ay pinag-aagawan na rin siya. Dahil dito ay hindi matawaran ang pagpapasalamat ni Alden sa tinatamasang suporta mula sa kanyang mga fans. Aniya, “It’s not just about the click, it’s not just about the laughter that we give. It’s more of the inspiration that we want to impart to the viewers. Kasi nakakatuwa po na nag-e-enjoy kami sa mga nangyayari, nag e-enjoy kami sa mga ginagawa namin, [and] at the same time nakakapagbigay kami ng lessons sa mga manonood.” “Nakakatuwa po sa lahat po ng nakaka-recognize sa amin, maraming maraming salamat po,” dagdag pa niya sa 24 Oras. Itinuturing ni Alden na malaking blessing ang pagsikat ng kanilang tambalan ni Maine Mendoza o Yaya Dub na AlDub. Gayunpaman, inamin din niyang marami siyang hirap na pinagdaanan bago makamit ang kung ano mang tinatamasa niya ngayon. “Mga pangyayari sa buhay ng isang tao, darating ‘yan talaga in the right time. Tamang panahon. Totoo ‘yun, ‘yung sinasabi ni Lola [Nidora] kahit na-
kakatawa siyang pakinggan,” batid ni Alden. “Totoo siya kasi ako, sa dami nang pinagdaanan ko when I started, bago ako magsimula at nasaan ako ngayon, mas marami ‘yung naghirap ako eh,” patuloy ng aktor.
