The Artists Introduction

Money makes the world go round - an essential component of life and the lifeblood of society. Most people need it, some chase it and many of us change because of it. Alot of society is prepared to give up their freedom to get it. For many it’s for survival, a privaleged few for a greater choice in life and how they spend their time. For me it's a combination of all of those things with some added inspiration that explores both sides of the coin. Whatever money means to you. I’m delighted to share and showcase and share this ‘Story of Money’ featuring my body of work from 2011 to 2016. Dollarsandart is contempoary Art that tells a story, celebrating life wherever possible whilst challenging questions about the nature of wealth, economics and society. When I was a four year old boy. I loved to paint, you know what its like being that child that has no boundaries, care free, just an unbridled passion for life. Then something happens, the boy becomes formed and challenged by life as we crack on and try our best to conform. I still don’t know whether I hit the bottom or the bottom hit me in late 2008, the start of a ‘rather difficult time’. As people, constants and material things in life I once took for granted left me, as I experienced one traumatic set back after another. ‘Wealth is the ability to fully experience life’ – Henry David Thoreau The sense of loss was so overwhelming, at this point something happened within me, deep down in my core. A part of me ignited, it came alive, suddenly I started looking at what surrounded me differently. Layers of conformity fell away as I turned to art during what I now realise was my cry for help. Although I had no formal training, art gave me a way to express myself for the first time in a very free and liberating way. ‘Even Castles made of sand, fall into the sea, eventually’ – Jimi Hendrix The urge to express my feelings, in my early work and put my frustrations onto canvas become an instant passion. As an intoxicating nervous energy rushed through me, a non-judgmental view point replaced the previous desire for ‘stuff’ and a feeling of liberation took control. Since being that four year old child, I felt back in the moment, the results of that epiphany and the five years that followed are contained within this catagloue. - The Story of Money. It’s been a real labour of love and a huge learning curve with a critical hands-on approach every step of the way. Exercising cuation in buisness is easier said than doen at times with sadly money still owed to me from some rather unexpected sources and gladly coming in from equally suprising ones. Either way I’m sure it will all balance out as nature and greater forces always do. ‘The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance on things, but their inward significance’ – Aristotle My work is about bringing art to people, attempting to capture various moments of modern day life and days gone by whilst destroying limiting beliefs, smashing boundaries and presenting something that can either be loved or loathed. As the art comes out to meet you, I invite you to discover what’s beyond the art, aside from what you see and explore what does it means to you. You, like the grains of sand upon which this story was formed, are different to the next, whist sharing the space we call life as the journey continues.

I’ve enjoyed seeing how Jim has developed from hosting (and losing to) me at Golf, to making his mark in the Art scene in his own unique and enthusiastic way. He rose to the challenge delivering my 60th birthday commission, ‘Red & Green Colourblind$’ (page 156) where the dollarsandart original was auctioned by Lord Jeffrey Archer for Beefy’s foundation. It wonderfully conveyed the story of a lesser-known fact about my colourblindness, struggling to distinguish between the colours red and green - pretty important colours in cricket! That Dollarsandart was about overcoming a perceived weakness which many of us continue to do so as we strive to be the best we can be. Jimbo being a fine example of exactly that! I am personally delighted to support The Artist Jim Wheat and his company, Dollarsandart FZE. Over the years I have got to know Jim very well. He has boundless energy, passion, resilience and a love of what he does is contagious. Our paths have crossed as we share a common interest in sport and its values. Dollarsandart is all about how people, companies and organisations react differently to money. Just like every grain of sand is different, so is everyone’s reaction to the Dollar. Dollarsandart explores this. Its very apt that Dollarsandart was created in the desert in Dubai and hence the importance of the word “sand” in the brand. It’s something I believe in from my own personal experiences of money and how I have reacted differently as the sands of time shift. There is huge potential for growth in Dollarsandart. It’s an extremely innovative concept and in a materialistic society everyone certainly put a different emphasis on money. At the moment Jim is the main artist but there is clearly potential to add more artists and exhibitions who all explore this theme. Over the years I hope I have offered him impartial business guidance and ideas to ensure the company goes from strength to strength. As Jim says, Onward$ and Upward$ and we are very much looking forward to the development of Dollarsandart into a truly global concept over the years. Firstly, WHEAT distinguishes between two levels of his work. The first is under the umbrella of the brand Dollarsandart, which is profiled as guerrilla / gorilla marketing commercial project linking Jim’s creation of golf events, jerseys for the ice hockey team or luxury resin floors. Within these projects his work is on the fine line between art and design. Here, I find it interesting in the way in which he communicates his project in the media and its ability to get to places and get contacts, which at first glance appear to be unapproachable. I wondered whether it would be possible to cover this initiative as neo or post conceptual but later rejected this idea. The second aspect of Jim, which I find more interesting is the Artist himself, who I have been following for some time and I like the growth of his personality as an author, artist and ambassador. Firstly the reason why he started doing art - due to the crisis in his personal life, as relationships around him fell apart and hit him hard. From the ashes of relationships, loss, emotion and frustration was born artist whose work initially compensated for their own life situation, and it was a form of arte-therapy. Expressive creation that has become characteristic for him, and since it refrained, in itself spanned two elements. The money he desperately needed to live in the sand of Dubai, which in the context of the U.A.E is important and relevant. His role in the cultural scene of Dubai has become will be interesting on the run up to Dubai 2020 Expo. He started in his Heroes & Villains (2015) exhibition to compare the social differences between the higher end social classes of celebrities and the poorer working class. Adding signed $1 bills together with historical artefacts in his work shaped into a new context that points out the relationship with money. On the whole, it is my view, the reference to current events in the region where Jim lives. Thus, his work becomes authentic and worthwhile to devote some time it may also be incorporated into the collection. The Money Collection Showcased at The Media One Hotel 07th March – 04th April 2013 The 1st Dubai $ Project Having been surrounded by materialism since 2002 in Dubai, Wheat’s eureka moment of clarity came when he mixed paint and sand together to form a dollar sign after an inspiring trip to the Gulf coast in 2011. Before he’d even put a collection together, exhibited and framed his first work of art ‘#11 ELVI$’ (Page 31) , ‘Dollarsandart’ was born.

to question their values, lifestyle and ultimately what money means to them. ‘It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver’ - Mahatma Gandi The breakthrough

Back in 1994, during his ‘dream year’ when studying his Masters Degree in Civil Engineering at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, U.S.A, Wheat signed his first $1 bill as a good luck charm for his Mother. Little relasiing the significance this gesture would have in later life as he aimed to live his own ‘American dream’.

In today’s world, artists need to understand the value of self publicity more than ever. Wheat, a natural sales and marketing man, knew better than most how to sell an idea. Although the challenge he faced was where to showcase his collection without any history or the art world knowing the first thing about him.

The 28 strong Money Collection was developed and assembled from late 2011 and throughout 2012, finding order in a prolific outburst of child-like dollar signs in and around his Sheikh Zayed Road appartment. The collection was derived from this very unique form of expression from his own solitary experiences and struggles.

Establishing yourself amongst the noise of modern life is no easy task, especially as an unknown artist, but Jim found the break he needed from an unexpected place following rejection after rejction despite his energy and enthusiasm. Then, whilst on a Facebook social media course the breakthrough came as he volnuteered to share his dollarsandart page with the students making his case for ‘having the artwork, but nowhere to showcase the collection’. A literal tap on the shoulder came from Sally Meech, Marketing Head at the vibrant and well placed Media One hotel and within 6 weeks, incredibly his first exhibition was open throughout the ground floor.

The Trigger As he and those around him chased the dollar during the economic crisis of late 2008, What followed in 2009 and 2010 was the loss of several things very dear to him. This was the emotional catalyst Jim needed to produce this first collection – first picking up the paintbrush and throwing sand at the canvas soonafter, Having the desire to share things that had happended to him during day to day life in Dubai he collected materials from his day-to- day experiences to help tell the story.

This funky, open-minded venue teamed up with the energetic and determined artist to display his work in a very accessible way. Rather than host just another exhibition Jim founded the Dubai Dollar Project which gave art lovers - and those intimated by the arts - an excuse to really appreciate his work in detail, by giving some of it away.

Sand, resins, cotton, sporting equipment and currency feature in his work. Signed dollar bills and the dollar symbol are common motifs across all the originals in this collection with titles like ‘#28 Indulgen$e,’ and ‘#19 $peeding’ (Page 47) and ‘#10 Du$ter $laves’ (Page 30) depicting asepcts of everyday life in Dubai.

With a touch of old-school chutzpah worthy of P.T Barnum, the world famous showman, Wheat attracted attention for his first exhibition by branding it ‘The Dubai Dollar Project’, with the hook of giving away $64,000 worth of art, whilst launching himself into the art world, un-invited.

‘Follow your inner moonlight; don’t hide the madness’ – Allen Ginsberg

“It's not enough to sell; you've got to entertain the customer.” – P.T Barnum

His whimsical visions are designed to make the casual observer think; some times amusing, some times provocative, but always worth a look. Most of his pieces have personal meaning and some of them reveal some of his innermost thoughts and feelings. Wheat described this series of works as both light and dark in nature, an assemblage of his day to day experiences, both good and bad, exploring diverse themes.

Visitors to the exhibition were encouraged to immerse themselves in his work by selecting their favourite artwork from ‘The Money Collection’. All were invited to fill out dollar project ballot slip, to enter a free prize draw. The only condition was if they were drawn out to of the ballot they colud win one of the 28 hand embellished prints, valued at $1,400 each in exchange for a signed $1 bill. The samle applied to win the Masterpiece, #28 ‘Indulgen$e’ (Page 47)

Although there's often a quirky and humorous feel to the works, his more profound intention is to encourage people

dollarsandart The Dubai Dollar project proved the perfect vehicle to showcase Jim’s intriguing Money Collection installments. Jim gave away some of his work, valued at $64,000 to the people of Dubai, thanks to his ‘all or nothing’ approach that we applaud. All hotel guests, visitors and the community at large were encouraged to choose their favourite Money Collection piece and claim it in a free ballot. This ensured people really looked at the works as this bold, ground-breaking project went from strength to strength. At the Media One Hotel, the Dubai Dollar Project inspired visitors and guests to think about following their passion, and helped make art more accessible via hanging it in a very public place. All visitors were encouraged to take photos, use social media channels and to tell their friends about the project, in a bid to encourage them to think about what the dollar means to them. Jim certainly acheived that. - Media One General Manager Mark Lee.

Winners : 28 x $1,600 print in exchange for a $1 bill

At a closing cermony, on 1st June 2013, each lucky winner presented Jim with their $1 bill in exhacnge for their signed, silk screen print. Despite weeks of trying, Wheat manged to personally track down 22 of the winners from the 28 who accepted their prize at a special closing cermony. The winning signed $1 bills were then incorporated in the final piece of art - “CLO$ING - DOLLAR$ & DIRHAM$” (Page 22) and is now curated at The Track, Meydan Hotel, along with other selected artworks.

Wiith 28 hand embellished unique variations of each artwork valued at $1,600 each, along with The Masterpiece ‘INDULGEN$E’ (Page 47) valued at $20,000, the $64,000 of art raised the literal $64,000 question - would anyone enter the ballot and if so what would the winners do with their prizes! More than 1,500 draw entries were received and the prize draw was made at The Media One hotel on the 28th day of the show, giving people 30 days to claim their print, in exchange for the signed $ bill. The original Artwork ‘INDULGEN$E’ (Page 47) was claimed on the night and hangs in the winners apartment in Dubai to this day.

‘It’s the giving the makes one stronger, but sometimes the takling can make one weaker, if even vulneranle or blinding.’ – Anthony LiccioneDue to the popularity of the exhibition, the team at the Media One hotel allowed the show to go on, with selected Artworks up on the 8th floor for 8 weeks where the Artist gave private tours and sold some of the originals. Preparing The Money Collection

FINAL THOUGHT$ A time of deep loss, lonliness and frustration spurred Jim Wheat to turn to art to produce his initial works at his Sheikh Zayed Road apartment in Dubai. There they remained until a chance commercial commission encouraged Jim to share his work and this timely message.

What one can be, one must be Abraham Maslow Jim’s art gives an abundance to the variety of materials used to produce each piece, from money of various currencies and times, to the mediums of sand, clothes, household goods, resin and oils. What occurs is a blurring of the boundaries between the art, which is ostensibly free and money, which many of us are slaves to. Some view thes as a symbol of a rational and organised society where status if free to flourish. Others view it as a dark mechanism of control, an illusionary image printed on paper much like a fine art print itself.

Money isn’t everything but it ranks right up there with oxygen Rita davenport Jim Wheat [235x330].indd 18

As money is an expression of value so is art. To possess art is in a sense to possess money that accesses a sense of an artists attitude and personality. Jim’s $ Art concept is about preserving and capturing the moment, not consuming through the constant changing of hands. Artwork associated with the $ carries extra meaning. On the surface, manipulation of currency in any form, even a simple doodle is a form of rebellion. The deeper you go, the narrative gets richer, raising questions about society’s value of the $ and what it means to each person.

Too many people spend money they earned, to buy things they don’t need, to impress people they don’t like Will Rogers From an art collector’s point of view this raises many questions and ultimately points to the trickiness of the art market. The fine art marketplace Is complicated if you don’t know your way around often full of products that look like original art but are in fact reproductions. The sale of art comes 18 up against the fallacy of art and the fallacy of money. For this reason nothing is set in stone or on canvas and

The markets for the various type of art differ due to factors like stability, longevity, supply, demand, how accomplished the artisit is, how broad collector bases are, fashion and what art ‘experts’ do and say. This original, unqiue art from the heart challenges these obstacles, regardless of the outcome with the therapy being in the artistic process from blank canvas through to the closing of the next exhibition. Art and money exist can have a profound effect on the lives of people the world over and neither should be dismissed as one. A consideration of the link between the two is, however of great use to the collector and artist alike. When Jim boldly combined the symbolism and meaning of money with popular culture and the icons that embody it, the options for his new found expression became endless.

Wealth is in ideas, not money Robert Collier

Jim will carefully consider private and corporate commissions provided that

Joining Jack The overarching theme of the Dollarsandart brand is Art that tells a story, often through the relationship between money and happiness. Upon hearing about Joining Jack through Andy Johnson — founder of Joining Jack, a UK-based charity working towards finding a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Jim wanted to help. It gave the whole collection more of a purpose and much-needed validation. Andy, his wife Amy and their son Jack were staying at the Media One Hotel, when Andy first noticed the art. I found the art very interesting. With the charity, we want to get as wide an appeal as possible. Supporting the charity via art is something we hadn’t thought of. It’s great to have a new idea, especially coming from someone with as much enthusiasm as Jim, said the fundraising father, a former Wigan and Castleford Rugby League player. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy affects one in every 3,500 boys worldwide. Some 20,000 new cases of this currently incurable disease are reported each year in the developed world. ‘‘ When I heard Andy Johnson talking about ‘Joining Jack’ recently at a lunch in Dubai and the plight of those with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, it really hit home for me, ” said Jim. Jim pledged 10 per cent of the profits from his art sales to this worthy cause during 2013 & 2014, whilst suppporting the legendary James Gosling and Mark Jones Gentlemans lunches. Celebrating this, Wheat decided to literally peg 11 x AED 1000 notes to a ‘Falling $’ artwork, presenting it to Andy at the December 2014 fund raiser at Media One. He went on to sell ‘Falling $’ for a further AED 7,000 at the auction that night. The following year, Wheat was the succssful bidder for a signed Saracens jersey featuring an Owen Farrell $ bill. Entitled $ARACEN$, the original in now housed in the U.K.

Pool Art – It’s Pool Time THE $TORY

COMPONENTS

RU$TY

BELIEVE

Originally installed at the TECOM offices of LOWE MENA to start their summer pool league. This artwork now takes pride of place at the QUBE, Meydan. The work encourages the flow of talent around the pool table to focus on the job in hand and concentrate on potting those balls.

Encased within the art are coins from the artists’ travels, together with some implements designed to help or hinder your game of Pool at the QUBE. If you visit the place please do look closely at the Artwork and see if the dates and numbers captured mean anything to you.

Central to the Artwork and often overlooked is a can of WD-40. This is a testament to those of us who, when challenged to play pool complain of “being a bit rusty” or “it’s been a while” as they proceed to clear the table.

WD-40 means ‘Water Displacement, 40th formula’ as it took them 40 attempts to get the formula right before it became the success it has. The message here is to never give up and believe — you never know how close you are to success.

The INTERGALACTIC$ Showcased at The Media One Hotel 03rd – 30th March 2013 The 2nd Dubai $ Project ‘We live in a disposable, “cast off and throw away ” society that has largely lost any real sense of permanence. Ours is a world of expiration dates, limited shelf life and planned obsolescence. Nothing is absolute’ – Myles Munroe

In March 2014, Wheat returned to the Media One Hotel to showcase his “INTERGALACTIC$” for his second Dubai $ Project. He not only delivered 28 originals, but a couple of marketing masterstrokes help gain even more recognition in a truly unique way. Beneath the Marketeers whistle, bells and space dust, was a deep exploration into nostalgia, technology and science fiction. Building on the influence of the dollar – the prevailing motif in all his work – he provided an exploration into some of his favourite themes - science fiction, technology and nostalgia - and how they have all been affected and challenged by commercialisation.

On the opening night, #1 $PECTRUM ON ONE (page 58) featuring the original ZX spectrum 48k with rubber keyboards, fell off the wall damaging the frame. Rather than have the work whisked off and the frame replaced, Wheat boldly removed all the glass from the frame, returned with a sealant adhesive and hung it back on the wall. Wheat stated, ‘this was from an era where we fixed things of value, rather than just replace them’ thereby validating the whole ethos of the exhibition.

‘What are offers is space – a certain breathing room for the sprit’ – John Updike

SCI-FI CONTRASTS

In a study of consumerism and overconsumption, Wheat littered this collection with sci-fi references and discarded technology. Using old mobile phones and computer hardware to illustrate how all three themes have been subjected to commercialism in a throw-away society. One where dreams of yesteryear have become a reality, but we are left to pose the question, have those dreams become a nightmare as technology markers?

Other science fiction gems were showcased within The INTERGALACTICS collection, such as #20 $tar War$ light (Page 74) featuring a skipping rope and a protein bar and #21 $tar War$ Dark (Page 75) featuring a shisha pipe and cigarettes. An initial light hearted approach that ultimately forces us to think about our life choices. The combination of retro-technology, nostalgia and how they have all been affected and challenged by commercialisation. #10 Pla$tic A$tro $pace food featuring Jabba the Pizza Hutt to #26 ‘Flash the Cash, Johnny’(page 78) both sold on the opening night. He cleverly managed, yet again to reveal elements of his personal journey from a world where little was known of technology or space travel, to today where technology has made the dreams of yesteryear a reality.

NOSTALGIA Works like #2 $PACE INVADER$ (page 59) featuring the original Atari 2600 (the 1970s home video console, more akin to a piece of furniture) and the perennial dollar sign in acrylic paint. This time interspersed with an old computer cable, with both mediums overlapping an alien spacecraft that arrives centre stage in a shower of space dust primary yellow. Ironically, the word Atari comes from a Japanese verb meaning “to hit the target” and in this piece and many others like it, that’s exactly what Wheat does. This space-themed retro collection drew inspiration from his childhood – from early home computers, film, TV and technology. It spoke to many Western expats, who although they miss home and the fond memories of childhood, are now immersed in the instant, have-it-right-now society.

dollarsandart “There are uncanny parallels between the Alienware brand and Jim’s philosophy for the INTERGALACTIC$ exhibition. Exploring the relationship between physical and cyber reality in such an immersive way is a common theme of the Alienware experience and this 28 space related dollarsandart collection. With Jim’s use of augmented reality in art, we see these lines increasingly blurred in a gaming and artistic sense. Working together to integrate Alienware into the Middle Ea$t $pace Raider$ masterpiece has been a real highlight. “It is great to support such a talented and passionate artist as Jim,” - Pearce Clune, Director – Category Management, EMEA Client Solutions, Dell EMEA Emerging Markets.

‘A good fragrance should have a certain personality that makes people identify the scent with you.’ - Shakira

AUGMENTED REALITY Middle East Space Raiders had a unique technology-driven element – it was augmented reality-enabled. Using an augmented reality (AR) app downloaded on their smart phone from local AR firm Ogle. Visitors could watch the art come alive, in a unique video clip, simply by holding their Ogle AR-enabled smart phone over each piece – almost meeting the Artist himself!

INTERGALACTICS FINDS NEW SPACE When the INTERGALACTIC$ had finished, rather than draw the masterpiece complete with the Alienware, a new journey began for the remaining art installations. The space cowboy curated #28 MIDDLE EAST SPACE RAIDER$ at Jumbo Electronics, in the heart of Mall of the Emirates, underlining Jim’s philosophy of making his art accessible to as many people as possible.

‘ It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity’ – Albert Einstein

A smart move which kept the exhibition alive for a further 3 months and gave shoppers the chance to enter the draw. It was very apt, with the collection involving technology – from some of the earliest home computers to the latest, state-of-the-art Alienware from Dell – finished off in a retail store.

DELL ALIENWARE The masterpiece of the INTERGALACTIC$, #28 entitled ‘Middle East $pace Radier$’ (page 79), celebrated the announcement that the U.A.E would explore space by 2017. In the typical Wheat style, what better than a childhood twist to the art by adding a packet of his playground favourite crisps ‘ Space Raiders’?

Pearce Clune, Director, Dell EMEA Emerging Markets, says: “Jumbo Mall of the Emirates is a great retail destination and they attract a lot of loyal Alienware customers. It was a great opportunity to showcase not only Jim’s ground-breaking art, but the ground-breaking technology we incorporate into our Alienware gaming machines. One very lucky person will have the opportunity to win one of Jim paintings as well as a top of the range Alienware M18x”

A vinyl record called ‘Space raiders’, together with a tide label from a washing powder brand and several barely noticeable British 1 penny pieces from the early 1900s. For most Artists that would be enough – given that the original was again up for grabs in the draw – not Wheat though. The month prior to the show was spent dismantling a top of the range Alienware M18x, a top of the range alienware and working it into the masterpiece.

THE STORY CONTINUES

NOT TO BE SNIFFED AT

The Original #28 MIDDLE EAST SPACE R AIDER$ (Page 79) and Alienware remains unclaimed and has since moved on to be curated at The Meydan Hotel.

The INTERGALACTIC$ exhibition not only gave visitors a visual and tactile feast; but exclusive perfumier Fragrance Du Bois added an olfactory element to the exhibition. Fragrance Du Bois CEO, Dean Henry, explained “Jim’s art is a unique experience, akin to our ‘Shades Du Bois’. A bespoke perfume creation experience, in which the clients’ moods and desires are matched to colour and fragrance, allowing them to sample and discover a personalised custom-blended scent. We are all about creating signature scents from 100%, natural, sustainable Oud. Jim seems to be all about providing 100%, natural fun with his art!”

The prize draw is planned when the time is right and the planets align.

ART COMMISSION

Infinite PO$$IBILITIE$

Open frame dimension: 90cm x 90cm Acrylic on canvas based on the outcome of 96 tee shots

The Story behind ‘Infinite Po$$ibilitie$’ This fully collaborative artwork, painted on the 2nd hole of Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club during the Visa infinite golf day, was designed to engage with every participant. Each of the 96 players tee shots, all with their expectations, golf swings and infinite possibilities got into the spirit of this activation. As the 24 groups of 4 played their tee shots from 1pm this representation was painted depending on where their ball came to rest. Core colours and outcomes were green for a grass landing, blue for water, red for danger, orange a disaster and gold for sand. Infinite Po$$ibilities was completed at 5.50pm, just as dusk fell - all participants got into the spirit of the day and were curious to learn how the masterpiece would look with their art contribution which was presented during the gala dinner. A great event that harnessed the power of art and the ‘Infinite Possibilities’ that golf brings, like life itself. The winner of the ‘nearest the pin in 2’ was presented with the limited edtion print of #26 ‘Golfer$ Ca$h’ from The Money Collection (Page 44)

BACK IN THE U$$R (1961 - 1991) Showcased at The Anantara, Palm Island 5th November – 2nd December 2014

‘Russia is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma’ – Winston Churchill

A RUSSIAN EXIHIBITON IN DUBAI BY A BRITISH ARTIST? Some years ago, Wheat had visited Russia in an attempt to climb Mount Elbrus, the dormant volcano located in the western Caucasus. The group failed on the final day due to extreme weather conditions, agreeing that the mountain will always be there and maybe oneday he would conquer Russia in another way. Little did he realise he was to conquer the hearts and minds of the Russian Community in Dubai through his art.

PEACE BRU$HE$ THE NATIONAL DAY OF THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION Within 4 weeks, his now Russian comrades were proudly displaying #12 RIOT$ (page 32) and #21 DEVICE$(page 39) from The Money collection garnering interest from those who visited their office. With the National day of the Russian Federation rapidly approaching, they commissioned Wheat to ‘paint whatever he wanted’ to present to the Russian Consulate General at the celebrations planned for 12th June 2014.

Wheat realised how ignorant he was to Russian Culture in terms of politics, media, money and his understanding about what had been sacrificed in the second world war. It bothered him and stayed with him. Surfacing a decade later at a chance meeting with Vladimir Burden at a boxing press conference in Dubai, where the pair were introduced.

Rather than cover a Matryoshka doll in dollars, Wheat opted to create an original entitled ‘Peace Bru$he$’ (page 103). With peace in mind, he fixed various sizes of paint brushes onto the artwork in the shape of the dollar sign in the cold wall colours of deep red, dark blue and white and the obligatory splashes of gold.

Not only was sport a common ground for the pair, it was art aswell. Vladimir was the man behind several media and sporting initiatives in Dubai. What started as an exchange of business cards, led to Wheat being interviewed at his Art Media offices the following day to explain a couple of the originals from his Money collection. During the interview he was asked what he knew about Russia and if he had any desire to could explore it any deeper.

Barely 4 days before the Dubai event, Wheat was commissioned to produce ‘a similar’ original for the Consulate General in Abu Dhabi. He rapidly went to work, being honoured by local dignatories and the Russian community as ‘Peace Bru$he$’ were presented on stage.

Dre headphones to represent the future. In the top right Vladimir Lenin, the Russian Marxist revolutionary, takes the place of John Lennon in an inspired double entendre worthy of Sir Paul himself. (let’s not forget that McCartney wasn’t really singing about actual ‘snow peaked mountains’ and ‘balalaika’s’ when he wrote his sensational, Chuck Berry & Beach Boys inspired nod to Soviet culture ‘Back In The USSR’ in 1968, on the Beatles ‘White Album’).

FROM COMMISSION TO FULL COLLECTION : BACK IN THE U$$R Ensuring the initial commission wasn’t a fluke, Wheat insisted on digging deeper, conceptualising and finalising his ‘Back in the U$$R 1961-1991’ exhibition during the summer of 2014. Inspired by the art-friendly décor, popularity with the Russian community and the energy around the Anantara Hotel. It was deemed the perfect venue to bring Dollarsandart to Palm Island for the first time.

His trademark dollar sign took centre stage in an almost violent cadmium yellow, that joins up with the similarly toned communist emblem, the hammer and sickle outlined in cadmium tube red to represent the straightforward work ethic of the Soviet era. A symbol conceived during the Russian Revolution, but nowadays consigned to the clouded tapestry of history.

A powerful combination of the revered $ symbol, together with subtle triggers from the soviet era 1961 – 1991, giving the public time to dig a bit deeper into this rich and colourful culture. One of the crowd pullers was the vibrant and boldly deconstructed #5 LOVER$ & FIGHTER$ (page 90) Powerfully splitting the darkness of war with the purity of white hung in the balance by a Russian war medal. Several 40 somethings were drawn towards #2 BRAINY RUBIK$ (page 87), featuring the deconstructed Rubiks Qube, again back to the Artisits childhood in the North West of England. in the early 1980’s. Wheats vision in this particular painting, might well have been inspired by the cultural divide between east and west during the Cold War. The political and military tension was certainly evident during the 1960s when The Beatles were officially derided in the USSR as the “belch of Western culture” and even as late as the 1980s when Sir Paul was still being refused permission to perform there. Whilst Wheat wasn’t refused permssion to exhibit at The Anantara but one senses a great shame that people didn’t take the opportunity to dig deeper into this bold collection after the opening night.

In a typically humorous play on words, Wheat christened one particular work , #1 Lenin & McCartney (page 86). In the top left hand corner of the painting, Sir Paul McCartney, the Beatles bass player, wearing a pair of on-trend Beats By

ICE HOCKEY LEGENDS It could be argued, that the crowning glory of ‘BACK IN THE U$$R’ was #10 ICE HOCKEY LEGEND$ 1972. Honouring Soviet and Ice Hockey legends, Boris Mikhailov & Mikael Petrov, legends from the 1972 summit series where the Soviet amateurs travelled to Canada to beat the professional team against all odds. The pair flew to Dubai, to witness ice-hockey on the sand and to sign the Goalies glove on this original artwork at the Anantara. ‘Art is a microscope which the Artist fixes on the secrets of his soul, and shows to people these secrets which are common to all.’

throwback to the early 20th Century Fauvists. Like Matisse, Rouault and André Derain who’s painterly styles and emphasis on strong colours were diametrically opposed to the more representational and realistic values retained by Impressionism. Wheat’s mixing of acrylic paint, sand and signing currency is a good example of someone unafraid of breaking the established rules. ‘ You can’t change the world without a certain amount of healthy willingness to break the rules.’ – Sebastian Thru

– Leo Tolstoy

FIT FOR BUSINESS

With the ice hockey community in Dubai becoming more aware of dollarsandart. The Dubai Guerilla$ Ice hockey team are now well and truly making their unashamed mark on the circuit. Playing in the leagues oneday hoping to rise up and catch The Mighty Camels, 2016 champions of The Emirates Hockey League.

Wheat’s association with the dollar, led to him being honoured as Arts & Culture Ambassador of Fit for Business. A private online business club built on sporting values with a strong entrepreneurial focus.

WHAT RULES? In his magnum opus, “Blue and Yellow don’t make Green”, Michael Wilcox talked extensively about the colour bias of paint. Untangling many of the ambiguities, myths and mysteries fundamental to the more traditional ways of working with paint. In doing so, he reconstructed the art of mixing colour from a haphazard affair, into a thinking process where thoughtful decisions could be made. Paradoxically, it could be said, that many a groundbreaking artist haven’t followed the rules. Wheat, with his bold use of primary tones and non representational colours , might easily be thought of as a

Founder Liam Mooney says: “I love Jim’s raw passion and contagious energy in all that he does and has really opened my eyes a refreshingly different attitude to art. His collaborations with the sport celebrities goes hand in hand with what Fit for Business is about and his sprit reflects our motto of ‘courage & wisdom.’ Jim’s collections to date have demonstrated that showcasing something refreshingly different that really makes you think ’. SAFE AND SOUND The majority of the 14 originals of the ‘Back in the U$$R’ collection is safely curated at INKAS vehicle security offices in Dubai Investments Park, Dubai where art tours are given, fingerprints sometimes taken and countless Russian baddy James Bond jokes are made, Mr. Bond!

Heroe$ & Villain$ Showcased at RIRA Gallery, DIFC 15th April 2015 then around Dubai until 1st June KEVIN PIETERSEN, UNITED While hosting the cricket legend Kevin Pietersen down at the The Track, Meydan Golf, where Wheat is the resident artist. He was inspired to create one of the pieces for this collection #14 Kevin Pieter$en (Page 114). Kevin himself, despite media belief, was genuinely humble and polite towards all the staff during his stay. Which in turn inspired Wheat further to create #13 Meydan Track $tar$ (PAGE 113). Honouring the two affiliates of 2014, those who ensured the golf clubs are clean, the course is maintained and happy to simply get their hands dirty. Wheat painted live at the premises, finishing the original off by incorporated a signed $1 dollar. Both works are now curated at Meydan Golf, The Meydan Hotel.

BOTH SIDES OF THE COIN Throughout 2013 and 2014, in an effort to celebrate success at all levels in life, Wheat made it his personal mission to “get up close and personal” with some well recognised people he met in Dubai. Over this time, he had an opportunity to involve a whole host of influential people from sport, entertainment and media, co-signing $1 and $2 bills as a part of an artistic collaboration. Wheat also initiated one of his most powerful social media campaigns ‘Making Hay while the sunshines’ #MHSTSS, focusing on the various foot soldiers of Dubai, ‘Providing them a voice’. It ran for 1 month honouring those who helped make the City tick from labourers, cleaners, construction workers and Damian the Sri Lankan Security guard where Wheat lives.

‘I’ve always been famous, it’s just no one knew it yet.’ – Lady Gaga During his days as a Commercial Manager in the golf industry, Wheat hosted the Manchester United team. Legend Ryan Giggs, himself Hero – Victim – Villain, presented him a designed Manchester United shirt along with the 20 signed $1 bills from the full squad. This was combined as one and featured as #8 in the collection ‘ Manche$ter United’ (Page 110) paying homage to one of the most recognisable and profitable sporting brands on the planet.

HERO : VICTIM : VILLAIN Wheat knew he needed a strong theme to honour these two extremes and to top his previous work. The collection was appropriately named the ‘Heroes & Villains collection’, focusing on its’ three main ingredients: the villain, the victim and the hero. ‘People are not born heroes or villains; they’re created by the people around them.’ – Chris Colfer

Wheat refuses to comment on who is the Hero Victim – Villain is in each of the 20 strong collection. In some cases, he experiences parts of the paradigm himself, relating it to his own situation. What does come out as the Hero in all of this, is the brand dollarsandart, with the virtue of this collection. Resonating with DIFC art afficionados, the celebrities themselves and of course, Damien the security guard in #2 $ri Lankan $piderman (Page 120).

He even managed to tell a story in this collection in a more profound way than previously. Having the audacity to curate #1 Top Trump$, Donald (Page 120) featuring the signed $1 bill of Trump alongside #15 Blue overall$, Waqaa$ (Page 121) painted live amongst the blue overalls on the City Walk Construction site. These two curated next to each other during the exhibition that were subequently bought by the same savvy collector.

FASHIONISTAS, THAT AL NOOR JACKET AND THE SILENT BRIDE House of Van der Haer Fashion Design and Image Consulting, partnered to style and design a much talked about ‘Silent bride’ who was escorted by Wheat on the packed opening night. They worked together to create excitement for their guests, walking around the gold Mercedes S Class, into the upper level of the RIRA Gallery. During the event, her AED 30,000 couture gown became a canvas for Wheat, as art met fashion. Wheat energetically delivered an abstract painting on the dress, with splatterings of peacock like acrylic dollars as the crowds looked on. ‘Fashion will get you noticed but style is what people remember’ – Charlotte Van Der Haer Wheats Van der Haer couture jacket from the event, along with artwork #11 ‘Al Noor for the eyes’ (Page 121 & 130) was auctioned off at the 2015 Noor Special Needs gala dinner, under the auspices of His Highness Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the U.A.E. and Ruler of Dubai. The artwork ‘Noor for the eyes’ and Wheats jacket contributing towards the $100,000 raised on the night.

THE 3RD DUBAI $ PROJECT The Heroes & Villains collection was showcased at the RIRA Gallery in the heart of D.I.F.C, with Mercedes Benz as the title sponsor for 5 days before scattering the collection around Dubai. This was a real coup in helping take dollarsandart from Hotel lobbies into the RIRA gallery, a hot bed of Middle Eastern and contemporary art, well respected in the region. It didn’t come without its challenges, but with focus and determination, they made make it happen. The Heroes & Villians exhibition really underpinned the essence of Dollarsandart. To celebrate life whilst exploring money and the affect is has on people. The collection included some of the most famous faces on the planet, counterbalanced it by recognizing the often ignored manual workers that helped make Dubai what it is today.

U.K CHARITY: FINDING YOUR FEET

‘Content is King, but context is Queen and she runs the household’ – Gary Vaynerchuk

Wheat completed a specially commissioned Bionic Woman ‘Finding your feet’ artwork, which was presented to the RIRA gallery. It was presented to DIFC based lawyer, Scott Hutton. Scotts sister, a quadruple amputee Corinne Hutton, set up ‘Finding your feet’ charity, to help those faced with a life-changing trauma or injury to find their feet in life again.

The vast majority of visitors tried their hand at doodling with the world’s first 3D printing pen, the 3Doodler. The device let them draw in the air, limited only by their own imagination with money on their mind inspired by the artworks around them. A free workshop and doodle bar was set up throughout the exhibition, which proved very popular. Visitors continued to ‘make money down in DIFC’ putting the onus of creation into the hands of the guests, Artists themselves on the night.

This bold original entitled #4 Hand$ & Feet (Page 120) , featured the finding your feet logo, pink $ daubed on a Scottish blanket, together with the bionic woman jigsaw from 1976 and a prosthetic hand of Corinnes. Two signed $2 bills were added by the artist, representing both the gift of our hands and feet.

THE SHOW WENT ON In typical Dubai $ Project style, the show went on for 10 weeks after the RIRA launch. The collection was showcased on the beach, at the Meydan hotel, up in Burj Khalifa, down at Tr!beca, presented at the Rotary club evening dinners and on various golf courses around Dubai.

‘We don’t develop courage by being happy every day. We develop it by surviving difficult times and challenging adversity’ - Barbara de Angelis Wheat then attended the 2015 gala dinner in Scotland, where a rare print of the original was auctioned off with proceeds going to the ‘Finding your Feet’ charity.

‘A Hero is someone who understands the responsibility that comes with his freedom ’ – Bob Dylan As the story spreads, these three dimensional collectables play their part in raising awareness of this wonderful diverse society that is Dubai. Each painting in the collections cunningly uses mixed medium that embrace nostalgia and money whilst challenging the superficial vs the sentimental. Whilst the extremes of ‘unsung footsoldier versus celebrity’ feed each other making Dubai the place it is, Wheat has wholeheartedly taken a risk to highlight the chasm that exists between the two, now cemented by the collectors who buy a piece of history

MAKING MONEY IN DIFC : 3DOODLER PEN Far from taking hands for granted. The ‘Hands and Feet’ artwork inspired Wheat to put an interactive aspect at the RIRA event. Guests had the chance to ‘create money’. Appropriate in the context of the collection and the surroundings of the Dubai International Financial Centre, home to elite bankers, brokers, lawyers and money makers.

The Story behind the artwork 'Manche$ter United' As golf is an integral part of dollarsandart, hosting the Manchester United squad for a couple of games in Dubai in February 2014 was very well timed. Not only were they hosted at a venue where Wheat previously worked on the commerical side but it was an inspiration to conceptualising the 2015 Dubai $ Project ‘Heroes & Villains exhibiton. The full squad, managed by David Moyes at the time, not only signed Patrice Evra’s shirt (who was due to leave the club and subsequently did) but also a $1 bill each along with the Artists signature. Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs presented the 20 signed Dollar bills from the squad taking time out in Dubai. The artwork includes signatures from David De Gea, Jesse Lingard, Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand, Chris Smalling, Ryan Giggs, Michael Carrick, And an Januzaj, Javi Fernández, Alexander Büttner, Marouane Fellaini-Bakkioui, Tom Cleverley, Jaun Mata, Shinji Kagawa, Antonia Valencia, Ashley Young, Danny Welbeck, Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney & Nemanja Vidic, some of whom remian at the club to this day.

dollarsandart New York, YOU York U.K Showcased at According to McGee, York, U.K 4th – 28th July 2015 PUTTING HIS HOUSE ON ITIn the summer of 2014, Wheat returned to the UK in order to make some tough financial and emotional decisions, that would allow him continue to follow his dream. Despite delivering 3 solo exhibitions, selling 16 artworks, several private commissions and preparing for his ‘Back in the U$$R exhibition. money was becoming an issue for the Artist. Decisions had to be made if this solo mission was to continue.

self-promotion. The pair had met socially a couple of decades earlier in Leeds when the Artist was studying Civil Engineering in nearby Nottingham.

He knew his now vacant house in Chester, U.K, which needed restoration work doing, could be sold to free up money. Having already invested all of his time, energy and money into becoming a bona fide Artist there was no turning back. He made the call and quickly found a buyer who requested 3 months to complete. Looking at this as an opportunity rather than a setback, Wheat used this space to create a complete 20 strong collection on the ground floor of his terraced house entitled ‘New York, YOU York’.

The name for the collection came from Wheat with the tongue in cheek reference to New York, where he’d ran the marathon in the year 2000, remaining one of his favourite Cities on the planet.

North of England born Wheat and his Dollarsandart deemed as ‘hot property in Dubai’, McGee was very interested in the International vibe. He knew Wheat had a strong presence on social media, celebrity collaborations and the makings of a strong brand.

‘I go to Paris, London, Rome and I there’s no place like New York. It’s the most exciting City in the world now. That’s the way it is’ – Robert De Niro The York based gallery had championed contemporary painting for 11 years. Integrating both areas of charity and money seamlessly well, with their charitable arm, New Visuality. Serving as the community outlet, using the paintings they exhibit to encourage creative responses from their disabled participants.

Wheat had mixed emotions returning to the now-empty and rather distressed terraced house, where he made a temporary 9 week art studio. In the space that he had once hoped would be his UK home he had to let go. Setting his stall out with colourful 1m x 1m acrylic on canvas #1 Falling Dollar$ (Page 154), a reference to not only his financial state at the time, but also his favourite season of the year : Autmun.

The official launch by dollarsandart patron, cricket legend and charity walker Sir Ian Botham helped hammer the opening day home. The dollar motif constantly depicted in Wheats art is less about bling, more about the good that philanthropy and donating to charity can bring about.

‘The home should be the treasure chest of living’ – Le Corbusier

GALLOPING ON WITH THE DOLLAR LAMA

During a lunch break and having a sweet tooth, he treated himself to some sweets called Dolly Mixtures. This got him thinking and inspired him to create #2 Dollar mixtures (Page 154). Using a half used can of bitumen paint he once used to waterproof the lower level of the external brickwork, he combined bitter with sweet. The symphony being bold, twirling spider webs of colour, with what appeared to be a trapped form of a human that the Artist referred to as Kevin Spacey, a reference to the 6 degrees of separation. He was so engrossed in this painting as the twirls continued that, with no breathing protection and limited ventilation through his ‘soon-to-bo-sold-house’ he collapsed. He has since vowed ‘never to work with bitumen agai’n or at least to open a window!

Included within the 20 originals showcased, was the tongue in cheek #11 ‘York race$’ (Page 155) retained by the Artist for his private collection a farcical look at a particularly unprofitable venture to York races. Having to rent a tie for the day for £10, which Wheat included in the original, along with his train ticket from Darlington and a gut-busting acrylic dollar, with a baby blue skyline to soften the blow. Quite a contrast to the bold orange oil on midnight blue acrylic masterpiece entitled #15 ‘The Dollar Lama’ (Page 155). Inspired by meeting the spiritual diety himself during a testing time in September 2008, in Dharmashala, India. The incomplete triangle of self–actualization, a clear reference to Maslows hierarchy or needs, revealing the artists interest in both philosophy and his obsession with burning incense whilst painting.‘

NEW YORK, YOU YORK COLLECTION 10 months earlier, Wheat had been approached on Facebook from Gregg McGee, owner of gallery According to McGee, with an offer to ‘combine empires’, testament to his online efforts of

I find hope in the darkest of days and focus on the brightest. I do not judge the universe’ – Dalai Lama

138 Jim Wheat [235x330].indd 138

3/7/16 01:32

dollarsandart

During the day, Wheat seized the opportunity of signed $1 bills from celebrities inspriing future potnetial collaborations, ‘Wealth is the ability to fully experience life’ – Henry David Thoreau

The gallery helped unpack Wheat’s angle on the dollar motif. His collection relentlessly unashamed of the positivity of using money as a force for good. Wheat’s show stopping #20 On the Golden Money bus (Page 153) boldly curated in the front window opposite Cliffords Tower, surprisingly remains for sale. The collection certainly got reactions - amusing some, irritated others and getting many people talking, trying to make sense of the art.

THE COLLECTION LIVES ON, FRANKLY, AT L’ESCARGOT, SOHO, LONDON Whilst 5 of the originals were sold as a result of the exhibition and one retained by Wheat, Summer 2015 offered a perfect opportunity for him to dig deeper in and around London. On the quintessentially cricket afternoon, he wasted no time in meeting a few of the artistic movers and shakers in the Capital. This lead to a long term residency at the oldest and most established French restaurant ‘Lescargot’ in Greek Street, Soho. London.

The opening, appropriately during the weekend of July 4th, 2015, Wheat & Botham co-signed a $1 bill and a £20 note, commissioned to celebrate the cricket legends 60th year summer birthday bash. Entitled ‘Red on Green Colourblind$’ (Page 156) the Artist focused on a lesser known fact about his patron, that despite being red and green colourblind, he continued to face a red cricket ball on green grass, overcoming his disability. ‘Acceptance of what has happened is the first step to overcoming the consequences of any misfortune’ – William James

Wheat was approached by filmmaker Terry Stone to collaborate on a special project, combining Art and Film. One of the meetings was held at the Arts Club, Mayfair. During the meeting, Wheat was inspired to literally paint their famous Spinach dish on canvas and presented it to the staff in recognition of excellent service.

SIR IAN BOTHAMS 60TH BIRTHDAY BASH This original commissioned artwork ‘Red on Green Colourblind$’ (Page 156) was auctioned off at Sir Ian Bothams birthday bash, supporting the charity Beefy’s foundation, held at the Getty Estate at Wormsley Cricket club for Beefy’s foundation.

‘May you live to be 100 and may the last voice you hear be mine’ - Frank Sinatra After a couple of meetings between Stone and Wheat, the opportunity of this special commission was revelaed. It was to celebrate what would have been the crooners 100th brithday, 12th December 2015. The core concept of Wheat’s was to morph the Benjamin Franklin $100 bill into Sinatra himself. Entitled Let$ be Frank (Page 158) it is based around the $ running around some original Sinatra Classic vinyl. On typically unique dollarsandart form, that told the story wonderfully well, alongside some powerful lesser-known hidden meanings connected with JFK. The original remains curated in the vibrant Searcys Champagne Bar, Kings Cross, London is a specially commission space. The Gallery Print Centre in Endell Street, London is the stockist of the limited editions prints with more collaborations expected in the future.

England’s most decorated cricketer, a Knight of the Realm who has raised millions of pounds for charity over 30 years and walked over 12000 miles, held a star-studded attendance for the occasion. What better than a cricket match with his select side taking on a Master Blasters Sir Viv Richards XI, featuring titanic tussles between Andrew Stauss, Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne and Piers Morgan. Lord Archer was an exceptional auctioneer, kindly signing the $ for Dollarsandart. ‘Red & Green Colourblind($)’ raised £4,500, bought by an Art collector who pipped Shane Warne in the bidding! Over £100,000 was raised for the foundation, including a signed Eric Clapton guitar finishing off with an intimate gig by long time pal of Sir Ian Botham - the one and only Eric Clapton (CBE)

The Story behind Red & Green Colourblind$ The Artist first encountered Beefy Botham when he was adorned on the back of the Shredded Wheat cereal boxes in early 1980s. With him being ‘Wheat’, fondly labelled as ‘Shredded’ by the kids (and teachers) in school this mockery soon became a compliment as the icon of cricket went from strength to strength. It was a real privilege for Wheat to support his 60th birthday bash donating the original ‘Red on Green - Colourblind$’ auctioned by Lord Jeffery Archer. The work paid homage to the fact of Sir Ian’s red / green colourblindness that he was only recently aware of. Living with a perceived weakness can often bring out the best in us as human beings - especially as making his living depending on the ourtcome of hitting a red cricket ball on green grass and overcoming that weakness. The star studded event showcased Beefy’s X1 versus Sir Viv Richards in a T20 style match made up of celebrities including Piers Morgan and cricketers Shane Warne, Matthew Hoggard and Darren Gough capped off with an Eric Clapton concert in the grounds of the quintessentially British Wormsely Estate raising over $170,000 for the Beefy Foundation. Sir Ian remains a patron of Dollarsandart and even lets Jim win at golf from time to time.

Let$ be Frank in London

Boxed frame dimension 100cm x 100cm Acrylic on canvas with rare Sinatra vinyl, a rare 1915 Wheat coin, signed Franklin $100 bill, Sinatra stamps, badge and a metal plaque from his spell inside. Now showcased for Sale at Searcys Champagne Bar, Kings Cross, London.

Story behind the Artwork ‘Let$ be Frank’ ‘Let$ be Frank’ was commissioned by Flim producer Terry Stone, to commemorate what would have been Sinatra’s 100th birthday 12.12.2015. The original artwork was unveiled in London at the film premier. The vibrancy behind the work reflecting the presence of the great man, as the acrylic dollar revolves around original vinyl hits including ‘come fly with me’ (dreamy), fly me to the moon (aspirational) and ‘My Way’ (original) that serve as the backbone for this Artwork. Hidden meanings are there for those who like to dig deeper within the work, linked both to the $ bill and JFK. Key components include a 1915 ‘Wheat’ coin, 2 x $100 bills morphing from Franklin to Sinatra, collectable stamps and old blue eyes himself during various phases of his life. The original is now showcased at Searcys Champagne bar in London in a specially designated board room for the Chairman himself with limited edition prints available upon request at: Gallery Print Center Service Point Covent Garden   81 Endell St, London WC2H 9AJ, United Kingdom Phone: +44 20 7836 9422 www.servicepointuk.com

More is Revealed Quickfire Questions & Answers

1. Where does your creativity spring from?

7. What about prints of your work?

My heart, the people I meet and memories from yesteryear.

There’s a selection up at The Tack, Meydan and the full works are avaialble online in both Dubai via Toil & Tinker and The Gallery Print Centre in London.

2. Who’s your favourite artist?

8. Art can take it out of you not just mentally but physically how do you take care of yourself?

Me! Oh, and Banksy. 3. What’s your favourite piece of your own art?

Yoga helps as does spinning and brisk walks wherever I am. The diet often freefalls when it’s commisison and collaboration time and I need to re address that balance.

Whichever piece I painted last.

9. What about the dollar/money obsession? Where’s that from?

4. Why the Dollar sign? I first signed a $1 bill for my Mum, as a signed gift, back on 26th August 1993, when I was about to set off to study my Civil Engineering Masters Degree in San Luis Obispo, in California.

Seeing extremes of money throughout my own life and the positive and negative effects it can have. The dollar is the most recognised symbol of that and I love working with it in a unique way.

5. Have you always painted? 10. What’s your favourite format/ artistic media? No, I didn’t paint until 2010, but 1993 was that year in the U.S where I witnessed part of the promise of the American dream. Travelling around the West Coast whilst playing golf, Rugby, coaching soccer and attending classes whenever I really had to. Little did I know how significant this gesture would be a couple of decades later.

Initially it was squirting gooey acrylic or oil and forming a dollar symbol on a fresh canvas. Now I’m getting back into the construction chemicals I once sold in the form of resin with BASF Art floors. I’m also enjoying learning about the printing process aswell and what is possible there working with various mediums and processes.

6. Is your Art selling and for how much?

11. What is more important - The Art or the story behind it?

In stages, Yes. I’m determined to match the right Art with the most suitable buyer and whereever possible enjoy meeting them. The works in this book are for sale with prices varying from $1 up to $50,000 depending on the Artwork, the deal on the table and the person or corporation willing in invest in the story so far.

I’ll have to say both with equal measure. Both serve an equally important purpose, but must co-exist together, I love digging deeper through passionate narration, explaining what the works mean, their relevance and how they tie into modern day life is perhaps my ‘X-Factor.’ Often when people ‘get’ the story behind the art it’s often a Ah-Ha lightbulb moment.

12. Any highlights from the fruits of your labour?

17. Is the artistic life lonely?

I’ve enjoyed delivering bespoke commissions for my UK patron, Sir Ian Botham, the Russian Consulate General in Dubai and a couple of weddings and birthdays to ‘Celebrate Life’. Meeting such a broad variety of people from the likes of Donald Trump, Gary Player, Lewis Hamilton and Jordan Belfort the Real Wolf of Wallstreet, through to the unsung heroes of society such as the labourers of Citywalk.

Yes at certain times such as finalising a collection, delivering Art to a client and making calls without consulting anyone. I’ve found Social media validation helped in the initial sensitive stages of being accepted. The truth is some will get it some won’t and it’s best to treat both high 5’s and thumbs downs the same if possible.

13. Why should anyone invest in a piece of your art?

The Art world itself, generally. Let’s make people feel good about themselves, their creative expressions drop the intimidation and the air of superiority.

18. What do you dislike about the art world?

Well beyond the aesthetics; I think people should take my art into their homes and offices, to enable them to share the stories behind the work and make them talking points, to help make art more accessible. A wise investment in the early stages of my life as an artist makes the buyer part of the story.

19. What role does you have in society? To connect, to capture the times and to help others be the best that they can be.

14. What would you most like to be remembered for? 20. By the time Dubai host 2020 Expo what will you have acheived?

$ My zest for life and for giving it a go. $ Helping people feel good about themselves. $ Connecting good people with good people just because.

To have produced more meaningful work in our rapidly changing world. Working with technology more, discoering new materials in new environments. Selected private commissions that help put my work into the context of modern times creating my legacy. To continue working with sporting Icons, an Art Basel, Art Dubai with a couple of events further afield in the U.S, Russia and possibly even China. I’d love to paint an installation at the Dubai 2020 Expo and inspire others to take up Art.

15. Lessons learnt? $ If it’s too good to be true it usually is! $ There’s a big difference between someone showing an interest in my contact list rather than my work. $ Patience, really is a virtue

21. What would you most like to be remembered for?

16. Head or Heart?

My zest for life, sense of humour, helping others and for giving it a bloody good go.

Heart all day long -lead with your heart, that’s the key.

GREATWOOD AT MEYDAN HOTEL

Open frame dimension 120cm x 70cm Acrylic on canvas with diamond dust and supporters logos from 1.2.16 event

The Story behind the Artwork The $ixth The Greatwood 49er$ The sixth hole at The Track, Meydan Golf, proved the perfect setting as Art history was made for the Greatwood cause on Monday 1st February 2016. Having collaborated with the brainchild of the event, Mr. Dick Fear, this contemporary representation of the $ shaped hole captured the outcome of every tee shot that all 49 participants made on the day. The Artist recorded where each players tee shot came to rest on green grass then noted as green on grass, gold on sand, splash of blue for water, red on the path and brown in the woods. This fun format even lead to an over subscription of players, planned to be 12 teams of 4 with one group making up 5, totalling 49 players who participated. Poetic justice as AED 98,365 was raised doubling expectation of all that was achieved at the Gala dinner following the golf.. Given the fact the artist lived in San Francisco in the mid 1990's where his first dollar was signed and the significance of the gold rush, this is how it felt when the Meydan community pulled together for this wonderful cause.

Lewi$ Hamilton : Time & Money

Boxed frame dimension 70m x 80m Acrylic on canvas with signed Lewis Hamilton AED 100 and Scalextrics kit from 1977 and F1 tickets plus Burj Khalifa passes

The Story behind Lewi$ Hamilton Time & Money Having attended an inspirational evening with Lewi$ Hamilton, a couple of days before the 2015 Abu Dhabi F1, 25.11.2015. During questions from the floor, The Artist asked Lewis Hamilton if he wouldn’t mind signing the AED 100 note to honour his achievements. He duly obliged citing Wheat himself as ‘inspirational’ to the bemusement of the crowd as the public signing ensued. Adding this with the IWC & Mercedes Benz cap to an artwork from his private collection completing this Artwork prefectly. Featuring track and a lap-counter from mid 1970’s Scalextrics set, a time still held fondly together with track, Yas Marina, Podium lounge and the yacht passes from the event 2 years earlier. This rare work is the only one to date to feature differently dated bank notes during which both Time & Money changed for the Artist.

Onward$ & Upward$

indeed on canvas and the value of my work is ultimately what someone is willing to pay for it and the confidence they have in the art world, my contribution to it and in money itself.

What an exhilarating journey it’s been so far! Slowing down the Jimbo-Juggernaut of the creative process and sharing the five collections, collaborations and the story so far was very therapeutic and much needed. It was critical to draw a line in the sand* (and the dollars) to complete this catalogue of works to date, to get it all out as it were and in turn to try and put into context the last few years.

Factors like stability, longevity, supply and demand come into play along with how accomplished the artist is and how broad the collector bases are. I hope my work continues to challenge these obstacles, many thrown down by the art world and will march on regardless. The people I’ve met, places I’ve travelled to and collaborations I’ve crow-barred in and delivered have been a rich part of the experience as much as selling the art itself.

‘What one can be one must be’ - Abraham Maslow I’ve really enjoyed blurring the boundaries between art, which is largely free and money, which many of us are slaves to. Some view the $ sign as a symbol of a rational and organised society where status is free to flourish. Others view it as a dark mechanism of control, an illusionary image printed on paper like a fine art print itself. As we march on to becoming a cashless society I fear that ‘smelling the money’ may become a thing of the past, I sincerely hope not - it means so much when all our senses are activated rather than just the online version.

‘Money isn’t everything but it ranks right up there with oxygen’ - Rita Davenport What’s next, Jimbo? At the time of writing I’m enjoying a new form of canvas in the form of designer floors. The working surface just got bigger helping interior designers with creative solutions for the floors of their clients. Working with some of the most forward thinking brands in the world using resin to showcase their logo, staff and company colours in a powerful way is really appealing to help take it to the next level.

As money is an expression of value, so is art. To possess art in a sense is to possess money that accesses, I hope, a sense of my attitude and personality. Some works are structured, sensitive, measured and contrived others are cheeky, rebellious and excitable and outside the frame bordering on all over the place. Either way capturing the various stages of my development in each collection rather than ignoring it and cracking on with the next commission or project was essential.

With ‘A rt being accessible and affordable’ being a personal quest, the first dollarsandart print only collection is now gaining momentum. There’s a raft of community projects in the pipeline and with more approaches from Artists in the making looking for their first break I’d like to help make that happen for those with that ‘X factor.’

The association of the $ carries an extra meaning - on the surface the manipulation of currency in any form, even a simple doodle is a form of rebellion let alone signing a bank note in the name of Art. Dubai became my American dream if you will - a dream that didn’t turn out quite right but led me to the path of artistic expression. The deeper you go down the rabbit hole with the body or work the richer the narrative becomes, raising questions about society’s value on the $, what it means to each person and how we are conditioned by and for money.

‘Wealth is ideas, not money’ - Robert Collier I feel very fortunate to have discovered my purpose in life through Art that tells a story, through dollarsandart or is it dollars-and-art? It’s been a huge period of learning and sacrifice as I mature from the need for being accepted and pleasing people to a take-it-orleave-it freedom of creative expression. A sincere thanks to you for taking the time to read this and to everyone who has endured my enthusiastic and passionate ramblings to date as the journey thankfully continues.

‘Too many people spend money they earned to buy things they don’t need to impress people they don’t like’ - Will Rogers I’m sincerely grateful to the early adopters of dollarsandart investing and collecting in my work as I gate crashed the Artworld. Those who have helped me cut through the trickiness of the Art market going against the grain in many cases. Nothing is set in stone or
