It’s the Christmas issue! We are finally feeling festive and can’t wait to start our Christmas shopping! If you want to support a cause this season, Hope House have a Christmas campaign that needs your support (page 53) and is a reminder of how important our nearest and dearest are. Christmas shopping is never easy trying to find that perfect gift for that someone special, so there has never been a better time to change your approach to present shopping. Forget traipsing around endless national shops and spending hours browsing the internet, instead shop locally and find something extra special.
And
thanks to Heaven you don’t have to look far to find an amazing gift for everyone on your Xmas list.
As Deborah Mitchell explains:
“Ask anyone and they’ll tell you that men are always hard to buy for but we’ve made it easy for you to give that special guy something they’ll love this Xmas, thanks to our fabulous range of mens products. Men want to look after themselves, care for their skin and indulge in treatments so products and gift vouchers make for a perfect present.
“Heaven’s men’s range is complete with shave, shower and shampoo products as well as luxurious targeted moisturisers and skincare that make skin look amazing.
“Women can fake a flawless complexion with make up but for guys it’s much harder as their skin needs to be flawless looking naturally, that’s why our products and treatments are so popular because men are amazed by the results.”
Aside from the skin care range there’s plenty of in-salon pampering on offer too:
“Guys love our super relaxing back massages and facials, manicures as well as age-reversing natural muscle freezing treatments which smooth out the fine lines around the forehead and eyes as well as tackling the most stubborn frown lines.”
Of course there’s Heaven’s infamous Bee Venom products which not only boast a celebrity and royal following but are renowned for their age-reversing effect.
“Everyone loves our Gold Bee Venom which feels just like silk and thanks to its wonderful gold packaging makes for the most special Christmas gift.”
And for the more affordable anti-aging results Deborah’s Black Bee Venom is the ideal choice. “Made from African bees, the Black Bee Venom works to smooth away static lines by filling them out and works incredibly well alongside injectables to keep the face frozen for longer. It even improves the look of muscles too.”
There’s as new edition to Heaven’s range which everyone wants to get their hands on this Xmas: Collagen Drops. “Collagen is found in abundance in our skin when we’re younger but as we get older the amount diminishes – in fact, by the time we’re 50 we’ve already lost up to a third, and this can lead to a dry complexion and signs of ageing.
“Heaven’s Collagen Drops help boost lost collagen, thanks to their high levels of marine collagen. They also contain super skin-boosting hyaluronic acid, and together this helps promote healthy, shiny hair too and leave you looking – and feeling – fabulous. It’s the UK’s most concentrated daily dose - a mighty 10,000mg of hydrolysed marine collagen.”
Can I add Collagen Drops to my face creams?
“Yes, you can simply add a few drops to supercharge your favourite moisturiser or weekly mask.”
What makes Collagen Drops different?
“They contain no additives – you may find the drinks or sachets you have been using in the past contain bulking agents, fillers or sucrose. Instead, they are made from a skin-boosting combination of high-intensity marine collagen, vitamin C, hyaluronic acid and a small amount of glucosamine that allow them to be accepted by the body quickly. There’s also the addition of Biotin to help hair repair.”
4|It’s beautiful
Can they be used externally and internally?
“Collagen Drops are all about promoting inner and outer beauty; and their strength means you can squirt them directly into your mouth. You can add these natural superstrength supplements to a drink or food; or you can also apply directly – either massaged into your skin, mixed with your shampoo and conditioner or a few drops into your everyday moisturiser.”
Are they vegan?
“No, because they contain a marine collagen they are not suitable for vegans.”
especially those who suffer from acne, rosacea and eczema. It contains bark from the willow tree, a natural and organic alternative to aspirin.
“For all complexions, my Defiance plumps out fine lines, lightens pigmentation and prevents spot breakouts thanks to the addition of hyaluronic acid.
“Perfect for dull or damaged skin. Overnight Success Cream is packed with anti-ageing properties and oxygen to detoxify and replenish.
CHRISTMAS MINI MUST HAVES

Launched earlier this year, HolHealth is a new Health and Wellbeing service aimed at helping individuals to improve their lifestyle habits and mindset for happy, healthier lives. Health coaching is a relatively new concept for many but here is how it all works.
What is a Health Coach?
A Health Coach is trained in human behaviour, how the body works, communication and coaching skills, nutrition, and fitness. As a Health Coach, Holly Griffiths primarily works as a mentor to inspire clients to make positive lifestyle changes and is there to educate you to create real change in your health, by setting specific goals and ensuring that you stay motivated. HolHealth aims to empower
New Health and Wellbeing Service for Shropshire
(College of Naturopathic Medicine), is accredited within the NHS Personalised Care Institute and we are now seeing Health Coaches becoming part of GP practices up and down the country. I am hopeful that within Oswestry this will be available to patients very soon. As we know, early intervention can be instrumental in changing the course of many health issues. I believe it is important that we look at alternative solutions through diet, exercise and education - prior to medicationwhich will not only benefit the patient but also relieve pressure on the NHS.”
Coaching
There is no one size fits all and everyone’s needs are different for many reasons. Each plan is bespoke
“There is no one size fits all and everyone’s needs are different for many reasons. Each plan is bespoke and tailored to the individual client, working to identify any health concerns and goals.”
clients to create real change in every aspect of their life, including their diet, fitness levels, career, relationships, home environment and general wellness. Holly can assist with a range of health-related issues including weight loss, stress, digestive problems, blood sugar regulation and detoxification and is qualified to assist with the creation of meal plans, nutritional recipes, exercise and sleep routines, stress management plans and problemsolving strategies.
Holly said, “My particular qualification with the CNM
and tailored to the individual client, working to identify any health concerns and goals. Accountability is imperative and so having someone on your side to support, encourage and keep things positive and productive is the key to successfully reaching those goals.
Nutrition
“I am a firm believer in ‘what you put in, is what you get out’. Therefore, if you fuel your body correctly you will have the energy levels, and ultimately, the health that you desire. There is so much conflicting dieting information
out there, so I take a very stripped back simple and pragmatic approach to how we should eat as healthy, active individuals,” Holly explained.
Fitness
“I am a qualified Personal Trainer and therefore have the expertise to advise on the types of exercise suitable for someone (as a Health Coach would do) and also take clients through a full training program on a one-to-one basis. Having a personal trainer does not necessarily mean you will be standing in front of a mirror or lifting heavy weights in a packed gym! I want clients to feel comfortable first of all - this may be in the privacy of their own home, or in the private studio at Active8Gym, Oswestry, where I am based.
“For those wishing to start their health journey or anyone with a health issue they want to look into, HolHealth can help! My ‘whole health’ and holistic approach to wellness will help you reach your health goals in a sustainable way so that you achieve long-term health. Packages with me vary in terms of your requirement.
It may be just Health Coaching that is needed or perhaps a combined program of both Health Coaching and Personal Training,” said Holly.

Switch Up Your Skincare For Winter
by Caroline Louise Beauty and Makeup
As the seasons transition from Autumn into Winter, and the weather changes to become colder and wetter, we think nothing of changing our clothes to suit the conditions- pulling on an extra jumper, hats, scarves and gloves when we need extra warmth or a waterproof jacket and wellies when we need protection from the elements. But few people stop to give their skincare the same consideration.
As temperatures drop, wind and damp conditions become the norm and we turn on the central heating, our skin takes a real battering.
What tends to happen is the moisture barrier in the skin gets damaged and we suffer from something called ‘transepidermal water loss’ which can lead to the skin becoming dry and chapped. Central heating can make this worse as the dry heat also encourages the skin to lose water and become dehydrated. People with conditions such as rosacea or eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis may also find their conditions become more severe as a result of this.
The good news is that by using the right skincare products in the right season, we can protect, nourish and hydrate the skin.
Top TipS For YoUr Face:
Ditch the soap!
A nourishing, oil-based cleanser is the best way to wash your skin and keep it in tip top condition. Unlike soap, which is often very drying, a creamy oil-based cleanser will actually help to moisturise the skin whilst removing makeup, dirt and impurities. Contrary to what you might think, it won’t make you ‘oily’, and actually helps regulate sebum production.
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
As we switch to more hot drinks in the colder months, it’s easy to let your water intake fall by the wayside. Remember you should be aiming to drink 2-3 litres of
water a day. This will help everything in your body, including your skin. You can also ‘layer- in’ hydration on the skin using hydrating essences and serums which feature ingredients such as hyaluronic acid (which is actually naturally found in the skin and is able to hold 1,000 times its weight in water).
Nourish and Protect!
Investing in a good moisturiser and ideally a facial oil at this time of year is an absolute must! Seek out products which contain plant ceramides and cold pressed natural oils which will help provide your skin with essential fatty acids and antioxidants and help to prevent transepidermal water loss. Your skin will benefit from either using a richer moisturiser over the winter or by doing what I do - layering a lighter moisturiser with a few drops of a nourishing oil over the top. Finally, don’t forget that facial sunscreen is a MUST, even in winter months. It protects against UVA rays as well as the UVB and is the single best anti-ageing investment you can make in terms of your skin.
For more specific information on how to help your skin over the winter, get in touch and I’ll be happy to help.

New technology is a clear winner
Here at Duignan Phelps Optometrists we have a new type of high-tech instrument to help with the early detection of glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, Age-Related Macula Degeneration and other eye diseases. Studies show that this instrument may detect eye diseases earlier than conventional tests.
Our Optometrists state: “People are surprised when we tell them that 80% of blindness in the world is caused by what we call ‘back-ofthe-eye’ diseases such as Glaucoma, Diabetic retinopathy and AMD. The good news is that 75% of blindness is preventable with regular check ups and early detection.”
We can do a 3D scan of your eyes with our OCT instrument. Our Optometrists have been fully trained to perform the exam, which only
takes seconds per eye and does not require pupil dilation in most cases. This is incorporated into our already comprehensive Private Eye Examination for those patients that are entitled to an NHS standard Eye Examination, the 3D scan can be paid for privately.
Our Optometrists continue, “The trick with these diseases, is to catch them as early as possible, because often by the time a person starts suffering from symptoms, the disease has already progressed into an advanced and irreversible stage. The OCT can detect signs of diseases in their early, symptomless stages when treatment can be more effective in stopping the progression of the disease.”
A common misconception is that loss of vision affects only the elderly,
but some of these diseases progress very slowly over years and start at a relatively young age, so eye screening is important for everyone.
Another advantage of this instrument is that it records and saves the results, so that when you come back for your next Eye Examination, the OCT automatically compares the results to your previous results to see if there has been any change in the retina since the last exam.
SEEING THROUGH THE RETINA
Traditional examination of the back of the eye (the retina) involved looking for signs of change on the surface. Thanks to REVO-OCT we can see through the surface and examine all the layers of the retina. Being able to identify and monitor abnormality within these layers is essential for early detection and diagnosis of some of the major causes of visual impairment and blindness; meaning treatments can be made available at the earliest possible moment.

Established in September 2011, White Orchard is beloved by locals and tourists alike. Owned by Jennifer, and her husband, it is filled with all her favourite things: jewellery, handbags, scarves, unique gifts and greeting cards, as well as stunning artificial flowers and personal touches for the home. Before Jennifer moved to the UK she worked as a mental health counsellor specialising in addiction recovery. However, with her new life in Shropshire came a new career path. Jennifer said, “I worked in retail when I was younger and thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved helping our customers and was excited to rework our displays to showcase

new collections as they arrived. Fortunately, I’ve been able to draw on that experience, and the lessons learned in business school to start this new adventure.”
When asked about her customers,
Jennifer reflected on the generations of women who come in to buy gifts: “We often see three generations of women out together for an afternoon of shopping and lunch. I love it when young girls approach the till with little bits they picked out and want to buy with their pocket money. The smile on their faces when I hand them their bag of goodies melts my heart every time. I also enjoy helping men in their search for the perfect gifts for the women in their lives. The look in their eyes when they know they’ve chosen a gift their loved one will enjoy is priceless!”
When quizzed about her favourite things to order for her customers she said, “Honestly, I have a bit of an addiction to women’s accessories, especially jewellery and handbags. I am very particular in making those selections and I think our customers see that. Women really appreciate the quality and variety of styles we carry throughout the year.”

Triplets work as one
A team of talented triplets are hoping that their unique style of collaborative art will lead to them setting up their own full-time business.
Sarah, Rebekah and Rachel White, aged 22, who live together in Shrewsbury, are already selling their Art By Three artwork across the world but they dream of working together in their own artwork business.
The sisters moved to Shropshire 18 months ago from southwest London with their parents Richard and Karen White who now live between Shrewsbury and Telford.
The sisters discovered their artistic talent when they were in primary school and were taught by their grandfather, Alan White, who was a commercial artist.
But at the age of 14 the three discovered that they could more than triple their talent by working together on each piece of artwork making the most of their individual artistic strengths in one combined piece of work. They describe it as symbiotic collaboration.
Sarah explained that they worked together to produce a draft sketch of a piece of artwork and then each
sister worked on separate parts of the canvas, passing the work from one to the other.
“We all have an individual style and a collaborative style which works for the three of us together. As triplets we find that we are generally all on the same wavelength and that comes over when we are working together and can all draw on our particular strengths,” she said.
Their work ranges from wildlife and pets to landscapes, still life and portraits with the three working in all mediums including oils, acrylics, pencil and pastels. Most recently they have found that digital artwork particularly suits their collaborative style.
The triplets set up their Art By Three business in 2016 and quickly attracted interest through commissions and sales. They
were also featured on the Sky Arts television channel as entrants in the Landscape Artist of the Year competition as wild cards.
Now most of the triplets’ sales are as printed products through their website at or on Etsy at www.etsy. com/uk/shop/artbythree
Their work sells particularly well in America, but they have also sold originals as far afield as Australia. Their distinctive artwork is available in prints of all styles and sizes as well as greeting cards but also on products such as pencil cases, purses, clothing, cushions and stationery.
Since moving to Shropshire in April 2021, the triplets have been working with business advisers through the Marches Growth Hub Shropshire one-to-one specialist support programme. Experts at the growth hub have been helping them find new outlets for their artwork and fulfil their dream of making it a fulltime business.
“At the moment we all work four days a week as Nuffield Health booking agents, but we would really love to make our art a full-time business as professional artists,” said Rebekah.

When she’s not wobbling across the River Severn in a coracle or running half-marathons for charity, Chloe Hassall is a newly qualified solicitor at Lanyon Bowdler in Shropshire. We spoke to Chloe about her role, and what tips she has for getting into the law profession, as well as chatting about her energetic charity work!

I work in the firm’s Shrewsbury office, which is situated five minutes away from the weir. Having the opportunity to walk along the river and to sit by the weir on my lunch break is great. Shrewsbury is a fantastic place to live and work - it is the perfect blend of the city and the countryside, with plenty of restaurants and bars to visit in town but lots of nearby Shropshire hills to climb.

I had the opportunity to go to the Shrewsbury Flower Show for the first time this year and despite everyone melting in the heat it was really enjoyable. I also partook in the Macmillan coracle race in Shrewsbury. For those who don’t know, the coracle race is a relay race in circular boats - which are very hard to keep steady! The teams compete across the River Severn in fancy dress. The race was really fun, but I think it would have been a different story if I had fallen in!

Make sure you gain as much work experience as you possibly can, I would have liked more of an idea regarding the type of law I wanted to qualify into before beginning my training contract. Also try to keep an open mind, as I had a lot of pre-conceptions about the different areas of law, which turned out to be incorrect when working in practice. When looking for a training contract, make sure you do your research regarding things like the location of offices (you may be asked to relocate), specialist areas, size of the firm and so on. Do what’s right for you and do not settle. What has been your proudest moment (inside or outside of work)?

Bovis Homes offers a range of stunning properties right across the Midlands, offering 2, 3, 4 and 5 bedroom homes from first time buyers to those looking for their forever home. We are constantly reviewing our houses and ensuring they are everything that our customers want in a home, that’s why we are proud to have developed and launched our new range of homes and boast site managers that have won NHBC Pride in the Job Awards over three years in a row.
Our homes have been created to embrace modern designs and styling, whilst retaining the classic architectural traditions on which Bovis Homes has built its heritage and brand since 1885. An integral part of the design process for our new range of homes was to ensure they have a real wow factor and eye-catching appeal. From designing external elevations to creating attractive street scenes through to maximising the flow and size of the rooms, our homes include a variety
of features to capture the heart of the home. The size, positioning and number of windows in our new collection have created bright and airy homes, this mixed in with the higher ceilings gives your property a spacious feel.
The flow and layout of the new homes has been a key consideration to accommodate today’s lifestyles, with a focus on future living. With the kitchen at the heart of the home, impressive family spaces have been included to create spacious, sociable living areas, while attention to master bedrooms and en suites has given the homes added desirability.
On top of the unique specification of our properties, you can also use the Bovis Homes Select brochure to add even more finishing touches to your property, personalising your new home just the way you want it.
From upgrading your bathrooms with stunning ceramics, or adding smooth sliding wardrobes to your master bedroom, there are a wide
range of additional options and choices available. We also have a range of flooring for you to choose from that includes luxurious carpets, stylish Karndean, ceramics and vinyl. There’s also a choice of branded appliances for your kitchen as well as lighting and electrical upgrades.
Within our ecological developments we’ve been looking out for Britain’s best-loved creature these past few years, and we’ll be incorporating hedgehog highways throughout our developments. The highways have been designed to allow hedgehogs and other wildlife to wander freely and safely from garden to garden and to wider areas.
As announced by the HBF, Bovis Homes are a 5 star house builder, which means that over 90% of customers in a recent survey ‘would recommend their builder to a friend’. So, get in contact today by calling us on 01785 508 223 to speak to our friendly sales advisers about our upcoming development.

Yoga studio opens after pandemic
Jenna Blair is a yoga teacher and the beautiful practice of yoga is the love of her life! She opened Jenna Blair Yoga on Belle Vue Road, Shrewsbury in May 2021 following the pandemic - a once dilapidated office block, now a beautiful and much-loved yoga studio and wellbeing hub which is accessed by hundreds of people every week.
Like many people, Jenna was first drawn to yoga for its physical benefits - she was keen to keep fit and healthy and yoga was a form of exercise that she actually enjoyed! The practice improved her overall fitness levels, strength and flexibility but after starting to attend regular classes it soon became clear that the benefits were reaching far beyond the physical...Jenna found that she was happier, calmer and more content with all aspects of her life, her mood was lighter, negative habits were easier to kick and she knew that she had found something that she was always meant to find.
Jenna delivers multiple weekly Gentle Yoga and Yin Yoga sessions focussing on moving the body, using the
breath and finding time to relax. Her classes are very gentle in approach (as the name suggests) and they are suitable for beginners (as well as more experienced yogis!). Her vision is to offer as much yoga to as many people as possible.
Jenna said, “Our yoga studio and treatment rooms on Belle Vue Road are very special - it’s developed into a real wellbeing hub with an amazing community feel. All are welcome here.”

Christmas Mincemeat Slice
This delicious festive slice can be served warm as a pud with custard, thick cream or brandy butter or simply cool completely and serve instead of mince pies.
Makes: 12-14 slices Ready in 1 hour15 minutes, plus chilling and cooling
Ingred I ents
• 225g plain flour
• 165g unsalted butter, chilled and diced
• 1 egg yolk blended with 1 tbsp cold water
• 75g caster sugar
• 300g good quality mincemeat
• 50g ground almonds
• 2 tbsp flaked almonds
Method
• Sift the flour into a large bowl and rub in the butter with your fingertips until the mixture resembles very fine breadcrumbs (alternatively pulse in a food processor until fine breadcrumbs).
• Remove 100g of the breadcrumb mixture and cover and chill in the fridge. Stir 25g of the sugar into the remaining mixture, then stir in the egg and water and mix to a firm dough (adding a little more water if needed). Knead lightly then wrap in cling film and chill for 30 minutes.
• Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas mark 6. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 23cm square tart tin. Prick the pastry all over with a fork. Line the pastry case with baking paper and baking beans and bake for 10 minutes. Remove the lining paper and beans and bake for a further 5-7 minutes until the pastry is crisp and pale golden. Cool slightly. Reduce the oven temperature to 180C/160C fan/gas mark 4.
• Spread the mincemeat in the pastry case. Mix the rest of the sugar and the ground almonds into the reserved pastry crumb mixture and scatter over the mincemeat to cover completely.
• Return the tin to the oven and bake for a further 25-30 minutes or until the crumble topping is pale golden. Scatter over the flaked almonds and leave to cool before removing from the tin and cutting into 12-14 thin slices.

Christmas at
It has been a tumultuous few months for the country and for our customers and team. We have seen the prices of fuel, gas and food rise and done what we can to absorb the costs. Mel and Martin Board have owned The Haughmond since 2014, as well as their business this is their family home. In the last 12 to 24 months, they have seen the biggest upheaval in the hospitality industry. Through it all they have maintained the mission to deliver exceptional quality in food and service and at an affordable price. That price point has been tested in more recent months with the economic fuel crisis, Brexit and the Ukrainian war. Nevertheless, this is their family business, and they are nothing if not adaptable.
“Our team has grown, and we are now in a position to reintroduce our A la Carte menu, alongside our 6 Course ‘Tastes of The Haughmond’. We always want to give our guests the best experience and guarantee quality and consistency. We couldn’t do this without our valued team. We have Sam and Joe W, joining Melissa and Steph front of house. The restaurant team are embracing Haughmond hospitality, and any of them would be thrilled to recommend a cocktail or bottle of wine to make your evening unique. Starting in the kitchen we have Ross and Joe J joining Gareth, Ed and Al. Ross is returning to Shropshire from working in the Lakes and Joe has started his apprenticeship working in the kitchen alongside college.
“If you are looking for somewhere to celebrate with friends, family or colleagues, then enquire about our Group Bookings and Exclusive Use packages for seven to 30 guests. You can really indulge (and impress) this Christmas with our 6 Course ‘Tastes of The Haughmond’ menu, which can be tailored for a range of dietary requirements and paired with some exceptional wines.”
Over at The Village Store, Café and Bakery more has changed! Tanja, who has been working with the Boards for 18 years, has her dream bakery set up in the heart of the store. Freshly baked roll, loaves, focaccia, baguettes, and more are available five days a week and sell out fast. Pippa is behind the counter or in the kitchen preparing made-to-order paninis and seasonal soup, as well as taking bookings for afternoon-tea, groceries, and pre-orders for Christmas Hampers. The café has expanded with a conservatory to allow returning customers to sit and relax whilst others shop for artisan produce and giftware. You will be able to find a range of local and small business produce; from Winsbury Dairy, Hollowdene Eggs, Shropshire Distillery Gin, AppleTeme
Juices, Ludlow Nuts, to Hobsons beer. If you want to share your appreciation for all The Haughmond has to offer, then why not purchase a gift voucher for either The Haughmond or Haughmond Village Store (non-transferable). You can request a monetary amount or cover the cost of a tasting menu, bottle of champagne, afternoon tea, or a one-night stay. Together the team, led by Mel & Martin, envision a Christmas season worth celebrating. You will see a new Christmas menu arrive in time for December featuring Longner Hall venison, an estate 2.5 miles away from us, and Shropshire free range turkey. We are working again with Shropshire Distillery to bring you a Gin Evening and festive inspired cocktails. We are here so you can spoil yourselves for a night with a choice of seven bedrooms –each one uniquely decorated to give them personality and make your stay memorable. Ellesmere College hot-shots hit Commonwealth team target
Students from Ellesmere College have shot to stardom with a string of impressive shooting performances at national and international level.
And, not to be outdone, Ellesmere College Shooting Academy coaches Tom Rylands and Mark Parry have also been successful representing GB and Wales - winning several medals.
16-year-old Francine Gilmore and 17-year-old Anna Maughan have been regularly competing at national and international level and have won both junior and senior awards. Both were recently selected to represent England at the Commonwealth Shooting Federation championships, normally a precursor to the Commonwealth Games.
Mr Rylands said: “Ellesmere pupils past and present, as well as staff, enjoyed considerable success at the Commonwealth Shooting Federation European Division Championship.
“We are incredibly proud of them all and excited to see their development in the coming years.
“Anna was a bronze medalist in the ladies 50m prone rifle, Francine was a bronze medalist in the 10m air pistol, Old Ellesmerian Alan Bain won silver in the men’s 50m prone rifle with current Ellesmere rifle coach Mark Parry winning on the very last shot of the final!
“These are amazing achievements which reflect the talents and high standards of Ellesmere College Shooting Academy.
“Anna’s other successes this summer have included a silver medal in the women’s 10m air rifle and a team bronze and a team silver medal in the 50m prone rifle at the GB Junior International at Bisley.
“At the NSRA Bisley Centenary Shoot she won: The Anglo American Challenge plate (for the 100-yards weekend aggregate), the Samovar Trophy for Leading Junior in the 50m competition, bronze medal in the 100-yards week aggregate, and the
“She also won the David Allsop Memorial for the leading Junior Army Cadet and was placed third overall in the B class. She will move up to A class next year - a great achievement given her age.
“Francine finished the qualification round at the Commonwealth Shooting Federation European Division Championship in sixth place, with the top eight going through to the final - turning in a tremendous performance to finally take the bronze medal - considering she is still only 16-years-old.
“She was then selected to be in one of the two England pairs teams for the Saturday competition. Both England teams came through to the final four with Fran and her partner Matt Reed successful in winning the bronze medal.”
Alumni Alan Bain represented Great Britain against the USA in the Pershing Trophy while Mr Rylands travelled to Canada with the GB team and won several competitions. He also shot against Canada and USA in all three major matches, winning two out of three.

Harrys healthy eyes
Harry took his body a bit for granted – it all seemed to work ok and it felt like it would always do that: he hadn’t even thought that his eyes could go bad.
It started in his left eye first – just like a bit of grit in it at bedtime but, he fell asleep quickly and forgot about it. The next day both his eyes felt a bit gritty, but not bad and he just went to school as normal. “What’s wrong with your eye?”, said one of his friends, “It’s gone a bit red.” Harry looked in a mirror and he could see some red lines on the white of his eye but not much. Even his Mum and Dad didn’t seem to notice that night. Then he woke up – and couldn’t open his left eye at all! It was stuck! This runny yellow stuff was all over his eyelids and seemed to have glued his eyelids together. That was scary – he ran into his Mum in a bit of a panic “I’ve got glue in my eye,” he said anxiously, “it won’t open at all!” His mother sat up in bed, took a look, and then said, “Follow me.”
She boiled the kettle which Harry found a bit unsettling – where was this boiling water going he thought. Harry was pleased to see she let it cool and then, with a bit of cotton wool, she bathed his eye and wow, it opened. That was a relief but now he found out his eyes felt like they were both full of grit like mad. “It’s not grit,” said Mum. “You have conjunctivitis – your sister had it when she was smaller. It will go in time but warm water and cold compresses will make it feel better. Don’t worry, it’ll be all right.”
Well, that was fine for her to say – she didn’t have half of Borth beach in her eyes! There was only one saving grace – Mum said his sister had to stay off school for a few days as it was
very infectious. This was good, but adding insult to injury she then found out the advice had changed and he could go anyway. Sandy eyes and school – life was not fair!
Later he found out that he was to be treated like an alien too. He had to have his own towel separate from everyone else, his own flannel, he had to wash his hands all the time and, worst of all, he got told off for rubbing his gritty eyes. Even his pillow had to be specially washed.
He looked up conjunctivitis on the net. It was pronounced kun-junk-ti-vitus! The conjunctivae were the front coverings of his eyes and it came from a Roman word meaning coming together –it should have been sticking together he thought.
Mum was right. It only lasted a few days although he read that some people need a special ointment or drops to get rid of it. That was if it was particularly bad with lots of pus! Or that it went on for two weeks or more.
This all made Harry think: How should I keep my eyes healthy? Apparently eating various vegetables helped along with “oily fish”. I thought all fish were oily he mused but apparently not. He didn’t intend to smoke, which was bad for your eyes and it also said he should have eye checks which he did – and they were actually quite fun with goggles that make him look like a racing driver. Perhaps the one thing he might change is how long he spent looking at screens - apparently taking a break every 20 minutes was a good idea – looking at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds didn’t seem too much to ask. Harry was going to see (spot the joke he thought) that his eyes were going to last a lifetime.

A former Shropshire farmer has turned his farming tales and adventures into a series of richly illustrated children’s books that are designed to be fun, easy to read and help youngsters develop a love of reading.
Peter Russell Peake has brought out three series of books regaling humorous farm capers and calamities with loveable characters based on many of the animals and farm vehicles that were part of his farming life.
The stories have been brought to life with vibrant illustrations
by international children’s book illustrators Jeremy Pyke and Kirsteen Harris-Jones.
The books include the Farmer James series and Robbie The Farm Ranger series, aimed at children aged up to eight, and storybooks and alphabet and counting books for younger children. Three beautiful Christmas books have also been released.
Peter farmed for 40 years, including 30 years running the family farm at Halfway House, Shrewsbury. It was the UK’s largest free-range egg producer in the 1970s with deliveries to major cities, London and Harrods. By the 1980s Peter was also farming pigs and sheep and growing crops.
Characters are inspired by some of his favourite animals and farm vehicles – from Wellington the pig and Defa the sheepdog to Fergie, Peter’s 1958 red Massey Ferguson tractor that he still drives today
The books have been published by Marche Tales and are available from the website marchetales.co.uk or from various shops and fairs.
Marche Tales will be at the Much Wenlock Christmas Fayre on Saturday December 3 and the Shropshire Festive Gift Market at St Mary’s Church, Shrewsbury, on December 10 and 11.

Freya’s Story
A family have shared the story of 16-month-old Freya, who was born with a life-threatening condition, to help raise money for Hope House Children’s Hospice’s Christmas campaign.
When Georgie and Ben Bridgwater first arrived at Hope House, they were beyond exhausted.
Their baby daughter had been born with a life-threatening condition and they were emotionally and physically drained through trying to cope alone at home.
“Everything had been fine during my pregnancy and Freya was born a week after her due date weighing 9lbs 2oz, but it was clear something was badly wrong,” recalled Georgie.
“She showed no signs of life at first, but they managed to get her heart started which was a huge relief. Within hours after birth, she was taken away by ambulance to another hospital to receive treatment for severe Hypoxic-Ischaemic Encephalopathy (HIE) due to her brain not receiving enough oxygen.
“For 72 hours they treated her with therapeutic cooling to keep her body temperature low and give her brain the best chance. We just sat down beside her and prepared for the fact that we might never bring her home.”
Ben said, “When we got to cuddle her properly for the first time it was the best day ever!”
“They did an MRI scan and the neurologist said that the area of Freya’s brain that was damaged was consistent with HIE and Cerebral Palsy, and her condition was likely to limit her quality of life and be lifeshortening.”
It was at this time the family met Sian, Hope House and Tŷ Gobaith’s neonatal link nurse, who works closely with local neonatal and
midwifery units to support families whose babies are diagnosed with lifethreatening conditions before or after birth.
“Sian was one of the first people that really understood our situation and took the time to learn about us. She told us about everything that Hope House could help with such as respite care and symptom management for Freya, sibling support for Freya’s older sister Ella, and counselling too,” said Georgie.
“Then we took Freya home, but it was really difficult. If she was awake, she was screaming and vomiting to the point of choking. We were taking turns to hold her around the clock because every time we put her down, she would choke.”
Thankfully Hope House was able to quickly arrange for the family to come and stay at the hospice.
“We walked through the door and the nurses took Freya, who was still screaming. Julie, the clinical nurse specialist, came to meet us,” said Georgie.
“We were so tired that we just fell asleep and at 3am I woke up panicking about where Freya was. We were just not used to sleeping at night! I popped through to see her and she was absolutely fine and being cuddled by a nurse.
“That was the first time we really bonded with Freya and felt like parents instead of carers. It was also the first time we saw her smile.”
Ben says the family is so grateful to the Hope House team for their support in helping to manage Freya’s symptoms and in helping to turn her from the baby she was on their first visit into the happy little girl she is today.
“We’ve been really thankful that Julie has been able to coordinate Freya’s care and work with her consultants, our GP surgery, community nurses and other healthcare professionals. Because of Julie’s expertise and support we have been able to change things quite rapidly and respond to her needs and she is further along her treatment pathway because of that.
“Freya isn’t expected to live a full life and we just don’t know how long we have got with her. It does make us value every day more and want to get the best out of every moment. But there is no way we could do that without the help of Julie and the Hope House team, they really are amazing.”

Island breaks for winter sun
With summer well and truly behind us, many of us will already be missing the feeling of sun on our skin and sand between our toes. Sigh.
You don’t need to wait until summer to get your fix of sun, sea and sand. Now that the world’s starting to open up again, there are destinations across Europe that are welcoming British tourists with open arms.
From the Mediterranean paradise of Greece’s sparkling shores to the sun-drenched Canaries, here are some of the best islands to escape to this winter.
The Canary Islands, Spain
If you’re searching for guaranteed winter sun close to home, the Canary Islands should be on your radar. This cluster of islands off the coast of northern Africa are famous for their volcanic landscape and year-round sunshine. Lanzarote, Tenerife, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria are the archipelago’s most popular islands, but the tiny isles of La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro are also packed full of charm.
A favourite amongst British tourists, and for good reason, Lanzarote is so much more than a beach holiday. Although it doesn’t fall short on its selection of pristine, white and black-sand beaches, the island’s otherworldly landscape is signposted with walking and cycling trails to guide the more adventurous visitor. Head to Timanfaya National Park and feel the heat of the island’s most famous volcano, or simply relax on the beach and soak up the spectacular scenery: the choice is yours!
Just a few miles south of here lies Fuertenventura, the archipelago’s second largest island. Like Lanzarote, the island was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2009, and has some of the biggest and best beaches in the Canaries.
The Greek Islands, Greece
A cocktail of history, sun-bleached beaches and aquamarine shores, Greece’s islands are nothing short of paradise. From the gorgeous whitewashed houses of Santorini to Corfu’s historic remains, there’s a Greek Island for everyone.
Summer can be busy in Greece but you can expect a quieter vibe in the winter. Bars and restaurants will still be lively in the more popular islands but you’ll have more personal space to explore safely and at your own pace.
With over 200 islands to choose from, you’re spoilt for choice. Santorini is one of the most popular, thanks to its spectacular scenery and glamorous hotels. Then there’s Crete with its tapestry of ancient treasures, dreamy villages and splendid beaches. Crete also has some of the warmest temperatures during the winter months due to its southerly position.
The Balearic Islands, Spain
Made up of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera, Spain’s Balearic Islands are synonymous with sun, sea and sand. In the winter months you can still expect averages of around 14-16°C and plenty of sunshine.
Mallorca is by far the largest of the four, and also the most popular. With its postcard-worthy beaches washed by turquoise sea and strewn with hidden coves, it’s easy to see why! Its capital and historical heart, Palma, is worth a visit; filled with markets, pretty churches and galleries, it’s also known for its up-andcoming drinking and dining scene.
Menorca, Mallorca’s teeny neighbour, is perfect if you’re looking to escape the crowds. Its beaches are some of the loveliest in the Mediterranean and the beautiful green countryside makes it perfect for cool afternoon strolls in the sunshine.

Twelve days of CHRISTMAS HEALTH
One person in the room. It can all get a bit much with full-on socialising. Don’t be embarrassed about booking in some me time and recharging your batteries before starting up again
Five portions of vegetables a day. Christmas Day’s dinner will probably reach the target easily. But keep an eye on your intake every other day too.
1 5 9
Nine days of a cold. The average cold lasts around nine days. All the advice on how to avoid Covid applies for colds too, so keep washing those hands.
Two glasses, but if one is alcohol, the other should be water. This will both keep you hydrated and slow down your alcohol intake meaning you’ll be ready to start up again the next day.
Three French hens…or British. Eggs are pretty much the perfect food; they contain a little bit of almost every nutrient we need – loads of vitamins and minerals including calcium.
Six grams of salt. The British Heart Foundation recommends a maximum of six grams of salt per day – about one level teaspoon. Remember to count salt in prepared food.
2 6 10
Seven swans a-swimming. Not only is swimming good for your cardiovascular health and muscle toning, it does it without putting strain on your body.
3 7 11
Four calling friends. Christmas isn’t always non-stop happiness. Whether it’s you that needs to reach out, or it’s friends that would appreciate a call, this is the perfect time to do it.
Z
Ten…thousand steps a day is an ideal goal to improve your health and your mood. Over 4,000 steps is also good though, provided they aren’t all between the sofa and the fridge.
Eleven maids a-milking. Milk is very good for you – everybody knows that. Although milk alternatives don’t have the same nutrition, if you are eating a balanced diet, plantbased will be fine.
Eight hours of sleep a night. Some people claim to manage on less, but repeated studies say that eight hours is best for our physical and mental health.
4 8 12
Twelve o’clock. The start of the new year is when many of us start our health resolutions. For the best results, find some time in December to do your researchand preparation. Happy 2023!

Artist Lines and washes along the towpaths of the Shropshire and Borderland canals
My acquaintance with canals in the rural landscape was embedded at an early age with regular family outings, in all weathers, to the local canals and byways of Warwickshire. As a child, I disliked being dragged out on such expeditions; however, they must have resonated on a deeper, subliminal level as I recently found myself donning walking shoes and setting out from my home near Oswestry to seek out local towpath walks and discover interesting pieces of local history along the way. Thus, an idea began to emerge - I would record my experiences in pen and paint along the towpaths scribed by the waterways that cut through Shropshire and neighbouring Welsh borderland.
My starting point was the section of canal from Llanymynech to Lower Frankton and the junction with the Llangollen Canal. With sketchbook and camera, I therefore set out to record sights and experiences on regular walks along this length of canal. I’d also look for routes where I could leave the towpath to explore tributary footpaths and bridleways leading to other places of interest. The intention is for the project to span all four seasons, beginning last summer. I am also jotting my thoughts and impressions as I continue along my way.
During the long, hot summer I enjoy the reflections of abundant vegetation along the canal banks and deep shade of overhanging trees. In the stillness of the humid air I smell decaying vegetation, sweet blossom, and sun-drenched crops. The air is filled with the excitation of insects and birds,
the scattered silvery tufts of dandelion clocks, the fluttering of butterflies.
I catch the smell of diesel fumes from a passing narrowboat chugging along at three or four miles per hour. Once important for the transport of goods and a massive undertaking in their day, today our canals are mainly used for recreation. And the towpaths where horses plodded along pulling the unpowered barges are now dominated by walkers, cyclists, and anglers (while still the occasional horse).
From the level path I approach a gentle rise or fall where the canal needs to step up or down to maintain the level waters for navigation. I observe little hubs of activity as the lock keys are inserted and turned into the lock gate machinery.
Treading carefully over the narrow lock gates at Aston Locks, I explore the nature reserves with woodland and wildflower areas, ponds, hides and viewing platforms. The stillness of a satin-surfaced pond is broken by a swan landing, wings and large webbed feet outstretched, gliding to the water. I observe the love-heart greeting of its mate. The sudden appearance of a man dressed in shorts and floppy sunhat disturbs a heron on the fringes of the pond. With a startled screech and prehistoric silhouette, the bird exerts flight over the reeds
to a more secreted location.
I think about the ingenuity of the engineers, the inventiveness of the locks, sluices, and overflows; of the backbreaking labour of the navvies who built the canals; of the work of the canal heritage volunteers who have energetically revived and made navigable the waterways and provided wonderful habitats for all kinds of flora and fauna. I note the uniqueness of each bridge. In tunnels the darkness blinds, and I take a firm grip of the handrail for support. Best to take a torch!
Throughout the coming months I will continue my exploration of the local waterway structure. Why not follow in my footsteps to enjoy a great mix of wildlife, architecture, and countryside. Better still, create your own artworks, inspired by the natural and manmade wonders of the canal.

JAM CARE was born out of a desire to make a difference! In 2018, our founder James Nichols, decided to turn his back on corporate life and his 20+ year career in Finance, so he could do something that would make a difference. Having seen family members and close friends struggle for years to access consistently good complex care at home, James set his sights on building an organisation that would do just that.
At JAM CARE, we do things a little bit differently…so we don’t want to waste this opportunity telling you things you already know…like that our care is person centred, that it’s nurse led, that we offer the full range of complex care support services, and that we truly understand catastrophic injuries and how they impact our clients lives….these are all a given at JAM CARE, as they are for every great complex care provider. So, we want to take this great opportunity to tell you what makes JAM CARE just a little bit different.
WE INNOVATE - Every JAM colleague is coached to be an innovator. On a daily basis they “review, assess, and update” how we support each and every client.
CARE IN OUR DNA - We only recruit people who genuinely care. Training courses are essential, but if caring is not in your DNA, then JAM isn’t the company for you.
WE EMPOWER OUR COLLEAGUES - We recruit smart people and empower them to do great things! Every JAM colleague is an ambassador for JAM, and they have the mandate to make decisions and improve what we do every single day.
WE ARE AGILE - We never let bureaucracy and committees get in the way of great work and great ideas.
WE COMMUNICATE BRILLIANTLY - We are extremely active in communicating with and keeping up to date everybody associated with

WE SUPPORT CHIMNEY POTS - JAM’s support isn’t just for the client, it’s for everyone under that chimney pot: the families, friends and loved onessee above.
WE ARE AWARD WINNING - JAM CARE won the Regional Care Newcomer of the year award at the 2021 Great British Care Awards, and then came Runner up in the 2022 National Finals where CEO and Founder James Nichols was HIGHLY COMMENDED, with the judges saying, “We were so impressed with James’ innovation and passion to transform the care offered to his clients, his knowledge and passion is admirable.”
Finally, to get a true sense of JAM, it’s best to hear it from someone we support.
“JAM CARE just makes the impossible possible. They’ve ensured my daughter is cared for by a team of trusted (and consistent) carers, who have all built positive relationships with her, and know and understand her specific needs. JAM’s approach just removes the stress and trauma that people with complex needs, like my daughter, go through every day as part of normal life. Preventing pain
By Scott Gormley
Some injuries and pain are not controllable and no amount of preventative measures can stop them occurring, but that is not the case for all. Most people seek out professional help after sustaining an injury, some seek out ways to help better protect themselves from them.
What injuries can we help prevent?
Strains, sprains and joint pain all have common causes, soft tissue (muscle, ligament and tendon) inflexibility and weakness are just two. Having enough flexibility and strength in these structures to carry out your daily activities and/or sport is the key to reducing the likelihood of injuring them. If your soft tissues are inflexible and your joints are stiff, you are more likely to overstretch and cause an injury and/or pain. If your soft tissues are weak, your ability to load them safely will be lower and your joints won’t be as protected and stable.
How can you help yourself?
Let’s start with the activities we all do every day, sleeping and eating. The correct amounts of both can ensure: the body is repairing itself to its optimum capacity; you have enough energy to engage in physical activity; lower susceptibility to physical and mental illness; better concentration and balance and reduced weight gain. All of these benefits are essential in better protecting yourself from controllable injuries and pain. On average per day, 14-17 year olds should have 8-10 hours of sleep, 18-64 years olds should have 7-9 hours and anyone over the age of 65 should have 7-8 hours. With your diet, it is essential you have the correct amount of each food group for you and the activities you engage in. It is also imperative you are hydrated throughout the day, so if you can, drink your average daily water intake. For men it is around 3.7L and for women it is 2.7L.
How can you use exercise as a way of maintaining or improving your soft tissue flexibility and strength?
Engage in at least 20 minutes of exercise which raises your heart rate per day. Warm up with moving stretches and start off slow and cool down with holding stretches and gradually regress the exercise. With your stretches you should focus on the
areas you are using during the activity. You should incorporate some strength training using resistance (weights, resistance band or machines) so you can strengthen specific areas with more effectiveness. To make your exercise safer, use the correct form, allow enough time to recover between each physical activity and wear supportive (non-worn) footwear that are appropriate for the activity.
What can we as a clinic help you with?
To help you increase mobility and flexibility there are a number of treatments we offer: massage techniques; acupuncture; spinal and joint mobilisations; spinal manipulation and tailored mobility and flexibility plans. To help aid soft tissue strengthening we can highlight areas of weakness and have a higher potential for injury and give exercises specific to them and monitor your progress.
A common myth is that only stretching and mobility exercises can increase flexibility and some people have not got the potential to get more flexible and mobile to help prevent strains, sprains and joint pain. Some people are naturally more inflexible, but there is potential for improvement with the right treatment and advice. Massage can help by breaking down fibrous scar tissue and adhesions and relieves muscle tightness to improve your muscle flexibility and joint mobility. Spinal and joint mobilisations and manipulation can help by increasing movement directly in the area with pressure, which relaxes the muscles surrounding to increase flexibility. Acupuncture can also relieve muscle tightness, so your muscles have a greater tolerance to more stretch. Some of our clients have these treatments regularly to maintain a mobile and strong body as prevention is easier than rehabilitation.
